“Lack Of Focus”

October 28th, 2015
Focus.

Focus.

It’s one thing for a secondary to get lit up by Aaron Rodgers or Tom Brady or Peyton Manning. Hey, it happens. There is a reason those three will have busts in Canton.

When you get beat, and beat badly, by one of the greatest to ever play, you doff your cap and move on.

Just guessing, it’s a safe bet that nobody in the group of Marucs Mariota, Ryan Mallett (who is so dense he cannot work an alarm clock), Blake Bortles and Kirk Freaking Cousins, will wear a gold jacket 40 years from now.

But the way the secondary of the Bucs has performed against that lot, you wouldn’t know they were: a rookie playing his first NFL game, an immobile dummy, a second-year quarterback having a career day with a bum throwing shoulder, and a backup who was on the cusp of being benched.

But Mike Jenkins believes he has the answer: Focus, so he told Andrew Astleford of BSPN.

“I would say a lack of focus,” Jenkins said Monday. “We’ve got to hold ourselves to higher standards, look in the mirror and just get it right. It’s just a lack of focus.”

Joe doesn’t dispute what Jenkins said. How can one? But here is the thing:

Why all of a sudden, six games into the 2015 season, must the cornerbacks now focus? This wasn’t important enough earlier?

If true, this suggests the guys in the defensive backfield didn’t take the aforementioned four quarterbacks seriously. If so, that is just a rank lack of discipline.

Focus is one thing, not being able to correct the most glaring of issues that Pop warner players and coaches can diagnose and fix, secondary holes big enough to drive a bus through, is downright bush league. You need focus to drop back into coverage and not get faked out by play action 70% of the plays? OK then buddy. pfffttt!

  2. David Says:

Cut his ass now! How can you not be focused in the NFL? All of the QB’s are there for a reason. It does not matter who you play there still a professional. You have to be ready.

  3. CC Says:

    Same excuses…next .

  4. tsbucsfan Says:

I don’t even know what to say anymore. If you need more proof that Lovie has failed miserably with this defense, the only reason he was hired in the first place, then you are blinded by your fandom. We have the makings of a dynamic, explosive offense. Lets not allow Lovie to destroy that with his overly conservative nature. It’s time to move on from Lovie.

  5. OneLove Says:

I for one am getting tired of this scrub!(Mike Jenkins) How the hell is this guy even starting for this team!!?? That is a testament to the lack of talent we have in this secondary!!

Since many of you are so IMPATIENT, Lovie Smith needs to pull a Dick(OH MY!) Vermeil and just hold open tryouts for our CB positions!! I’m sure he’ll find someone off the street that can cover 1v1 without faceguarding and NOT drop INT’s like Jonathan Banks!!

“If Lovie don’t no how to coach so be it… Hard to believe he would get a job offer and you wouldn’t…. Wonder why??? Your idiots that’s why…” – JAB83

“So my advice would be, yes, it’s okay to throw things at your TV when your team has a monumental collapse like the Bucs did on Sunday in Washington. But take a deep breath and understand that it is only going to get worse if you continue to jump from one coach to the next.” – Peter King

Lol he knows the answer to this, but of course with Lovie’s nuts in his mouth he can get it out.

  8. CC Says:

These players are just spewing what Charlovietan is selling.

  9. Tampa Tony Says:

Onelovie- this is your boys doing. He has final roster say

  10. JAB83 Says:

Just in case anyone has forgotten… Rome was built in a day because everyone demanded it to be or else!!! Oh and they loved Cesar regardless… Building a dynasty is easy… Just ask the handful of teams that have done it… So if it don’t happen overnight, I say we burn it down and start over… We can do this every day till the people we cry to build us what we want when we want it and most importantly….THE WAY WE WANT IT….. Other wise burn em all at the stake…. And when we get our turn we will chose to do??????? Well we will do nothing because the resources are all gone…

  11. Pick6 Says:

this unit, coached by lovie’s son, a first time position coach, are the most embarrassing part of an embarrassing defense. a bunch of veterans, including high draft picks, who can’t stop some of the feeblest passers in the 2015 NFL

  12. DallasBuc Says:

There is not a single rotten team in the entire league that would prefer to have incompetent Lovie Smith instead of the HC they currently have.
The worst HC in football on the worst team in football. It is not even debatable.

  13. Hawaiian Buc Says:

    @DallasBuc,

I don’t necessarily disagree, but it is debatable. It’s really really bad in San Francisco. Most of the their fans would trade their coach for you or me. Jacksonville fans would trade their coach too.

  14. DallasBuc Says:

Hawaiian- I respect that but we disagree so I suppose it is debatable after all but barely. I seriously doubt fans or ownership of either SF or Jax would look at what incompetent Lovie Smith has done here and wish to have it be done to their favorite team.
    2-14
    4-18
    It’s shameful

  15. Ernest T Bass Says:

Banks was solid under Schiano. He had to cover Megatron one year and held his own. David was Superior under Schiano and now looks lost. David has never looked so bad until Lovie.

50 DB’s have come through One Buc the last two years, someone made them all look bad!

  16. ATrain Says:

JAB where were you when Schiano was dealing with MRSA and Pill Head QB… He had the year for He$$ with BS and everyone called for his head.. HE won more games in one year than Lovie in two..

But we have to keep Lovie.

Oh AND Rome was not built in a day but would you keep a builder had to continually fix problems with his building as it was being built. Then made excuses as to why it didn’t work the first time. Even if this was the third builder.

NO you would FIRE HIS A$# and tell excuses as like….

Lovie is not fixing the problem..

The Offense is making progress. The O-Line, the run, the QB..

The defense which Lovie took over is worse.

  17. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Our CBs are getting beat……they are simply not good enough…..that coupled with a terrible void at MLB (coverage)…..

We need to concentrate on CB, DE, S in that order with the draft……perhaps for 2 years running….

Our offense is starting to look like it can perform at a high level…..it is perhaps because we concentrated on that through the draft.

Sure, coaching is the main problem….but we have to face the fact that many of our players simply haven’t proven to be good enough.

  18. BFFL Says:

I’m definitely not defending Lovie, but it’s damn hard to coach up the group they have on defense. I want players that don’t need to be coached. I want players that act like professionals and learn their craft and know how to look at film and make adjustments. Bottom line is the Bucs just don’t have hard nosed football smart players on defense.

  19. passthebuc Says:

What was that record, FRANKIE FORD “You Talk Too Much”
The whole team just talks. They use words like commitment, focus, responsibility, etc, etc.

Just go out and play. Do what you are paid to do. No one is buying into the constant BS.

  20. OneLove Says:

    @BFFL

Be careful with that kind of talk on this site! Most of the people here believe that our defense has 11 PRO BOWLERS who are victims of bad coaching!!

  21. bucrightoff Says:

BFFL the thing with what you’re saying is the notion that the defense hasn’t been addressed at all. Well, here’s the list of players still here from when Lovie arrived….

    LVD
    GMC
    Johnthan Banks
    Spence
    Gholston
    Lansanah
    McDougald

That’s 7 guys left out of a defense that has 26 guys on the current roster. 75% of this defense is Lovie chosen guys. These are mostly his guys. He chose them, he didn’t inherit 19 of our guys. People are acting like he’s had to deal with the same 26 guys Schiano left, clearly not even close to the case.

  22. Buccfan37 Says:

passthebuc… I’m old enough to remember that song “you talk too much, you worry me to death.”

  23. OneLove Says:

    @bucrightoff

    LVD – starter
    GMC – starter
    Johnthan Banks – starter
Spence – Wouldnt start on another team, but backs up McDonald
Gholston – worked his way up to starting, but you saw what he did yesterday with all those dumb penalties. Probably wouldn’t start for any other team in the NFL
Lansanah – starter, prolly wouldn’t start for any other team in the NFL
McDougald – starter, also gave up the game winning TD last weekend.

So let’s do some simple math…. That’s 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 out of 11 Guys actively playing on this defense!!(6 of them starters!) So what were you saying about most of the defensive players being his guys again?

  24. bucrightoff Says:

Lol math not your strong suit OneLove? I mean makes sense, you can usually only count the two nuts of Lovie hanging off your chin. Shall we go over it again?

Current defensive players on roster: 26
Players acquired after Lovie Smith arrived: 19
Players inherited still on the roster: 7

If choosing 73% of the current defensive unit players doesn’t count as this being a defense made up of mostly Lovie’s guys, that’s kind odd coming from you. After all, you give Lovie all the credit for the current offense. Uh-oh, here comes some numbers…

Current offensive players on roster: 24
Players acquired after Lovie Smith arrived: 17
Players inherited still on the roster: 7

And with that, go back to putting Lovie’s nuts in your face and let the adults do the discussions around here yeah? I enjoy your posts from a humour standpoint, but wow are they spectacularly stupid.

  25. OneLove Says:

    @bucrightoff

Math not my strong suit? I can’t figure out a way how to dumb this down anymore than I already have. Let’s count again… 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 of the guys that you mention are NOT LOVIE’s GUYS are starting! That’s 6 out of 11, which means more than half of the guys starting are NOT LOVIE’s guys.. Lovie brought in people via free agency for depth and I assume to eventually take starting roles, but that hasn’t been the case. Which brings my back to the POINT I keep bringing up with you(which you seem to ignore) YOU DO NOT REBUILD THROUGH FREE AGENCY!!!!!!

    Now let’s count again… That’s 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9…. inches of my WANG back in your MOUTH! Quite impressive!!!!

  26. bucrightoff Says:

Lol OneLove you act like the Glazers put a gun to Lovie’s head and said you must start these guys. He’s turned over 75% of this entire roster from Schiano. He’s a free man, he can do as he pleases. And he pleases to put Mike Jenkins and the rest of those losers in that secondary out there. He chose to cut Revis. He chose to sign a bunch of FA disasters. You give him a pass for anything not successful, but demand we give him all the credit for anything good. Why you have such an affinity for a coach who has missed the playoffs in 88% of his last 8 seasons as coach is, frankly, sad. Really sad. Desperate even.

Anyways you’re quite a good troll as I’ve responded far more than I should have to someone who is clearly has too much Lovie baby batter in his brain. I wonder what your next name will be here when Lovie does get fired, we all know you’ll never come and get yours when he does.

  27. OneLove Says:

    @bucrightoff

Oh stop it… You Love me and there’s nothing you can do about it!!

Now Be honest…. Did it have anything with me getting all the way up to 9!?!?!

  28. bucrightoff Says:

I am impressed. If Lovie gets 3 years we might even be able to count to 9 wins in his regime too!

  29. Another J Says:

Mike Jenkins hasn’t been focused since he left USF!

  30. Pick6 Says:

the most glaring issue is not that the defense is bad. it is that our head coach calls plays and manages the game as if it isn’t. when your defense can’t stop anybody, you go for 7 not 3 on 4th and goal from inside the 2. if your defense can’t stop anybody, you try to get some points before the half. if your offense is the better unit, try to get a first down with a late lead instead of 3 meek rushes and punting. if your offense is jumping all over an opponent in the first half, for god’s sake don’t call of the dogs – press your advantage!

dirk koetter has said it about a dozen times and practiced what he preached: the job of a coach is to leverage your player’s strengths and hide their weaknesses. smith has shown no awareness of our strengths and weaknesses

  31. godzilla13 Says:

    OLB LVD (2nd round) HOUDINI
    DT GMC (1st round) GREAT
ILB Kwon Alexander (4th round) ROOKIE
CB Johnthan Banks (2nd round) AVERAGE
CB Mike Jenkins (1st round) WASHED UP
DT Clinton McDonald (7th round) GOOD
DE William Gholston (4th round) GOOD
    OLB Danny Lansanah (UDFA) HOUDINI
SS Bradley McDougald (UDFA) BELOW AVERAGE
FS Chris Conte (3rd round) GOOD
DE Jacquies Smth (UDFA) VERY GOOD

Most of the defense is just either good, washed up, below average or houdini (MIA). It takes above average to elite players to win in this league consistently. Until er start drafting defensive players or spend money in FA for above average players not much is going to change. Mike Jankins says that it is a lack of focus? Players not knowing the coverage scheme for a hgh paid professional is unacceptable. How can there be so much confusion on assignments each and every game iin the secondary? If they need to place each player in a room to study film with each other 18 hours a day until they get it right, so be it. It all comes down to preparation. It is obvious there is a disconnect in that category.
