New Bucs OC Dirk Koetter wants a quick mind calling signals.

New Bucs OC Dirk Koetter wants a quick mind calling signals.

Bucs fans are trying to play Maxwell Smart to figure out who the Bucs will choose as their next quarterback come April 30 (if Tampa Bay drafts a quarterback).

One reason fans are trying to be sleuths (and the Bucs are doing their best with their own version of Enigma) is there is nothing else going on.

The NFL season is over. Did you see the drek offered on TV yesterday? Dear God, the USFL was so, so, so far ahead of its time.

It was so bad on TV yesterday (Golf? Gag. Non-basketball association? Gag. Kickball? Gag. Bad college basketball? Friggin’ yawn! And don’t get Joe started on chicks basketball!) that Joe had to subject himself to watching replays of Patriots games on the NFL Network.

At least Bucs offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter gave another hint/non-hint about what quarterback the Bucs may draft come the final hours of April, so documented Woody Cummings of the Tampa Tribune.

“I think one of the things that is really (underrated) is how fast you process information, because in the NFL things are coming at you fast and furious, and if you can’t process information, it’s tough to be successful,’’ Koetter said.

“Second would be toughness, and I say that because when you play quarterback in the NFL, you’re going to have to demonstrate toughness on a daily basis and certainly every Sunday. But for me (the top thing) is intelligence.

“Arm strength, accuracy, mobility — those are all things that are important as well, but the ability to process information and make great decisions, that would be number one on my list.”

Joe thinks there is a hint in there, but for the sake of not starting an insurrection this early in the morning, Joe will just let his readers figure it out.

Doesn’t every coach want what Koetter wants? A smart , tough quarterback who can throw deep with accuracy and doesn’t turn the ball over? What coach actually wants some brittle lummox for a quarterback who can’t hit the broadside of a barn and turns the ball over so often that his rig is pulled by eight reindeer?

Koetter’s talking Mike Glennon. Between #TheCreepyCrab and Mariota, He’s talking Mariota. #TheCreepyCrab #NotSmart

  2. Barry Says:

Joe, your post time and actual time may be off an hour.

  3. David Says:

    Sounds like Mariota!

  4. Tony Says:

Koetter will have additional insight into Mariota’s real ability because of his connection to Oregon’s coach. Winston will be vetted like no other college player in history. Truly believe that whomever the Bucs go with come draft day, we should all be comfortable with it. I prefer Mariota but I’m absolutely fine with Winston because if we take him he checked out.

  5. Phil Says:

Anyone who thinks Winston isn’t smart is sadly mistaken. Has he done some dumb stuff absolutely. Most 20 year olds do dumb stuff but he will mature. Winston will be the next quarterback of the Bucs.

  6. Nick Says:

Mariota did not call the plays nor allowed to audible. If you think this quote applies to Mariota, it’s only through some seriously tortured logic.

  7. Buxfan Says:

“Tthe ability to process information and make great decisions, that would be number one on my list.”

Sound like he’s been talking to Jimbo Fisher. That is the same thing Jimbo said about Winston.

Sorry gator fans, your hate for Winston is not felt One Bucs. TEBOW IS NOT WANTED IN THE NFL! So get over it already.

  8. darealist727 Says:

Winston is that dude! Quit halting the wheels of progress and let the kid show you that he is the future of this organization. He’s on some “humble pie” like Jimbo said!

  9. Luther Says:

Please let us pick Winston. I will feel so much better about our direction if we pick a real QB.

  10. flmike Says:

Dude, there was a full slate of a real sport on yesterday…3 yes three NHL games on tv…wanna see some of the toughest, best conditioned athletes in the world beat the crap out of each other during non-stop action, then you gotta watch the NHL, it’s what tides me over until baseball is in full swing come June.

  11. Luther Says:

Besides what Big Dog says, no one goes out of their way to watch the NHL unless they are from the north.

  12. Chef Paul Says:

“What coach actually wants some brittle lummox for a quarterback who can’t hit the broadside of a barn and turns the ball over so often that his rig is pulled by eight reindeer?”

Joe’s #1 mystery of 2014 will show Lovie is that coach!! He thinks that kind of QB gives us the best chance to win.

  13. Buccfan37 Says:

I like watching the Lightning but I can’t see the puck. Too bad there is’nt just one near can’t miss QB prospect out there.

  14. OB Says:

With Koetter saying this, I am not concerned about the pick for QB nor I am concerned any more about McCown being on the team. He said it all in that statement.

  15. RustyRhinos Says:

Just “reading” what was quoted I’d say we should be looking at the traits of which QB we might possibly draft. We should look at who made the “best” decisions with the ball. By checking out the passing yards, yards per attempt, touchdowns, and those pesky mistakes called interceptions. Sacks should also be considered. I believe We already have a Qb on our roster who is very intelligent. #8

I don’t have a clue like everyone else who posts here on JBF who we will draft. I have my fingers crossed that we chose a player who will be able to change the loosing ways that we as Bucs fans unfortunately have became accustomed to watching. Be that with a great attitude and great on field play.
    Go Bucs!

  16. Tom Says:

Mariota has never been asked to call a true audible a day in his life, that doesn’t sound like processing too much information to me.

Winston on the other hand has played in a pro style offense where he had to study and predict what the defense was throwing at him and adjust accordingly.

  17. Erik with CleanAthletics.com Says:

Mariota’s coming to Tampa. It’s time to hop off Winston’s big black penis, Joes.

  18. Lovethepewter Says:

    Winston baby

  19. tmaxcon Says:

SAVE the bucs Draft Winston and Fire Lovie. Lovie can take all of his weak choir boys and start a church league flag team. They can call themselves the Hypocrites

  20. Dan Says:

Trade..UP draft both. Qb competition. Fight to the death. Of nfl carreer.

  21. knucknbuc Says:

Mariota. Sorry you fsu fans can’t see what’s byeing said right in front of your faces. I hope u guys will still come out when mariota is killing it for the bucs and jameis leftwich…errr Winston is busting it up in ny or tenn.

  22. Erik with CleanAthletics.com Says:

Knucknbuc, people like u allow me to still have faith in Bucs fans…. All these Winston people are whackjobs.

Please let us pick Winston. I will feel so much better about our direction if we pick a real QB.

Luther, this kind of post contradicts your claim of being an educated black man who thinks for himself and makes calculated assessments or whatever u said…

  24. Tom Says:

Erik’s racial prejudices are coming to light in this thread

  25. Barry Says:

Curious, here’s an article about QBs being Intelligent and there’s hardly any Winstonites to be found. #TheCreepyCrab say, Zup Dat?

  26. Luther Says:

Erik you know nothing about me.

  27. Barry Says:

    @Phil Says,
Most 20 year olds haven’t been accused of multiple crimes, including rape. Especially most college 20 year olds. However; I confess, I don’t know the statistics when broken down by race.

  28. Mr. Patrick Says:

    @Joe
You left out the part of the interview where Koetter said that the most important thing also is the QB not turning the ball over and throwing interceptions. Just an oversight on your part I’m sure

  29. LargoBuc Says:

Glennon, Winston Mariota as long as its one of those three and NOT Mccown ill be happy.

  30. Chris Says:

He wants an intelligent qb. Both mariota and winston are intelligent academic student athletes so where is the hint Joe?

  31. ddneast Says:

The Bucs are being enigmatic because they are trying to see what kind of trade people might give up for either QB. So far, all I hear is teams wanting to move up to draft Mariotta. What does that say about Winston.
I think come draft day if the Bucs don’t draft Winston he is going to start dropping fast, much like Aaron Rogers, Terry Bridgewater and even Dan Marino.
A trade with Cleveland who insiders say covet Mariota and you would probably see the crab leg thief plumment down to the mid first round where actually both QB’s belong at the most.

  32. Supersam Says:

That’s Maritoa all the way, he said everything but spelling it out for us. Sorry Winston mobbers, might to time to start accepting the fact that Mariota is our guy.

  33. ddneast Says:

Oh yes Chris, I think anyone who has been in as much trouble as Winston you would have to be certain they are walking around with a 130 IQ at the very least.
    LOL.

  34. Jack Says:

Tampa Bay Times’ writer and morning radio show co-host Tom Jones was speaking on the subject and said Winston is not all that bright based on his encounters with the projected first overall pick.

  35. canadian bucsfan Says:

    @ Mr Patrick
I’m willing to bet that koetter liked his last QB (Matt Ryan) he threw 19 INTS coming outta college.

  36. canadian bucsfan Says:

    @ Flmike
I agree completely about your comments on the NHL. It’s a great sport to watch!

  37. rayjay1122 Says:

I completely agree that we have to go QB. Who knows which one they will take. It is too bad we are in this situation though because could you just imagine what kind of DL we could have with Leonard Williams playing beside GMC? But grabbing the best DL would be a luxury pick and that is not our biggest need.
