McCoy: Defense Lineup Changes Are “Interesting”

Change is in the air

Change is in the air

Last week, former starters Mark Barron and Jonathan Casillas were relieved of their Tampa Bay jobs.

Now, more eye-opening change is coming to the Bucs defense, says Gerald McCoy.The Bucs captain sure made it seem like he and his teammates got a wake-up call at practice yesterday. Speaking on the Buccaneers Radio Network last night, McCoy shared there was a distinctly different look on the field Wednesday.

“It was interesting. Interesting. I will say that. It was just an interesting day. And I’ll leave it at that,” McCoy said. “Very interesting day. You take what you want from that. But it was an interesting day. Lot of mix-ups in lineups on defense. So it was an interesting day.

“It was just interesting to see who lined up at certain places on defense.”

So whose roles have changed? Joe’s not sure. Practice isn’t open to media beyond the opening drills.

But Joe suspects there could be widespread change, from Jaqueis Smith in place of Michael Johnson or Will Gholston, to Bradley McDougald taking over for Dashon Goldson, to another fresh face in the Bucs’ revolving door at nickel cornerback.

There’s no doubt Lovie Smith is seeing the same stuff that’s making Ronde Barber ill. There’s only so long that can — or should — be tolerated.

how about a change at head coach?

  2. BFFL Says:

I actually think there is a culture of accountability being started.

  3. Jim Says:

So you want 5 coaches in 7 years? You think that is a winning formula?

  4. SteveK Says:

    Jim,

We didn’t fire Schiano to go 1-15. IMHO, 1-15 doesn’t get Lovie canned, but another bad season in 2015 does.

Lovie’s Bucs are worse than Schiano’s. LvD and Gmc were both playing better for the Schiano man.

  5. mach Says:

    sack them all lol…

  6. Lunchbag AL Says:

What is the mental capacity of you lug heads that want Lovie gone? Do you pieces of samsonite not understand continuity? Continued turn over will cause no free agent signings, no true solid staff due to the short leash, and no retention of our own FA’s. Shall I teach more?

  7. Chef Paul Says:

Interesting. It was interesting. Interesting. Interesting

I wish that passive aggressive prick would just STFU sometimes.

GMC to opponent: “Hey buddy. How is your day? Anything I can do to help, just let me know, I’ll be happy to oblige. See you later, friend.

GMC passive aggressively about his own team: “I’m a leader that don’t lead, because everyone is dumb. People talk too much, because they are awful and dumb. Yada yada yada. blah blah blah. yap yap yap. I wish people would stop the talk. yap yap yap.

  8. sho-nuff Says:

the worst part of all of this is knowing that hubris and his puppet will have such a high draft pick…there is NOTHING I believe in less than their ability to hire talent…NOTHING….

Hubris would have picked that fake Clowney in this years draft…how is he doing?

  9. sho-nuff Says:

Lunchbag…name 1 of their free agents that isn’t hurt or an absolute bust…if their not on the field or coaching if hired then THEY HAVE NO VALUE to this team do you agree?

  10. ForgotAboutDre Says:

I hope there’s some changes, maybe Lovie can actually put aside his pride and bench Michael Johnson until he stops looking invisible out there. Hopefully game film showed him that Jacquies Smith has been exponentially better.

  11. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Good…..time to start benching players that don’t perform regardless of their salary. The object is to win.
    Players do have egos and are human….perhaps riding the pine for a couple of games will get thm going;;;

As for firing Lovie…..ain’t going to happen….he has at least until the end of next year. I know I’m in the minority but I think he will eventually turn this around.

  12. StPeteBucsFan Says:

    @Lunchbag Al

I certainly take your points at continuity. It’s a very valid point. Having said that there are other opposing points that are equally valid…such as cutting your losses while you can…stop throwing good money after bad…fire Love.

I believe both your point and those who wish to cut their losses now after seeing Lovie’s ineptitude are valid.

But it’s that second point that gives Lovie the ultimate job security. Forget about firing Lovie guys. Even IF it’s the wise move.

The Glazers are already eating how many years left on Schiano’s contract.
Do you really suppose the Glazers will fire Love and eat his contract as well.

How much do you believe the Glazers would have to pay to get a “name” coach to take over this mess? Cowher? He’s been out too long anyway. Kiss and make up with Chucky. LMAO And they could never afford Chucky at this point.

If they fire Lovie they would have to pay salaries for three coaches next year, Toes on the line, Lovie’s, and whoever the new guy is. Anybody who believes that let me know. I’d like to sell you some stock in the Sunshine Skyway bridge at a very good price btw.

There is at least a chance the franchise get’s Jameis next year, I understand that speculation both for and against that move.

THERE IS NO CHANCE THE GLAZERS WILL FIRE LOVIE NEXT YEAR!!!
Pleases stop wasting our time on talk about stuff that can NEVER happen!!!

  13. Patrick in VA Says:

It would be interesting if Lovie got real with the players and told them that if they want to play like the season is over then he’ll start coaching like the season is over and went in to full on evaluating for next year mode. Starters who aren’t playing well are treated like they won’t be here next year. Players that don’t play with the heart and pride that McCoy mentioned are given reduced minutes.

These guys need to be reminded that they’re a lot closer to being out of work than they are to their next big contract. Those checks aren’t stroked simply because you made it out of bed that morning.

  14. sho-nuff Says:

I don’t think they should fire Lovie…BUT he shouldn’t have complete control period!

Been there, done that with Dungey and we probably missed out on 2 championships while he was loyal to Clyde freaking Christenson and 3 and out Shula….hubris has NO PLACE in leadership… his arrogant stubborn mentality will take a toll on the fans and the media just like he did in Chicago…

Look if you’re all in with never hitting that climax then Lovie is your guy…if you want to explode and start coming off your front foot instead of reacting then he’s NOT…

  15. Patrick in VA Says:

@ShoNuff – you’ve sort of proven Lunchbag’s point. Because of the constant staff changes, we don’t get solid FAs. We get the ones that are looking for a huge pay check and they don’t care about winning. They’re willing to play for whoever is willing to pay them the most and they’re going to cash in. Injuries can’t be helped but there’s a reason why we keep getting passed over by quality players and coaches. Chip Kelley replaced a coach that had been in Philly for over a decade. That’s a job that he can feel secure enough about leaving his cushy college job for. We need to ride out these growing pains and at least give him a chance to assemble his team

  16. Destinjohnny Says:

    Bring back Schinno!!!!

  17. sho-nuff Says:

    Patrick..point taken…I don’t disagree…However I maintain the fact that he shouldn’t have complete control.

  18. Patrick in VA Says:

@Sho-nuff – I’m not there to see who makes what decisions so I’m not going to debate that point. Obviously, it’s never good to have a single point of failure but I highly doubt that that’s what we have here. Someone that is open to bringing in data analysts to look at information about their team a different way is clearly open to other points of view.

  19. Buccfan37 Says:

McCoy said seven times that it was an interesting day, without revealing anything interesting about it. Some Lovie rubbing off on him, say something while saying nothing.

  20. BucfaninMi Says:

They’re not firing Lovie until they’re not paying Schiano anymore.

  21. OB Says:

    Joe

It is interesting that people think the salaries of the coaches make a difference in keeping a coach when they have given multimillions to players and cut them.

I believe the reason that GMC is not saying is so the Falcons cannot plan on how to play against the new group, they will just have to wing it or it could be smoke and mirrors. In any case I want to see GMC sock it to Matty Ice so he melts down. We owe them a big one.

  22. BuccDeez Says:

We owe the Entire NFL ass kickings,( soon come , ya hear )
But to the rest of u MF’s since u think u know what’s best for the Tampa Bay Bucs, get your Fat Ass off the couch and jump into the GM , HC , or even CEO chair make it better for us in Buc Nation . But u can’t because in your home your wives are on Unable to perform list, your sons are a Bust and your daughters unrestricted Free Agent seeking the league minimum. U guys give it up while your behind. ( we suck again )

  23. 941 bucs fan Says:

I agree. Lets get rid of lovie.. Im tired of hearing people say you want “x” amount of coaches in “x” amount of years. Look at the browns, the chiefs. Lovie and his scheme just doesnt work in 2014..maybe in 2007

  24. Skyline Crew Says:

Interesting. That is all I can say interesting. It will be interesting to see what happens. It will be interesting to see if it works. Just interesting that is what I will say.

  25. 941 bucs fan Says:

And to the guy that said they would have to pay 3 salaries next year if they fire lovie, thats false!!. Schiano will be a Head Coach next year whether in the NFL or College he will be a head coach. And Lovie will be a head coach in the nfl next year. So the glazers would only have to pay our new coach…FIRE LOVIE

  26. Skyline Crew Says:

Who the hell would take Lovie has a HC after this?

  27. Mike J Says:

I’d be surprised if Gholston were benched; he had the huge mistake vs. the Brownies, but his play has actually been pretty good.Maybe he should move inside on passing downs, or share time outside.

”Tampa Bay Buccaneers: William Gholston has been the best run stopping 4-3 defensive end from the sophomore class with a Run Stop Percentage of 12.0. He has 17 run stops on 142 run snaps. That is the fourth best for all 4-3 defensive ends regardless of experience.” PFF

  28. Lunchbag AL Says:

sho-nuff, I understand what you’re saying. I think Patrick made a lot of the points I would have made, so I’ll simply answer your question to me (if I understood it properly) I think alterraun verner is worth the money they signed him for and performing well. I also think they are getting solid value out of McDonald.

I will quote what Patrick wrote earlier, “We need to ride out these growing pains and at least give him a chance to assemble his team.”

  29. Fort Myers Dave Says:

Well the old axiom is “If it works don’t fix it”… Obviously we are seeing just the opposite with all 3 units of the Bucs this season so any change can not really make things much worse though it is interesting that Lovie and company are tinkering with the defense after it put together what some consider a better effort than the offense or special teams units in Cleveland. Of course that’s just like saying a D grade is better than a couple of Fs….. I just hope the Falcons don’t carve up the Bucs for 56 points again…. Perhaps someone is finally lighting a fire under some Bucs who feel that their jobs are safe. Perhaps McCoy is only alluding to the fact that Verner will probably be out and the Bucs are trying to figure out which backup is going to get exposed by the Falcons Sunday… I’d like to think McCoy is trying to be positive about his team and their chances and probably the best thing he can say w/o trashing anyone is that things are “interesting” at practice. I find that comment (or several as I heard on WDAE) interesting as well. Heres to the Bucs not getting embarrassed again on Sunday….

  30. Mr. Patrick Says:

The last time the Bucs had an offensive minded head coach they won the Superbowl

  31. SOEbuc Says:

Derrick Brooks for president of team and state of florida

  32. BuccDeez Says:

    LunchbagAl& sho nuff
I agree with u guys. There is no thing as a quick fix, give the HNIC a chance to do right by the Bucs. We are a small market team with Big market potential . In 4 years we will be a great team . Remember we are starting from the bottom. It took JJ 4years to make the Cowgirls a Super bowl team. And since they Fired him the team went back to the SB the next year . New coach same team. Since then they cant buy a playoff. And the new coach is no longer coaching. That was just one example. Listen people Leave the coach as it stands, yea the team sucks now on aevery phase . U don’t need a new coach to tell u that . U need a support system. The guy has proven in this NFL league that he can win & he is a team builder, of Coaches, players & staff. Example 2. b4 Lovie got to Chicago and since his departure they weren’t Shiiiiit since the 85 , 86 SBteam. All Facts.

  33. Arealbucsfan Says:

    Banks to FS?

  34. BuccDeez Says:

Hey Coach Gruden is good but he is not GOD. he definitely was offensive minded he just was complicated . He over thinks plays way to often. That’s y after our SB win our team could never find our true identity. But besides that He really was a Great coach. And he has the hard wear to prove it. (We suck again.)

  35. Ray Rice Says:

I find it interesting that Aunt Geraldine is still talking after saying he was done talking last week. Who cares Geraldine? Too dam late to make changes now. Get a sack in the 4th quarter when the game is on the line then talk.

  36. LargoBuc Says:

I would ask Johnson to re negotiate and keep him for depth. If not then trade him for a fifth or even fourth round draft pick.
