“Train Wreck” = Charles Sims And Jameis

Harsh words from a former MVP

The Buccaneers’ hierarchy might have grand visions of Jameis Winston wreaking havoc handing off the rock and throwing to versatile second-year running back Charles Sims, but a former NFL MVP says that combination spells disaster.

Rich Gannon was adamant that a rookie quarterback with a young running back is a certain mess, a “train wreck,” to be specific. Speaking on SiriuxXM NFL Radio yesterday, the former MVP QB said no running back should be along side a rookie quarterback without “thoroughly understanding the protection schemes.”

It’s a great way to get your rookie QB “killed,” he said.

Gannon explained that a QB with experience can work with a rookie or very inexperienced running back. When the huddle breaks, that seasoned QB can bark protection keys and reminders to the back, subsequently avoiding disaster. No rookie QB, Gannon said, can pull that off consistently because he has too much swirling in his head.

Of course, this got Joe thinking about Sims and Jameis. Sims has just eight games of part-time work on his resumé. That’s got to be in the mind of Dirk Koetter, as he ponders a 21-year-old QB in a new offense and behind a questionable offensive line.

Gannon, a big fan of Jon Gruden, his former head coach, also said sometimes coaches take their rightful fear of young players too far. He told tales of how Chucky would bury young offensive players with the Raiders if they made just one mistake in practice. Gannon said Chucky’s zero-tolerance policy with young players hurt their development.

“You gotta give kids a chance,” Gannon said.

I’m of the belief that Winston to Sims will be gaining some yards and breaking off some long pickups.

  2. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Not too worried about Jameis or Sims….if our Oline can protect.

  3. Buc-A-New Says:

    Gannon, next Bucs’ QB coach???

  4. BuccaneEric75 Says:

Hopefully they pick up the new offense quickly. I expect some head scratching plays at first, though.

  5. Curtis Gatorboy Says:

Gannon speaks the truth. No need to worry tho. Glennon will be the starter.

  6. Nick Says:

    Play. The. Talent.

Only the truly delusional think we are winning the Super Bowl this year. Take our lumps this year. Figure out the offensive core. No excuses next year.

  7. buc4life1979 Says:

Imagine that…Mr. “Luv dat guy” was so stubborn that he hurt his players’ development…anyone remember Charles Lee??

  8. ruggyup Says:

Uh oh! Where there’s smoke there’s fire. Listen up lads. Be forewarned, nobody tells Lovie Smith how to run a hpersuccessfull football team.

  9. Buc1987 Says:

Curtis…your hatred fro Jameis has made you delusional.

  10. unbelievable Says:

It’s not like we don’t have other RBs with more experience on this team…

  11. Charlie7 Says:

Just by the name, I’m guessing Curtis Gatorboy might be a Gators fan and the Gators wouldn’t know what a good QB is!!!!

  12. Jackson Says:

Yeah Joe, Jameis is bound to be a bust. And it’s your fault + other local media outlets for endorsing him and setting our franchise back for the next decade. You’re part of the problem, not the solution. Should’ve drafted Marcus Mariota..

  13. Martinii Says:

Is Rich Gannon in charge of overtrivializezed football trivia. This sounds like data that has been hermetically sealed in a mayonnaise jar laying deep beneath the Great Salt lake for at least 200 years. “breaking news,” Sims gets Winson killed during handoff. Give me a break……

  14. mike Says:

i never really understood the sims pick. I remember kiper saying if you want a great o lineman, the bucs will go gabe jackson here. Probably not having a 4th rd pick that year made us reach.

  15. Buc1987 Says:

LOL Joe that’s hilarious this Jackson dude thinks it’s your fault the Bucs drafted Jameis.

The Bucs have some of the dumbest fans in the NFL.

  16. buc89 Says:

    @ Jackson

Mariota is a rookie too. The article is regarding rookies. How would Mariota do better? Did you even read the article?

  17. rayjay1122 Says:

Is there some astrological event today that I am unaware of that is causing mass stupidity? I mean, literally there were many more idiotic behaviors being displayed by fellow motorists today than normal and then I read Jackson’s comment.

  18. JMan Says:

You don’t need to factor in Sims to get a train wreck. The guy behind center will weigh as much as a train soon

When was the last time you watched a NFL football game? 1983? Franchise set back for a decade? You sir are hilarious and the funny thing about it is you are so unaware just how hilarious you are. You can’t make this stuff up. Only on JBF……Only on JBF

  20. BuccaneEric75 Says:

Come on Bucs fans! Unite and get on board!!!! Bring on those Titans!!!!

  21. Dick2111 Says:

Rich Gannon made several good points.

On many plays, the RB will be the last line of defense for protecting the QB. In a perfect world, nobody gets through. In the Bucs world, jail breaks happen … often. Whoever the RB is on any given series of plays better be able to adjust their protection quickly to keep from getting Jameis killed.

Gannon’s point about young players needing to be allowed to make mistakes (and then learning from them) is also a good one.

  22. what? Says:

What if you put the rookie QB with the inexperienced RB alongside a rookie LT most project as too slow to play LT in the pros, and toss in a RG who played LT in D3 last year?

    That’s the magic formula, right?

  23. Abucfanfromelpasotexas Says:

    Can’t wait

  24. Curtis Gatorboy Says:

I have people in the know who work at One buc place. Glennon is out performing Thug Jameis, Glennon will be the starter. While Jameis is getting thrown out of clubs, Glennon is at home studying the playbook!

  25. b Says:

Cutis… you are making your gators look even worse than usual with your constant hate. Go out and get laid or something dude. even if winston was a thug which he is not, you are much worse with the hateful garbarge you constantly sprew in every thread.

  26. The Other Peyton Says:

Soooo much butt hurt gator on this board! Who wins more games, the Bucs or gators? That’s the only real question.

  27. Tiny Tim Says:

Curtis is a racist thug that wears white sheets over his face.
