“Let Him Get His Ass Wupped”

Bucs rookie left tackle Donovan Smith

Bucs rookie left tackle Donovan Smith

A former Buccaneer issued a passionate plea to Lovie Smith and Bucs offensive coaches yesterday.

The call was for playing time — for rookie left tackle Donovan Smith.

A veteran of 121 NFL starts at guard for the Bucs and Eagles, Ian Beckles sounded his trumpet during Ron and Ian on WDAE-AM 620 yesterday.

Yes, Beckles saw Smith, the No. 34 overall pick, get beaten badly on his first snap and struggle through his opening series against the Vikings. But Smith later steadied himself in the preseason opener.

Beckles said the only way to accelerate the learning curve for the rookie linemen is to let them get snaps, snaps and more snaps.

“Let him get his ass wupped,” Beckles bellowed. His point was that a good player will learn from the mistakes but needs to make them first in live action.

Joe can’t argue. Heck, Joe was screaming months ago that Smith and rookie, second-round-pick guard Ali Marpet should get the vast majority of first-team reps in practice, which hasn’t been the case since they arrived.

Perhaps Joe should relax. Lovie and offensive line coach George Warhop have experience and a plan.

If that is true then Lovie’s defense should have learned a lot last year!!! Not only did they “get that a$$ wupped” But some teams rolled them up like a soccer ball and kicked their a$$ down the street!!!!

  2. Tampa Tony Says:

Lovie has experience just not good experience at putting together solid offensive lines…

  3. Buc1987 Says:

Smith is on the right team if he needs to get his ass whipped regularly..

  4. LargoBuc Says:

Beckles is right. Smith just needs to go out there and get his ass whopped. Either he hardens up or gets intimidated. But at least we know what we have. The guy has size. He has wing span. He is surprisingly quick for his frame. Plays light on his feet. Everything you look for in a tckle. Now all he needs is more snaps. That way he wont be too surprised come week one.

  5. simpleasthat Says:

Keeping george warhop is going to make all the difference in the world.

  6. Waterboy Says:

I think that Lovie need to start bringing in another team to work against for a week or so during training camp. I think it would be beneficial for the players to work against guys with different skillets than the guys that they practice against normally in camp. It also gets the guys used to working against different schemes.

  7. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

Obama has/had a plan too. How is that working out?

  8. BrianBucs Says:

Biggest thing about Smith getting his ass wupped is that means that Winston and Glennon are getting theirs beaten off

  9. firethecannons Says:

Winston rook needs experience on field also. He was getting better progressively as that first half went on.

  10. TrippyKmac Says:

I really think George Warhop is the problem, it seems every team this guy has been on their offensive line play really goes down the drain. In San Fran they declined each season he was there and the same in Cleveland. He’s got some talent and needs to find a way to bring it all together, lets hope he can, history shows otherwise.

  11. Pickgrin Says:

I think that Donovan Smith will soon be handing out his fair share of ass wuppins. Dude is a LARGE man with excellent athleticism for his size. And he is said to be very smart. He’ll get there. Both our 2nd round OLine draft picks will be good players once they get some experience and NFL reps at real speed under their belts.

  12. BFFL Says:

you cant teach fast. Smith is slow and he will always be slow.

  13. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Smith is one huge “beastly” creature….I’m sure he will be the one to do some “a$$-whoppin'” soon!!!

  14. Pickgrin Says:

    BFFL Says:
“Smith is slow and he will always be slow”

Incorrect BFFL – Smith ran the 40 in 4.98 and 5.03 seconds at his pro day. A sub 5 second 40 for a guy that size could never be considered “slow”. In fact he would be considered fast. We’re talking 340 lbs and he runs as fast as both your quarterbacks. He is “athletic” in other ways as well. Good pick up in the 2nd round – he has all the tools and just needs experience and reps to become a solid NFL tackle.

  15. gulfcoast Says:

lol at Warhol having a plan!

  17. Jimmy53 Says:

This is dangerous and short sighted. If Smith is getting his ass whooped, then it means more open shots on Jameis (as we saw the other night). That can’t happen.

    Beckles should know better.

My 14 year old and I watched that abomination of a preseason game by the first teamers. Typically, you would expect it to be me that is calming my son down saying “it’s only a preseason game”. Normally, that would be true but not with this team. Instead it was him saying that to me. I tried that approach the last 2 years and we sucked hind tit both years in the reg season after sucking in the preseason. For this team, the preseason is very important especially for the O Line. However, thanks in large part to how terrible the O Line was, here is what was written on Rotoworld. This should bring tears to Bucs fans’ eyes.

Per Rotoworld (take notice of the confidence that our O Line will stink by them saying the Bucs WILL have one of the worst O Lines. My excitement for this season is only fueled by Winston as my expectations are extremely low.

Buccaneers signed RT Gosder Cherilus to a two-year, $7 million contract.
Released by the offensive line-challenged Colts in late July, Cherilus was passed over by the similarly tackle-needy Bills and Lions in ensuing free agent tryouts. The 31-year-old graded out as one of the worst offensive tackles in football last season, per PFF’s charts. Cherilus does address a need in Tampa Bay, where the team recently lost RT Demar Dotson to a six-week MCL injury. The Bucs are going to (again) field one of the NFL’s worst O-Lines.

  19. drdneast Says:

And Beckles knows this because he was an All Pro howmany times?
We used to call him Ian Buckles when he played at the Sombrero.
I also like his lisiders knowledge about players acquired from such reputable sources as burger shack waitresses.

  20. Buccfan37 Says:

Smith will be fine. That player would be hard pressed to pull that spin move off on him again. I guess it was too quick for Smith to grab on and hold.

  21. drdneast Says:

Lets see Scotty, unemployment eay down, interest rates low, inflation low, health care availble for all Americans, gotten us out of two stupid useless wars, had Bin Laden snuffed, gas prices low, stock market at an all tiime high.
Do you need more you Limbaugh lemming.

  22. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

Unemployment rates are skewed due to people dropping out of the workforce all together… speaking of unemployment it is probably where warhop and lovie and licht belong… most glaring weakness on this team is OL… draft a couple hopefully will be good… but then you have a shot to grab La’el Collins for nothing and you donr pull trigger… thatdoesnt show any plan or statement to your consumers that your product is something that is going to be good

  23. drdneast Says:

The Bucs did make a play for Collins, Dusty.
I know when you quit your paper route ‘in 1963 you gave it up all together so you are speaking personally.

  24. Fsuking Says:

The problem is some people just continue to get there ass whupped

  25. ElioT Says:

Smith will be fine, he’s got talent and is not a p*ssy; you can tell by the way he carries himself.

Anthony Collins on the other hand, there was a GIANT P*SSY!

    Go Sucs!

  26. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

The bucs didnt make a play for Collins or they would have drafted him… what did they have to lose? Great they will be 3-13 and warhop gone i guess is the christmas present i can look forward too in 4 months, that and the trumpinator moving from the penthouse to govt housing

  27. drdneast Says:

Your racist slip is showing, Dusty. Not that it’s a big surprise.

  28. bringbucsback Says:

“Lovie and offensive line coach George Warhop have experience and a plan.” C’mon Joe, did you even type that with a straight face?

Dusthty is correct. Don’t draft Collins, then compete with 31 other teams for his services; not very logical. It was shameful that L&L didn’t “waste” a 7th round pick on Collins and pay the 1st round talent 1st round money; completely irresponsible!…Some plan!

  29. Buccfan37 Says:

drdneast… I disagree on the accomplishments you attribute to Obama and I will bury my response here at the bottom. 1. unemployment way down… really, it’s closer to 20% in reality. 2. interest rates low… how does that help savers? 3. inflation low… that’s a gut buster, I can’t stop laughing. 4. health care available for all Americans… the majority can’t afford it. 5. gotten us out of two stupid useless wars… there are still American troops fighting in Afghanistan (guarding the poppies) and troops in Ukraine provoking WW3 with Russia. 6. had Bin Laden snuffed… lol, you actually fell for that clearly obvious lie, you are not as smart as I thought you were. 7. gas prices low… compared to the extreme gouging recently? 8. stock market at an all time high… yeah on the verge of a collapse. Obama is no different than the liars who preceded him and those that will follow him.

  30. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

dr d because i support warhop getting fired and trump that makes me racist? imteresting assumptions you have keep up the good work doc

  31. Stanglassman Says:

The people that get their ‘News’ from Limbaugh, Breitbart and Alex Jones and the like have no idea how crazy they sound to the real world.

  32. Drywaller Buc Says:

    Bin.laden.died of kidney failure didn’t he? 🙂
    Go Bucs!
