No Losing Vibe At One Buc Palace

Bucs captains spoke today

It’s painful to write. The Bucs’ record speaks volumes. Barring a trade, good teams don’t have the first selection in the draft.

Tampa Bay was 2-14 last year and is 30-70 in its last 100 games. The Bucs haven’t won a playoff game in going on 13 years.

The Bucs are not winners. But to hear the words of wide receiver Vincent Jackson and linebacker Lavonte David today from One Buc Palace, the team believes they are, or soon will be.

The vibe is “a lot more positive then you would expect after last season,” Jackson said. “It has been a really positive air since the first meeting Lovie had last week. That stuff [from 2014] is behind us. It is a fresh team with new faces in the building and new coaches. I feel like the energy in this building is really on the up and up.”

“Everybody is really happy,” David said. “The offseason is really long. Guys were happy to get back to the environment they know and talk football instead of watching basketball and baseball. We’re happy to be back at work and get things started.”

Jackson noted the freshness in attitude is part new players and part new coaches, specifically offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter.

“Great move; great move; great guy,” Jackson beamed of Koetter’s hire. “He called me in January when he got the post. I have a lot of respect for what he has done and his approach to the game. He’s a very down to earth guy. He wants to be simple and sound, fundamentally sound, and that is what Lovie harps on. [Koetter’s goal is] putting guys in position to be successful and not beating yourself. In the past, mistakes set ourselves back.”

The one bright spot in the offseason has been the hire of the OC.

  2. The Buc Realist Says:

Oh course they are happy! They are just as surprised as us as to why they still have jobs!!!

  3. you can't fix it Says:

The Buc’s need to trade down in the first round and get a lot of good picks first and second rounders and a quarter back to go with it may be Rivers …because there is a lot of holes that need to be filled and this can help the Buc’s out …….

Good reason to be optimistic especially when you make the cash that our only few good players make!

JWs Qbase score has me scared as FCK. Having doubts bc numbers don’t lie. Argh!!

  7. iamkingsu Says:

where did all of our picks go?? We were in the perfect spot picking 1 or 2 in every round. We might have to trade back round 2 to recoup a few picks that we lost bacause this is another deep draft. Its some value in the middle rounds at o-line and wide receivers

  8. Buc1987 Says:

WS99…sometimes numbers DO lie. They certainly lie in Mariota’s stats and Winston’s stats as well.

Whatever your Qbase score and all that jazz….

Chill out. I’m on cruise control for the next 2 days.

  9. NCMike Says:

Hey 87? I understand we’re gonna take Winslow as our #1 pick….. What if he sucks? I’m not trying to argue! Just wanna know how you feel about that. I’ve been watching the NFL network and they( as in several) say MM has a higher ceiling. Will you finally shut up when they’re right?

  10. iamkingsu Says:

    @ncmike

    Don’t worry he won’t suck

  11. NCMike Says:

I’m ok with either QB! Just tired of hearing the chosen one and BS! I wish the draft would be over! I’ve agreed with Bonzai more then ever

  12. Bucs fan in Chicago Says:

It’s the same every year….and I buy into it. What a sucker I am!

  13. WS99 Says:

I noticed you on chill mode. I wish I hadn’t seen that score. I understand it doesn’t account for some super important factors but that score has been accurate for a looong time. I know there’s an exception for every rule but man why does God hate the bucs so much? Lol.

  14. Buc1987 Says:

NCMike…probably not. Not for your sake anyways. I’ll just hope the Bucs finally land another franchise QB down the road…

  15. ATrain Says:

A OC will help this team..

The things being said around the Bucs is awesome

Yes it is said every year. However this year will be different.

Realize the Bucs were in several games last year. Very close games.

Bucs Fans get on the ship it is sailing to a winning season..All others go pet the jags or deadfins

  16. ben Says:

Lets go bucs !! M.M. is more accurate ,a much better athlete, and a better man then Winston so make the right pick for our new qb…….M.M. is the man !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  17. Buc2015 Says:

WS99 …. the QBASE numbers gave me a little pause as well because I am extremely bullish on JW’s NFL future, but also respect the advanced metrics. The system seems to put a lot of weight on college experience, so that the guys with just two years starting are all at the bottom (Couch, Carr, Vick, JW). My personal opinion is that Jameis will blow up the QBASE model, cause its creator to re-work his algorithm. There are outliers and exceptions to every model and I think Jameis is a good bet to play at the “Elite” level that QBASE gives him only a 3.3% chance of reaching.

  18. Buc1987 Says:

    “Don’t worry about a thing,

    Rise up this mornin’,
    Smiled with the risin’ sun,
    Three little birds
    Each by my doorstep
    Singin’ sweet songs
    Of melodies pure and true,
Saying’, (“This is my message to you”)

Singing’ “Don’t worry ’bout a thing,
‘Cause every little thing gonna be alright.”

    Jameis is coming to Tampa!

  19. JoeJoes Fungi Nails Says:

I was excited this time last year after reading similar PR…..crushed at what I saw during the home opener against the Panthers….

  20. Clodhopper Says:

Everybody is happy because they know they no longer have Garo Yepremian under center stinking up the joint!

  21. bucrightoff Says:

Still waiting for some Slayer lyrics 87. You can do it, I know you can.

  22. The Other Side of the Coin Says:

The good news is that the Bucs are going to either get one of two high potential quarterbacks, or enough draft picks to start a new franchise. How good is that. My choice is JW. If it’s MM by some chance I’ll live with it. If it’s trade, it’d better be historic or I’ll be finding something else to entertain me. Ya just don’t screw up this kind of opportunity. I’ve waited far too long for a team to be proud of.

It doesn’t cost me a thing to be optimistic so optimistic I am. Sad it is for those who post nothing but hate. Just glad I’m not them.

  23. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @87

People get ready, there’s not a train wreck comin’
You don’t need no baggage, you just get on board
All you need is faith and hear 87 hummin’
You need no get your ticket and pray to the lord

People get ready, there’s a train called Jameis
Picking up fans from coast to coast
Faith is the key, open the doors and board them
There’s hope for all those who loved Mariota the most
There ain’t no room for the hopeless hater whom would hurt all mankind

Famous Jameis is 2 days away from putting a fitted Bucs cap on his head! I’m so excited, I bought season tickets this year back in Febuary..banking on him Qbing are Buccaneers this upcoming season! Finally some hope for a football city that so desperately needs it, it’s been years since I’ve been this excited enough to actually want to attend Bucs games again… HOPE, is all I can ask for, & HOPE is something that King Jameis will definitely bring!! Fire the cannons!!!!!

2 more days til our first real Franchise QB!

  31. BuccaneEric Says:

I hope to god that Winstons the real deal. I don’t think I can take it if he busts!! All of the talk the last few weeks has me nervous. If we pick the wrong guy we’ll never hear the end of it!

  32. Buc1987 Says:

    TBBF…nice. 🙂

  33. port richey george Says:

every year the trading up talk escalates as the draft day approaches. then during the draft there are very few blockbuster trades. most gm’s and coaches aren’t willing to risk their draft and jobs to move up for one player that might be a bust. Cleveland, Chicago, jets & eagles seem to be the teams rumored the most this year to trade up.

  34. Eric Says:

I believe most of you have your expectations set WAY TOO HIGH for Winston….

    Simple as that……

  38. tval Says:

Singing’ dont worry, about a thing..lol!!

  39. tval Says:

Or maybe regardless where our expectations for jameis are, his own expectations of himzelf remain greater. Isnt that all that matters when hes willing to work literally as hard as anyone to achieve that ceiling? One would hope

  40. Buc1987 Says:

    The Chosen One.

  41. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @ Tom Edrington

I agree completely……the selling and defending of Winston by Joe and others has placed Winston on a pedestal….and set high expectations.
He will be a rookie (2 year college) on a pretty bad team 2-14 with an awful Oline.

Actually, those of us who are skeptical or more cautious are in a good position to be more patient with him.

I come down on the side that we have very little to lose actually…and we need to roll the dice and hope his coaches can get the best out of him.

I sure am glad we have Koetter…..because Winston just wasn’t forced on him….he knows what he is getting and is obviously on board.

  42. Lord Cornelius Says:

My fiance is trying to get shirts made that have Winston’s face on a crabs body. We are going all out for this.

Walterfootball has nailed the #1 pick every year I can find (I went back to like 2009; although #1 picks from 09-10 were signed ahead of time because the new CBA hadn’t been incorprated. They were the first putting Winston #1 and haven’t changed for months.

  43. Love and Warrick Dunn Says:

  49. LargoBuc Says:

Patience is vital but progress is expected. 6-10 would look pretty good after last year. 9-7 is possible but alot would have to go our way. Hopefully we are playing for the lowly south week 17 in Carolina.

If you people are already defending Winston coming in and sucking that’s pitiful. He us graded to suck. Threw 18 int’s in second year of was ACC defenses (easy). You want him and your already giving a pass because his throwing motion is slower than his running ability. Lets not even mention his decision making.

  52. Buc1987 Says:

Jody …quit crying. I want him because he’s going to be OUR pick.

You can cheer for the Bucs with Winston or YOU can go away for awhile…

  53. Buc1987 Says:

    Cause Buc1987 said so!

  54. Gator N Bucs Says:

I just realized that the Bucs have had Two seasons where they lost Every Home Game. 1976, which I sat second row 40 yard line for every game, and 2014 under the L&L regime where I watched every game from my neighbor’s couch.
I feel old and the Bucs should be ashamed to have Two Home-winless season in less than 40 years

I came across his salary. he gets big $$$

  59. tval Says:

Goodells salary is insulting to vets. I think the pressure on mariota, especially if drafted by eagles, is enormous. Hes perfect fit in his supposed college system (not entirely true) They actually believe he can start day 1, which is a ridiculous notion even in a similar offense. They do not run the same route tree in philly so its even gonna take time under chip and his west coast o coord as well. If marcus flounders everyone will try and punish every single rg/colin/alex or even an athlete as amazing as vick with the obvious potential he had for greatness by saying “well, marcus couldnt do it in the perfect scenario” i can hear it already

  60. Gator N Bucs Says:

    Jameis Christ Superstar!

  63. Buccos Says:

Can’t wait for Mariotas name to be called first. He will be here for the next 15 years and be an All-Pro many times over. All of the Winston lovers can become Tennessee fans I guess. If the Bucs didn’t make a play for Hardy they aren’t going after Winston!

  64. WantstaStayaBuc Says:

Either 87 and his bretheren are going to have their mancrush pulled out from underneath them or I am gone for a few seasons. I expect that Lovie and crew have sent enough signals that the morally corrupt ACC QB is going to be here soon that I should start packing.
I’ve decided to root for the Packers until Jameis and his enablers are gone. Green Bay literally owns their team, unlike Tampa Bay; the Bucs don’t seem to care about our town. My wife is from Green Bay (I was born and raised in St. Pete) and Brats are awesome on gameday. I know, I know. I won’t be missed.

Don’t get all “true Buc fan” on me. I was here their very first season and have been since (no joke). I just can’t suppot the win at all cost mentality. Winston is not a good guy, The fact that the Bucs (and Deion Sanders) knows that he need a baby sitter is enough for me to know that the Bucs have lost their way.

See you in three years when he’s gone or sooner if the Bucs see reason.

    Wantsta

  65. SOOFIERCE Says:

JW has me sold that he wants a Championship in the NFL ever so badly as we do!

    Go Bucs

  66. Gator N Bucs Says:

  67. Andrew 1 Says:

  72. Andrew 1 Says:

Again, good for you. We probably won’t be seeing ya for another 10 years then. I have the same feelings that you have but towards Cutler, yet somehow I think I would still be able to root for the bucs even if we were to get him, because its not about an individual player, its about the BUCS. But hey, Adios.

  73. WantstaStayaBuc Says:

    LoL

Dunn, I assure you, I am not him but we are not alone. You guys are backing a player that many simply cannot support. We love our town, but the Bucs are not the hometeam this time.

Winning at all cost costs everything.

At the moment, Bovada lists Winston as a 1-to-15 favorite to be selected first overall. That implies Winston has a 93.75 percent chance of being taken atop the draft.

Bovada lists two other choices for the No. 1 pick. Oregon quarterback Marcus Mariota is 15-to-2, while the field — all other players — is 9-to-1.

    Sorry, I’m scarred.

  80. lurker Says:

  81. Andrew 1 Says:

After watching that 1983 draft on NFL network, honestly we are lucky that Winston is not pulling a John Elway and refusing to even come play for us. Our situation is bad enough that nobody would blame Winston if he did that. As it stands though, it looks like we are going to get the best QB in the draft! And dare I say the best QB SINCE Andrew Luck!!!

  85. The True Buc Fan Says:

My thought is, let the proffessionals do thier job, Jason Licht will make the right decision. I think he gave Lovie to much say in alot of things last year, and he has told Lovie, you coach, I’ll build this team. He has learned from a man who has 4 rings. I SEE THE LICHT!

  86. bucs4lyfe Says:

0-0. one primetime game but if you play well the networks will give them those flex schedule slots especially if our new quarterback is doing well. all people can say right now is we WERE 2-14 LAST YEAR. it’s a new year people time to get amped up
