Today’s happy Lovie Smith photo, courtesy of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The head coach is dreaming of Jameis Winston on his way to work out Marcus Mariota in Oregon.

The NFL Draft starts in 23 days — 23 days!

But there is still more work to be done by the scouting gurus at One Buc Palace.

Lovie Smith and friends are now on fancy private plane headed to Oregon to work out Ducks quarterback Marcus Mariota today, far away from TV cameras.

Per NFL Network, the Bucs’ big guns will get back on the plane and run Jameis Winston through his own private workout tomorrow.

Oh, the drama.

It’s hard for Joe to imagine the Buccaneers drafting Mariota, assuming this guy stops butting his nose in , but it’s easy to imagine the Bucs being intrigued by talk of the Chargers looking to trade stud QB Philip Rivers.

    Only way to go…..

  3. knucknbuc Says:

Can’t lie Joe I wouldn’t mind seeing the bucs actually draft mariota just to see you backtrack and say u always accept him would be hilarious.

Your qb track record is hilariously bad so wouldn’t surprise if you would be wrong here.

Okay, Joe has archives that are free and easy to find. Readers easily can see that Joe was fully all-in for Manziel and Bridgewater last year, and not all-in for Bortles and Carr. –Joe

  4. Patrick in VA Says:

Way more interested in getting to the 25 day mark. First round is going to be big but those other 6 rounds are going to answer a lot of the questions that I still have about where we’re going and what the team sees as the big issues facing the team

  5. TheDon Says:

Marcus should be offended the bucs are wasting his time.

  6. Supersam Says:

Dang that’s a huge smile on Lovies face, Dreams of Mariota are dancing in his head. So if Winston is a 100 percent a sure pick, why waste the money and man hours scouting Mariota? That’s what I thought.

  7. 87SizeXLCreamsicle! Says:

The remaining MM fans on this site, are like precious, cute, little, fluffy kittens to me. So helpless.

  8. 87SizeXLCreamsicle! Says:

Ahhhh there’s one right there. How cute?

  9. Patrick in VA Says:

@Supersam – You’re living on a prayer Bon Jovi. The way you cling to every little sliver of anything that you can spin doctor toward your need for confirmation bias is tough to watch unfold. That is the smile of a man who has had a camera shoved in his face and he is placating because that’s what he’s supposed to do. This is hardly the first year that a coach has done a visit and workout with a player that they have no real interest in. You’re going to work yourself in to a tizzy only to be let down in a big way

Lovie likes Duck sauce on his egg rolls….Welcome to Tampa Mariota!

  11. Patrick in VA Says:

I saw a report that said that Jason Licht had a Hawaiian pizza sent to OBP yesterday. I think that says everything that needs to be said

Because unlike you, they dont pretend to know everything. Even if they arent interested in the player, you have to do everything you can to make sure that what you think you know is validated by what you find out in investigating and researching…..

Or they could just take the supersam route and run there mouth every chance they get and make themselves look stupid when they are proven wrong time and time….

I would personally go with the 1st option.

    Welcome to Tampa, Jameis!

  13. The Buc Realist Says:

Lovie is watching more of Family guy and The Cleveland show like he did when he was in his basement for a year!

  14. Patrick in VA Says:

@Realist – No way man. That’s way too contemporary for Lovie. He strikes me as more of a Petticoat Junction kinda guy.

  15. Bryce Says:

Bucs brass might be trying to draw trade interest by flying down to Oregon.Maybe Tony got in the head of Lovie to draw interest in Mariota.Who knows but at least there keeping their options open I plaued them for that.I still feel that Chip wants his boy someone that from day one can run his offense he has trade bait (Bradford Murray) Everyday it’s something new and the one name that keeps coming up is Mariota.

  16. IdahoBucsfan Says:

Looks like he is remembering his record from last year and how he brought in and continued to play josh mcclown! 🙁

  17. Eric Says:

    Sweet looking plane!

Good for them working for working out Marcus. They are completing their procedures and due diligence as they said they would.

This has been planned for awhile, its not some recently hatched ploy.

After Jameis tomorrow nothing to do but wait till draft day and see if some “can’t be turned down” offer comes our way.

    1. Prudence. You have the 1st Pick, so you can take ANY player.
    2. Odds are some team is going to grab him and he will then be an OPPOSING QB and knowledge is power.
    3. Down the road MM might not pan out as a starter but might be a decent backup, you never know.
    4. Why are they flying out to Oregon? Because they can and it doesn’t hurt if you have a private aircraft to do so in.

I do not think there is ANYTHING Mariota is going to show to pull them away from Jaboo. But with 23 days left, you never know if something crazy happens with Winston like he runs over a dog or looks at a blonde chick and TMZ gets the picture.

Going to be a long 23 days.

  19. robert 9 Says:

looks like lovie is dreaming of the big trade back once they trick everyone of their interest in JW and MM

  20. port richey george Says:

given a choice I would prefer the bucs take a player at another position other than QB with the top draft pick or trade down from the top pick. the bucs need a defensive end, middle linebacker and oh yeah…an entire offensive line. the person that is obsessed with Rachel Watson definitely does have a personal issue with glennon. he would take any QB other than mike glennon. many teams are going to be salivating like Pavlov’s dog to get mike glennon if the bucs make the mistake to sign jameis leftwich-winston.

  21. charactermatters Says:

    Patrick
spindoctor? You mean like when Buccaneer coach or GM has a big smile on there face when Jameis is involved it is because he will be their pick and when heading to work out Mariota with a big smile it is because they’re dreaming of Jameis?

  22. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @ Patrick….

Read my latest posts on the TV issue…..Manziel was at 7 with the premier last year as was Andrew Luck……ESPN doesn’t burry anything at 7….they lead off with what they believe are their most interesting episodes….

  23. JMan Says:

It would be interesting if MM wows them at the workout.

  24. Bucs_Sam Says:

has anyone checked if Joe has secured JoeWinstonFan-dot-com yet?

Just saying, someone should snag that spot up, Joe will pay good money for it.

I’m thinking of securing PhredPhinsPhan dot com for all the Anti-Winstons who claim they will jump (pirate) ship to Miami if (when) he is selected by TB.

  26. gcarr74 Says:

Remember when Lovie needed a QB he traded his first for Cutler. Joe points out Rivers is available. I would love that trade

  27. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

If I were the Glazers and knew for certain they were taking Winston, I wouldn’t foot the bill on a private jet to see Mariota. Fly them coach. Save money.

After all, if they really have made up their minds, what is the point?

However, if they have not totally made up their minds, it does make sense…and it throws all of you Winstonites off.

Because we really do not know which QB they will draft. I don’t care what the mocks say. Mocks are more wrong than right.

Personally, I just want whichever will be a great long term solution for the Bucs. LONG TERM. And I’m not against sitting either one for 8-16 games either. Because I’m more interested in long term.

I can see it now though…if the pick ends up being Mariota, every Winstonite here (except Joe) will scream for Lovie’s head. Even though right now it is obvious they are using due diligence.

  28. robert 9 Says:

    meh,

  29. Drew Says:

With the 1st pick of the 2015 NFL Draft the Tampa Bay Buccaneers select MM and the MM mob goes wild. The MM mob members pick up their buckets of tar and feathers and venture out to find Joe and other JW mob members.

  30. 87SizeXLCreamsicle! Says:

Oh no Bonzai on the contrary I’ll except Mariota with welcoming arms.

If the all the mocks, analysts and “experts” we’re all saying the pick was going to be Mariota. You sure as shyte would believe them then, wouldn’t you. I know I would that’s for sure.

I know most of MM fans would cite them daily on this site. That I do know.

I like Mike Evans, I hate seeing that abortion that was the 2013 season, but I am also glad we did not take Bridgewater. Winston is the better player.

He’s watching “my little pony” without question. He’s researching how to build his team. Pink Fluffy Unicorns Dancing on Rainbows. He’s on his way to see “rainbow dash” now. Lmao. Btw anyone catch the “hugs and kisses” episode on nfln last night starring the one and only #93? Yup a personal interview and they named it hugs and kisses, you can’t make this up. #rotf

  34. Bobby4919 Says:

I think they’re sitting on the tarmac faking the photo (look at the map on the bulkhead). They’re either not going, or Lovie’s holding the takeoff until his show is over.

They are also there to touch base with Fisher (OT)….

Is that supposed to be funny? I now know not to take you seriously. There is no winstondefensefund.com That’s stooping pretty low even for you.

  37. Bobby M Says:

Dante Fowler is coming by OBP within the week…..He’s a defensive end….Its a copy cat league and Lovie loves what Seattle has.

The only certainty I have in regards to the draft is that I will be watching it unfold while consuming several adult beverages. Oh, and the other certainty is that the Bucs are picking Winston!!!

  41. tval Says:

Lmao @ “looks at a blonde chick and tmz gets the pics” sam and drew would offer their charitable wives to set that stage. 🙂

  42. rayjay1122 Says:

In the 2012 season the Bucs last faced Rivers. Here is what happened:
Rivers threw for 337 yards and three TDs for San Diego. However, he was intercepted twice in the fourth quarter to ruin any chance of the Chargers (4-5) coming from behind resulting in a loss to our Bucs 24-34. I have nothing against Rivers but no way I take him over Winston. Just my opinion though. I know some folks can give valid arguments for the logic in making a deal with San Diego but I would not take the bait.

  43. bo Says:

    I think RyanLeafIsJamarcusRussellisJameisWinston.com is available

  44. StPeteBucsFan Says:

    @rayjay

Depends on the deal doesn’t it? My concern with Rivers is that he’s getting some mileage on those old tires. And I won’t debate whether Fameis is better or not he “could”be. But Rivers is good enough to get us to the SB if we had a great team around him. And so it depends how much S.D. did to sweeten the deal.

If S.D. gave us Rivers and their #1 I’d have to consider that big time. A proven QB not a prospect and the 17th and 34th picks in the draft! We could get the LT and an edge rusher! Rivers would give us 5 years to find a better QB..

  45. rayjay1122 Says:

    @SPBF
Valid points. I also am not for it due to Rivers age. If and it is if Winston can be a star, I would need a lot more from SD than Rivers and the 17th pick. We do have many needs though and getting a proven solid starter plus more picks could be enticing. I just would not want to lose out on Winston who could turn out to be better than Rivers and much more tread on the tires.
