Bucs Need More Than Evans

People want to know why America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston, is always throwing to Mike Evans despite his buttery hands. Real simple: When the rest of your receivers are undrafted rookies and a special teams dude that most fans don’t even know is on the roster, that’s why.

Not to mention your second round draft pick of a tight end cannot get on the field for whatever reason, and the Bucs and Jameis are left with blocking tight ends; there aren’t many options left than to throw all day at Evans.

Granted, Evans did not catch a pass in the final game-wining drive. That’s the way it needs to be.

This afternoon, Evans was targeted 13 times, more than three times as much as any other receiver. .

In short, the Bucs are missing Vincent Jackson and Austin Seferian-Jenkins in the worst way.

When Jackson returns (Joe was told initially he would miss six weeks when he was injured at Washington), if ASJ ever sees the field again, it will go a long way to helping Jameis and the offense.

Today, the Cowboys often played nine in the box. Why not? Outside of Evans, nobody scared the Cowboys. That will likely continue unless or until Jackson and/or ASJ return.

Until proven otherwise, sorry, Joe doesn’t expect Donteea Dye or Adam Humphries or Russell Shepard to play like seasoned starters.

Agreed! We need another 1st round WR. Probably picking in the mid teens.

  2. BucTrooper Says:

I hope ASJ comes back from his ovary injury soon.

  3. White Tiger Says:

Need a blazer for sure…but I think the rookies are beginning to hit “the wall”…

  4. Jolly Bucs Fan Says:

Why we didnt go after wes welker is beyond me. Yah hes aging but at this point is a better option than anyone including mike ‘JPP fingers’ Evans

  5. Luther Says:

@Jolly, Welker does not need to be playing football. The guy is a walking concussion.

  6. Bobbybucs Says:

    @Luther

So is Conte but he’s stepping up

  7. bculaw Says:

    That was funny, Buctrooper.

Don’t forget Murphy, too. We need skill position help in a big way.

  8. Trubucfan22 Says:

Why does everyone forget the contributions that louis murphy has had for this team? Yeah he didnt get a ton of balls his way, but i guarantee you this offense would be better with him starting at wr over shepard or dye or humphries.

  9. DavidBigBucsFan Says:

    Buctrooper very funny!

  10. Bucsfanforlife Says:

you know, I don’t remember Humphreys dropping any balls thrown to him.

  11. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Humphries has some hands but doesn’t seem to get open….or Jameis isn’t looking for him.

And yes, Louis Murphy is sorely missed…..he was a very good 3rd WR for us and we could sure use him. I hope he is able to return. He seems to be able to get open quite often.

  12. LJS4th Says:

Throw it to Humpherys he catches everything Shamis throws at him!!! He has been more reliable than Evans.

  13. Mo_Downs Says:

Great Win. Let’s get 2 in a row by beating Philly.

I hope we can get Jackson, ASJ and Ali back for the next game.

Why can’t Dotson play multiple OL positions in relief if he isn’t going to start?

  14. mike10 Says:

    Agreed Joe.

And I really want to see more from Evans. I would love to get an experts opinion on how he can miss an easy pass in his hands and then turn around and use his body to block out the corner on a 17 yd hitch. Is it in his head? Is it a maturity thing? Will it come, or is that who he will be? He really needs to be more consistent tho – 7th overall pick! And our other guys (cough couch ASJ) really need to get on the field.

  15. BUC IT Says:

We need to cut Vince after the season. We need a WR who can stay on the field.

  16. J-Maguire Says:

Draft WR in 2nd-3rd next year, and a RB in 1st-2nd round of 2017. No knock on Martin, but the 2017 RB class may be the best in draft history.

  17. ChanEpic Says:

    Kenny Bell?

  18. Pawl Says:

Kenny Bell looks so small on the field, idk if he will be anything for us

  19. StPeteBucsFan Says:

It’s way too soon to talk about draft WR’s with high picks.

First things first…the rest of this season.

Evans is a player! Humphries could become the possession receiver we’ve been missing. VJAX is like Evans…great receivers capable of dropping any pass therefore scary on 3rd down. Dye could be the speed we’ve been missing out wide. Again he is from Div III we don’t know how much upside he might have.
Myers has caught the ball a ton in the past…use him more this year.

And so here is the potential receiving corps..

    Mike Evans…VJAX…ASJ…Myers…Humphries..Dye and Shepherd…not shabby.

Next year we add Murphy and possibly Kenny Bell.

This year let’s get healthy and then see what ASJ…Humphries and Dye can do.
It’ll be a struggle just to make the playoffs and even if we do it’s one and done.
So the remainder of the year we should play the rookies to see what we have and to get them some experience.

Rannel Hall should be brought from the practice sqaud during the training camp and preseason he made tough catches and big plays .I seen at a few practices catching those passes our wrs are having trouble with.
    Let’s rock #3.
