Licht’s Phone “Ringing Off The Hook”

April 23rd, 2015

phone

It appears Bucs general manager Jason Licht is a popular guy these days. No, not because he needs a beer.

You see, Licht holds the key to acquiring Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston. Licht wants him. Other teams want him. The Bucs need him. But apparently, quite a few general managers also covet young Jameis.

That is the word from long-time NFL writer Mike Freeman of Bleacher Report. It seems Freeman has a mole at One Buc Palace who claims Licht very likely will go past his cell phone minutes plan because of all the team executives trying to lure the rights to Winston away from him.

A Buccaneers source tells me the team’s phone is “ringing off the hook” with teams calling about the possibility of trading up.

Now, I know this leak is self-serving. The Buccaneers want the impression out there that a number of teams want the top pick, thus possibly driving up the market value. But I trust this person wholeheartedly and believe it.

This is also an indicator of something else. Teams are reverting back to the theory that you draft a player who will help you win, no matter the player’s baggage.

Well, it is also indicates more. The first is that Winston is a damned good quarterback. If you don’t have a quarterback, you are wetting your pants weekly in the NFL. How many times has Joe had to type that?

If Winston were, say, an offensive tackle, his background might scare a few NFL executives. But he’s a quarterback, the most important position on a team in a pass-happy league. Need trumps paranoia.

Teams slobbering for Winston also indicates — despite what a number of fans want you to believe — those who make a living in the NFL grading talent are not widely won over by Marcus Mariota when compared to Winston, which is what Joe has been hearing for months.

@JOE: I am as much a fan of winston as the next guy – looks like a great prospect with a high ceiling. However, with so many “off-the-field” incidents over the last couple of years (even though he hasn’t been convicted etc etc.) how can anybody possibly expect him to be good for the next 10-15 years as a franchise qb???

give him a ton of cash and the keys to the franchise and surely problems will crop up time and time again? even if he does play well

  4. Buc1987 Says:

James…you should have been in here 3 months ago when we were talking about it then. You should have been in here 2 months ago when we were talking about it then. You should have been in here a month agao when we were talking about it then. You should have been in here last week when we were talking about it then.

You should have been in here yesterday when we were talking about it then…

  5. Phil Says:

We need Winston more than what other teams can offer unless the offer includes Aaron Rodgers. We need a franchise quarterback something this team has never had more than we need draft picks. Licht should turn his phone off and pick Jameis.

  6. ToesOnTheLine! Says:

Joe, did Mike Freeman’s mole specifically say teams want to trade up for Winston, or are you assuming this? There are some other pretty good players in this draft worthy of the #1 pick after all, so I was curious?

  7. tbaybuc Says:

    please Draft, start already!

  8. tval Says:

I agree, phil. Irsay could offer luck and id literally laugh and ask where are the additional 1st rounders? This kid is special.

  9. ToesOnTheLine! Says:

    @ tval

Huh!?!? You seriously wouldn’t trade the #1 pick for Andrew Luck?

  10. tval Says:

Time to forget about the past, pearls. The teams all say he checks out, so, why do folks like you keep questioning things far beyond your expertise? True exercise in futility. The jameis haters die a thousand deaths each day

  11. Buc1987 Says:

I’ve been a pretty big Luck fan since his Stanford days. I’ll say this right now. Jameis will be better than Luck in the long run. Winston has been playing 2 sports for most of his young life. He’s now at the point where he can concentrate on just one. So I think his ceiling is still VERY high.

I also picked the Colts to go to the SB last season, that’s how much I like Luck.

  12. BirdDoggers Says:

It would interesting to know what compensation the teams are offering to trade up. I don’t think there would be a trade package enticing enough for the Bucs to pass on Winston, unless the package included a QB they covet. You never know. Licht, Lovie and the Glazers probably have a threshold. If the trade compensation is substantial enough, the Glazers could ultimately decide Winston isn’t worth whatever the compensation would be.

  13. tval Says:

Nope. Jameis wld never disappear in a championship game like luck just did. Take that to the bank. I like luck, but hes already exceeded my expectations. And does an afc champ losing team need the biggest free agency splash if hes so amazing? Ask yourself. Ill say today, jameis beats luck in indy and looks far superior doing so. Watch lucks delivery and get back to me about jameis, then you’ll see im a true qb from way back..rodgers, moss, and jameis are the only 3 players last 15 years Id have traded up to 1st pick to acquire

  14. bucs4lyfe Says:

After the season how could they do anything but draft a quarterback, this defense may not be top 10 but it wont be as bad as last year’s team. you wont have this chance again and with mike glennon as the quarterback he could just as easily get fired for not taking a quarterback as he could making the wrong pick. I think if blake bortles and ryan tannehill can be top 10 qb’s out of the draft Winston can too so just make the pick

  15. tval Says:

I agree, buc..jameis has to work, as we expect. But like you say his ceiling is higher compared to lucks who is very promising. Luck doesnt have the same velocity, accuracy, or natural anticipation/timing. His amazing prep makes up for anticipation, like peyton, but when it breaks down its still ugly from the pocket for andrew. Jameis thrives in that moment far more than andrew does. Please dont mistake this as me saying andrew isnt a great player, just take it as i believe jameis will absolutely shock, this season, all those trying to say he doesnt belong in the same sentence as luck. Time will tell

  16. Clodhopper Says:

Dont fudge this up, Licht!! We’ve only got 7 days to go. Figuratively speaking, Those teams calling are like a nice yummy chocolate bar dangling in front of you. You’re on a diet, Licht. Don’t reach for that chocolate bar!! Keep away!

  17. ATrain Says:

Oh ya we haven’t hear one thing about a Team wanting Winston until today..Its been teams wanting Mariota..

Now all of a sudden everyone wants Winston..

Bucs PR move…There was a article several weeks ago about the Bucs selling Winston to the fans..

    Yep sales job..

Take Winston..Roll the dice…But you better not crap out cause the Glazers have no problem FIRING COACHES…Oh and after your fired from here you can count on working as a backs coach or a fill in TV commentator…

  18. Dreambig Says:

People keep bringing the off feild stuff so lets look at that:
11-25-12 BB gun fight with playmate Age 18
    12 -7-12 Erica Kinsman Incident Age 18
7-12-13 Burger King Soda debacle Age 18
5-20-14 Inappropriate crab acqusition Age 19
    9-14-14 Inappropriate Language Age 19

Except for the sexual encounter, this is all really stupid activities of a college kid (I know, I raised two of them and they really do mind blowing stupid things until about age 22). Once the sexual allogation happened, the media has really done a pretty through hatchet job on this kid. Just read the SI piece about now he is changing his story. Another example of a hatchet job. Winston thought he was speaking privatly with Harbough and staff, instead they filmed it and released a conversation in which he though he was being mentored by adults in the room. Nieve on Winston’s part yes, but jeese, the kid is barely 21 years old.

  21. AstuteFL Says:

Take Mariota at #1 or trade down. Winston is a liar. He originally stated he forgot to pay for the crab legs, now he’s saying they were given to him? Make up your mind. The girl that accused him of rape is going to have a field day with this one.

Nothing else will matter once games start getting won.

A team that goes 10-6, 11-5 and 12-4 most years fill stadiums, move merchandise and save careers. And THAT is what all of this is about.

Moral high ground is easy to take when you work in a warehouse or Wal-Mart, but when your lifestyle depends on winning games reality sets in.

  27. P'cola Buc Says:

The fans have longed for a chance of a franchise QB forever and we have that chance to roll the dice now. It’s rare for the chance to do so but we have the number one pick now. This is a rare opportunity so we absolutely need to go for it. Winston is more pro ready… At the very least choose one of these top 2 QBs with the #1 pick.

  28. bucs4lyfe Says:

    @Dreambig

there’s nothing we can do, once you hate on someone it will be that way forever, all you’ll get is excuses why they don’t like him. best we can do is band them from the bandwagon during the season and give them an extra hard time when they attempt to give him the credit they wont do now

different between mariota mob and winstonites is we atleast acknowledge mariota is good and has skill but he’s just not better than Winston. mariota mob wont even attempt to acknowledge one positive thing about Winston’s skills or personality but they insist they aren’t hating its really mind boggling.

he was accused of stealing soda from burger king but nothing came of it and never charged just questioned…..no one cares about that or even mentions that but accused of rape and they attempted to bring up charges 6 times and he did it? she’s a Zephyrhills girl and its crazy this has less evidence but r kelly came to this city and ended up embarrassing an under age girl on video tape and seemed no one cared, he actually became more popular and sold even more records. he paid her and it went away no one cared. theres no evidence to prove he did or didn’t but yea keep going with conspiracy theory…..

Milwaukee Journal Sentinel lol your kidding right?

  35. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

Wow. Idiocy seems to be contagious in these comments. Winston better than Luck????

That’s just stupid. And deceptive. The man hasn’t even proven he can make the transition to the NFL yet. Luck is a sure thing with at least 10 years left in the tank.

I mean, it will never happen though, because the Colts know good quarterbacks, and they would never offer that trade and downgrade.

The thing I hate about this…

…is the lack of accountability. If Winston is a bust, all of you…ALL OF YOU…will blame Lovie Smith for taking him, and will not remember how dedicated you are to the pick yourselves.

EVEN IF the Bucs take him and they go 9-7 (impossible; but devils advocate here), you will want Lovie fired and want Dirk as head coach.

    Just watch.

  36. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

    @JFF

That link has nothing to do with Jameis Winston.

  37. P'cola Buc Says:

Winston has been ranked the number #1 QB in this draft by the vast majority of those who make a living in part by doing so. The Bucs have a chance to draft him. A chance for a potential franchise QB. No JFF, it would be incompetent for the Bucs NOT to draft him.

  42. rayjay1122 Says:

I sure can’t wait for the draft. I obviously can’t predict the future or else I would have won the power ball numerous times and be living the good life for the rest of my days but I really do think Winston is and should be our pick.

    @AstuteFL

Jameis is shown in the surveillance video at Publix to walk right up to the counter bypassing the line and being handed the crab legs. Did he lie? Yes. Was the motive of his lie to protect a friend? It looks that way. Loyalty goes further in my book than the telling of a lie and I am sure in your life you have lied for more self serving reasons than to protect a friend. I am not going to waste anymore time defending Jameis from the ignorance of some people. You can’t change stupidity. I just hope everyone that hates Winston will stick to their convictions and become fans of new teams. You do not deserve to enjoy our winning seasons in the future with him at the helm after bashing him this whole time. How about being semi-intelligent and give compelling reasons why the Bucs should pass on Winston for his play on the field? Show all of the ways that the other QB’s in the draft are so superior in talent to Winston. I mean just do us a favor and bring something, anything new to the table. Winston did a couple of dumb things in college but he is a very intelligent young man who is passionate about football with tremendous leadership and skills but why would we want a QB like that? Why don’t we want the second coming of Jack Thompson Err Mariota? IF we take Mariota, I will support the decission and be his biggest fan because I am a Bucs fan without an agenda. I just want to have fun again during the season instead of being depressed week in and week out which has been my standard state since all of my favorite teams (Bucs, Gators and Bulls) have all been a joke the past few seasons. So, yeah I want Winston and an OL that can actually block so that we can enjoy the product on the field. So all of the Winston bashers, let he who is without sin cast the first stone!

There you go again thinking the bloggers here have no intelligence writing such untruths. In reality, Winston is known as a motivator, leader and is well liked by his team mates. You are only further discrediting yourself with such statements not based on reality. I suppose a Winston hater will say just about anything but readers are wiser than that.

  50. tval Says:

Anyone else notice how quickly the fsu & jimbo “always lose a head-scratcher, and are annually overrated”, to ” jameis isnt great the team is just loaded” and the most worrisome of all “the nfl is changing now, mariota is the future but luck is the best qb ever.” yeah, as soon as the young phenom pocket passing black qb is the next new-wave “the nfl is changing”..i myself dont look at race, whatsoever. But to try and use this flawed reasoning totally without precedent to try to diminish jameis as a prospect is insanity. They’ve lost the off the field battle they were so heavily invested in (dont follow sports media for news) and it hurts their soul mariota isnt even in the same stratosphere as s prospect. Like i said 2 mos ago, “Marcus should write jameis a check on draft day if he goes top 10-15.” Jameis cursing at school possibly made him millions..lol!! Well, at least if mayock were a gm..:)

I would personally pay $20 to watch Barry the creepy car thief wail like a little btch!

  54. Winston>Mariota Says:

This article is a fabrication of reality. Switch out JW for MM and its still a fabrication. No team is calling for a player that has not yet been drafted. They are calling for the #1 pick and draft position. Period end of story.

But now WINSton(Who in my opinion is a white QB in a black man’s body)is coming along with all his bravado the league is now changing. S@$! is hilarious at best. Pocket QBs have and always will continue killing these athletic run around arse type QBs. That will never change.

Once Nike signed Jameis the other NFL teams took notice. See Nike could have waited for him to get settled into the league let some of the backlash blow over to sign him ( Tiger,Kobe resigned after the storm blew over). Now teams see a major corporation is willing to take that public beating and backlash for a guy who is allege of doing such a horrible crime , maybe NFL exec’s are having second thoughts about winning at all cost over public blow back. You actually have a good point bro. The problem is….
Fans screem when a player DOES something stupid. But, no need to screem now because Jameis has not only a clean slate, but a brand new slate. If/when hes does something stupid as a Buc (if we draft him), the true fans (even us Winstonites) will lead the charge when asking him to be held accountable.
All you guys with the same old line about Winston and trouble are going too far. Who says he will screw things up?
Who says that Marcus “lead foot” Mariota doesnt go out and buy himself a nice little sports car with his signing bonus, and instead of just getting a ticket this time, be hits a pedestrian.
The point is….. saying Winston will just steal again, or bring a bb gun to RayJay to shoot out windows, or take over the announcers booth and start a cussing frenzy is just as crazy as saying Mariota is a speed freak and will surely end up racing street kids on the Gandy Bridge on Saturday nights before a home game. Ican tell the future. But, when comparing the two QBs, im going with the one thats NFL ready.

    Just draft Jameis already!!!!!!!

I am not directing this at those who legitimately have a problem even after educating themselves. He made some bad choices people have a right to be skeptical. I agree he is polarizing. But he is not a predator and the national guard will not be patrolling the streets after the bucs draft him next week

I am directing this squarely at the fools who still cry rape, felon, Maziel comparisons, yadda yadda yadda… Barry is just another store, my mother always taught me to play nice with the mentally challenged so I’ll be nice today Barry… Have fun at recess. I am not one to judge anyone’s opinion if its based on fact but if it’s delusional propaganda and snapshots of stats is your only facts, well you are fair game.

Those who are blindly hating winston are bandwagon fans and bandwagon cause hoppers. Some other pc group will get pissed off about midgets not being allowed to ride space mountain or something similar and they will jump on that cause. Their attention spans are very short.

Winston is not a risk! Lovie and his horrendous personnel decisions are the biggest risk the bucs face. That is an undisputed fact. If anyone has 100% Lovie will do the right thing personnel wise I have some ocean front property in Wyoming for you.

No offense to any of the little people not my intent offend, just an example. To the pc police you get the HAND so don’t even bother with your opinions and comments… Save the useless over sensitive garbage for someone who gives a crap. I believe that Licht said the more they met with Jameis and looked into his background, the more comfortable they became.

And that appears to be true of other teams who did the same.

Of course its beyond the pale of possibility that the bucs have way more info on Jameies than the haters do for which to base their decision.

Such as actually meeting the guy.

  66. Bogeyking Says:

Jason said in his presser 2 days ago that he had not had any formal offers for that #1 pick.
If people are calling, they are teams that are trying to jump ahead of the Titans to get a shot at Mariota. Teams are not going to mortgage their future to get a QB that may be washed out or be a huge risk and gamble like Winston.
Bucs should be on the phone with the Chargers

  67. MarshallU Says:

Winston was handed his bag but bypassed the register and proceeded to leave the store. That’s called SHOPLIFTING my friends, a form of retail STEALING
Publix released an official statement late yesterday stating that their own extensive investigation showed that there was absolutely NO HOOKUP
Winston’s just a common thief who’s ego and sense of self-entitlement makes him think that he can get away with anything, because so far that has been the case

  69. rayjay1122 Says:

    @ Gator

You can call me an idiot. That is your right just as much as it is my right to call you an idiot for your views. Idiot!

  70. Love and Warrick Dunn Says:

    @Marshall

Feel free to believe whatever you want. It’s not going to change the fact he will be drafted by TB at #1 next week.

You can root for him, root against him, find a new team, don’t find a new team…but, he will be Tampa’s next QB.

  71. rayjay1122 Says:

Maybe Winston is a thief. If so maybe he will steal some wins for us on Sundays this season. Winston and the 40 thieves!!! Funny how no one is attacking the IRS or other government agencies for stealing money from hard working citizens every day and wasting it on their own extravagant lifestyles and special interest groups who also line the palms of politicians to promote personal agendas. No, there are no thieves to attack, just attack Winston right? Maybe Winston should not be our QB but instead should be a Governor, Congressman or Senator since they are professional liars and thieves!!!

  72. Bucs#1 Says:

If teams are calling, then they are calling about that #1 pick to grab Mariota or Williams. Nobody would give up that much to draft a problem and probable bust like JaMarcus “Turd” Winston

  73. Nuckinfutz Says:

    SUPERMARIO!!!SUPERMARIO!!!SUPERMARIO!!!

  74. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

I’m willing to bet yo ass a bust buc#1.

  75. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

We’ll see how super he is when lines up across from the Buccs week one. That is if even wins the job.

  76. rayjay1122 Says:

I give up!!! Pass on Winston so we can continue to suck!!! You haters win!! Lets just stock pile picks since Mariota is by far not #1 pick worthy and Williams does not fill a critical need at #1 either. Maybe we can just keep trading back until we have 12 picks this year and next year that will be lower picks in each rounds that we can miss on and we can guarantee sucking for the next decade!! I mean ultimately isn’t that what is on the Winston haters agendas? You guys hate L&L as well, so why not pass on a franchise QB so we can have yet another coaching and GM change in a year or two and the never ending cycle will continue. But, hey at least we won’t have a liar, rapist and thief as our star franchise QB, right homers?

  77. Bogeyking Says:

    Draft Winston, continue to suck

  78. BuccaneEric Says:

I’ve been for Winston, but I think coming clean on the crab leg story, if it’s true, is the worst thing he could have done. Now all of the people who think it was not a hookup think he’s lying about it to save his a$$, and all of the people who thought it was a hookup and defended him for taking the fall can be made to look like fools. The reports are that NFL teams believed his story, but most of them probably already thought it was a hookup anyway and might have still thought it even if he told them he stole them. Now NFL teams might be wondering witch story is really true. In my opinion he should have just stuck to the first story. I don’t know witch one is true but I know I still want his name called first next week regardless. GO BUCS!!!

  79. Broy34WontArgueWithStupidity Says:

To think of how the franchise immediately becomes a sports center relevant team the moment they call out his name we go from laughingstock of to envy of the NFL along with the colts considering those two teams WILL have the top 2 under 25 qbs. Including Wilson

  80. BuccaneEric Says:

I dont know if I would say teams would envy us, but I know that amongst NFL fans we will be the most hated team in sports. Embrace it!!! 7 more days of being laughed at, 15 years(i hope) of being hated worse than the Patriots!!

  81. MarshallU Says:

    Broy34

If the Bucs do make the horrible mistake of drafting Winston, they will go from being a laughing stock to being an even bigger laughing stock.

  82. Smart Says:

Sorry Bud, but Winston couldn’t carry Luck’s Jock. He may try to steal it though. Winston stinks worse than yesterday’s fish

I also picked the Colts to go to the SB last season, that’s how much I like Luck.”

Level 10 exaggeration much? How about we start with him beating the odds and staying out of trouble and not being a bust on the field. Then you can start making comparisons to NFL elite quarterbacks.

  84. TpaBayFlyFisher Says:

When JW throws 1.5 picks per game and the Bucs are losing more than any other team in the NFL I am going to be laughing at you guys…………….

Joe, did Mike Freeman’s mole specifically say teams want to trade up for Winston, or are you assuming this? There are some other pretty good players in this draft worthy of the #1 pick after all, so I was curious?

You have no idea how stupid you are do you?

  86. ToesOnTheLine! Says:

Apparently not, but thankfully there’s even dumber posters such as yourself here to help make me feel a little smarter than I actually am. Thanks and keep posting loggedontostay, I need someone to take the heat off me for most stupid poster.
