“A Man Among Peers”

June 2nd, 2015
SalPal is charmed.

SalPal is charmed.

Joe has noticed virtually the entire Buccaneers team has embraced “America’s Quarterback,” Jameis Winston.

That’s easy to do when remembering that Bucs players lobbied general manager, AC/DC-loving Jason Licht to draft him during last year’s 2-14 season.

But the way Jameis has fit into the Bucs’ locker room and displayed rare leadership, without stepping on the toes of Gerald McCoy or Vincent Jackson, has warmed him to his new teammates.

It doesn’t hurt that Lovie Smith just raves about Jameis whenever he gets the chance.

Part of what makes Jameis “America’s Quarterback” is his charisma. And it is real, says SalPal, uber NFL insider Sal Paolantonio of BSPN. Last week SalPal hung out with at an NFL rookie symposium and SalPal came away charmed.

SalPal went on BSPN Radio yesterday to detail how fellow rookies are drawn to Jameis.

“I was impressed by Jameis Winston,” SalPal said. “Players just gravitate towards him. He has a natural leadership and charisma that people have talked about and people have written about. But when you see it up close and you watch him interact naturally like a fly on the wall as I was able to do for three days, you really come away impressed that this guy is a man among his peers.”

The only guy on the Bucs who (to Joe’s knowledge) hasn’t welcomed Jameis is center Evan Smith. Let Joe just say this about Smith: if he doesn’t pull his head out of his hindquarters and play decent ball this fall, then he better pray on his knees that the rookie he sneers at goes to bat for him to save his job. Because if Smith plays anything like he did last year, it would take Divine intervention from Jameis himself to save Smith’s arse.

As far as Jameis and his charisma and personality, Joe has written this before, it reminds Joe of Magic Johnson, who constantly exudes a positive energy. Jameis is the same way.

    @JOE

Magic Johnson? Come on man! Dam! On the other hand I am a believer and know he is going to turn the franchise around. EDS will start kissing Jameis’ a$$ after Jameis starts making the OL look good and getting W’s.

EDS needs to be shown the door.

but I’d be a little nervous with JW angry pirate’s hands under my backside.

maybe he rubbed EDS the wrong way.

  4. Tom Edrington Says:

So basically, after hearing Joe(s) litany of everything Jameis, can we assume everyone on the team will quit if he is not the starter come September?

  5. robert 9 Says:

everyone is drawn to jameis. if he’s on the bench I’m sure the starters will be drawn there as well. maybe shoulder rubs and foot massages for the anointed one?

  7. The Other Side of the Coin Says:

Much of Winston’s leadership comes from his innate ability and willingness to see the best in his teammates. And he actively lets them know it. How can you not respond positively to someone who treats you like you are valuable and sets an example by his own hard work and contributions?

There are many a hater in this football community that could learn a lot from Winston.

  8. WS99 Says:

Not only does he remind me of magic but also Tiger Woods, Peyton Manning and Jordan. That is to say that he is a phenom like the rest of them.

People obviously underestimate how difficult it is to go 26-1 in any competitive sport much less football.

He might be more Allen Iverson than Larry Bird but I’ll take it bc he’s a winner no matter how you spin it.

  9. Buc Neckid Says:

That EDS vs. Rookie article you referred to is a few weeks old
I wonder if he has changed his tune since they have spent more time together?

  10. The original "Kevin" Says:

By Evan…..yes its true your sh!t does stink just like everyone elses

  11. BirdDoggers Says:

Winston’s leadership and charisma are great qualities but he has to put it all together and make a difference on the field. One thing is for sure, he is not America’s QB. He’s not the QB of the Southeastern U.S. He’s not even Florida’s QB. He’s the QB of the Tampa Bay Bucs. That’s it. Nothing more, nothing less. I think he’ll do fine and I’m excited to watch him play, but I don’t think he’s done anything to deserve a fancy moniker. The Joe’s must have been in the throngs of a 3 day bender when they came up with the idea of anointing Winston as America’s QB.

  12. PocketPirate Says:

My prediction: by the end of this season he is a HUGE star!

  13. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @BirdDoggers

Annointing is the word……Joe’s naming Jameis “America’s Quarterback” is basically his way of giving the rest of the world the middle finger….Jameis has done absolutely nothing to deserve the moniker…..
Actually, for those of us who are trying to adjust to and cut slack to Jameis….it has a reverse effect…Most of us would love for Jameis to eventually become America’s QB and the Bucs America’s Team….but it does have to be earned.

  14. Ben the GA Buc Says:

The best thing about Joe’s Jameis posts is the obligatory retching and complaining by AT LEAST one person in the comments section when “America’s QB” is brought up.

    Keep on keepin’ on, Joe.

  15. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I think the best thing about Joe’s posts is that there is always at least one person in the comments section that kisses Joe’s a$$…..

  16. ben Says:

Geez, ..Joe,get off the Winston man crush .. . stop with all the articles about the guy that is NOT America’s qb until he has at least proven himself on game day.

  17. SOEbuc Says:

  20. Tiny Tim Says:

Joe has already said he calls jameis America’s Qb because he is polarizing and he is a needle mover because he is constantly talked about and written about nationally whether good or bad. The nickname has nothing to do with on the field play. He has even said that on the radio with the big dog. How some of you can get bent out of shape over a nickname is beyond me. What is even more annoying/confusing is that some constantly get bent out of shape and the reason you are complaining has nothing to do with why Joe gave Winston the nickname. Hilarious!!!

  21. Danati74 Says:

Just bought my Jameis jersey. Ugliest jersey ever, but Im all in for the support this year. We going up. EDS is in, he’s just playing hard ball with Jameis.

  22. 1976Buc Says:

Me and my family had the opportunity to spend a good bit of time with Jameis last year and he is sincerely a nice guy. He still has a lot of work to do but he’s never been afraid of hard work when needed. I have been around him during some stressful times during the season last year and I was thouroughly impressed by the professional manner he handled himself. I’m a personal fan.

I wish all great players could be classy and unselfish but in most cases they are not. Me personally, I’ll take a winner over a “pillar of society” anytime. There are only a hand full of Derrick Brooks roaming the earth. On my team Id gladly trade Mccoy for Suh. Id gladly take a dieon sanders over a ronde barber although I love me #20.

I guess I watched too much 1990s hurricane football. W’s are the bottom line. Who gives a chit if you have “great men” on the team if you can’t win 6 fckn games.

On the flip side you have america darling who is just perfect in every way but he’s a fckn cheater so there’s that too!

It’s the Jamies affect. Get use to it people.

  25. Bill Byrne Says:

I believe, in time, Jameis Winston will be a very good quarterback for the BUCS, however, expectations for the 2015 season are unrealistic and will have a lasting impact on a young quarterback’s future. “America’s Quarterback” is being led down a dead-end street by the “sports media.”

Remember: Tom Brady, Eli and Peyton Manning, Aaron Rodgers, Drew Breese and Colin Kaepernick along with Joe Flacco did not become the saviors of their teams as rookie quarterbacks. Matt Ryan and Andrew Luck are the only exceptions to this rookie reputation.

L&L have not helped Winston by relying on two rookie lineman to fix a bad offensive line and with over $20 million of cap space available today, their actions are unacceptable. Relying on other teams “waiver-wire” actions…..just will not work and never will.

A six *(6) win 2015 season for the BUCS is a modest projection.

i appreciate your perspective. it’s nice to read something from someone who has ACTUALLY spent time with Jameis versus the ignorant haters who spew garbage about and judge a person they have never met much less have interacted with. I have been on the Jameis band wagon a long time and he has done nothing to change my mind since being drafted. I am cautiously optimistic the bucs have their qb of the future.

now I am not sold on the head coach nor rigid system he insists on playing. let LVD play please.

  27. Buc1987 Says:

Tiny Tim….well said. I don’t get it either. I understood what Joe meant by it from the first time he typed it. I’ve tried to explain it too on other threads.

    People just don’t get it.

Anything new on that jersey? I saw Erik’s post a few days back.

  29. meh Says:

America’s Quarterback is the stupidest nickname.

  30. The Other Side of the Coin Says:

I get it Buc1987. It’s just not that hard – unless one has a seriously negative Winston bias. I love the way it rankles people who have to argue he hasn’t earned it.

  31. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @87

I get it……but for me, it doesn’t matter why Joe picked the nickname….He is stirring the pot and thumbing his nose (giving the finger) to all who were not in favor of Winston or even on the fence.

It’s like one of my poker buddies told me once…..”You’re a poor loser…but a much worse winner”

For me it’s time for Buc fans to come together and that means supporting Winston.

It would be helpful if the nickname wasn’t used every single time he is mentioned and Joe goes out of his way to mention Winston…..he can do what he wishes….but it can be counterproductive.

  32. Danthebucfan Says:

    @ws99

Don’t bring my man barber into this. He’s up there with alstott in the untouchable turf. Anyone else is fair game.

    Otherwise I agree with you

  33. Buccfan37 Says:

Anyway, he is “this part of America’s Quarterback”.

    —————————-

So what? Those who were not in favor of Winston or on the fence need to get over it already. If Joe is a sore winner, then those who have a problem are obviously a sore loser. It is what it is and Jameis is the QB like it or not.

FYI…………..Joe uses nicknames for most of his post ie “rock star”, “grill master” “dean of tampa radio”. It is who joe is. Those who do not like it are not forced to read his articles. Telling him how to run his blog is just as stupid as one thinking that Mariota ever had a chance at being picked by the bucs. Here is a suggestion, read the articles for the content like I do and not for the nicknames you may or may not agree with. You will enjoy the site better that way.
