Ballsy Lovie Refreshing

Joe applauds the newly aggressive Lovie Smith.

Joe applauds the newly aggressive Lovie Smith.

Joe gets all sorts of feedback from angry Bucs fans that Lovie Smith is such a turtle some wonder whether he lives at the Clearwater Aquarium next door to Winter the Dolphin.

In fact, Lovie, twice as Bucs leader, stated how he doesn’t want to score points late in the first half and, in both instances, points scored late in the first half would have been the difference between a win and a loss.

So when Lovie decided to go for it on fourth-and-one just after the two minute warning from the Bucs-40 today, a lot of Bucs fans freaked.

Joe applauded. Loudly.

Not because the play failed and Atlanta took over with a short field. It was because Lovie knew his defense was so rotten, Joe cannot come up with words to describe it. A coach of a small high school seven-on-seven team from Pasco County would likely throw his players off the team if they played as badly as the Bucs’ pass defense today.

At one point in the game, Matty Ice completed 16 consecutive passes. Think about that for a moment. Completed 16 straight passes. Joe has no words.

But Joe has words for Lovie and those are, “Right on!” He knew that just getting one yard would win the game. And Lovie knew, realized, had an epiphany, that he had a better chance of gaining a yard than his defense had of stopping Matty Ice.

So Lovie went aggressive. It didn’t work. But Joe sure hopes Lovie doesn’t crawl back in his shell again.

Didn’t make sense to go for it there and not for the TD inside the 5. The reasoning is the same, the defense sucks and can’t stop them so trust Jameis the hope instead of Lovie the dope. Appreciate that he admitted his defense was atrocious and only Jameis can win games for this team right now.

  2. Tampabaybucfan Says:

The play worked because it sent the message to his team that he wanted to win…..not….play not to lose….like we usually do.

What is with our short yardage……..we can’t get a yard no matter what the situation……stinks…

    Miracles do happen!!

  4. Ray Rice Says:

Even if they would have lost. The 4th down play call was the right one. Period! Play to win dammit!

  5. Couch Fan Says:

I agree completely. I also think he should of went for it on 4th down in overtime over the FG to try to win the game. Trust in Jameis!!

  6. OneLove Says:

    @Lovie Is Dog Poo

No it did make sense to go for it there! You play to WIN THE GAME! Don’t worry though.. Lovie’s defense WON the game when it counted most!! HAHAHAHAHAHA!! NOW GO SUCK ON A WANG B!TCH!

    His defense still blows donkey
Love the final result but this a classic example of beating yourself for the Falcons. It took 4 turnovers to win. The defense is a case of miserable sadness.

  8. cover deuce Says:

I loved the call. Not so much the result, but the aggressive mentality is welcomed. He may have finally realized that he’s coaching for his job.

  9. Tampatony Says:

Onelovie-I’m glad he showed some balls for a change but I hated the call especially after the timeout. Too bad he wasn’t this aggressive last week. Can’t rely on turnovers every week in this league. Loser Lovie coaches like a rookie coach instead of a 11 year hc

  10. WalkdaPlank Says:

Gave props to Lovie for the try. Normally he would just kick a punt. Blowing 17+ leads back to back has me concerned though. Matt Ryan carved the D up like a hot knife through butter most of the game.

    @Lovie Is Dog Poo
HAHAHAHAHAHA!! NOW GO SUCK ON A WANG B!TCH!

I guess since you can’t find any human females to do it, you gotta ask me here. Sorry man, don’t swing that way. Didn’t you have some Falcons fans you had to do this to before? Maybe ask them?

  12. Stanglassman Says:

Sorry, going for it on 4th down was a bad choice. I get the spin but ATL would have more than likely not had the time to drive 80 + yards when they barley had the time to go 40. It should have never gone to OT. The time to be Ballsy was on 3rd and short without running the predictable run up the middle.

  13. Buccfan37 Says:

All”s well that end’s well. I’m gonna break out the rock and roll and crank it up loud to rafter rattling level so the neighbors complain. That’s my celebration of this win.

  14. RCH Says:

Time for Licht to jump in the pool!

  15. Brent Allen Says:

Joe- Lovie’s defense sucks, no doubt. But when he came here, defense was a much less issue than the offense. He’s spent 2 drafts building an offense that is now starting to work consistently. We need to give Lovie at least 1 more draft to build his defense and start focusing there. There’s not much he can do with the players he has this year, they are who they are. Let’s let him build the defense and see what we have then.

  16. OrlampaTurd Says:

Too bad Lovie’s nuts dropped a week too late… we could’ve had a winning record right now…

  17. Joehelldeloxley Says:

I agree with Stanglassman it was a stupid decision !

But a least he took it and if it had an impact in the game it’s good.

We continue our road with victory-defeat scheme, so perhaps a not so bad season.

Oh I did and they LOVED IT!! You will too in due time!! Just ask TMAXCON! I know you’re upset about us winning because your a b!tch, but I have a tip for you. Go get a ice cold popsicle from your freezer and stick it up your ASS, then I want you to WACK OFF as much as you can until the popsicle melts!! I promise you that you’ll sleep like a baby and feel RIGHT AS RAIN tomorrow morning!!

  19. Lovie Is Dog Poo Says:

Come on, they would have gone 70-80 yards for the TD. Lovie to his credit know his defense sucks and can’t be trusted to stop a team from easily going down the field, so he put his faith in Jameis instead of his defense. Atlanta punted zero times, without the two turnovers and the two gifts it would have been a loss. Lovie actually deserves credit for trusting Jameis more than his awful defense. Going with the same play they showed before the TO was the mistake.

    PREACH BRENT!! AAAAMEEEEEEN BROTHA!!!

See Joseph, you can stop pretending to be a dumb ass to appease the 80 or so idiot regulars you have posting on this blog. The smart folks are coming out and were TAKING OVER THIS B!TCH!! WOOOOOOO!!!! Yes, WE BELIEVE CLIMATE CHANGE IS REAL!!!

  21. AJ Says:

Stanglassman…you are right on. Being aggressive is great, but was not the right call there. Would have rather seen the roll out option on 3rd down. Yes our D sucks, but you cant make it any easier for the Falcons giving them the ball at midfield. Punt and pin them deep, they had no timeouts.

Love the leadership I am seeing out of Winston though. This kid is really taking control of this team.

  22. JAB83 Says:

    Hey ONELOVE….

Pick some better arguments and word to argue with so we don’t fall into the trap of stupidity that comes with people calling themselves “The Dog Poo of Lovie”. It really makes no sense to get to wordy with people who like being called the poo of a dog of a person they hate…

Seriously why would you hate on Lovie when he has delivered an offensive product like we now have after less then two years of rebuilding a team that had ZERO hope before he got here….

    Just saying
    Its as simple as that!!!!
    It Really Is…

  23. Tampatony Says:

I’m just hoping Jamie’s waves off the punt team one of these games to castrate loser Lovie and show gmc how to lead

  24. Lovie Is Dog Poo Says:

    JAB83 = OneLove, obviously.

  25. Tampatony Says:

Onelovie is basically admitting Lovie has made the d worse

  26. JAB83 Says:

Hey Tony if he is admiring the D is worst can you admit of O is better…

Can’t have your cake and eat it to as they say…. Reason being is you have to share/stay balanced with your judgement and perspective…

Lovie is a Offensive minded coach who knows D…. We all miss understood the basement project!!!!!

The man KNOWS WHAT HE IS DOING….

    Its as simple as that….
    It really is!!!!

  27. warrenfb12 Says:

    loved it. great call.

  28. Frank Pillow Says:

Don’t give me that crap about sending a message. Going for it today was a completely bone-headed move that nearly blew up in Lovie’s face. If this team needs that kind of act to motivate it to make a single play on D, then we really have problems. Which we do at CB, S, DE, etc.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m one of those who thinks Lovie coaches scared, but punting there was 100% the right decision. Long field limited time. Make them earn it. Instead they got gimme field position and sent the game into OT. Last week was different. Going for it then/there would’ve been the right move. Ice the game with a TD or make them go 99 yards.

  29. Tampatony Says:

@jab- the offense has improved, in spurts. Today they regressed but that could be cus of the injuries. Adding koetter and Winston automatically improved that side of the ball. Lovie’s passive influence has definitely hurt this team.

Lovie is a passive defensive coach, who is making the d look worse than how Frazier had it playing last year

  30. Fameiswins Says:

I’ll admit, I’ve been critical of lovie. Especially after last week. That felt like the last straw, but I admire how the team came out and fought today. They really wanted it. I also love the way Jameis has been handled and what he has done for this team. They weren’t kidding when they did their homework and picked him. I’m a full believer in Jameis. The man is a winner (at 21). I will be patient with lovie after this year until he can get some D draft picks. I see what he’s trying to do and think it will work. He just needs the players to execute it. I love what is happening with the offense. The most important thing is, his team came to work for him today!

  31. Couch Fan Says:

Thats a loser mentality there Frank. All you need is 1 yard and the game is over. Dont put the game on the shoulders of a awful defense when the chances of you converting 1 yard is very high. Lovie made the right decision, it just didnt work out. You are crazy if you think the Falcons wouldnt of been able to score with 2 minutes left on this D. Did you not see a much less talented offense drive down the field on us in the same situation last week? Trust Jameis. Not the Defense.

  32. Getaclue Says:

Not only do I like that we went for it but I think that being said we didn’t convert and we still won… Showing lovie you can go for the kill and still win if you don’t get it makes me hopeful he will loosen up some more

  33. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

Stupid place to make that stance, Dungy even just said it on NBC: PUNT…..like what koetter is doing with offense and jameis is impressive but the defense sux and thats lovies baby

  34. ChuckInJax Says:

I took it as his resignation from the team and retirement announcement from coaching football…If you have NO faith in your defense, then play to make the opponent go 80 yards in 2 minutes, not 40. Seriously stupid call made by a coach for whom the profession has past him by.

  35. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

It was the right call. The Falcons moved the ball at will all day. We were lucky to get some turnovers because we hadn’t answers to stop them. They would have scored most likely either way so we needed to try and ice the game by getting the first down.

  36. LargoBuc Says:

Good game by everyone, Lovie too. This team came out ready to fight, so if its Lovies fault when they come out lethargic, then he gets the credit for this team coming out looking for a fight.
The Bucs showed alot of guts. Standing up against a far superior Falcons team where we got punked last year. What a win. I have no clue how any of you can try spin this negative! Stop trying to be the smartest one in the room and be a fan for once!

  37. tmaxcon Says:

so basically Lovie get’s blown out and embarrassed then comes back and wins a game after being embarrassed. His defense still did it’s best to lose the game and now he is Vince Lombardi. The key to this league is consistency. That is why I can’t stand Lovie Smith for of this team. He has never been consistent nor has he ever produced a consistent contender.

Do you lovie sheep see the pattern… Blowout / embarrassment then a ugly win. Win is a win and it was a nice game but stop with the teams turned the corner and playoff BS… All Lovie has proven is he can get embarrassed try and rally the troops the next week. Until this team strings a couple of good wins together without getting embarrassed it’s just a good win. Lovie has NEVER won consistently in the league so what makes you sheep magically think he is going to get it year 12… He’s not. The best you can hope for with Lovie is a a few 8-8, 9-7 and a 10-6 every few years and ONE and DONE in the playoffs. A coach with a lifetime 3-3 playoff record in his 12th year is hardly consistent. If you are a fan that is satisfied with ONE and DONE and mediocre 8-8 and 9-7 seasons Lovie is your guy. If you want to challenge for a ring and consistently win in the playoffs lovies history proves he is NOT your guy.

    ONELOVE you need a life.
