“It Is A Sign Of Respect”

October 21st, 2015
Marked man.

Marked man.

It is a question that has many Bucs fans wrestling at night, losing sleep (and has nothing to do with the weird craft beers they experimented with hours earlier).

What has happened to Mike Evans?

The gifted second-year receiver is off to a shaky start, and one could argue Evans hasn’t had a decent game since the lone Josh McClown-led win over the rotten Redskins last November.

Part of his slow start could be attributed to a nasty hamstring injury he suffered in preseason, and he was inactive in the season opener and was limited in the second week of the season at New Orleans.

Today, “America’s Quarterback,” Bucs signal-caller Jameis Winston, said chemistry is not an issue as the two have worked out privately throughout the summer. Rather, Jameis said, defenses are keyed to stopping Evans.

“Oh, it is good,” Jameis said of his bonding with Evans. “We definetly have a chemistry. Some things work and some things don’t. It is football.

“[Evans] had a big year last year so people are focusing on stopping Mike Evans. That’s a big thing.

“It is a sign of respect because he is such a good receiver.”

So Jameis has no qualms whatsoever that Evans will break through sooner or later. Jameis even admitted it is a goal of his to see to it Evans gets more catches.

True number ones are able to get open even with the added coverage and with the rest of the offensive weapons lacking. This guy has vjax and a decent running game. No excuse for him to not be able to at least have a cpl 100 yard and td games. No excuse. Sorry. I like the guy but…

Add ASJ to our mix and watch Mike do much better…..

I thought it was JW best PC to date.

Dez Bryant, Julio Jones and other #1 receivers have defenses game planing for them yet they still produce. I’m sick of the excuses from loser Lovie and his soft players.

Lovie sucks it’s as simple as that

  5. Bucamania Says:

If he was so marked, then why did John Norman blanket 83 all game long? Everyone needs to stop making excuses for the guy. He’s not playing any where near the level he was last year. That’s obvious.

  6. Brion Says:

Elephant in the room: there is no speed at any receiver position.

  7. DallasBuc Says:

Mike Clayton Evans until he proves otherwise.

I absolutely understand the growing concern. We are after all the franchise that witnessed a star WR get the dropsies and disappear from the league. We have that scar to bear and so it’s totally understandable why Evans drops and his drop in production concern everybody.

Hopefully he’s simply having a sophomore slump, aggravated by the perfect storm of the challenging hammy and NFL defenses who are now well aware of ME and he’ll begin breaking out this weekend. He doesn’t have to turn it around overnight and regain last year’s form to become a very formidable weapon for us. Match him with VJAX and a healthy and improving ASJ with Sims and Martin out of the backfield…the improving offensive line..the growing rookie QB…this team has cause for optimism…if ME doesn’t work out there are still plenty of other options offensively. Although I must concede if both ASJ and ME continue in the current doldrums it will effect our draft next year. Add an aging VJAX to the mix of diminished ASJ and ME and our receiving corps suddenly goes from impressive to pathetic pretty quickly.

I think defenses game planning for him has made the game more difilcult for him. He’s only in his second year but he needs to adjust his game and bring it to a higher level. Certain things that worked last year might not work against double teams this year. He’ll figure it out and return to form though.

people forget with all these breakout rookie campaigns that it still takes kids time to grow into the NFL game. Year 3 used to be the magic season for WRs, now if they aren’t all pro by opening day of year 2, they are busts. Evans will struggle this year but he is a 22 year old competitor with tons of drive and lots of things he can get better at. the Calvin Johnson and Randy Moss comparisons were always idiotic, but the guy certainly has it in him to be another Vincent Jackson and that is a great start.

Jameis is being told to “take what defense gives you”. The fans are clamoring about it and criticizing jameis when he takes risks. If Evans is being doubled then Jameis isn’t going to him. That is exactly what the fans say should happen. But then Evans isn’t producing and they claim that all #1 wr ge coverage and still produce. Sure, julio jones has matt ryan. Dez bryant has tony romo. Demarius thomas has peyton manning. Antonio bryant has ben roethlisberger. You see the trend here. Those “great” wr also have great qbs throwing to them. Jameis is a rookie. I believe he will be great one day. But im realistic in saying he isn’t there yet. He is being told to limit his risks. So when he sees ME getting extra coverage, he isn’t going to go to him. Its that simple.
