“10 Penalties, That’s Ridiculous”

New Bucs right tackle Gosder Cherilus had a rough day

Back in preseason, offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter spoke following the beating by the Browns and said, “We stunk.”

Today, he sang a similar tune at One Buc Palace.

No surprise there.

One focus of Koetter’s head shaking was penalties.

He was dialed in to offensive penalties against the Titans. The Bucs had 10.

“Ten penalties, that’s ridiculous,” Koetter said.

Koetter went on to say he wouldn’t “throw anyone under the bus” other than himself, but there was no excuse for such a messy showing, one that killed quality runs from Doug Martin.

For those keeping track, right tackle Gosder Cherilus was the prime offender, with four penalties, three accepted by the Titans defense.

4 freaking penalties from one dude? Under any other circumstances that would be grounds for being cut, but ya know what? He’s our best option

Honestly, if you think this team is capable of winning a single game this year then you’re an awful lot more optimistic than I am

  2. StPeteBucsFan Says:

I honestly forget how many of Goz’s penalties were holding or offsides. One is a penalty of effort the other a penalty of stupidity.

Koetter should throw himself under the bus. I counted at least three “formation” penalities where the Bucs simply failed to cover a tackle. That’s stupid players who are poorly coached.

Again those who watched the 2nd half of the UF-ECU game will remember the highlight of McIlwane just getting in Kelvin Taylor’s grill…for a LONG time after the brain dead throat slitting penalty gave ECU great field position and put them right back into the game. UF has the same problem as the Bucs. No freaking discipline. I suspect McIlwane will change that. Lovie…bwaahahaaa and as Tom E correctly pointed out…Koetter also has a horrible game.

  3. Buc1987 Says:

Cream…I started thinking 0-16 on Sunday night. I haven’t changed my mind yet.

  4. CreamsicleBananaHammock Says:

    87-

I was just thinking to myself….gun to my head, forced to put every cent I own on 0-16 or 1-15 (or better) which would I go with

    After that performance I wouldn’t hesitate — 0-16

That doesn’t mean they can’t turn it around, but is there ANY evidence at all that they will? No passion. No aggression. Unprepared.

This team looks more interested in Netflix & Chill than playing football

  5. Tom Edrington Says:

How bad are the Bucs? The Barron of Optimism — SPBF — is getting down on them….

I know it pains him but the truth hurts and this team was painful to watch on Sunday….

Yes, my ECU guys gave the Gators a real tussle and we’ve lost a lot of talent…just shows what real effort can accomplish…

The Bucs are undertalented but also suffer from poor coaching which is the ultimate killer.

  6. Dirk Disco Says:

I predicted 4-12 and I thought we would lose the Titans game but I didn’t think the Defense would be MIA. Now I just don’t know where those 4 wins will come from.

  7. Crazylocha Says:

SPBF, I will go with the Bucs radio analysts on those uncovered penalties. Maybe one was justified, maybe. The others he said he looked at the replay in booth, and said receiver was up, not sure why it was called. I will defer to those that had eyes on the “all 22” to say otherwise. Rookie line judge and first time referee DEFINITELY had some impact, not 10 plus worth. Timing of the calls had bigger impact. From limited views of plays, the holding calls weren’t evenly distributed, will reserve more than questions there until I watch the game replay soon.

  8. ShutTheBucUp Says:

At least Koetter talks like someone who is unhappy and willing to accept how ridiculous the effort in that game was. He strikes me as more of a head coach than Lovie Dovie. I wouldn’t be too heartbroken if Lovie gets the axe and Koetter is interim HC. Seems like the kind of guy who can get guys going.

  9. BrianBucs Says:

I wonder if we should start a pool for how many games Lovie lasts?

  10. Hawaiian Buc Says:

Guys, we are going to win some games. I don’t know if that’s the best thing, but it will happen. We probably won’t win many, but we’ll win just enough to force the Glazers into a difficult decision on Lovie. Mark my words. We will be competitive some weeks, then other weeks we’ll look like how we did Sunday. It’s going to be a long, interesting season.

  11. BrianBucs Says:

So why do you think that Cherilus was so available this time of the year?

  12. CreamsicleBananaHammock Says:

Hawaiian, ever looking like we did on Sunday again is unacceptable. And that’s the third time it’s happened in the last 17 games (ATL & BAL)

Any alpha male would say “never again” after that ATL loss. I dont want to hear about guys putting it behind them and moving on. I want this team to dwell on what happened on Sunday and refuse to let it happen again

Sadly, that’s not what I’m hearing from our HC

  13. BrianBucs Says:

    Hawaiian

Agreed. Bucs will win a game or two they should lose, and lose some they should win. Just enough for the Glazers to string along a Lovie decision

  14. Another J Says:

    I wonder what Warhop thinks…

  15. StPeteBucsFan Says:

Just enough for the Glazers to string along a Lovie decision

If one of the upsets is in the next three games I tend to agree. If the Bucs come home 0-3 get embarrassed by Carolina and drop an another bum performance against the Jags..I think the fans will literally force the Glazers to make the move during the bye week.

Thanks Tom E. for crowning me the Baron of Optimism..but I believe I’ve surrendered that title to Lakeland Buc and even Bonzai who are still hanging in there.

I’m almost beginning to believe the Bucs have a better chance on the road against a mediocre N.O. team or the Texans. I think the home field drought and the mood of the fans has the Bucs choking at home. Uni’s are starting to get really tight around the collar in the RayJay.

  16. bucrightoff Says:

It’s the NFL, going 0-16 is very difficult. I mean we could have done it last year if not for the miracle in Pittsburgh and playing the dumpster fire Skins, who might have beat us had they not started IRGIII. You fall into wins by accident in this league sometimes. That said anything under 4-12 is in play, Jacksonville and Washington are the only games I see being over 40% chance of winning.

  17. Sean Says:

What is even more inspiring is the fact that if the Bucs go 0-8 at home again (0-16 over two seasons), the Glaziers may still raise ticket prices to pay for the new video boards that are being installed this upcoming off season. Think about that when you are sweating your butt of in Ray Jay in a few weeks watching them lose to the Jaguars.

  18. Buccfan37 Says:

Drop kick me Jesus over Lovie’s goalposts of readiness. The Bucs, laying on top of the NFL’s junkyard scrap heap.

  19. Hawaiian Buc Says:

    @Creamsicle,

Couldn’t agree more. But I don’t own the team.

  20. mjc Says:

This is the player Lovie said had a good game on his talk show.

  21. cmurda Says:

    @Creamsicle,

I agree with you and Hawaiian. Unfortunately, Hawaiian is right. We likely will win a few games (by accident) but having a debacle like we did on Sunday will quickly kill any excitement that we had. The Glazers put more effort into creating new jerseys (disgusting looking jerseys by the way) than they did into putting out a product we could be proud of. First of all, we had some of the nicest looking uniforms until that stupidity and secondly, this team needs much more than the Glazers have given. It’s too bad Malcolm is not leading the Front Office. The kids are clueless and this franchise is turning into the worst in the NFL, maybe all of sports. If there was ever a team that needs to bring it this Sunday, it’s the Bucs. In the famous words of all of us “we’ll see”.

  22. FLBoyInDallas Says:

Koetter is the optimist, because he said “stunk” as if their condition were past tense. He should’ve said “stink” and “will continue to stink until Lovie Smith is replaced”.
