Jameis Winston = Philip Rivers?

March 29th, 2015

philip rivers

For reasons Joe doesn’t quite understand, All-Pro Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers is suddenly making noise because he doesn’t want to uproot his family in the expected San Diego franchise relocation to Lipstick City.

Well, if Rivers is traded, wouldn’t he have to uproot his family anyway? Perhaps to lesser places to live? Los Angeles may not be Shangri-La, but it sure beats living in, say, Chicago. So Joe is dubious of the Bucs ever getting Rivers.

Would Joe jump at he chance to acquire Rivers? Does Joe like cold beer? Of course.

Getting Rivers is a different animal. However, the Bucs may just get Rivers, in so many words, come April 30. That’s because Daniel Jeremiah of NFL Network believes Jameis Winston is the next Rivers, documents Bryan Fischer of NFL.com.

“I’ve compared him to Ben Roethlisberger before, but the more I think about it, another name comes to mind, and that is Philip Rivers,” Jeremiah said on NFL Network’s “Path to the Draft.” “The guys have unorthodox deliveries, guys that are not shy and like to talk a little bit and have that confidence. I think they’re similar football players, and Jameis Winston could have a career, at his best, like Philip Rivers.”

Jeremiah is on to something when it comes to Winston and Rivers’ moxie and ability to win football games, and given the Bucs’ QB woes in recent years, the team’s front office would surely love to draft a player who could play at Rivers’ level in the NFL.

Seriously, if the Bucs could get Rivers, fans would do cartwheels down Kennedy Blvd. So would Joe, though that might be a bigger trick than actually pulling off a trade for Rivers.

And if Winston is the next Rivers, it is a slam dunk for the Bucs. A no-brainer come April 30.

Butt out, Dungy!

  1. Buddhaboy Says:

I agree Joe. Dungy is so lame. This guy, who died and left him the moral authority on everything? Plus, the only reason he won, was because he literally handed over the offense to peyton.

  2. "TheKevin" Says:

    ^^^^^^^^this loser calling Dungy lame?

What a F ing moron you are. Dungy has more knowledge than you’ll ever have.

So why don’t you just go hang yourself today and do the world a favor you scum bag.

You are a total idiot and have no right breathing my air.

Dungy is the reason this team was turned around and you come on here and say he’s lame?

My god I would strangle you right now if I could you stupid fu*k

    TheKevin,

    Good morning, sunshine! :>

  5. Joseph Mamma Says:

The absolute best he could be is Philip River’s. I’m not sure if that is all that great of a compliment.

  6. Keepitreal Says:

Dungy was a good coach and he turned the bucs around, but let’s be honest he is clueless when it comes to offence. Do not give him any weight picking QB!

  7. beeric Says:

    Pass on Rivers.

  8. Keepitreal Says:

I don’t want Rivers Joe. He has maybe 4 years. Could take that long for Bucs to be contenders. No trade!!! Take winston!!

  9. RealityCheck Says:

Yo Kevin, if you have time today, you might consider totally changing your entire outlook on life.

  10. pick6 Says:

i’ve always been a proponent of the philip rivers comparison, especially the competitive fire. everybody who wants to talk about a player getting mad at his players, coaches, and even officials on occasion needs to go back and check their thoughts on how philip rivers leads. personally i love it.

  11. Tampabaybucfan Says:

All these QB comparisons are amusing……I guess there is nothing else you can do.

Rivers, Wilson, Manning (both), Jamarcus Russell, Garard, Rothlesberger, Rogers, Brees, Brady, Kaepernick, Newton, Ryan, Romo, Bortels, Carr,Manziel, McNair….all we need to do is throw in Cris Simms, Bart Star & Johnny Unitas and things will be complete.

  12. buddhaboy Says:

“the” Kevin. How lame. Why don’t you go outside with dungy and play a nice little game of hide and go phuck yourself

  13. rayjay1122 Says:

Kevin is a prime candidate for medical marijuana. But actually he is probably too young to qualify even if he lives somewhere that it is legal since you have to be an adult. Many of us adults do not agree with one another but threats of physical violence while sitting behind a keyboard is not what adults do. SMH. #SorryNotAfraidOfBlogToughGuy

  14. Eric Says:

If jameis is as good in the pros as Rivers ill be damn happy.

  15. Patrick in VA Says:

@theKevin – it’s funny that you’re so concerned about the air you breath being polluted by someone that dares to look at the world through a lens that’s different than yours. Especially since I’m pretty sure you don’t get out of your house much so the air you’re breathing is mostly just your own recycled air. Given the amount of anti-social tendencies that you’ve got going on, I can’t imagine that there are a whole lot of human interactions that go on in your life

  16. 87LikesFreeJerseys Says:

Dungy is one of my hero’s.

  17. Decepticons Says:

Take Marriota why even bother with these losers.

Miss Winston is a problem a problem child and overrated.

    Rivers is old.

  18. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    Speaking for Pablo

“TBBF you forgot to mention Mark Sanchez & Jeff Garcia……Pablo doesn’t if either fit Winston or Mariota….but Pablo is sick and tired of the prejudice (no brown) from posters on this site. So far the only thing that is brown is 87’s nose when it comes to Joe”

  19. Seminole Bill Says:

Seminole Bill thinks Joe is right on target on the Jameis/Rivers comparison, but with the wrong conclusion. How so, you say? Well, let Seminole Bill explain. Rivers is the best QB to never have been to the show. Performing with a mediocre group around him, Rivers will never reach his potential. Jameis will be the same with the Bucs unless they get an Oline to protect him. And, so will Rivers if he comers here. Conclusion: trade down and build a defense around McCoy, our best player a la Brooks and Sapp. Acquire a serviceable QB that doesn’t make mistakes. We won a SuperBowl with that formula – it can happen again.

  20. 87LikesFreeJerseys Says:

A cross between Brett Favre and Big Ben.

    Thee end.

  21. Barry Bryan Joel all agree Says:

Comparing #TheCreepyCrab to Rivers is like comparing Satan to Jesus. Joe put all the lipstick you need to on Winston, he’s still an accused Rapist, an accused Criminal, and one of very bad character.

  22. 87LikesFreeJerseys Says:

Seminole Bill …The Bucs D that won the Super Bowl would not be allowed to play in today’s NFL with all the new rules. The game today is geared for offenses to score more points. That’s why having a good-great QB is essential.

John Lynch….hell he would be banned for life if he was still playing these days.

  23. MadMax Says:

Winston is in charge of his own path. He has the gift and can be better than Rivers.

  24. jj Says:

Winstons issues. shop lifting, rape allegations, weight and conditioning issues, still wants to play baseball, degenerative shoulder, slow as a snail, vandalisam, Very despised throughout the country. We would be lucky if he wasn’t protested at games. if he doesn’t win his first year and struggels we would see this rehashed all over tv and we would be the biggest joke in the nfl. despite his arm talent, Not a smart pic for first overall.

  25. kaput Says:

” Joe put all the lipstick you need to on Winston, he’s still an accused Rapist, an accused Criminal . . .”

    Not guilty, mind you. Accused.

    Grow up people.

  26. P'cola Buc Says:

    @ Barry Brian Joel

Apparently the dozens and dozens of people who personally know Winston and have been interviewed by many NFL coaches and staff disagree with you. Now who will intelligent people believe, these many people who know Winston or yourself who have never met the man. Anyone can accuse anyone of anything…. intelligent people will very easily see right through you.

  27. Stpetebucsfan Says:

    @TheKevin

My god I would strangle you right now if I could you stupid fu*k

Dude take your meds!!! Or learn something about life and grow up.

As Ralph Waldo Emerson said, “I do not let other people’s thoughts determine how I feel”.

Why would you give anybody else the power to agitate or vex you so dramatically, and on a freaking football blog!

I admire Tony Dungy as a human being,. I respect his football knowledge. I think however that Dungy ball is dinosaur ball. The league rules and the direction the league is heading clearly indicate that the NFL does not want teams to win with dungyball. The league wants OFFENSE. Why swim upstream?

Calm down Kevin. You fave, Father Dungy would not want you strangling people.

  28. jj Says:

looks like your not so intelligent. the only allegation is rape. what about everything else.

  29. tortured orlando bucs fan Says:

Unfortunately the nfl with the new rules is becoming horrible “basketball on grass” and at this rate, will be unwatchable in about 10 years. I guess as a “glory days” bucs fan im in the small minority that thinks a great football game has a 10-3, 14-7 scoreline, wmc in miami should be spent at pool partys featuring mark knight and eric prydz instead of dancepop like calvin harris or steve aoki, and teams have to actually fight for those hard earned 1st downs. The last 2 years (since i lost total faith in our glorious bucs in week 1 and week 2 respectively) I dont even bother turning on the games until the 2nd half unless I have nothing better to do, since that big int before halftime or 2 minute drill is not 1/8th as meaningful as it used to be!
Sorry for the rant, that being said I still hope we roll the dice with winston, then take best available de/ol and keep on doing that for 6 more rounds(unless we get a de, then all ol).
Oh well, at least I still have my other favorite franchise since childhood to root for(barcelona!) makes the fact that my that other favorite team has much much lower expectations more bareable.

  30. Buc-O's 82 Says:

Sooooooo silly to compare Shameis (the next tenant for the Orient Street Hotel) to Philip Rivers. Shameis couldn’t tote his jock.

  31. Stpetebucsfan Says:

Well said! I’m growing weary of the comparisons. Why can’t Fameis be the next Fameis an original? Same for MM. Why can’t he just be the next Marcus.

I get trying to discuss styles but we’ve gone overboard.

And what disturbs me most is the lack of respect for those who have already achieved.

I can easily imagine Fameis being better than Rivers. But he’s NOT yet. He’s a freaking prospect, Rivers is a star.

The same is true for Mariota and Aaron Rodgers. One is a prospect the other is a star.

I believe in scoreboard!!! Fameis nor Marcus have won a single NFL game. Hell they haven’t even completed a single NFL pass Everything written about them is simple speculation. Rivers and Rodgers and Wilson et all have actual stats behind them.

  32. TheDon Says:

Some tool just compared Jameis to satan. I seriously can’t beleive how many dumb people there are in this world

  33. BUC IT Says:

ok…. so here is the scenario. If a team wants to offer us (this years pick would need to be a pretty high slot) 3 first round picks and two 2nd rounders I would consider trading the pick. If that doesn’t happen. Ill take Winston and really have no interest in a old veteran QB with only a few years left.

  34. Stpetebucsfan Says:

    Don

I share your sentiments. But it’s a sports blog and hyperbole rules.

I also see this over the top exaggeration on the political blog I attend.

Sports is just entertainment, politics actually affect our lives and so it disturbs me more there.

I’m not angered by these comments however. I feel sorry for anybody who is at best so thoughtless as to compare any living human to Satan…OK some exceptions of OBL or ISIS…but a young college athlete? Really? At worst is when it’s simply a manifestation of the posters own issues of anger, fear, hostility.

  35. MadMax Says:

    @jj

“You’re” not “your”….. come on man, if you’re going to knock someone’s intelligence factor, at least have your’s in check (see that use of your?)

  36. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    @Joe

Lol, why you always got something negative to say about Chicago?

  37. Windy City Buc Says:

We can only hope that Winston turns out to be Rivers like. But since he hasn’t taken a snap in the NFL yet, I think I will wait to get my hopes up. This team has a history of screwing up when it comes to the QB position. Hopefully they get it right this time around.

  38. BoltIsle Says:

Would love to have Rivers, if he were 5 years younger and a QB were all we needed. Shame he may never even get to a Super Bowl.

Its amazing how emotionally invested in this issue some are. More a chance of some of these posters appearing in Orient Street Hotel than Jameis.

Worth picking JW just to get of some of our so called “fans”

Jameis Winston (as of today) 0 years in the league 0 Super Bowl appearances.

    Winston > Rivers

  42. drdneast Says:

I hope Winston is better than the overrated Phillip Rivers since the Chargers haven’t been to the playoffs in over three years.
In fact. the last time they played here they lost and Rivers threw a pick to of all people Leonard Johnson, the Joe Bucs blogs favorite whipping boy.
Rivers is way overrated. The AFC’s kindred spirit to Tony Romo.

  43. charactermatters Says:

At best he is Rivers? You mean the Rivers with the 4-5 playoff record in 11 years? I’ll pass.

  44. Elle Says:

Dungy has been a culture changer in Tampa. Sometimes stats don’t mean anything. This isn’t Madden, it’s real football and real football is made of men battling on the field, high-strung emotions, precarious situations and hard choices. Coach Dungy came in town and changed the “Yuccaneers” for the better, through his teachings and work ethics. He contributed to put us on the map and for that he will always have my respect. I think the man is entitled to have an opinion and comment on all things Bucs.

Excellent post, St. Pete Bucs Fan.

It is certainly possible that Jameis Winston can become as good as some of his sycophants believe, but the statistical likelihood seems quite low to me. Perhaps he will be the “savior” of the franchise, but the comparison with established stars in the league before he has played even a single down against NFL competition seems wishful thinking.

Here is my question for everyone. If picked by the Bucs, how will Jameis Winston do against his current competition?
After 13 games in the NFL, will he have 19 TDs and only 9 INTs?
After 18 and 1/4 games in the NFL, will he have 29 TDs and only 15 INTs?
How much better will he be?

Since this is a “comparison” thread, after 19 games in the NFL:
    Flacco: 20 TDs 14 INTs
    Newton: 23 TDs 22 INTs
    Ryan: 21 TDs 12 INTs
    Roethlisberger: 28 TDs 13 INTs
    Griffin: 26 TDs 9 INTs
    Vick: 18 TDs 10 INTs
    Freeman: 24 TDs 23 INTs

And Philip Rivers: 27 TDs 13 INTs
but he sat the bench for two years before starting in his third year.

    Predictions for Fameis Jameis please.

  52. Dr Feelgood Says:

    @TheKevin,

Dungy’s son hanged himself, so your choice of words is simply awful. I love Dungy but he never did win without a great QB, which he NEVER acquired while here. He really has little credibility to me when it comes to QB evaluation because he always just wanted the safe player, not leaning on the QB to win games. You really should retract the “hang yourself” comment.

  53. bucs4lyfe Says:

They really should stop with the comparisons. Big Ben didn’t look like big Ben in college, college and prep are miles apart in talent which is why they said RG3 was a can’t miss prospect, no one saying picking up a 16 mill option for a quarterback that had underachieved like that. It’s why idiots like Dominick moved up a couple of spots to draft josh Freeman. I want a quarterback that others players will be compared to coming out of the draft, I wasn’t him to be like JW not big Ben or rivers

  54. tval Says:

Thanks for responding. I’ll ask again later.
Remember those are Glennon’s NFL stats, on a terrible team with VJax and Tiquan Underwood (out of the league last year) and Tim Wright (UDFA rookie in 2013) and three different starting RBs and Schiano and Arroyo and numerous penalties and terrible OL play etc.

Surely Fameis Jameis will easily eclipse those paltry numbers since he will have not only VJax but also Mike Evans (1st round) and ASJ (2nd round) and all three RBs plus Sims back and healthy, and an experienced OC in Koetter, and undoubtedly a much softer schedule than MG8 faced his rookie year.

Anybody else? Predictions for Winston’s early stats.

  62. Kaptain Morgan Says:

Rivers is the safe, feel good option that sell jerseys & tickets while above all else avoids a potential public relations issue that could split the already delicate fan base. The Bucs would be stupid not to look at this option if the compensation package is fair and right that is also contingent on Rivers resigning a new deal.

Rivers wants to raise his 7 kids in a family oriented city, like San Diego, which is why he is refusing to sign a new contract with the Chargers over concerns that he may play in LA. Tampa has San Diego like weather and is more similar to San Diego than it is to LA.

He probably has at least 4-5 years left as a top 12 QB in the league. For a franchise like the Bucs who have never had a franchise QB, this is a close as they can get to getting one for a significant time rather than risking the uncertainty and/or waiting on the maturation process from College to the Pros of a Winston or Mariota.

  63. SOEbuc Says:

  64. Erik the WiseMMan Says:

This Rivers comparison is actually what I’d be hoping for from Winston, but I’m worried that he’ll be more of a Cutler….. I think Mariota is a combo of Russell Wilson, Aaron Rodgers, and maybe a sprinkle of some Andrew Luck.

  65. charactermatters Says:

All of these Dungy haters that claim he can’t evaluate QB talent: can you inform me of Any great qb that Dungy had a chance to draft and didn’t? Not saying there are none….I just can’t think of any so please educate me.

  66. charactermatters Says:

Since no one answered I did my own research. Through the early years I found only drafting Shawn King instead of the greatness that is Aaron Brooks! LOL. Further research led to his true misses: Tom Brady who everyone missed repeatedly, and in his last draft with the Buccaneers he missed out on Drew Brees who went with the first pick in the second. I did no research on his time in Indy since he was probably satisfied with the QB he had.

  67. BoltIsle Says:

There is a better chance of Erik being named Sportswriter of the Year than Jameis being a clubhouse cancer like Cutler. He has never been accused of that.

  70. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

Man…I don’t think I can take this Winston crap any more. Dude is neither boom nor bust at this point, and people think he’s 100 percent boom?

Winston is not God. He is not Phillip Rivers. Not a Manning. Not Brees. Not Big Ben, and not Tom Brady.

He is none of those guys. Period.

You don’t succeed in the NFL by being like someone else. You do it by paving your own roads. He hasn’t earned any of these comparisons, and frankly, I’m getting mighty tired of them.

  71. WS99 Says:

Bonzai nobody is saying he is a 100% hall of famer. However, he is a top tier QB prospect with a great college resume, a strong arm, and a high football IQ. What he gives all Bucs fans is hope for a better future for years to come.

Also I keep hearing people bashing FSU fans for being homers. I am not an FSU fan but I have plenty of friends as well as people on this site that are. When EJ Manuel came all of my FSU friends said that he “sucked” and he never should have gone that high. They said the same thing about Ponder too. I have heard those same sentiments echoed on JBF as well. Do you think it is possible that they have watched Jameis up close and personally and know that he is the real deal. If all of them had said Manuel and Ponder would be great I would say they couldn’t be trusted. However, they didn’t and I think they just realize that the latest FSU star is the real deal.

    Thanks for responding!
First, since I have season tickets in the East Club Section 234, I suspect I will remain a Bucs fan for many years to come, and in fact will support whomever is wearing their uniform, even though I certainly have my opinion about who is playing well or not. I love the Joe Bucs Fan site just as much, even though I often DISAGREE with their takes. Even though I post only sparingly, I actually read every single article and every single response. I’m usually too busy to post during normal working hours, and that is why most of my posts are at the end of the day when threads have already passed me by. Surprisingly, my wife feels it is much better for my mental health to spend my time reading the JBF comments, rather than get so agitated by reading the political news blogs and comments. LOL. So, yes I expect I will post some in the future, especially if MG8 is traded and “blossoms” elsewhere.

As to your prediction, I am surprised you “lowballed” Jameis Winston with only 27 TDs and 17 INTs. By comparison, “ol’ cement shoes” had 25 TDs and only 15 INTs in his first 16 starts. Don’t you think the best QB prospect since Andrew Luck, Heisman trophy winner, only one loss his entire college career, the first overall pick in the 1st round of the NFL draft, the consensus “savior” of the franchise should do better than ONLY two more TDs and 2 more INTs than MG8, a lowly 3rd round pick who never did anything in college. Plus he will have VJax, Evans, and ASJ —– the Dunkaneers, as well as an entire draft for offense last year, and a shiny new, experienced OC in Koetter, and any additional OL help they draft or pick up. Oh I almost forgot—– he will also have the IT factor too!
