Jameis Watch: Jason Licht Says “Check The Box”

March 2nd, 2015

jameis 0221Crab-legs-stealing, BB-gun-shooting, obscenity-hollering, Heisman-Trophy-winning, former national champion Jameis Winston, the pride of Florida State University, continues to look like a much better quarterback prospect than Mike Glennon and Josh McCown.

It’s Joe’s daily nugget on the Jameis Watch, celebrating the best quarterback ever to wear No. 5 in the state of Florida.

Joe’s drooling at the thought of the Bucs drafting a quarterback. Of course, Joe’s choice is Jameis Winston.

And while it is the season of smoke, Tampa Bay general manager Jason Licht was unafraid to get specific on his evaluation of Marcus Mariota and Winston.

Speaking recently on SiriusXM NFL Radio, Licht detailed some of the Bucs’ criteria for a potential rookie QB. It should tell fans that the race is tight.

“We want a guy that’s a football junkie. And we want a guy that’s considered the hardest worker on the team. And we want a guy that’s highly intelligent. And we want a guy that’s highly driven and highly competitive,” Licht said. “Both, the two quarterbacks that are being talked about most around here today, both those guys fit. You know, check the box on all those things.”

This won’t calm the great quarterback debate, but it should make Bucs fans smile. Your team is in position to hit the jackpot.

Just pick the guy who’s ready to play and ready to lead.

    It’s not close at all.

…and we should want a guy who doesn’t give a hoot about baseball….

Sounds like a Tie, the Tiebreaker you ask? Off the feild behavior, edge Mariota. He’s our guy.

Close on drive but give me the guy that is the most “natural thrower” please. I also want a vocal leader…alpha dog kinda guy

Agreed May the best QB win. Also. This free agency class is looking really good and even more quality

Licht said he has scouted Mariota four times over the past two seasons. Ditto Winston. He said he has seen every college game of each player on tape now. I asked Licht if he could pick out a play from both players that he felt typifies them. He said he couldn’t think of just one for Mariota, because there were many that highlighted his athleticism and passing ability. But then he pulled out his smart phone and said, “If I see a good play I want to keep, I put it on my phone,” he said. “Look at this one from Jameis. I was actually at this game.” With that he touched the screen a few times and called up a play from the 2013 Syracuse-Florida State game, and held the phone out for me to see.

“Just watch Jameis here, not the running back,” Licht said. (Here’s a shaky YouTube clip of the same play.)

With FSU at its 26-yard line, Winston handed the ball to running back Levonte Whitfield, and as Whitfield looked for a hole inside, Winston circled back out of the play. Then Whitfield broke through the line to the right, and cut back left, running against the grain, out-running the competition. But there was one cornerback left to beat, Syracuse’s Julian Whigham.

I’m just watching Winston. When he sees Whitfield break through the line, Winston’s at about the 20-yard line, and he starts sprinting as fast as he can up the field. You can see that Winston, once he gets about 30 yards into the sprint, is aiming solely for Whigham. At about the Syracuse 37, Whigham is in position to tackle Whitfield, but here comes Winston, 43 yards into a dead sprint, lunging at Whigham and blocking him out of the play. An amazing effort play by Winston.

“You’d think I’d show you a pass play, right?’’ said Licht. “That was a competitive play—it shows you so much about the player.

I get a kick out of how everybody for Jameis and everybody for Marcus think they are right and that it should be obvious to everyone else. The only thing that is obvious is that the Bucs need a franchise quarterback and there are tow potential candidates. Which one will become obvious only after the selection is made.

  13. Eric Says:

    @cream

Well she might beat him in the 40!

I wonder if he covered “green eggs and ham”. That one always made me hungry.

  14. P'cola Buc Says:

“Pick the guy ready to play and ready to lead”…..Sounds more like Winston than it does Mariota.

  15. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I’m surprised Licht didn’t say he’d like his pick to be a Heisman winner….that’s how close the two are on the list….
We are likely to be guessing on the pick untl draft day….

  16. Eric Says:

We’re Bucs fans, all we got is wishful thinking.

  17. Skyline Crew Says:

But but it isn’t that close. Can’t be. I saw a mock draft that said otherwise. What does Licht know.

  18. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    Licht provided more clues…

I want a guy with an M & S in their first name and an I and a T in their last name.

    Also…he wants a QB with a sub 5 sec in the 40…..

As an avid JW supporter, I must admit its close. However that play that Licht had on his phone of JW against the Cuse was special, like many others by him, including his first game against Pitt, the run against OSU, and of course all the comebacks, believe me I am no Nole fan, for me it’s all about the U, but I am a Bucs fan, give me JW, but if MM comes to us I will support, until I see JW go off on the rest of the league

  33. RastaMon Says:

@Tom Edrington….John Lynch was a pitcher..he actually threw the first ever pitch of the Miami Marlins

  34. Howard Cosell Says:

It’s getting a little slow around here.
    We need a story.
No worries. The shizzle will hit the fizzle once the moves start.
Every signing and release will have secret Winston messages
encoded in it and we’ll debate the issue.

Here’s hoping for good smart productive moves that get the
zeitgeist of the team moving in a winning direction.

  35. Eric Says:

Its all the bucs going through the motions so they can say they did their due diligence and “investigated” and whatnot.

    They already know their board.

And they know their taking Jameis.

    Its obvious.

  36. MariotaOrWinstonOrWalkdaPlank Says:

“And they know their taking Jameis.”

I would highly disagree with that. 🙂

  37. Erik with CleanAthletics.com Says:

  42. Eric Says:

    Its not about winning now.

Winston is simply the better player. Short term. Long term. Whatever term.

  43. Erik with CleanAthletics.com Says:

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not a Winston hater… I support the dude in general, but I couldn’t ever choose him over Mariota if I was the Bucs. He’s got every tool anyone could ever want in a QB. And he’s got a strong competitive fire, even though he’s not as outspoken as Winston…. I’m sure u guys read the detailed account of the combine interviews. Mariota is on top of his game, gentlemen. I think he will be quite efficient running the offense from Week 1. Watch. I think he’ll end up ill surprising alot of people bcuz of his work ethic and intelligence, combined with his God-gifted physical abilities.

  48. ndog Says:

It’s so sad that you guys hoping for us to draft Mariots don’t realize that you should just be hoping for us to suck. This guy has bust written all over him. Name the other qb that is soft spoken, from a spread offense, not accurate on throws in the red zone and didn’t win crap as a team in college that went on to be successful in the NFL. I mean I’m not trying to be a jerk but do you guys really feel like this guy can make it in the NFL? I mean what has he done to make him so special, that you guys think he can overcome all of these obstacles when no one else had ever done it?

  51. knuckledragger Says:

Im not sure how much I agree with the “Hunting Ground” being made when it is still just supposition and I am non biased towards Winston. I’m not sure but I think this move would be unprecedented in this situation. It being aired could cost Winston a great deal in the end. I just hope that it doesn’t cost the Bucs.

  52. BP52 Says:

Mariota will be hitting his prime about the same time that Winston will be scrubbing out. Sorry Winston apologists, but he will not be a winner in the NFL

  53. ndog Says:

See Mikeh that is just another example of not knowing what you are talking about. He had done this many times before now. But ESPN has not told you to think that so you would not know cause you clearly can’t think for yourself. #brainwashed

  54. knuckledragger Says:

    @ndog. Pot, meet Kettle.
Just my observations from a non biased point of view.

  55. Bucs#1 Says:

What really amazes me is how all of you Winstonites just automatically assume that if the Bucs do draft Winston that the Bucs will “win now” No way that’s going to happen. Not gonna happen. He just turned 21 and has only played 2 years of college ball against weak opponents. No way is he ready for the NFL. I can’t wait to see all of the excuses that the Winstonites come up with when Winston starts to really stink, lose and make a fool out of himself and his team

  56. Eric Says:

Hunting Grounds is a big flop and barely a ripple. A few reports from the agenda crowd about it but not much else.

Certainly hasn’t generated some sort of uproar that would change the bucs mind.

I see the “victim” is back to alleging she was drugged. Guess she forgot about the toxicology report and her testimony to the Supreme Court Judge.

Her hunt for cash seems to be fizzling.

  57. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Licht wants a QB with Rose Bowl experience…..

  58. mikeh Says:

ya ndog nice name. and you know what your talking about sure. hey those are my opinions you don’t have to like them. and I don’t care what you think. worry about yourself. that’s the problem with you Winston lovers. if one person says anything about Winston you start crying and putting people down. but its ok to say s**t about mariota oh he s***s whatever you have no clue how either QB is going to be like in the nfl. but you know it all!!!! blablabla same crap! out of your piehole!

  59. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @Knuckledragger

It’s not the movie being made that’s the problem…..its including the Winston accuser and legitimizing her by including her with actual rape victims…..I haven’t seen the movie but I doubt they went out of their way to point out the “alleged” part.
This is truly a nightmare PR sitiuation for Winston & the team that drafts him…not necessarily a dealbreaker…but a problem.
Winston is looking at a rocky future in so far as endorcements are concerned.

  60. Eric Says:

Just like you don’t have the slightest proof that Winston visited the school because his agent told him to, Mr. Mikeh.

I don’t expect the Bucs to win right away with Jameis. But I do think they might have a franchise QB for the next 12-15 years.

    Notice I said might.

The best football minds in the world pick busts. Jameis could bust. Mariota could bust.

    Draft is a crap shoot.

  61. Bucs#1 Says:

Hearing that Winston’s weight got up to 262 after the Rose Bowl is more than a little alarming. That’s a whole lot of Crab Legs. Jamarcus Russell 2.0

  62. ndog Says:

See you guys miss these little things called facts that you never seem to respond to. I state Mariota has a poor % in the red zone (fact) is coming from a spread offense (fact), soft spoken (fact), didn’t win crap in college (fact). You can get mad and call names but if you notice I stick to facts but you don’t use those because there aren’t any to support your argument. Just like people make stuff up about Jameis. He has clearly made mistakes but he is made out to be the devil when in reality he is just a confident kid that we need here in Tampa.

  63. mikeh Says:

agree ERIC I don’t know but its good for him no. he needs to repair his image so if I were his agent that’s something I would do. just saying.

  64. Eric Says:

    Not a nightmare.

Low level documentary with limited distribution rehashing what has been reported for two years.

The grand premier was a blip. Picked up by the usual suspects. Salon, etc.

    It’s hardly a serious documentary.

  65. Bucs#1 Says:

I know I brought this up already, but I find it very interesting that the Bucs are meeting with Leonard William’s representatives. Maybe they are starting to realize that with the #1 pick in the draft you take the #1 player in the draft

  66. Eric Says:

The reports say Winston was at 245 after rose bowl, not 262.

    http://www.tampabay.com/sports/football/bucs/jameis-winstons-latest-issue-weight/2218422

  67. mikeh Says:

@ bucs#1 would not be a bad pick for sure. but we need a QB that’s for sure!

  68. ndog Says:

Eric don’t bring up facts it angers the baseless Mariota supporters.

  69. Eric Says:

    Williams could also bust.

  70. MariotaOrWinstonOrWalkdaPlank Says:

“poor % in the red zone”

Alright, and? Plenty of blemishes in Jameis’ stats as well.

    “spread offense”

So? How is that automatically a bad thing? The NFC Team with 2 straight Super Bowl appearances runs a spread offense.

    “soft spoken”

So he has to be loud and proud to be a good leader? He’s not allowed to be a leader AND humble and not overconfident? How is that a negative?

    “didn’t win crap in college”

What does that mean? He didn’t win the National Championship? Because that’s the only thing he DIDN’T win in college, though he did make it to one. 36-5 record, Rose Bowl MVP, Fiesta Bowl MVP, Alamo Bowl MVP, Heisman Trophy Winner, Maxwell Award, etc.

Just trying to understand your reasoning.

  71. mikeh Says:

I also read 262. but that don’t matter there are so many stories out there you don’t know what to believe.

  72. mikeh Says:

only the Winston crew gets the facts. lmao.

  73. bucs4lyfe Says:

Lol is that what buc fans do haha drop a quarterback because of his 40 time? The combine told us nothing we don’t already know, Winston is the best prospect but it’s nice to know they don’t think they’ll go wrong with either one meaning once again Glennon will lose the starting job in preseason

  74. Eric Says:

well if anyone has a legit source that shows Winston was at 262 after the rose bowl I’d like to see it.

But, it would be par for the course to make it up.

Like alleging his agent told him to go to the school to read Dr. Seuss.

    C’mon.

And the Bucs can easily fix the baseball thing in his contract.

  75. ndog Says:

That Is the goal to win it all, Jameis did Mariota didn’t you telling me that’s not important? Also zero 4th quarter comebacks for Mariota. Not against Stanford, not against OSU, none! But I guess that doesn’t matter either because with the great Mariota we will never be behind right?

  76. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @Eric

It’s not just the movie….it’s the Titlle 9 lawsuit and the likelyhood of a civil suit…..it is a combination of events that keep this issue in the press. I’m not saying it can’t be overcome…but compared to an average player’s PR…..and this is a potiential #1 overall pick….this could be categorized as a nightmare.
Now you can minimize it all you like…but that along with all the other circled wagons isn’t going to make it go away.

  77. Tampabaybucfan Says:

And….don’t confused my opinions over the PR issue with my opinions on the accusation….I don’t believe the accuser and think Winston is getting a raw deal and is in a very difficult position…..defending hiimself only brings more attention to it.

  78. Bucs#1 Says:

Chris Landry said this past Friday on the large puppy show that he was asked by 7 teams to help conduct their player interviews. He interviewed Mariota and Winston 3 times each. In one of those interviews Winston was asked about his weight and said that after the Rose Bowl he weighed 262 after playing in the Rose Bowl in the 250’s. Go listen for yourself

  79. BP52 Says:

Oh come on, everybody knows that Winston couldn’t read Dr. Seuss unless it’s Crab Legs and Ham

  80. MariotaOrWinstonOrWalkdaPlank Says:

Gotta be up for the dumbest thing said all day.

So Peyton Manning, Eli Manning, Andrew Luck, Sam Bradford, Matt Stafford, and anybody else who’s been a 1st round QB “didn’t win crap in college” just because they didn’t win the National Championship????

These are individuals, Championships are won by teams, not individuals.

  81. BringBucsBack Says:

Would love to have some “west coast” perspective on here to counterbalance some of this Garnet & Gold homer-ism; ya know, people that have actually watch MM play and have followed his career as closely as the JW crowd seems to have followed him.

  82. MariotaOrWinstonOrWalkdaPlank Says:

I haven’t followed Mariota his whole career so I don’t know if that’s true. But even if it is, how exactly do you expect Mariota to perform 4th Quarter comebacks when his team is never down in the 4th? It’s never a bad thing to NOT BE LOSING in the last quarter of the game, but you somehow flip that into a negative. Jameis has all the 4th quarter comeback because of poor 1st half play he had to make up for. But I don’t hold that over Winston’s head because football is a TEAM GAME. It wasn’t just Jameis that was down it was the FSU defense and the rest of his offense and team.

Winston is the best QB prospect talent wise since Andrew Luck. Period. For that reason alone we should take a shot at him. That doesn’t mean he wont ruin his career with his off the field behavior, but given his talent I think its a risk worth taking. After all, the draft is pretty much a crap shoot anyway, might as well gamble on the most talented players.

  97. Andrew 1 Says:

Also, I’m just looking at this purely from a football perspective. I’m not taking into account anything he’s done off the field. I don’t condone anything he’s done, but I’m also not going to judge him for anything either. All that should be judged about him from FOOTBALL fans is whether or not he can play FOOTBALL. Everything else will work itself out.

Just imagine what would have happened if the bucs passed on Warren Sapp because of his alleged cocaine use. Mostly likley… no super bowl. And that’s what helped build the bucs into a super bowl winning team, its because we took a chance on players (and even Gruden) because of their football prowess, not because of anything else. Im sorry people but this is not a morality contest. Sure, I want all my bucs to be upstanding citizens, but thats just unrealistic of a football team. We used to make bold moves on talented players with questionable character, and it got us a superbowl. Do it again with Winston, and it might just happen again.

I’m sorry brother, but you have jumped to conclusions. You know I respect you and all, but I have to disagree…

loggedontosay isn’t even in the top 5 trolls. He hasn’t even graduated from under the bridge of the 3 Billy Goats Gruff.

    Just saying…

    What exactly are you saying?

Winston’s “weight” was 231 at the combine and that’s all that matters.

Some of you are silly Sally’s.

  102. White Tiger Says:

Yep, his weight was 231 at the combine…didn’t look like a solid 231…but hey, it’s hard dropping 35 lbs in 30 days…you can’t expect Kid Fameis to build muscle AND lose weight…all while being required pick up his free Publix crab legs, and McDonalds cokes…right?

  103. Bill Says:

Is Jameis Winston the best QB available? Yes.

He’s the best draft prospect, he’s the best free agent prospect.

Other than the fact that we’re already pretty strong at DT, it seems like the same who want Winston would also be the ones who want Suh…. Just win, right? Who cares about class??? Or character?!??
    —————

Good character has won exactly ZERO games in the history of the NFL… And I want Winston but not Suh… your rationale is about as bad as your talent evaluations.

  106. Phil Says:

Good news for Jameis. He has already trademarked “Famous Jameis”.

    here’s my checkmarks:
    has stolen > check
    possible sexual assault > check
has blown up in weight > check
has mike glennon speed > check
has a wind up, “Leftwich” delivery > check
….it’s crazy to think the Bucs would gamble on this cat, with more than one way that he could turn into an outright bust and headache for the team, and set the team back another 5+ years….

  108. Eric Says:

The Title IX la suit is a joke, given the “victim” was afforded a full evidentiary hearing before a independent Judge, and was unable to prove her claim.

She also failed to respond to 20 requests by the University to give a statement about the incident so said Title IX inquiry could proceed.

Lastly, I highly doubt a civil action against Jameis is in play given her statement in the “documentary” that she was drugged, in direct contradiction to the toxicology report and her prior testimony. No lawyer in their right mind would allow her to go public with more falsehoods if a civil action is contemplated. That in addition to the prior blatant inconsistencies in her initial series of statements on this matter.

Her claims are going nowhere, just as they have so far.

In 2-3 years, at most, this will be as much a bogus comparison as leaf/manning..winston, and its not really close

  110. David Says:

Why is it you guys compare Winston to busts and other “black” qb’s who failed but don’t compare Mariota to anyone? Lest not forget there was a “throwing Samoan” in the league before. How did he work out? Also call the ACC weak competition. Hmm the ACC had much better statistical defenses than the PAC 12. Stop just spewing venom guys, sound like a bunch of females. I have reservations about both guys but I’ll be happy with either one as long as they come in, work hard and f-ing produce!

    You must be new here…

People have already said that he’s the next Aaron Rodgers, Russell Winston and Colin Kaepernick

Highly Intelligent? That rules out Winston.
