Bucs Sign DT Tony McDaniel

August 10th, 2015
Bucs signed free agent DT Tony McDaniel today, formerly with the Seahawks.

Bucs signed free agent DT Tony McDaniel, formerly with the Seahawks.

Well, maybe Da’Quan Bowers hasn’t worked out in his second life with the Bucs after all?

Given the unexpected ding to what was the deepest position on the team — back surgery for defensive tackle Akeem Spence — the Bucs went out and got their second Seahawks defensive tackle in as many years this evening, signing Tony McDaniel to a pact.

Per the creator, curator and overall guru of Pro Football Talk, the great Mike Florio, McDaniel can make up to $2.5 million, which was the amount of his base salary in Seattle.

McDaniel, 30, was a starter for the Seahawks and was considered a salary cap casualty after he was cut last week. He had two sacks in 29 starts with Seattle over the past two seasons.

Does Joe like this signing? McDaniel couldn’t be worse than Bowers, could he? And Joe loves, loves, loves the fact McDaniel has a ring to show off, just like fellow former Seahawks defensive tackle Clinton McDonald.

Wow I like it! I wonder if Clinton McDonald recommend him??

  2. Pvine Says:

This should be of some help for the defense. And yes, the experience of having that Super Bowl ring is a big positive.

  3. snook Says:

Odd he didn’t end up in Atlanta with Quinn.

  4. dakid5 Says:

Great pick up.. he is no slouch the seahawks simply couldnt afford to keep him around after making all those re-signings this past off season and last year. Gotta pay to keep a team with that talent around hopefull the bucs can reap the rewards of the seahawks cap situation

  5. DallasBuc Says:

2 sacks in 29 starts. Bowers is not worse than that, sorry…

  6. Buc Fan #7423 Says:

    YES!!!!!!!

  7. Tampa Tony Says:

From what I read he’s more of a run stuffer than pass rusher. Hope he teaches McCoy how to finish games

  8. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    WHAAAAAAAAAT!!!! YESS! J

    Joe,

You know I’ve been asking for us to sign McDaniel’s. Since he was FA out of Miami a couple years back. Lol, I even asked for us to trade McDaniel a couple times.

Now we finally have a certified run stopper in the rotation.

    GO BUCS!!!!!!

    Now Sign Aldon Smith

  13. DallasBuc Says:

Also keep in mind that McDaniel had the benefit of playing on a functional, championship level defense, not a 2-14 2014 incompetent Lovie Smith defense. I will reserve further judgement until I see whether or not this guy is asked to compete with Bowers or if the Incompetent one will just hand him the job to justify the signing like he consistently did last offseason.

    Bolster our Defensive Line Rotation

    • Justin Tuck 6-5 268 (FA *Giants have cap issues)

    [From the Defensive Tackle]
    • Kendall Langford 6-6 313(Reportedly will be cut)

    [From The Right Side]

    • DT Gerald McCoy-Kendall Langford-William Gholston
    • NT Tony McDaniels-Akeem Spence
    • RDE Julius Peppers-Daquan bowers

Note: Seattle NT Tony McDaniel was one of the league leaders in short yardage/goal line stop rate percentage. Would be a great addition to our rotation.

  15. Owlykat Says:

Tony McDaniel has a Super Bowl Ring but was not a starter with Seattle. He also comes with plenty of baggage including a Domestic Violence arrest and another prior for aggravated assault. He pled to misdemeanors on both charges. Has been suspended by the NFL before, and was injured when he was with the Dolphins. He is not a sacker and is 30. He was tough against the run when he was with Jacksonville early in his career. I would have preferred we used the money on an experienced reserve OL and hopefully with some experience at Center. Not excited by this pick. With effort even Bowers should be able to beat him for a roster spot. He originally played for Tennessee in college.

  16. Howard Cosell Says:

This guy is probably better than Bowers but not as good as Spence.
    Good depth move.

I’m afraid I might have to start to admit that this off-season
looks epic so far. We’ll see. In August everyone is a Superbowl contender.

  17. Owlykat Says:

Oh and on the Agg Assault the victim had to have a plate put in his face!

  18. The Buc Realist Says:

Will it take him over a year to learn Lovie’s passive defensive system???

  19. DallasBuc Says:

    HowardCosell- epic?…hyperbole much?

  20. Joe Says:

Now we finally have a certified run stopper in the rotation.

You mean McDonald/GMC can’t stop the run? You are filled with all sorts of surprises today.

  21. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    OK one Mo gen

    LUVMYBUCS Says:
    August 2nd, 2015

Dude is a great Locker room guy, a leader. He’s been one of the best run stopping (Top 5) Tackles in the league- over the last 4yrs.

    Plus
-He grew up as a BUCS fan,
-His sister was a cheerleader last year.
-His Best Friend (Clint) currently plays for the us

    Let see what happens.

    Also

Per: DE Michael Bennnett (On Tony McDaniels)

Bennett and other Seahawks say there’s no ill feelings toward the players who do land new contracts, but cautioned that the loss of players like defensive tackle Tony McDaniels as the team contorts itself under the cap can catch up with them

“That’s what people don’t understand, people talk about Tony McDaniels like ‘Oh, he’s just another guy,’ but think about, how does a Bobby Wagner make those tackles?” Bennett said, via Yahoo Sports. “These are the workers. It’s like the clothing line. You see the people who own the clothing line, but you don’t see the people who work and make the clothes. The middle man is always needed for success in this league.”

  22. ChanEpic Says:

Buc Realist – The SeaHawks play a version of the the Tampa two already if I am not mistaken. Why the long face? This is a solid, not spectacular, roster move and certainly not smacking of the desperation of the last regime’s dumpster diving. Buc up little camper!

  23. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    Joe

Hahaha, Joe I mean no disrespect toward u. U much know I’ve got Much LUV

Just getting fired up for this season. But c’mon pass rush is great one thing, but adding a Pat Williams type run stopper, to this rotation is essential.

  24. Fsuking Says:

Does this mean we can play Melton at DE a little now? That could be nice. Melton can spell McCoy. McDaniel can spell McDonald. That would give Melton time and energy to work both end positions in relief of Johnson and Smith. Then bring players like David and Swearinger of the edge in certain situations and our sack problem is solved. That would make for a nasty pass rush and take a lot of pressure off our secondary.

  25. gotbbucs Says:

Solid signing. Great two down DT that allows us to keep someone else fresh for nickel situations.

  26. Trubucfan22 Says:

Did luvmybucs admit to wanting us to sign EDS and dump zuttah and penn? Wow. Just wow.

Ill be honest tho too, i thought EDS would deliver more than he has.

In happy we continue to add depth at DT, but Man do we need DEs. I guess it just goes to show how hard it is find good pass rushers.

  27. Back up kicker Says:

I personally like DT who assault charges on their record. Mean M-F’s

  28. Joe Says:

Just getting fired up for this season.

    Understandable.

  29. mike Says:

I love it! D line should be solid and the depth and stregth at dt should help the D ends. Now, I’d sign Mathis too… you know, a postion of need! Ali will be great but not right away.

  30. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    TRU

Alex Mack was my 1st option, but yes also listed EDS. He’s exactly what I thought he was. A mid level center, just like Zuttah.

Zuttah’s now play with beastly guards.

  31. FuNkYxMuNkEy Says:

You can never have too many solid DTs on your D Line. I like it

  40. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

Kev this guy makes his money run stopping. We come here everyday and all folks do is gripe about sacks(glorified tackles for lost),there other aspects of the game that are just as if not more important than a sack. Sacking a QB and not forcing a fumble at the same time what really have you done.

  41. scotty Says:

Their is more to playing DT than just sacks this guy will be great in rotation welcome to the Bucs brother!

  42. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

McDonald’s best friend and word is he always wanted to be a Bucc. Championship pedigree I’ll take that for cheap any day. And I see you Amigos. Hello there👋.

  43. Bob Digital Says:

Great signing, especially with Spence going down. Very strong 3 man rotation at DT

  44. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

Only 3 complete seasons in 9 years. Same injury prone trend.

But at least 2 of them were over the last 2 years.

  45. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

And, btw…he couldn’t have been too good if the Seahawks cut him over $2.5 mil.

  46. mac Says:

    @ bonzai

Maybe so… But he is still better than Bowers…

  47. DavidbigBucsFan Says:

Some true moronies up here keep calling Lovie incompetent & his defense passive. You call it passive but it’s based upon the defense Dungy & Kiffin installed. Just like Kiffins Lovies defense needs the front four to get to the qb and the dbs to cover to enough to give them chance. Kiffin did not blitz that much and that used to tick me off. Too many times they didn’t they get any pressure. So do I hear you calling that great defense passive? If GMC & McDonald had ends on either side worthwhile AND the receivers weren’t open as soon as they left the line things would have been different. You guys act like you know so much but it’s obvious you don’t. If you were so smart you’d be coaching this team You need to pick up a dictionary and learn what the word incompetent means. Lovie came up the the old fashion way aka the hard way and it took Dungy to give him a chance. One thing Tony Dungy did know, defensive coaches and players. So I ask you under educated and overly biased translucent pink skinned individuals, Mike Tomlin is pretty much cut from the same cloth…….would you call HIM incompetent?

  48. LakelandBuc Says:

What Tony McDaniel brings to the Bucs is a big body in the middle to free up Bruce Carter, his role will be to attack the Center and Left Guard. We need for Bruce Carter to be able to roam and make plays all over the field, especially in the passing game. We don’t need 50 tackles and 10 sacks from him, just do for us what you did for Bobby Wagner in Seattle. I’m excited to have a big body (6’7 300 lbs) in the middle, this defense is slowly coming together. I think Jason Licht will be our best Football mind since Rich McKay.

  49. Dan Says:

LUV MY BUCS You have way to much free time on your hands. Perhaps a girlfriend or a real friend may help

  50. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

David the Animosity Amigos are on they’re last legs. The proof of Lovie Smith’s defense will be in the pudding. But I’m sure the Amgoites will still fine reasons to covertly find issue with this head coach. It’s comical on they’re part but a Animosity is as Animosity does as they. Hi haters👋😃.

  51. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

Now that’s what you call dropping some knowledge Lakeland.

  52. WyomingBucsFan Says:

Bucs don’t make this move if they think this will be a rebuilding year. Get ready Bucs fans this is going to be a good football team! 11-5 and playoffs!

  53. DallasBuc Says:

Davidlittle- a 2-14 record = incompetent. Mike Tomlin won a Super Bowl, brought his team to another and regularly leads his team’s to the playoffs. Therefore, Tomlin is by definition a competent and accomplished HC that doesn’t find a way to lose 14 out of 16 games in a single season. Lovie Smith makes Trash McCown, Anthony Collins and Michael Johnson unchallenged starters…incompetent. So you can call me names and cry racism when the name calling doesn’t work but at the end of the day your arguments do not stand up to the sober reality of incompetent Lovie Smith’s record as Bucs HC.
    2-14, incompetent.

  54. Abdominal Snowman Says:

Looks like Bowers might have just scarfed down his last cheese burger on the Glazer’s dime. I was hoping we would sign him we he was released. Trust me the Seahawks wanted him but they are so wrapped up in trying to keep key players together they wrapped up $100 million on 10 players.

That leaves them with $50 Million for the remaining 43!

Their loss will be our gain. He started 29 of 32 games for one of if not the best defense in the league over that span. To say he cannot help us or the fact he doesn’t get sacks as a negative is asinine. Kudos to Licht for gathering more talent and depth to this team. Arrow just continues to point up for this franchise.

  55. Abdominal Snowman Says:

Didn’t incompetent Lovie beat Tomlin last year? I’m not sure can you refresh my memory?

  56. DB55 Says:

Luv – you a trip bro. Penn? EDS? Whoa!

Yet another nice move by Jason licht. Not looking too much like a lapdog this year. Bravo!

I thought sterling Moore called Lovies def passive in this mornings article.

“Some coverages aren’t the same. Some coverages, you know, are a little more aggressive in Dallas versus here, and vice versa,” Moore said.

    WELCOME ABORD MR MCDANIEL

  57. ptwalk Says:

DB55 you missed the “vice versa” part, huh.

  58. DooshLaRue Says:

I like the fact that we are building a McDecent defensive line. It’s about time we got Mc Serious about this Mc Sh!t.

    Go McBucs!

  59. vegabuc Says:

Buc realist I’m sick and tired of your negative comments dude. Go troll somewhere else

  60. ElioT Says:

    I like the move.

Can’t hurt to have more veteran depth, especially a guy how knows what it’s like to WIN in the NFL. A lot of the guys on this team haven’t won much at the NFL level.

There’s no DEs out there so you might as well stock up at DT.

    Go Sucs!!

  61. Islandbucfan Says:

Wow. Calling the coach incompetent after 1 year….brilliant thinking dude. Let me guess, we should have fired every coach after Gruden every year right.

Consistently wins championships. If we go 2-14 again, then talk incompetent. Right now he’s trying to put a team together. Go bucs!!!

FYI when a new coach comes in, he has to deal with the trash left by the old coach. He’s trying to building a franchise. Let the man work.

  62. MarineBucsFan Says:

    WyomingBucsFan,

I agree. Lovie must really think he has a playoff team.

  63. Bigtime bucs fan Says:

So excited to hear about this signing , think it will be a great addition. My big fatty buddy Brian always talks about this player

  64. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

    @Mac
You got me on that one. I’m just disturbed at the trend toward injury prone players.

EVERY ONE of JASON LICHT’s new free agent, non-rookie signings this year have injury histories. In this case, Tony McDaniel has missed a lot of games out of every season of his 9 year career, except for 3 seasons…two of which are in the last 2 seasons.

While having two full recent seasons is a plus, let’s not forget he is coming into a humid, injury causing environment. He’ll have to adjust to the heat. Muscles will suffer for it.

Another plus is the fact that he isn’t slated to be a starter…but how long will that last when the guy ahead of him is also injury prone?

    LakelandBuc Says
“I think Jason Licht will be our best Football mind since Rich McKay.”

Oh please. First off, Rich McKay wasn’t THAT great. He made a lot of bad signings and he didn’t build the team the way you think he did. That nucleus came before he was GM.

What Rich was good at is pushing back the salary cap to later and later years until it became such a problem that it would take years to straighten out…and then he bailed just before the bottom fell out.

I liked him before that, but I quickly realized he was an illusionist.

  65. mac Says:

    @ Bonzai

I agree… A few of our free agent signings have had some injury issues… However, most players that are free agents are usually “free” for a reason…

Its hard to find a diamond in the rough if you don’t dig through the coal…
