Dominik On Jets’ Short List?

December 25th, 2014

TCDominik11Joe knows Jets fans who ache and moan daily because Darrelle Revis, a Pro Bowler again, is a thriving member of the hated New England Patriots.

Dee Milliner, um, didn’t soothe them.

These Jets fans believe former rockstar Bucs general manager Mark Dominik fleeced the Jets last year, when the Bucs traded for the future Hall of Famer. They don’t get why Lovie Smith ditched a superstar so he could afford Michael Johnson, Alterraun Verner and Brandon Myers.

The consensus in New York is the Jets’ entire coaching staff and front office will be blown up next week. Don Banks, senior NFL writer for Sports Illustrated, dove into that subject yesterday, and Dominik was one of three names mentioned as a possible replacement.

On the GM front first, that job was difficult to fill the last time it was vacant, after the firing of Mike Tannenbaum, and I don’t think the search will be any easier this time around for Johnson, who is not seen as someone candidates are eager to tie the future of their careers to. I expect the Jets to go hard after promising Ravens assistant general manager Eric DeCosta, especially since Casserly and DeCosta have history together dating to DeCosta’s days as a personnel intern in Washington. But DeCosta has been hesitant to leave Baltimore in the past, where he has been groomed as GM Ozzie Newsome’s eventual replacement, and I don’t see much changing on that front on behalf of the always chaotic Jets.

Former Bucs general manager turned ESPN analyst Mark Dominik could be in line for an interview in New York, but if there’s a coaching-GM tandem to keep on the radar screen it’s Baltimore offensive coordinator Gary Kubiak and Texans director of college scouting Mike Maccagnan.

What’s interesting here is that the Jets need a quarterback and Dominik is no stranger to very bold trades.

And this is another reason the Bucs need to lose Sunday to secure the No. 1 overall pick.

The Bucs don’t need a guy like Dominik landing the Jets job and, say, leapfrogging the Bucs from the No. 3 hole into the top spot.

    Merry Christmas Bucs fans.
All I asked Santa for is an OL.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. Dominik was not a bad GM but I think his moves were significantly better when Schiano came on as coach (David, Banks, Wright, etc…). I think many of those moves or picks were made by Schiano who was a very good evaluator of college players but you still have to give the GM credit. I even liked the Revis trade. Revis is this year the best CB in the game. That’s just my opinion and I’ve watched a lot of Pats games. Getting him for $16 mill per year NONGUARANTEED was genius. Heck all the pats fans I know are willing to give him $15-16 mill per year guaranteed long term deal.

  3. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Great…..Maybe he will trade the Jets up to us…..and give us their 1,2,3,4 & 5th pick…..and the 1st next year!!!

  4. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    Speaking for Pablo

“Pablo wishes all of Pablo’s many, many amigos….Feliz Navidad”

    Speaking for Tampabaybucfan

    “Merry Christmas”

  5. Dickens Says:

If the jets think they are bad now they haven’t seen anything yet if they hire Dominick. Has to be one of the worst gm’s in nfl history and a big reason why we are void of talent and depth.

  6. Destinjohnny Says:

Wish a team in our division would get him. U win or lose games scouting and drafting

  7. Sam Says:

You people are idiots if you thought Dominik was a bad GM.

  8. Architek Says:

    Who cares!!!!!

  9. Mike10 Says:

Ya as much as Dumb Dom gave em in the past I’m not surprised.

  10. Buccfan37 Says:

I have never made one comment about Dominik. Still don’t have one.

  11. mac Says:

Why would you replace a totally clueless GM with one that is even more clueless?

Mark Dominik’s first line of business will be to draft a QB from Kansas State that could only win 5 games his senior year and crown him the franchise QB… Then he will draft a few defensive ends that are already injured and worthless… Then he will bring Revis back to NY for a team friendly $20 million a year and trade away their first and second round pick for him…

Uggg… I hope he gets the job… It will be one less team we have to worry about being competitive…

    Merry Xmas!!!

    Mark Dominik sucks!!!

  12. JonBuc Says:

Short list…short bus…one of the two. The Jets do “owe” him for hand delivering Sheldon Richardson and a 4th in exchange for taking a prima donna off their hands and funding his year of rehab.

  13. Keith Says:

So Freeman lights up the NFL in his second season with two rookie receivers and a freaky tight end, plus running for a ton of yards, and that was a bad draft pick? Then he gets a new offense two years later and sets franchise records with the 9th ranked offense. And that was a bad draft pick? Dominik doesn’t coach, people.

  14. BucTrooper Says:

And to see the Jets considering the worst GM In Bucs History as an option… Well that explains why they’re the Jets.

And Sam… You’re a dolt if you have one positive thing to mention about Dominik who consistently missed on 1st and 2nd round picks and is the broker of the worst trade in NFL history.

  15. Brandon Says:

Maybe if Dominik took the Jets job he could make up for the bad trades he made when he was with the Bucs. A 2nd rounder and a big contract for a me-first TE with a bad wheel. A 1st and 3rd rounder and a record contract for a CB fresh off an ACL injury. I’m still miffed he gave up a 6th to the Eagles for Reggie Brown. Didn’t we give up two 4ths to move up to take Stocker a few spots away?

I’m thinking Dominik will offer US a trade we can’t refuse. Their next 3 number 1’s and 2’s, a number 3 from this season, and the home number of Rachel Watson for Joe. We would drop down but not too far to take Winston and then rebuild this team the right way.

  16. BucTrooper Says:

    Dear Brandon,

….A “me first TE” who NEVER missed a game. Look it up. He didn’t whine about HIS toe. Got 48 games out of him.

  17. caradoc Says:

“You people are idiots if you thought Dominik was a bad GM.”

Yeah, “bad” isn’t a harsh enough adjective. “Epically Incompetent” comes closer.

  18. Pickgrin Says:

Dominick’s terrible drafting left the Bucs in a talent hole it will take at least 2 more years to climb out of. Any team who hires Mark Dominick as GM after looking at all the evidence of his “qualifications” deserves the horrible results their team will suffer.

Picking Barron at #7 overall (WITH LUKE KUECHLY ON THE BOARD!!!!) is just 1 glaring example of his terrible decision making.

  19. BucTrooper Says:

Gotta remember that Dominik drafted Mason Foster a year prior… He wasn’t even LOOKING at Luke. He thought he found the man.

    And he didn’t.

  20. Joe Says:

Dominick’s terrible drafting left the Bucs in a talent hole it will take at least 2 more years to climb out of.

Check out Chucky’s drafts. You might have a different definition of “terrible.”

  21. Harry Says:

It is a little surprising to me you guys are ragging on Dominic in light of the abysmal job L&L did this year, especially in FA. The only segment of the team that did a decent job was the D, where Lovie relied mostly on players brought in by Dom (except of course for Casper at RDE).

On the O side of the ball where Lovie hand picked about 3/4 of the players, the Bucs failed miserably, worse than under Schiano. We should be very afraid Lovie is in charge of rebuilding the Bucs roster, very afraid! Dom would be a huge upgrade for us now I think

  22. Another J Says:

I agree, and have been saying the same thing about Chuckle, and Bruce Allen… They are the reason the cupboard is mostly empty.
Dominic wasn’t perfect, but he was an excellent salary cap manager, and Most of contracts were non cap restraining for the Bucs, So far he’s proven to be better at spending the Glazier’s money than Licht, and Smith!

  23. Pickgrin Says:

Ok Joe and Another J – let me rephrase then. The last 10 years of bad drafting + the Glazers spending the least of any team in the league on players salaries for 8 of those years + the bad coaching hires after the firing of Gruden have left the current Bucs administration in a talent hole that will take at least 2 more years to fully climb out of.

That’s a bit more complete and accurate statement as to the team’s situation.

I certainly did not forget Bruce Allen’s horrible drafting (picking Dexter Jackson #2 with DeSean Jackson on the board in the 2nd round summed up his GM tenure perfectly) – But the residual effects of what happened in 2004-2008 (since it is more distant time wise) is much less responsible for the current mess than what happened from 2009-2013 which was Dominick’s tenure as GM.

I will give credit to Dom where it is due as you pointed out Another J that he was pretty good at signing players to deals that did not put the team in salary cap hell. (Carl Nicks deal excluded but I understand why they wanted him so bad) Rich McCay had this team in really bad shape salary cap wise when he left and that timing coincided with the Glazers slamming the pocket book shut for the better part of the next decade. They decided they weren’t going to pay for FAs and were gonna build through the draft – but their GMs couldn’t hit on enough good players drafted.

This franchise has been a mess for a long time and it starts at the very top. Quite frankly – good ol Chucky was putting together 9 win seasons his last 2 years here with smoke and mirrors.

  24. Dickens Says:

Bruce Allen and grudges were terrible drafters. But that is an absurd reason to defend mark Dominick and his incompetence. Lovie and licht suck too. Like others have said, it all starters at the top.

  25. Curse of Gruden Says:

How many playoff games did we will under Dominick.
    Enough said…

  26. buccinfan Says:

You guys are dumb first he was handed a bad roster and had to start his career with raheem as his coach not to mention be “cap friendly” yes his draft evaluations didnt pan out at first but the more experience he got the better he got at personel. Im a a fan of licht and a believer that he could be a good gm if lovie wasnt handed full control. But rhis domnick ralk is unfair. I dont hear anyone complaining about all the cap space we do have.

  27. Curse of Gruden Says:

    “Dumb” people don’t use punctuation.

  28. ddneast Says:

Fleeced the Jets for a hobbled CB. LOL.
