Jason Licht Blasts Crab Legs Backlash

May 1st, 2015

jameis crabsWhen Joe saw the photo to the left of Jameis Winston showing off crab legs at his draft party, Joe roared.

It was a beautiful example of trolling the haters. It made Joe like Jameis even more.

Then, Joe heard the backstory, that the captain of “The Big Catch” miniseries sent an order of crab legs to Winston’s party, on the house, as sort of a present for being picked by the Bucs. The caption of Winston’s photo was, “Thanks Capt for the crab legs.”

All of a sudden this morning, the go-gooders and wet nurses were outraged, thinking Winston is mocking Publix where he famously got a crab legs hookup.

Then the photo vanished from Winston’s Instagram page. Initial reports were that the Bucs ordered Winston to remove the photo. Then, reports quickly surfaced that this was incorrect.

Bucs general manager Jason Licht  later went on the “Rich Eisen Show” and blasted the haters for trying to make a polite thank you into something just shy of the IRS going after private citizens for their political leanings.

“No one here told him to take that down. I don’t know if that’s speculation or misinformation,” Licht said. “Of course we saw it. The guy loves his crab legs. I love beer and wings. There’s a place here in town called the Press Box, if they sent me a dozen wings, I’d probably post it on my Facebook account.”

Joe just cannot fathom how this became a story in the least. Geez, folks really do have it out for Winston. Damn, man.

  1. Johnny Says:

i love crab legs and i’m starting to like Jameis Winston more and more

  2. Jim Says:

Yup….you should see the hate spewing on NFL dot com which conveniently left out the backstory.

  3. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

They were donated for charity and Winston was thanking the giver.

  4. pick6 Says:

this is gonna be life with jameis winston for a while at least. anybody remember the autograph and point shaving “scandals”? the pattern is one wave of articles accusing JW of doing something, a massive rush to judgement by the public, and then when the facts are made clear, the media has conveniently moved on to reports some other untrue thing to “scoop” the 50 other trigger-happy NFL “journalists” on twitter.

  5. Maze Says:

    So many little bitches

  6. Luther Says:

I bought crab legs from Publix yesterday too and ate them as I watched the draft. I thought it was great picture. Of course people had a cow about it but all the stories conveniently left out that the crabs were given to him (again) and he was just saying thank you. People should just get used to Gene calling his name early and often.

  7. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

Much to do about nothing. He’s our baby now, that’s all that matters folks. Now sit back and watch them wins pile up.

  8. bucrightoff Says:

So they didn’t tell him to remove it?

Related: Chip Kelly didn’t try to trade up

  9. Coburn Says:

Not necessarily a huge deal, I think what people feel is that it was a like a discernment. He needs to think a bit more as to how things may be construed by others especially after some of the negativity associated with it. It’s not likely he was trolling or anything, just didn’t think about how it may be conveyed. A bit of immaturity

  10. Love and Warrick Dunn Says:

Like I said, he will have a seafood endorsement eventually. Jameis Winston for Joe’s Crab Shack.

  11. flhillbilly Says:

    #3

  12. The Other Side of the Coin Says:

With the back story coming to light, how stupid do the haters look yet again. They talk about Winston’s maturity. Maybe they should take a long introspective look at their own.

  13. Love and Warrick Dunn Says:

Also, I see what you did there Jason, slipping your favorite wing joint into the news. There will be a free plate of wings and pitcher of beer on the house, next time he is there, I bet.

  14. jvato24 Says:

Rick Stroud is who tweeted Bucs asked him to take it down

  15. Capt.Tim Says:

Lol- hilarious. Another Media created “story”
Like all the fictions drama about the second pick yesterday.
It’s scary how often the media thinks it can lie to us- for their own agendas

  16. Snook Says:

Everyone makes fun of the FSU Twitter but the hate is real. And now the Bucs are a part of it.

The haters will continue to scrutinize and make up “facts” whenever they can on this guy. Its sad. Very sad.

  17. Johnny Dejay Says:

Of course Jason Licht is bashing the backlash, he has a vested interest in Winston’s success as a person and a player. Winston took all of about 10 minutes to do something foolish, and it makes Licht look like an idiot for drafting him.

I don’t buy the back story about the charity crab signing for one second, but even if it is true, which it isn’t, it was shortsighted and foolish of Winston to post it on Instagram because of the potential backlash. He needs to be able to think past the end of his nose.

Perception is reality, and the perception is that he openly mocked his past criminal act, showing a lack of remorse and responsibility.

And one more thing, the proof is in the pudding. If the Bucs weren’t bothered by the post, then why did they force him to delete it? That fact alone is damning evidence that the Bucs are not happy with his behavior already.

  18. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

So, Winston can never have his picture posted if there are crab legs again?

I’m no Winstonite, but this is stupid.

  19. Young buc Says:

    Dejay shutup

  20. pick6 Says:

“I don’t buy the back story about the charity crab signing for one second, but even if it is true, which it isn’t, ”

tell me who is the “Capt” he is referring to in the photo when he says “thanks Capt for the crab legs?”

  21. ufcguy Says:

The story is true. You are truly an ignorant pos. Ive never seen such hate for someone like it. Where did he get the crab legs? He didn’t sit down and think to himself man this will show them. YOU are the problem and type of person who wants this kid to mess up so badly that you can manipulate it into something its not. Get a life

  22. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Winston Wagons are already circled….that didn’t take long…..sure, its harmless….sure he should be able to eat crab legs…..sure, he should be able to have his picture taken with him…..and sure…the haters will hate….

But….this could be a FHRITP type “screw you” type in-your-face from Winston…it is simply very bad PR to give the media anything like this to distract from the very positive #1 pick news.

OK…so shoot me….I am hoping we don’t have a barrage of Winston making poor judgements in the future and since we are talking about it…this was an excercise of poor judgement.

  23. Eric Hernandez Says:

I’m just happy we gotta a GM that loves Beer and Wings. Stupid story aside how about trading for Zac Stacy? Maybe a 5th round pick.

  24. Buczilla Says:

Hey pick6 it is the Captain from “Deadliest Catch”. They met at the DB Golf Tournament (or was it the Alstott one?), and he kept ribbing Jameis about it the whole time. Apparently Winston was a very good sport about the whole thing so he told him he would send him the best crab legs he ever had and Jameis was shocked when they came on Draft Day. Kind of a cool story, nothing nefarious at all.

  25. Joseph Mamma Says:

Unless Licht was almost arrested in college for stealing wings, which I doubt, his comparison is not even close.

  26. Couch Fan Says:

This is not a exercise of poor judgement. This does not show anything about character. This does not show anything other than Winston thanking the gifter for his gift.

Stop looking for reasons not to like the guy. Just freakin pathetic. LMAO.

Can’t wait to see how mad they get when Winston helps make us relevant again.

  27. Jolly Bucs Fan Says:

I would love to sit down and eat some crab legs with #3, dinner and drinks are on me

  28. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

Man these haters are just crazy. The back story about the crab legs is true. The Captain he thanked was in fact a captain who sent them to him. These haters just ignore facts if it doesn’t fit their agenda.

There was some nut on the “GM” radio show this afternoon. The guy could barely talk he was so pissed off. He rambled and ranted for 20 minutes incoherently. He treated this crab leg picture almost as if it was the equivalent of JW punching babies. The guy seriously sounded like he needed a Valium.

  29. 5th best Qb in the NFL South Says:

Wow day 1 and he already looks like a STUPID FOOL. I hope he tears his rotator cuff in the first game. He doesnt deserve to be in the NFL .When there’s smoke there’s fire and when there’s flies there is $h!t. What an embarrassment….Lovie and Light need to go.end of story!

  30. Buczilla Says:

Hey 5th Best QB – I think your $h!t is on fire! It’s good to see Barry got a new handle…

  31. pick6 Says:

@buczilla – i know who the Captain referenced was. just making a point to those who think the story is somehow backtracking. The “thanks capt” makes zero sense relative to the trolling\gloating explanation and i’m not sure why that gets overlooked

  32. Buczilla Says:

@pick6 – Got ya. The haters in their death throes are making my head spin. Should have known that you knew better. lol

Please pout more!!! Stomp yr feet!!! Hold yr breath!!!

All the pouter tears are delicious. Thank you.

  34. pick6 Says:

@5th best – it must be wonderful being you.

  35. TeeBeeFan Says:

I laughed at the photo when I first saw it.

I’m not sure if Winston had two intents in posting the photo or if he didn’t consider the fact that others may interpret him as mocking the crab legs incident. Because he is only 21 years old and youth often do not fully think things through before doing something (no offense to the young people on this site just part of being inexperienced), I think that it was an innocent gesture on his part and he was just trying to thank the captain for the crab legs. Perhaps next time he will just send him a thank you note or shoot him a text rather than going public with the thank you.

I think the less Winston posts on instagram, facebook, twitter, etc., the better. He will have to realize that people are just going to try and spin whatever he does into something negative. But I hope that he learns to stop and think about everything he intends to post on the net before hitting submit. Otherwise, we will be hearing these type of concerns on a regular basis. Last thing we want is his internet posts to become a distraction to the team.

    Walter’s!!!!!!!!!

  37. BringBucsBack Says:

I wonder if he has he chosen the #3? Any number other than #5 please, I don’t think I can stomach it, yet.

When I heard about this picture initially, I thought it might have contained a gloating JW. This is quite innocuous and even humorous, to anyone other than the most jaded opposers. Sadly, when your past behavior is one of immature poor decisions, backlash is to be expected.

Personally, I hate twitter, facebook etc. Who cares what you ate for breakfast; paid for a pair of shoes or how thrilled you are to have gotten invited to a party? I don’t care about your and I don’t understand why others would care about my mundane activities. Like I tell my daughter; “Losers follow posts’ of losers “. Jameis and all other adults should outgrow this shallow, interactive, “reality” phenomenon.

I also can’t help but to think of all of the stupid, harmful and even criminal things that a great number of NFLer’s, past and present, have done and are doing. Yet, this offends so many?!?

  38. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @ Couch

I’m not and have never been a “hater”…..sure I have been a skeptic…..sure you can say it’s not poor judgement…unless you’re his agent negotiating something ohter than a Nike contract…..
The bottom line is that Joe has an article about it…ESPN….TMZ….NFL network….FOX….and a host of other news media have taken off on it….it is at the very least an unecessary distraction at a time when he should be putting his entire negative past to rest.
I note that Joe has even dropped the “crab-leg, bb gun shooting” disclaimer on his articles.
I don’t have a problem defending Winston because he’s a Buc…but it would sure be helpful if he thought first before he makes things public….and he either didn’t think which isn’t good….or he did think and that is worse.

  39. Wausa Says:

The press loves to knock you down when you’re the best. I love Jameis and I’m so happy he’s a Buc

  40. distraughtfan Says:

I truly believe he’s not evil, just good old fashioned STUPID! Can’t fix that, even with duct tape. Less than 24hrs and already on TMZ…..I CALLED IT!

  41. BuccaneEric Says:

5th best, HOLY $HIT!!!! WOW!!!! Very Disapointing… Not Discouraged,….. I’ll go back to Disappointed!

  42. greg Says:

When you are a low character individual and u do this kind is stuff then this is what u get.
What u see is what u get

  43. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Here is the issue regarding the crab legs.

Buc fans know and have given Winston a pass on the Publix incident….but the general public doesn’t…..they are asking “What’s with the crab legs and Winston?”

The explanation is….oh, he stole crab legs at Publix….

Now….that entire matter should’t even be a conversation going forward….but Winston’s public message made it one.

Lovie has already had to defend him to the press and he was right to dismiss it as basically, boys will be boy…..but you can best believe that prvately Winston was told to knock this $hit off!!!

  44. JoeJoes Fungi Nails Says:

Crab Leg Instagram…..poor judgement…poor taste…and after all the behavioral coaching and PR spin…he should have know better…his family and “friends” should have known better….they don’t ..he don’t…just the beginning….Jameis make poor decisions on the field too…..SMH

  45. BuccaneEric Says:

It’s a picture of crab legs, people. Crab legs. I understand why it was taken the way it was by Winston haters, but it’s a picture of crab legs. It’s crab legs. Crab legs.

  46. JoeJoes Fungi Nails Says:

“but it’s a picture of crab legs. It’s crab legs. Crab legs.”
yes and crab legs are sybolic for his thievery and bad judgement….he is a FOOL for going there WORLD WIDE….just the beginning

  47. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I’m sure his agent really loved it……I can guarantee you that companies will think twice before they sign Winston to endorse their products (Nike excluded…will take anyone)

  48. BuccaneEric Says:

It was meant as a thank you to the “captain” for the crab legs at the draft party. I understand why you feel the way you do, but most people who are commenting on it think he did it to rub it in about his “hookup”. Not the case. Was it poor judgement? Probably. But it did not have the malicious intent it has been made out to have. It’s a big deal to some people but not me. Just my opinion, I’m not right nor wrong.

  49. Buccfan37 Says:

The Winston crab leg pic was shown on the TV news this evening. Big deal! I thought the Times front page headline “Love Him or Hate Him, Now He’s a Buc” was in poor taste.

  50. Eric Says:

I would have jumped for joy if he held up a leg and said ” screw you haters”……..

Funny these people can lambast the kid but he eats crab legs as a tweetk and joke and they all fall apart.

    Hilarious.

  51. YouKillMesometimesJOE Says:

Ok Joe can you stop SUCKING WINSTONS D!€€ now… OMG!
    BucNATIONBAYPEEletsgetit!

  52. David Says:

Regardless of the intent, it shows stupidity on Winston’s part. That is a huge red flag, because the NFL history is littered with dumpster fire QBs with billion dollar arms and ten cent heads. It was a stupid move and that is undeniable.

If he wanted to thank the guy who donated the crabs, send him a note with an autographed picture or something.

I hope I’m wrong, because I’m tired of watching horrible football from the Bucs, but my take is Jameis will more likely be a giant bust than not.
