Dirk Koetter talks about the quest to crack Jameis Winston

Before training camp, offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter told Alex Marvez of FOXSports.com that Jameis Winston, America’s Quarterback, was being blasted with a massive playbook and already had in his head enough plays to fill 10 regular-season game plans.

The goal, in part, was to find the limits of Jameis’ mental capacity.

Koetter hasn’t found it.

“All the stories about Jameis being a football junkie, those are true,” Koetter told SiriuxXM NFL Radio on Thursday.

The Bucs are still working to crack Jameis, Koetter said, and they won’t take the easy way out by simplifying things in August. “We’re trying hard to overload him and test how much he can handle.. … “We’re hitting it hard right now.”

Koetter told Steve Duemig last week that things will be dialed back for Jameis soon in order to dial in to a traditional game plan, which Jameis might almost find simple compared to all the stuff in his head right now.

……..you can have all that knowledge in your head

…but that doesn’t mean you can execute it in NFL cause of the speed and complexity of the game

Interesting approach by Koetter. One major reason why comparing rookie QBs in their first preseason is silly. One coach (like Koetter) might throw the kitchen sink at his rookie QB, while another might baby-feed the playbook to his rookie QB and build up much more gradually. Encouraging to me that Koetter says he hasn’t max’d out Jameis’ mental capacity yet, even with this super-aggressive approach in preseason.

That’s b.s. the games not to fast or complex for him he has the brain and arm to kick ass!! He just needs an O-line!! Now Freeman he had no brain but had the arm that’s when you’re in trouble!

  4. kaput Says:

Koetter is one of the most respected guys at his craft.

And Winston is a smart cat.

It might work out just fine.

I rewatched the Vikings game, or at least the offensive plays that Winston was involved with. I was more impressed than I was when I watched it live. He made a few mistakes, but the talent is undeniable. I think he’s going to be a really good, smart quarterback than a team can win big with.

  5. OB Says:

Captain Dirk already knows if Winston can execute what he knows in a timely manner.

When I ran air traffic control systems, I had a trainee report from ATC school and at that time he was the only one that had ever aced the written test, but he couldn’t keep two wheelbarrows apart because he couldn’t apply what he knew in time.

Winston may have missed some passes at he start but the last two minutes of the half was a full blown pro that was going to score. I am sure that Captain Dirk is working on getting 60 minutes of performance out of him and the rest of the offense.

I am bummed we have to wait until Monday night to see how he and the rest of the crew is coming along. With Lovie calling the defense, it should be interesting.

  6. Harry Says:

I was excited when the Bucs hired Mr Koetter, but I was excited when they hired Lovie, too, lol. Lovie, in fairness, needs a huge upgrade at DE for his defense to work properly. The jury is still out on both. Let’s see what they do this season with Winston. Jameis is someone we should all be very excited about. He has all the tools AND the work ethic. Jameis will be amazing.

  7. The Other Side of the Coin Says:

I’m really liking the hurry up offense. It plays into Winston’s strengths as shown in the two minute scoring drive. As Winston gains experience, he’s going to be a nightmare for apposing defenses.

Has anyone asked DK how JW compares to Matt Ryan in his rookie season? Seem to recall Matty Ice having a good start in the NFL. was wondering how they matched up according to the same O.C.

  9. Destinjohnny Says:

More worried about his accuracy issues. The guy is like Rudy Stein.

    Completely OT but:
Leonard Williams had five tackles, 1 1/2 sacks and a safety for the Jets.
I don’t think he played a whole game.

    Excellent question, GBF!
Maybe one of the Joe’s can ask it.

I’m an optimist by nature. I believe in being as positive as possible. That doesn’t mean being in denial. I knew by the time I was a junior in high school no matter how much I practiced, how much I loved the game, I was NEVER going to play Division I basketball much less the NBA. Gotta admit one’s limitations. I get that.

But there is NO reason to assume that Fameis can’t be successful this year!!! Yes he’s a rookie. But he is exceptional and he has an OC who brings an excellent reputation in terms of preparing QB’s plus he has Bajakian.

So I accept that Fameis is a rookie, that he’ll be a lot better this time next year…see Teddy Bridgewater’s first two games THIS year…I accept that he’s going to make mistakes…sometimes try too hard to keep a play alive instead of just letting it go and tossing stupid ints…but he’s also going to toss passes like that long first down to VJAX against Minnesota. He’s tossed enough excellent passes in practice that people clearly see his ability.

Let’s stop with all the freaking excuses and jump on the Bucs bandwagon!
10-6 baby! Taste the playoffs this year then get ready for a serious run in 2016.

Next year’s draft will feature DE..DE..DE..DE…LOL. Obviously that will be one of our top priorities but what excites me is that we should begin adding to our depth in this next off season. We’re already starting to see some of this at LB.

I really am pulling for Winston to be a star QB in the league and for him to have a long career as the Bucs QB. In hearing how smart he is and how much he understands the game and the details, I bet he would also make a great offensive coordinator when his playing days are over.

  14. Pickgrin Says:

It’s going to be fun watching Winston develop into the star NFL QB I believe he will one day be.

Priority ONE is getting a good OLine set up in front of him. Licht needs to really concentrate on continuing to improve the talent level up front until it is top tier.

With enough time to operate in the pocket – Winston is a special QB. He showed that in spades his (redshirt) freshman year. When he has the 3+ seconds to scan the field, make a decision, step into the throw and deliver the ball cleanly – Jameis will eat your defense alive over the course of a game.

Considering the weapons he has to work with here in Tampa Bay – there’s no reason that Winston can’t have a very good rookie year – IF the OLine can do their job. Looks like a big IF at this point but I am hopeful that Koetter and Mankins and now the new vet Cherilus can help whip this line into shape and get it playing at an acceptable NFL level.

Exactly, and Lovie’s D is predicated on getting QB pressure primarily with the 4 down linemen. Without a top flight DE, Lovie’s D is not going to run on all cylinders.

  16. BuccaneEric75 Says:

Matt Ryan was drafted in 2008. Dirk Koetter didn’t get to Atlanta until 2012.

  17. J-Divinity Says:

This is definitely the wrong strategy IF TRUE. As a 10 year-old my parents tried to teach me calculus because I was already far, far ahead of my peers in mathematics and they believed I could handle it. In hindsight, it did more harm than good. There really was no GOOD reason for them to do that.

Winston has MUCH to work on right now. It is looking more and more like Mariota might’ve been the better pick, which has really p***ed me off because I’ve been the biggest Winston advocate the last couple years. Winston needs to practice THE SAME PLAYS over and over again until his timing and rhythm is PERFECT, not continually add more new things.

These coaches must think they have 3-4 years to build a winner–they are WRONG. If they don’t improve on last year’s record greatly, they will be shown the door PARTICULARLY if Mariota lights it up and wins games for the Titans.

  18. DavidBigBucFan Says:

Hey J Divinity if you notice he said they throw it in practice but scale it back when game prep. They are putting the legend of Fameis` football iq to the test and he’s showing he can handle it. Plus there’s no way to compare a 10 year kids ability to absord advanced math to that of a 21 year old man’s ability to absorb football concepts .
