No Need To Panic On O-Line (Yet)

August 15th, 2015

panicIt’s one preseason game. Calm down!

But having typed that, Joe understands Bucs fans’ angst. The offensive line is only slightly better (maybe) than last year, partially because of two rookies on the front line.

Just like “America’s Quarterback,” Bucs signal-caller Jameis Winston, rookies are not supposed to be All Pros on their first exhibition game. Only the lunatic fringe believes otherwise.

Granted, we won’t know fully the extent of right tackle Demar Dotson’s left knee injury until later Sunday after he has an MRI. Crossing fingers it isn’t serious. If it is, you can bet Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht will be busy working the phones.

(Hey, the Redskins’ tight ends are dropping right and left. The Bucs have a surplus of tight ends. Just a thought, folks.)

The NFL regular season is four weeks away. Plenty of time to find some help on the offensive line. Remember, the Bucs have the first pick on waiver wire claims through the third game of the regular season.

Joe understands why you may be freaking out right now. No need to run for a paper bag.

Yet.

It may be a blessing in disguise….we may be forced to bring somebody in.

  2. Rrsrq Says:

The run blocking did look decent early, last year you just knew it was bad this early in preseason

  3. rayjay1122 Says:

Did not have time to get a bag as I vomited in my mouth. You play like you practice and this team is going to be the sequel to last season’s team. I am really sick of the ineptitude displayed year after year by this team. I realize that this is just one preseason game but does anyone really see more than a 4 win season this year? Not me.

  4. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Our special teams coverage wasn’t good…..no pressure on QB….again. Didn’t like the playcalling early….should have gone to shorter passes.
Herron caught some passes. Kwon Alexander is a player…..

  5. Bigbucs1 Says:

Yes run blocking looked decent- why did we start the game with confidence passes? Why was Dotson playing late into the second qtr? Where was the pressure from dline

  6. rayjay1122 Says:

Also, not impressed with the whole message board thing. I registered last month and still can’t post and never received the so called authentication email. I miss the old open thread format.

  7. Buc1987 Says:

3 years away from a Super Bowl.

  8. Scott Says:

RayJay check your spam folder. Mine was in there and I missed out on the jersey drawing

  9. Dave Says:

    It is pre season
Nothing means a thing except injuries.

  10. Señor Mofo Says:

Yes, because Demar Dotson is the key to everything. Without him, we could never get to that championship we were otherwise destined for this year.

  11. rayjay1122 Says:

Dave is correct. Still, losing gets old and so does getting completely outmatched and out couched week after week.

  12. rayjay1122 Says:

    Coatched… Auto correct. Lol

  13. rayjay1122 Says:

Coached…damn.I give up. Turning to the whiskey now. 😉

  14. Lakeland Buc Says:

The O-Line wasn’t that bad, you can’t always use them as the scapegoat. The defense played like cream puffs, we didn’t get anything from our special teams. The special team gave up big plays, a 25 yard punt, a miss FG.

  15. bucsnutt Says:

Rayjay, I just found my confirmation email in my spam mail tonight. request another because the first one expired. I was in the same boat for the first two weeks, very disappointed. And help messages sent to the ‘Contact us’ link were never answered.

  16. Eric Hernandez Says:

It’s a pre-season game. I know once it starts it doesn’t matter we just wanna see wins. Now that the game is over you take a step back and see what’s what. Doug Martin looked petty good the o-line held up for the first two drives. D. Smith made a rookie mistake as did Winston. I did see things from Winston that I had not seen from a Bucs QB. Way to stand in the pocket and deliver a strike to VJAX, ASJ has to catch that ball. Your huge get that ball. Gilkey should NEVER BE ALLOWED TO TOUCH ANY FOOTBALL’S AT ALL. Remember Bucs fan its something to grow on and at least Kwan Alexander didn’t break Jamies Winston’s jaw in the locker room.

  17. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

Looked like the bucs walked off the plane and played they looked lethargic and unprepared… where as zimmer had the vikes fired up and clicking on all facets… long year ahead and that sucks

  18. Owlykat Says:

With GILKEY out of there the OL can at least run block this year due to Marpet and Smith and Edwards looks better in this game than last year and we were resting Mankins while studying our other OL prospects. I thought Pamphile played OK too. We need to keep our third string Center who needs to move up to second string and he is better than Adams. We had some decent second string tackles too and Fragle was OK. We need to work out our best starting OL and let them work out some chemistry before the season starts. Koetter needs to take over making OL decisions. On Defense neither of our starting DEs got a sack. English and a third string DE along with Melton looked better than the starters. Loved the number of turnovers by the Buc’s. The special teams were awful in this game. Clay is a bust. We were better with Soloman last year and we need to bring him back. Bell was the best at returning but we need him as a WR and should not risk injury to him returning kicks!

  19. feelthepewterpower Says:

Bucs fans didnt like the playcalling? it’s a preseason game..you dont to show our regular season playcalls lol

  20. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

feel the pewter the nfl has tape on bucs or koetters offense he can show whats up the bucs arent going to surprise anyone

  21. feelthepewterpower Says:

dusty…..Im sure he can always design new plays…and his plays im sure have different wrinkles you can do with the formation and play call itself. you can say that about anyteam, but good OC’s always make adjustments and find new ways to attack opposing defenses.

People dont realize…but Minnesota has a solid defense…and our line was under pressure most of the game. it was also their second game (if you watched the hall of fame game)….they’re not a bad team, very underrated. if it were regular season, id worry…but it’s a glorified scrimmage.

  22. DallasBuc Says:

Shocking. Just how ineffectual the Tampa oline is, before the Dot loss.
Unreasonable. Then there is the depth. OhhhNoooo.
If only our HC was incompetent I would have someone to blame for repeatedly failing at his job.

  23. DallasBuc Says:

    Coach em up Warhop!

  24. Lakeland Buc Says:

Who will panic over a preseason game?. We will win the NFC South this season, I have no doubt

  25. RJBucnut Says:

The OLine played avg at best but I will take that considering the blocking that took place last season. I hv a serious problem w our 2nd RB Sims. Yes this kid is quick in open field but he has no vision. He had at least two runs last night where the cut back was there but he decides to stay w the pack and gains little to no yards. Those are golden opportunities to gain big chunks of yards and are going by the waste side with him. Give him that virtual tool to work on his vision cuz he has none.

  26. BucTrooper Says:

I seem to remember Joe telling us to be calm LAST year when the Bucs stunk it up in preseason. “Calm down” he said. Sorry. I’m not buying it. If you practice bad you play bad.

  27. LJ'sDaddy Says:

Yes ray Jay I miss the old open thread format too. Is much more fun easier to read liked it much better message boards are not cool. Change it back Joe!

  28. LargoBuc Says:

Im glad Jameis got a reality check. Hopefully, he works even harder this week. As for the defense, I was impressed by Banks and Verner. That tackle on the first possesion to hold them to a field goal was great. But still, no pass rush and Minnesota has a below average line. Our secondary has to be perfect with no pass rush, which is unrealistic.
Our running game looked okay. But if Jameis struggles all year, it wont matter. Teams will take our running game away until Jameis forces them to adjust. Overall he looked sloppy more often than not. I hope he works on it extra hard now that he knows whats going on. Luckily, Tennessee is almost like a fifth pre season game. And dont forget, Minnesota played last week, so they had a chance to shake off that first game rust.

  29. Wausa Says:

The d looked bad the oline looked bad and special teams were atrocious
