The Brees-To-Bucs Rumors

March 11th, 2015

SaintsBreesDec2014

Chatter out of New Orleans claims Step 2 of the Saints dumping of superstars is a plan to send Drew Brees to the Buccaneers for the No. 1 overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft.

Brees is 36 years old and led the NFL last year in completions and passing yards. Sure, he seemed to take a step back from his prior greatness, but he’s still a great quarterback and leader. Brees has missed just two starts in the past 11 seasons.

It’s been noted that the Saints met with Jameis Winston at the NFL Scouting Combine.

If the chatter is true, would the Bucs be interested in dealing?

Frankly, Joe thinks Team Glazer and Team Lovie should at least listen to the Saints, especially in the down NFC South. Snagging Brees — and a couple of draft picks — now likely means strong quarterback play for three more years and three years of contending Bucs teams. A draft pick is a gamble, a worthy gamble on its own.

It doesn’t hurt to listen.

NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO !

  2. ctord Says:

sign me up for this. vjax and evans and brees WOW!!!

  3. Ben Says:

No way! The guy is THIRTY SIX and we’ve got the opportunity to get a true superstar QB. If the trade was both their firsts (inc the one from Seattle) AND Brees for #1, I’d be interested.

  4. robert 9 Says:

hell yeah baby, but don’t give em the cannon. he’s the QB of the future.

would love for JW to be throwing us int’s all day long!

  5. 87ForJameisNOMariota Says:

    Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

Don’t sign me up for just 3 years of maybe….

  6. tmaxcon Says:

This would be a horrible move on so many levels. First, you are going to trade the opportunity to take a franchise QB that will play 10 to 15 years for a guy who has 1 maybe 2 years left. Stupid!!!! Second, anyway you look at it at 36 it’s a much greater risk that an injury or complete meltdown of Brees in the first year which means just like the Revis deal we gave away a first round not only a first round but first overall pick for a player that plays a year or less. again stupid. I totally can see idiot lovie doing it though. It’s right up his alley on how to destroy a young team. I think Chip Kelly and Lovie are on a mission to see who can set back a franchise further by being stubborn fools. It’s too close to call now.

Glazers wake up and get rid of that fool.

  7. robert 9 Says:

they won’t be dealing us any pick ladies. much less 2 1st rounders.

  8. JH Says:

lol this is probably the most ridiculous football rumor I’ve heard in a long time.

  9. The Buc Realist Says:

Joe you are the absolute worse at QB assessment! Brees would be on IR by week 5, then would retire, because it is not worth it playing in the Den of Depression!!!

  10. Dreambig Says:

Wow, would that suck! Brees is way too old to take the a*s woopin that our Oline will provide. Four years from now Winston will be in his prime, Brees will be waiting out his 5 years before Possible HOF nominations.

  11. bucco brice Says:

yeah, if brees + picks for #1 overall … GET ER DONE!!

  12. k1ngfish1 Says:

For a team willing to trade their star QB inside their own division something doesn’t smell right.

  13. passthebuc Says:

Great idea. With our offensive line, Brees would be out cold by the 2nd quarter of the first game.

Lets see, we need to think about upgrading our QB, who would be dumb enough to take
Brees, his salary and give up the number one pick overall.

No problem, the Buc’s have the number one over all and they are likely to fall for anything.

  14. Warthog Says:

Saint won’t move Brees to a division rival. The man is a god in New Orleans. First time he beat them at home the city would be laid to waste by enraged Aints fans.

  15. 87ForJameisNOMariota Says:

JH…I was just thinking the same thing. This is nonsense and it’s not going to happen.

  16. Dean Says:

It depends what you want and what you believe. At 36, Drew is one of the top QB’s for maybe 3 years. Then you are back at square one.

If you stick to your guns and pick Winston, then you are set with a top QB for the next 12 years or so.

    1. Do you believe Winston can be that good?

    2. Has Brees got 3 good years left? He looked really shaky last year.

    3. Will another top flight QB come along in the next 3 years to draft and develop?

I’d say stay with Winston and ride that roller coaster into the playoffs in a couple of years.

  17. 87ForJameisNOMariota Says:

Have any of you Brees wanters taken a look at his salary?

  18. robert 9 Says:

brees, much like manning and brady will make most any oline look good. the guy can read defenses, and adjust, thereby eliminating those jailbreak situations for the most part.

    get-r-done….

all day everyday, and then get a young guy to groom if they trade glennon.

either way, it’s much less of a gamble than drafting JW, accused rapist.

still think they’ll trade the pick to philly though.

  19. 87ForJameisNOMariota Says:

Jameis Winston just got through meeting with the NFL commish. Not being pulled into a meeting with the commish, but he himself set up the meeting to clear the air with the NFL.

    Smart kid.

  20. MariotaOrWinstonOrWalkdaPlank Says:

Now you wanna talk about bad trade? This would be one of the worst trades since the Herschel Walker deal. Brees is a total D-bag and a hypocrite. Not only is it questionable that he has 3 good years left in him, but would he even WANT to play for this team? Behind THIS offensive line? What’s to stop him from retiring after 1 season?

Oh yeah and Winston, imagine having to go up against him twice a year for the next decade or so. That’s a lose/lose situation.

  21. gotbbucs Says:

Once great old qb’s being moved late in their careers never works out for the team getting them. Peyton Manning is the exception to the rule. This is a horrible idea.

  22. David Says:

Wouldn’t mind seeing Brees in Tampa…but not for our number 1 pick.

  23. DepressedbucsfaN Says:

Enticing ……… But no!!!! He would be the short term goal. If they were asking for a first round pick 2016 Then I would be okay with it. It would give winston a TRUE VETERAN QUARTERBACK to mentor him and show him the ropes. I know one could dream right. Lol

  24. 87ForJameisNOMariota Says:

Oh and they were impressed with the kid at the NFL offices, just as they were at One Buc.

This kid is coming to Tampa. He’s doing all the right things.

  25. Nybucsfan Says:

Would take home over Shameis but he is 36 maybe a second but not a first. He could retire any day.

  26. The original "Kevin" Says:

NOOOOO….SCREW THAT THE SAINTS ARE DOWN NOW LETS KICK EM!!!WE DONT NEED HIM.

  27. mike n Says:

I would take it if like you say we would get a few picks in return. I’d give of the #1 pick if we got a few picks in return.

  28. bucs4lyfe Says:

I HATE THE SAINTS TOO MUCH TO BE OK WITH THIS!!!!!!!!

what the hell is going on when key guys go from team to team within a division? role players and special teams guys whatever but the quarterback of a franchise going to another team within the division come on lovie say it ain’t so you gotta be smarter than that

  29. MariotaOrWinstonOrWalkdaPlank Says:

87 I think you’re confusing this with a Winston article.

  30. p'cola buc Says:

Brees, an aging quarterback, in an obvious decline in exchange for a young talent, Winston, half his age who will play for the next 10-15 years. Even throwing in two draft picks, absolutely not worth it. Can the Bucs think of any more ways to waste precious opportunities, ruin the future of the franchise and alienate the fan base?

  31. 87ForJameisNOMariota Says:

Nope it has Winston IN the article….

  32. Bobby M. Says:

Drew Brees comes from a spread offense in college…he’s going to be terrible.

  33. 87ForJameisNOMariota Says:

p’cola buc …it’s only a rumor. This is not going to happen despite how much some people want it to.

  34. bucs4lyfe Says:

lol we’ll be looking for another quarterback in a couple years which is basically the same as drafting a bust for a quarterback….this franchise will never get it right because they are too scary to take chances in the draft. that’s what the bucs do, we’ve traded away more quarterbacks that have won superbowls than most teams have had superbowl appearances

  35. ToesOnTheLine! Says:

Huh…what….Brees? I’d imagine there would be riots in NO if they dumped Graham and Brees in 48 hrs. Gonna have to call BS on this, but it has been a crazy FA so far…never know I guess?

  36. Bama Rich Says:

Take Brees and the Saints 2 No. 1s and trade them to the Titans for the no. 2 overall then take Mariota or Leonard Williams. Otherwise keep the no. 1 overall pick.

  37. Dylan Says:

So if the saints are willing to trade brees for one of these 2 QBs… why would the bucs say yes and play against this QB for a decade to come and potentially get robbed.. i would pass.

  38. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

87 hit the nail on the head. Salary. That’s what makes this deal nothing more than rumor.

However, just to play devils advocate, saying our oline sucks too bad doesn’t wash, because we would get Brees and their 2 first round picks, so we could shore up the line as well.

And to say Brees is washed up? More bull. Tampa fans said the same thing when he hit free agency before the Saints signed him. I wanted him then and was laughed at.

No, he would not be a long term solution, but he would buy us time to find one. And there are two quarterbacks in the draft that show promise outside of Winston and Mariota. We could always take one of them.

    But, again, not gonna happen.

  39. sethb22 Says:

Do it for a 2nd Rounder and still draft Jameis… Let him learn under one of the best.

  40. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

    tmaxcon Says
“Glazers wake up and get rid of that fool.”

Stop acting like Lovie is planning this. It’s nothing more than fan and media sensationalism.

  41. MariotaOrWinstonOrWalkdaPlank Says:

You know I’m pretty sure every other QB prospect in this draft can “do all the right things” too. You think Mariota will leave One Buc without impressing the staff?? I would be happy with Winston too but DAMN!

  42. OB Says:

Lets see did NO win our division with Graham on the team, No. Did NO have a winning record, No. Will any QB escape injury with our present OL, No. Forget Lovie are the Glazers that stupid, No. Is the next two Joe rumors going to be the trade for Payton Manning and the Brady, Yes. He has to do something until the draft day besides tout Winston because he maybe losing watchers over that.

Calm down Joe, have a cold one, we always will love you.

  43. Wausa Says:

Wow! We have some fans that are not bright regarding roster moves for the Bucs.

If the Saints gave us their 2 firsts this year, their 1st and second next year and Drew Brees the answer should still be ‘NO WAY’.

Hopefully we do not have the first overall pick for a very long time after this year. Jameis has the opportunity to turn around the franchise and make us a playoff contender for the next 10 years. Brees may retire after this upcoming season.
The Bucs should of course listen to anything another team offers, but the Bucs should do what everyone expects them to do which is turn in the card reflecting Jameis Winston as their 1st round selection.

  44. MariotaOrWinstonOrWalkdaPlank Says:

Brees threw 6 picks to the Bucs defense this season.

Think about that. 6 INTERCEPTIONS………..TO THE BUCS DEFENSE!

If we had a halfway decent, remotely respectable offense the Saints would’ve found themselves swept.

  45. The Real Malloy Says:

Brees is 147 years old AND he’s a whiny little bit$h. I’ve been pounding the table for Mariota since day 1 and I would rather have Jameis than Brees. Don’t do it L&L!

  46. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

btw, the Saints could just as easily move to #2 and get a QB.

  47. LargoSamIM Says:

Drew Brees comes from a spread offense in college…he’s going to be terrible.

    ************************************************************

I love it Bobby ! Made my day !!!

    P.S. I like Mariota too !

  48. Jacko101 Says:

    Don’t forget Payton loves Glennon

  49. Jeagan1999 Says:

Joe, I posted on this during yesterday’s open thread. Right after the Jimmy Graham deal went down, I also started hearing “whispers” about Brees to Tampa. It makes sense on a lot of levels.

The Saints were in salary cap hell (nearly $4 mil over the cap and with over $15 mil in dead money), shipping Graham saves them some money, but not as much as you’d think. If they want to add players during Free Agency, they need to shed more payroll. It’s also been rumored that Sean Payton and the Saints covet Jameis Winston and want to get younger. With the Graham trade, the Saints now have 2 first round picks (#13 and #31).

On the other hand is the Bucs. The story goes that Lovie NEEDS to win now, and that a veteran QB of Brees’s stature would by him time for a few years ( I think most believe that Brees has at least 2-3 more good years in him) to show he can field a winning team. The BUCS are also one of the only teams with enough cap space to absorb Brees’s salary (although if this trade happens, look for Tampa to rework Brees salary on a 3-4 year deal). The two first round picks the Saints would give up, would give the Bucs ammo to shore up the offensive line…and they could draft a guy like Bryce Petty in a later round. It is kind of exciting to think of Brees throwing to Jackson and Evans. If this happens, they may even go after Demarco Murray too.

I also would listen to New Orlaens on this. In today’s win or you’re out of a job NFL, I don’t think that Lovie can turn down a deal like this.

  50. Dylan Says:

Brees also plays terrible on the road and not inside of domes lol…..

  51. Alex lee Says:

Are you CRAZY. Is Drew going to get us to Super Bowl in next two years… NO!!!! Why give up future.

  52. Edgewalker Says:

    Nope.

  53. Josh P Says:

Only way they pull this trigger is if we get NO #13 also. TB can’t afford to lose a top pick. This isn’t happening.

  54. JFat Says:

26.4 Million reasons this trade won’t happen. We do this and we’re basically at the cap once you figure in rookie contracts.

  55. MadMax Says:

    Nothing to see here…..Wont happen!!!!

  56. bucrightoff Says:

Absolutely worth listening to if it’s Brees, #12 and #31. Draft a QB later on to develop under Brees (like say Petty….). Neither QB here is a sure thing, both lots of risk. Brees is still a top 10 and borderline top 5 QB. He’d instantly become the best Bucs QB ever. Gotta listen, doesn’t mean you have to trade, but you gotta listen.

And remember, Lovie is in win now mode. Getting Brees with the NFC South as is would make the Bucs the favourites. Lovie might not be able to ignore that.

  57. 87ForJameisNOMariota Says:

Murray and Brees make absolutely no sense…without an o-line. Nope this won’t happen…

  58. Jonny 2.3 Says:

Is there a Daniel Bryan chant for “NO, NO, NO” ?

  59. bucs4lyfe Says:

hopefully nothing to see here…..but as long as the number 1 overall pick is not in play then whatever

  60. dave Says:

lets do it!!! hell yes. sort of like when peyton came out of indy. people saying oh his neck and hes too old. except brees doesnt have an injury ? if we signed peyton then we wouldve had 3-5 years of being in the playoffs. its going to be the same where brees goes. i like winston but if we have the opportunity to get him out of nola, and bring him here you do it. its about winning the nfc south and brees is the best qb in it and hes been playing against each team for years.

  61. Josh P Says:

    @LargoSam & Bobby

He also threw 45 INT at Purdue also. I guess QB’s with high INT in college can translate into Elite QB’s in the NFL.

  62. DEEnice07 Says:

If they get 2 1st round draft picks (Seattle) (New Orleans) and maybe trade back up in the draft for Mariota? And sit him behind Brees for 3 years..that could work.. I love Jameis though!

  63. dave Says:

id love winston but the thing is we’ll have brees for about 3- 5 years, you can find a qb by that time to groom behind brees, which is what your supposed to do to build solid qb play for a franchise. there will be other talented qbs in each draft that are all possibilities of being good. at least well all see twice a year is just about as good as it gets

  64. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

I have to say though…if they would do it for our second round pick, and if they paid half his salary…that might be worth it. We could still draft Mariota (both were spread QBs), Brees could mentor him, and the thought of Brees helping us beat the Saints twice a year, and them paying him to do it…that brings a smile.

  65. Tyson Says:

If saints offer one of their first round picks with a 2nd for next year, we should take, and I know ppl will say saints haven’t offered any picks, but who has the leverage, the Bucs do because we have what they want. Only bad thing is with contract, that’s alot to try and handle and still be able to sign other players. You would not just be getting a qb but also getting a nentor, yes someone that Brees would be grooming. Let’s atleast hear what the saints have to say, counter what they offer and go from there.

  66. Josh P Says:

    @DEEnice07

Agreed. This is the only way they make this trade. Have to get back more than just Breed.

  67. LUVMYBUCS Says:

I could see the Jets trading for Brees.

  68. dave Says:

why are you people so worried about brees contract. everyone was so willing to pay suh this outrageous amount of money and hes a dt which we already have one of the best in the league. guys havent we learned after all these years, if your going to overpay on any position have it be qb. a qb of that caliber immediately changes your team, no if ands buts about it.

  69. Waterboy Says:

Bahahahahaha thanks for the good laugh Joe I needed that this morning!

  70. Jeagan1999 Says:

DEEnice07….I’m with you. The values of the 2 Saints first round picks is 1750 points…equivalent to the 5-6 overall pick. The Bucs could make the trade to get Brees and still try to trade up to get Mariota! What a chance for a young QB to learn from a future hall of fame guy!

  71. Rob Says:

This is the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard of. Let’s let the Saints have a blue-chip #1 overall pick type guy in trade for a 36 year old on his way out of the league.

That’s the quickest way to guarantee that the Bucs remain in the cellar and the Saints reload quickly.

    It had better be b.s.

  72. DallasBuc Says:

We should have been in the Brees sweepstakes 10 years ago when all we had was snotty-nosed Chris Simms. A little late late Bucs fans, especially if it means giving up our chance at Winston. Maybe 2016 1st but not 2015.

  73. Brian D Says:

I do not like that deal at all. brees is great but at his age he is only a band aid and Jameis could be a long term solution. When you have the number one pic and there is a franchise calibur qb available you have to take him.

  74. bucs4lyfe Says:

tom brady at his age isn’t work the number 1 overall pick for a team like that bucs, jags or raiders….come on joe you could have waited for something more concrete than chatter for something of this magnitude, it would be the worst move in the history of the league, this guy has like 2 average years left. glad it’s only chatter coming out of new Orleans meaning they may be trying to drum up trade value for brees

  75. 87ForJameisNOMariota Says:

The 49ers got the 18th pick in the draft for Montana from the Chiefs back in the day…for Joe Montana 4 time SB winner.

We better NOT give up our first for Brees…

  76. JMN Says:

Sure for the short term this makes sense. But it is better to gamble on getting a franchise QB that can be great for the next 10 years for the organization. Besides, I don’t think Brees can take the beating that McCown took last year.

  77. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @ Bonzai

They can’t absorb some of his salary…this is the NFL not MLB…

Also who do they want at #1….why not trade with Tenn & take the QB available there….they must have a strong favorite or believe the Bucs will pick him. I just don’t think they would get rid of Brees for Winston.

  78. Gus Says:

If they willing to take a second or third……..maybe

  79. LargoSamIM Says:

    @Josh P:

another good point ! That’s why drafting ANY QB @#1 is a crapshoot !

    P.S. I like Winston, too !

  80. bucrightoff Says:

Trading for Brees and drafting Winston is not possible. Winston will simply threaten to play baseball and that’s that. Winston is not going somewhere to sit for 3 years (as if you’d want to trust him to do that anyways)

  81. danati74 Says:

I would burn all my memorabilia and just support NCAA football. This would be too much. If this is true, not only is Florida the place for anyone to retire, but for NFL vets to retire. Come on and build something L&L. Jees

  82. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Let the Saints suffer for a while in “Cap Hell”…..

  83. BucsFanInChina Says:

    Think about it this way…
Drew Brees, and maybe a couple years of winning
    *OR*
Jaboo and a freshly resigned (and financially motivated) Lavonte David

Never hurts to listen, but damn, the Saints better be willing to put up the farm on this one.

  84. 87ForJameisNOMariota Says:

Btw I’ve grown to hate Brees.

  85. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Imagine how the Saint’s fanbase is reacting……getting rid of Graham and now talking about Brees….

  86. MariotaOrWinstonOrWalkdaPlank Says:

Finally something we agree on 87. Brees is a hyproctical “I can do no wrong” type of guy.

  87. BucTrooper Says:

I’ll take Brees, the Saints’ 2 #1s this year, and the number 1 & 2 NEXT year for the #1 pick this year.

Ask for the moon. If they turn you down, well, go talk to someone else with the #1 pick in the 2015 draft.

  88. 87ForJameisNOMariota Says:

Brees is a whiny bitch like Brady.

  89. bucgatr 71 Says:

Brees would retire first. And I only won 84 dollars last night. I have a cold and Im not going to work today. I am going to sit in here and ……………..talk all day

  90. Atlanta Buc Says:

Heeelll Noooo!! Saints trying to dump salary and rebuild through draft, which is smart at this point for them. I’ve heard they are also high on Chase Daniel, Bree’s backup, so it does make sense to cut bait while Brees has some value and float the offer. Saints could also pitch this deal to Tennessee at the #2 position for Mariotta; makes more sense for them to do the deal. All the best teams know when to fold em and get the best new hand they can in the draft! Hopefully the Bucs don’t bite on this one. Now maybe for our #2 pick, but I don’t like paying Brees’s salary where it is, Saints would have to bite a little of it off to make the deal more palatable. Still not sure we should even trade our #2 given all of our other needs. Draft picks too valuable these days due to the 4 year cap savings on rookie deals.

  91. bucgatr 71 Says:

Hey TBBF……..since Im gonna be here all day I would like to know what Pablo thinks.

  92. Phillip Says:

For those saying it’s not possible… It’s ENTIRELY possible for this deal to happen.. They are in cap hell with continuously pushing cap hits into the future even with the JG trade. They also probably know that the team that was assembled before the JG trade is not good enough to win the SB. The bust potential for BOTH top QB’s in this class is extremely high as well. L&L want to WIN this year and probably can’t go through another 2-5 win season and expect to keep their jobs, Brees will get them the wins they are looking for. Top QB’s make an O-line look better than it really is as well.

That being said I’m not sure if I’m a fan of this deal and he clearly REGRESSED ( I DON’T care what his numbers were.. Numbers LIE, hello MG8) last season. Depends on the compensation. If we get Brees, their 1st, and a couple other picks then maybe.. I’m in the MM camp but also a fan of the trade down as we need a TON of help.

  93. David Says:

    MARIOTA!

  94. cmurda Says:

5 years ago….helll yes. Right now…. hell no.

  95. DallasBuc Says:

Offer up Glennon for Brees! See how much Payton really covets his services!

  96. Brandon Says:

Brees is worth what his contract says he is worth, no more. He is definitely not worth the #1 overall pick, not at his salary or age. End of discussion, this isn’t happening.

  97. Couch Fan Says:

It may be true that Saints are shopping DB but it would be idiotic and foolish of Lovie/Licht to take him. I would never turn my back on this team or quit being Bucs fan but a move like that would make it incredibly hard for me to watch/attend or even pay attention to the Bucs for awhile.

  98. snook Says:

Normally, I’d say there’s no way this happens. But this is the Bucs. Anything is possible.

  99. bucrightoff Says:

Why are people saying there’s no shot this happens? Lovie needs to win next year. He dug his own grave by saying fans shouldn’t be patient, then promptly going 2-14. If he goes 5-11 this year he’s fired, no two ways about it. He must win this year, drafting a rookie QB likely doesn’t help get too many wins.

Remember: He thought he could win 10 games and go to the playoffs with 35 year old Josh McCown. I bet he thinks he can win the Super Bowl with 36 year old Drew Brees. What you want to happen and what Lovie is going to do are not the same.

  100. BirdDoggers Says:

It doesn’t hurt to listen, if the rumors are true. Brees is a known commodity. He has a few years left in the tank. The draft is a crap shoot at best. If the Bucs could land Brees and draft picks to boot, it’s a win for the Bucs.

Remember, the Bucs are trying to decide between two QB prospects that both have big questions marks. Brees doesn’t come with the same uncertainty. For all we know, Brees could still be playing football at a high level while Winston and Mariota struggle.

It would be a huge surprise if Brees is traded to anyone, let alone to a division rival. Imagine if Brees is traded and the Saints replacement QB stinks up the joint. It would go down as one of the worst decisions in their history. The Saints are a contender with Brees and long as they fix their defense. I don’t see a trade happening but the NFL is quirky enough for it to happen.

  101. Cover deuce Says:

If this is Lovies bold move, I am nonplussed. This proves how shortsighted and idiotic his personnel moves are. Brees has what, maybe 3 or 4 years left? And that’s just me being optimistic. Realistically he’s got maybe 1-2 left. Why Lovie? Why? I’ll answer: to save his own hide after he roundly botched last season. Stupid stupid stupid.

  102. Love and Warrick Dunn Says:

Sure, let’s help the Saints with their cap issues, and with setting them up with a new franchise QB to menace us for the next 10-15 years.

  103. Buclover Says:

    @JOE!

Please do some damn QA on your mobile version of your site. It is beyond annoying to try to work with and it’s been like this for a few weeks. Good Lord, our team sucks- it doesn’t mean your site has to.

    Love ya still though!

  104. Tiny Tim Says:

Some of you are too funny. Why in the hell would you want a 36 yr old QB for maybe two years when you can get a potential stud for the next 12 years? How would that look? Brees will be gone after 2-3 yrs and Winston/Mariotta in 3 years will start coming into their own and we would once again be stuck without a franchise QB while having to play one of them twice a year. How would that look? Some of you are the reason why buc fans are laughed at nationally. I can’t believe Joe and some of you are really think we should even listen. I am truly amazed.

  105. Bucbob1 Says:

If Drew Brees could be acquired somehow without giving up our number 1 pick, i’m all for it. Otherwise forget it.

  106. Babaloo Says:

And what if he decides he wants to retire ?

  107. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    Speaking for Pablo

“Pablo is getting dizzy with all this FA stuff. Pablo has trouble enough following the facts much less rumors. Pablo liked it better when all we talked about was one subject….how good or how bad Jameis Winston is. Pablo only has interest when Pablo’s hombres are in the news…and the Bucs are racist when it comes to Pablo’s hombres. Wisniewski, what kind of f*ckin’ name is that? Pablo is offended”

  108. BirdDoggers Says:

Another factor is the production Brees has had in Payton’s offense. Brees would most likely be able to play at a high level in Koetter’s offense, but there could be some lost production.

  109. Bucbob1 Says:

In a few years if the Bucs are able to build a playoff contender, Brees will be too old to play.

  110. ElioT Says:

    No f**king way!!!!!!!!!!!

Sick and tired of losing picks for old players with 2-3 years left.

It’s time to suck it up and start developing our own players.

    Go Sucs!!!

  111. Barry Says:

If Winston and/or Mariota aren’t really franchise QB grade then why not.

  112. anthony55 Says:

Noooooooooooooo freaking way a 36 year old qb who is owed 18 million for 21 year old future super star absolute insane crazy no no no no no does not make any sense whatsoever

  113. Tiny Tim Says:

Didn’t the Colts cut an aging 36 year old legend at QB when they had the number one pick because it was in the best interest of the team long term? Yet there are some buc fans that thinks its a good move or we should listen to the idea of trading a #1 pick for a aging 36 year old legend QB. Unbelievable Joe and some of you are. I am truly amazed at some of you.

  114. foghead407 Says:

That would.be an stupid idiotic trade..an old.washed up.brees who.has maybe 2 years left for a qb that could be great for ten fifteen years. I.didnt suffer last year and get the first pick to WASTE it on an old man who is bassically done. Brees for a 2nd or 3rd then.maybe

  115. JFF Says:

    wow, just wow. W

  116. Bucbob1 Says:

Whats next? Tom Brady to the Buccaneers for our number one pick? I wouldn’t be surprised if that rumor surfaced later today.

  117. pick6 Says:

this would be a great trade! gruden and brees would dominate the league!!! oh wait, what’s that you said? it’s 2015, not 2008? oh, nevermind then

  118. Jman Says:

Joe it’s probably A threat to get Brees to rework his contract and take a pay cut

  119. Lord Cornelius Says:

Adam Schefter said that he wouldn’t even call this rumor or speculation; rather just “rediculous”

I’m not going to waste much thought on this

  120. Bucs55 Says:

Thats excatly what it is potential on winston n mariota they havent played a down in the nfl no one know what they will be people need to stop makin it seem like they are already superstars in the next level…

  121. CalBucsFan Says:

    Stupid is as stupid does.

  122. Eric Says:

I’m sure Sean Payton would love to get Winston.

Sorry Sean, Jameis is ours. Good luck against him for the next 10-15 years.

The times they are a-changing, starting April 30th.

brees, much like manning and brady will make most any oline look good. the guy can read defenses, and adjust, thereby eliminating those jailbreak situations for the most part.

    get-r-done….

all day everyday, and then get a young guy to groom if they trade glennon.

either way, it’s much less of a gamble than drafting JW, accused rapist.

still think they’ll trade the pick to philly though.

    ———–

It’s not suprising that only the fans with the least amount of NFL intellect would be for this.

  124. LargoBuc Says:

No way. You dont trade a HOF QB to a division rival just to clear cap space. No way.
However, having Brees in here for a year or two could really be great for the development of Mike Glennon.

  125. Cannon Fire Says:

Joe is trolling each and every one of you

Sir, this “trolling” stuff is silly. Joe could troll every day of the week with rumors and gossip, etc. Joe doesn’t do that. He simply shared chatter buzzing up sports radio in two cities, and linked to the publication that seems to have started the chatter. It’s interesting, therefore Joe shared it. Nothing more than that. –Joe

  126. Johnny Dejay Says:

Oh, no! This would be the worst move in Buccaneer Franchise history, and that’s saying something, because this franchise has had some whopping mistakes…

  127. 98PickJameis Says:

We are at the point in our teams building process where al we really need is a stable MLB that can cover for Lovie, some quality Olinemen at LT and RG and a young franchise QB for the next 10-15 years to take us all the way. Getting Drew Brees would take us at best to the divisional round of the playoffs before finally retiring. I love how good Drew Brees is but our team isn’t ready and fully built yet for only 3 years of a good QB. I would be intrigued if Brees was only 30 or something like that but he’s almost as old as manning and Brady. We just need to stick to the plan and get Jameis who will help us compete for the next 10-15 years.

  128. StPeteBucsFan Says:

Could we bring a dose of reality back to our discussions. I prefer Mariota but will certainly be happy with Fameis and as for Brees I simply have difficulty imagining that would happen unless he too is a cap casualty.

Brees is not a physical QB and he could have 4 or 5 years left. He’s a workout demon who stays in tremendous physical shape year round. Like Brady he plans on playing.

I’m like Joe. I listen to the “deal” if there is actually one on the table.

But could we clear up one thing. Fameis and Marcus are NOT great NFL QB’s.
They are great college QB’s!!! A huge difference!

Brees is a Super Bowl winning pro bowl NFL QB. Neither Fameis nor Marcus can claim even being an NFL QB. Odds are 50-50 against them panning out.

I’m not saying that Fameis or Marcus can’t become great. I simply stating that’s still an IF with BOTH of these players. It’s not an if with Drew Brees.

Gawd do I need to link to Aretha Franklin’s R E S P E C T? I’ve been astounded with how posters who support both QB’s are so ready to anoint them as great before they’ve even played the first play.

The odds of either Fameis or Marcus duplicating Brees career are actually pretty long. Not that they won’t but let’s not crown them or compare them to GREAT players before they’ve even suited up.

  129. Another J Says:

That would be the dumbest thing EVER!
Back in 2006 when Brees was cut by the Chargers there were only 2 teams willing to take a chance on signing him, The Dolphins, and The Bucs unfortunately neither team took a chance on him because of his shoulder injury. In hindsight perhaps we should have taken the chance, but Now it’s 2015, and Drew Brees is 36 years old, There’s no way he’s worth the salary cap hit, or the #1 pick in the draft at this stage in his career.

  130. ChessMaster Says:

In Chess when you trade, the key concern is not always the value of the pieces being exchanged, but what’s left on the board. – Dan Heisman

  131. bucgatr 71 Says:

FINALLY Pablo chimes in with some words of wisdom!!

  132. Frankiebuc Says:

You can draft a QB in 2nd or 3rd round and have then sit a few seasons under Brees. If the deal is Brees, #13, #31, & maybe a second rounder, that would be a great deal.

  133. StPeteBucsFan Says:

“There’s no way he’s worth the salary cap hit, or the #1 pick in the draft at this stage in his career.”

Disagree completely about the cap hit. Joe and most folks here have been banging the drum about the desperate need for a REAL NFL QB. Brees is that and REAL NFL QB’s cost money.

Neither Fameis nor Marcus are REAL NFL QB’s. Both show lots of potential but that’s all. They are NOT genuine NFL QB’s yet…Brees obviously is.

As for the trade value? I’m unclear about the proposed deal. If we are simply swapping first round picks I doubt that I’d go for it. But if NO sweetened the pot considerabley with some additional picks I’d have to at least consider the offer.

I suspect that both L&L do not feel we are as far away from success as most of our posters. If they think we can be competitive next year then they’ll listen to N.O. If they think we are as far behind as most of the posters then Brees probably doesn’t make sense.

  134. John Says:

I wouldn’t make the trade. He is at the end of his career. Then you allow Winston to stay in your division. Hell no!

  135. Buccfan37 Says:

Count me in the HELL NO crowd!

  136. robert 9 Says:

buc4lyfe and brandon and others SCREAMING brees aint worth the #1 pick, brady aint worth the #1 pick, other saying they would never deal him to a division rival.

    but I don’t know football.

    YOU’RE ALL FRIGGIN MORONS.

GB dealt Favre to MN and he took them to the playoffs, Manning wen to an AFC team, the Broncos and they have been in the playoffs each year.

THE GAMBLE IS THE NUMBER ONE PICK, AND WHEN IT’S A GUY WITH SO MANY ISSUES LIKE JW, WELL THAT LIKE PLAYING THE ROULETTE WHEEL!

all these QB’s are a hell of a lot less risk. even if they only have a limited shelf life. pick the right guy for him to mentor and this could make a hell of a lot of senses. take your hatred for the saints and your love for JW out of this and look at it objectively.

  137. nate Says:

Joe sure got ever1 all crazy on this 1…. it wont happen mYbe for our 2nd round pick but notnumber 1

  138. Phil Says:

There is no player I hate more than Dree Brees. If the trade for him and give anything more than a 6th round pick I will be done with the Bucs.

  139. buddha Says:

Brees is 10 times the quarterback that Winston ever will be. Would be a great deal for the Buccaneers. Besides, you’ll be able to get Winston as a free agent for peanuts in three or four years–if he is not in jail, which given the past is more likely than his becoming a franchise quarterback.

  140. LUVMYBUCS Says:

  141. bucgatr 71 Says:

Well, Hey, if Vincent Jackson approves then Im all in.

  142. Clint Says:

Disappointed to hear you say this Joe.

  143. Mark Says:

So, to summarize: a division opponent is willing to trade their 36 year-old quarterback and possibly both number ones for what we already have, and then use it to draft the QB most scouts believe will be a 10-15 year fixture in the league and that most pundits believe the Bucs will take. The only possible reasons for NO doing this is because they’re being forced to free up cap space (doubtful), or because they think we’d be dumb enough to do it. When it comes to decisions like this, which braintrust do you think has a leg up?

  144. ToesOnTheLine! Says:

One good thing if the trade rumors have any truth…no more JBF articles about the Bucs having the worst QB in the NFC South. That’s almost worth it right there.

  145. BoltIsle Says:

If this team was close, I’d want 2016 1&2 to even consider. Especially to a division rival.
Since we’re nowhere near what we were in 2001 when we traded for Chucky, draft a QB and let Brees’ contract continue to squeeze them on the cap. More to lose by making that trade.

  146. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    @bucgatr 71

    Lol, Of course he would

  147. Lion Says:

Talk about one of the worst ideas I’ve ever heard and appalled Joe would even suggest such a horrible idea. Sure let’s send 21 year old Jameis to a division rival and take on their aging and declining 36 year old quarterback. Talk about setting your franchise back, this right here would be the exact way to do it.

To even suggest something as stupid as this you would either have to be a Saints fan or not very smart. Yeah, sure, let’s ensure that Jameis gets shipped to a division rival and at the same time assure us of a quarterback at the end of his career. Great idea… NOT!

  148. iamkingsu Says:

If this ain’t the dumbest s(h)it I’ve ever heard. The man is 36 years old it’s no where but down from here

  149. robert 9 Says:

you guys do realize 90% of people are wrong right?

if not for that there would not be the top % earners and the rest of the herd.

    carry on herd.

  150. Maze Says:

Yeah right. This team is so lost

  151. Buctebow Says:

No thank you to Brees. Now, I might have more belief that they could trade for Cutler, but not for the #1 pick and that is highly, highly doubtful as well.

  152. Buctebow Says:

Ok, now where is the Tebow rumor when you need one?

  153. IamTheOne Says:

  154. Buccfan305 Says:

Who in there right F’ing mind. Gives up a 1st over all pick for a 36 year old QB….that is just plan F’ing stupid!!!!

  155. Clint Says:

My buddy in New Orleans says no way the Saints trade Brees within the division. I believe this to be the case.

  156. Lion Says:

You got that way backwards Clint. There is no way Bucs trade Winston inside the division. Taints would trade Brees for Winston in heart beat and rightly so, but the Bucs brass isn’t that stupid.

  157. mark2001 Says:

The only way I would do is for their first and second round pick thrown in too.

He is way too old, and a couple of years is the most we would see from him, particularly with our line.

We trade straight up, and NO gets the steal of the decade.

  158. Mr Magoo Says:

I heard a rumor that Joe Montana wants to suit up for the Bucs. He will cost us a first round wheel chair and two bottles of Geritol.

  159. Matt B Says:

Somebody in one of the comments above said the Saints would never trade Brees because he is s God in New Orleans. I have to disagree. I went to our game in NOLA last year and the Saints fans were really down on him. They said his arm strength was gone, underthrowing deep balls and such and throwing some bad picks too. I watched him in that game and others on TV and I understood where they were coming from.
