Vikings 19, Buccaneers 13 (OT)

October 26th, 2014

It’s not supposed to be this bad. It’s really not.

Your Buccaneers are 1-6 and looking terrible. Frankly, the coaching is dreadful right now. The Bucs offense came out uninspired today and not ready to play at the NFL level.

That’s simply inexcusable off a bye week — at home.

Big-money free agent acquisition Lovie Smith hasn’t found answers. He hasn’t hired an offensive consultant (at the very least) to help make up for the loss of Jeff Tedford.

The Bucs are now averaging less than four points in the first halves of games. Keep in mind the Bucs drafted all offense back in May. Last year, Tampa Bay averaged 5.2 points in the second half. That got Mike Sullivan a seat on his couch and knocked him out of the NFL completely.

The Bucs defense was ok, but it was nowhere near special. And the prevent defense to close the fourth quarter was atrocious. The pass rush was weak and they didn’t force a turnover. That’s not going to win games with this putrid offense.

Hats off to Bucs kicker Patrick Murray for drilling a couple of long ones and keeping the Bucs in the game.

Stick with Joe through the night for so much more out of this loss from the Stadium on Dale Mabry Highway.

  1. Bucs Fan Since '76 Says:

We are terrible. I cannot believe I wasted yet another Sunday.

  2. bucrightoff Says:

This team needs to be gutted. Keep LVD, McCoy, Evans, ASJ and a few others and then fire Lovie and Licht, purge the roster and bring in real football people to make this a real football team. It’s gonna take a few years yeah, but this current group is simply not good enough to win more than 7 games in a season.

  3. WalkdaPlank Says:

IT’S ALL GLENNON’S FAULT!!! HE SHOULD HAVE TACKLED THAT GUY WHO PICKED UP THE FUMBLE AND RAN IT FOR A TD!!!

    How dare Glennon.

  4. Mdc1965 Says:

We need new owners. The Glazers have run this team into the ground.

  5. John Sapp Says:

Only my beloved Bucs could snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

  6. BoJim Says:

    Just wow.

  7. meh Says:

    I’m blind.

  8. Trubucfan22 Says:

Can we please get off the glennon train? The kid tries and tries but he’s just not good. Against this terrible Vikings team he has just proved he is nothing special. We need to start mccown if Lovie wants to save face in front of the fans. Stop the bleeding and start mccown next week.

  9. don Says:

This reminds me of the 78-79 Creamsikle guys. We are horrible and getting worse 🙁

  10. MadMax Says:

We have competition for the 1st pick…..but we’re well on our way…and TRADE IT DOWN for more picks….and then THAT one for more picks!!

    Yes its that bad 🙁

  11. canadianbuc Says:

    WHY ARE WE SO BAD??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

  12. Incognito Says:

    Piss poor

  13. lurker Says:

glennon sucks! why do you see otherwise?

  14. The South Floridian Buc Says:

Fire Lovie and Licht, gut the team, Keep LVD, GMC, Evans,ASJ, and a few others, throw Lovie into Tampa Bay

  15. passthebuc` Says:

    This is not glennons fault.
    bad route running
    bad coaching
    dropped passes
    offensive line

you want to see how bad he is, put him on waivers and watch the scramble to pick him up

  16. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

lol, look at the MGM hanging onto the one good possession…and even that would not have happened if not for penalties.

The wagon load is getting lighter. I imagine Joe will jump off soon too.

  17. sho-nuff Says:

swing hard JOE…swing very very hard…you are the only journalist in this city not spellbound by another fake off of dungey’s tree….
this team needs a visionary not another “old school” hack that can get through a presser without showing his insecurities….

SWING FOR THE EFFN FENCES JOE!

  18. simeon_97 Says:

This team is fcking terrible. I’m glad i only watched Q4 on and spent time with my family prior. The amount of empty seats is hilarious. of the people in seats 1/3 were probably vikings fans.

We had a great opportunity to capitalize on losses in our division, a win today and we were back in it. I don’t think I’m watching the rest of the season. See you in the offseason, joe. Keep up the good work on this terrible team.

  19. Kalind Says:

It’s not about blaming Glennon for the loss. This ones not on him. But he IS part of the problem. He’s not a point machine, he’s not a winner. Why stick with him? We’re going to have to gut this team again anyway. Gut Glennon too (which means perms manner backup status).

  20. WINdycitybuc Says:

Sorry to say, folks…word is out…NO ONE on this team can hold on to the f’n ball. Absolutely pathetic!

  21. Patrick Says:

Another close game that we couldn’t win. That fumble was typical Succaneer mode right there. Think it’ll be on Comedy Central tonight?

    PATHETIC PATHETIC PATHETIC.

  22. ElioT Says:

Whole NFC south s**ts the bed and they can’t even take advantage of that.

Lovie & Co. have fostered a GIANT SH*T STORM.

This is NOT a football team. Just a bunch of dudes “playing” historically bad football.

Thanks a lot Sucs! You’ve ruined another Sunday.

  23. 911bucs Says:

    @bucrightoff, 7 games, more like 2 games

  24. Glennongrad Says:

Keep ASJ? The guy that lost us the game? I dont say scrap him but hell no should he be the guy you say we keep.

  25. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

All I know is that if we and the Vikings are tied for first pick, we get it.

  26. Taking back Sunday Says:

Glad I didn’t waste my day watching more crapy football.

  27. Trubucfan22 Says:

And before people start blaming asj, for the loss. Yes he did lose the game, but glennon’s offense did absolutely nothing against a terrible defense. He needs to be held responsible for 25 yards in the first half. Just pathetic.

  28. John Sapp Says:

Bucs should have went for the 2 point conversion, we all knew any amount of time left on the clock was more than enough for the Vikes (or any team not from Florida) to go downfield and kick a field goal to tie. Who are they kidding? When I saw the vikes take over with just under two minutes and I knew here comes our soft @$$ prevent defense.

  29. Incognito Says:

That prevent defense was god awful in that final drive.

  30. Bucnut2 Says:

Relax everyone. This team is going nowhere regardless of the outcome of this game. Let’s hope every week is like this. With the first pick in the 2015 draft….

  31. sho-nuff Says:

“gut the team”….IT DOESNT MATTER…WIMPY OWNERSHIP BREADS WEAKNESS! THIS TEAM SUCKS FROM THE VERY TOP DOWN!….now you know why manu fans HATE them…their team went limp as well when the slumlords bought them as well…..

  32. Patrick Says:

Vincent Jackson, it was nice having you as a Buc. It’ll hurt this team bad when you leave. Truth is, you’re one of only probably 4 guys that deserves a roster spot on this team.

  33. BucFan20 Says:

When it came down to it, Gleen put the team on his back to win the game. And who blew it. Once again our great defense. Don’t try the they were worn out. Our defense sucks.

    @bucrightoff, 7 games, more like 2 games

    ————————————————————————————

Our best (only) chance is against Chicago and Cleveland, other than that I do not see a win.

  35. WalkdaPlank Says:

This team has more holes than golf course, and you people are worried about one player. I want Jameis. But he would fail on this current team. Can’t block, can’t hold a lead. Glennon’s not a superstar, he is mediocre, but he is far from the biggest problem on this team. Right behind the O-line, RB’s, OC, DC, HC, the entire defense save for two players, and the ownership. THEN there’s Glennon.

  36. Nick Says:

I hope the Bucs leave this city. I’m a proud Tampa boy yet I am completely done with cheering for a team that does not want to play for their home town. Please move this team to London or LA. Lovie with all respect….. Please retire….

  37. ElioT Says:

Glennon sucks and so does the whole damn team. Outside of David, McCoy and a few rookies, this entire roster needs to be overhauled.

  38. Architek Says:

I was happy when I saw the score / Lovie doesn’t deserve a win!

    LOLOLOLOLOLOLOL

  39. Bucnut2 Says:

Passthebuc you are right, Glennon would be picked up as a back up qb. I hope we keep him as a back up. This guy is not a starter!

  40. NJBucsFan Says:

Could you imagine how bad we would be if we didn’t have a veteran coach that knows what he’s doing and is a defensive geniues and hand picked all his players on this roster. Man…I would hate to see that team.

Lovie is an overrated coach….fire his arse

  41. MadMark55 Says:

I did not think they could get any worse until now! I have my doubts that GMC will ever get to a playoff game as a Buc. Rebuild after rebuild and they only get worse.

  42. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

Michael Johnson did not get any sacks, but he DID play better.

  43. Ray Rice Says:

    @Joe

All the $hit you have said and I bet you still dont say anything about your man beef fuking up in OT. Yea you know your TE whom you always rave about. Oh! And for all you who kept saying Geraldina was the best…… what happened? He was non-existent again. But his bank roll was tight. Most overhyped DT in the league. And he proved it again today. Hes not worth the $ they paid him.

    ————————————————————————————-

I think our ultra-conservative prevent defense scheme is a waste. Should have sent an extra blitzer. I knew when the Vikes got the ball they were going to drive right down the field on this stupid prevent(?) defense of ours. Smith and Frazier get a chunk of the blame (plenty to go around)

  45. Desanova Says:

No unit shines, but the OL and DB play is incredibly bad. Shame on this team for not making changes during the bye (except the punt returner who muffs and makes bad decisions). That Leslie Frazier is still our DC is ridiculous. We’re going to lose from here on out one way or another, but we could use a team that tries and has a reasonable defense called.

  46. Curse of Gruden Says:

The offense continues to regress. Beaten by another rookie quarterback. Can’t see winning another game this season. Hat’s off to the people that actually go to these games. It’s brutal.

  47. MadMax Says:

@Patrick, yup, Vjax will be traded….probably for a 4th to replace the Mankins trade…..

  48. Vincente Says:

I just don’t understand how it keeps happening. It’s like watching a rerun of the same show every week where the only thing that changes are opponents jersey colors. It’s unbelievable. How? How the heck does this happen!?

  49. Not surprised Says:

    Why are they getting paid?

  50. StPeteBucsFan Says:

Einstein famously said…Doing the same thing over and over again and looking for a different outcome is the definition of insanity.

Well Lovie and Frazier are freaking insane

LOVIE; YOUR FRONT FOUR CANNOT GET TO THE Q.B.!!!!!!! YOU HAVE TO BLITZ TO HAVE A !!! NO DBS IN THE LEAGUE CAN HOLD UP WHEN OPPOSING Q.B.’S HAVE THAT MUCH TIME. TAKE YOUR PHILOSOPHY AND STICK IT WHERE THE SUN DOESN’T SHINE. I’M SICK OF DEALING WITH YOUR INSANITY!!!!

  51. Bucnut2 Says:

    Wow

  52. 911bucs Says:

Sure was hoping with the loss of the Panthers, Falcons, and tonight the Saints we would have pulled this one out to give the team and fans some confidence.

  53. Mikedizzle89 Says:

My heart hurts. Every Sunday I’m feeling like a fool for getting up thinking we are gonna get the win. Time to drain my sorrows in some creepers (aka budlight platinums). So many problems with this team. Absolutely no in dosed pressure and Johnson is pissing me off with his lack of pressure. Arroyo is just do damn bad!!! No creativeness what so ever and dougie fresh looking like a scared hamster out there. I would love to blame this on our qb but when the team shoots themselves in the foot with penalties over and over, I just have to shake my head. Please lord tell me Simms will be our saving grace!!!

  54. ToesOnTheLine Says:

Dear lord the Thursday Night massacre in Atlanta a few weeks ago, the Ravens record as$-whoopin’ at home a couple weeks ago, and now this turd after a bye week. Home much longer do they need to be humiliated by this team’s regression before they cut ties with Lovie and his entire staff!? This is worse than last year when you look at the lack of off field drama as an excuse.

  55. bucfever40 Says:

I’m so turned off by every aspect of coaching and playing with this team, it seems no matter what the Bucs do in the off season, it becomes the same old result. Can’t draft, can’t coach, and can’t play. I never thought I’d see a modern day team (any team) as bad as the ’85-’86 Bucs teams……..that day has come, and the unbelievable irony is it’s the 2014 BUCS! I don’t know what’s worse, the offense, the defense or the damn inept coaching!!

  56. Mdc1965 Says:

Sho-nuff is right. It is weak ownership. Wake up people. 10 years, multiple coaches and GM’s……same owners and no playoff wins. See the common denominator?

  57. WalkdaPlank Says:

    On another note:

    Lavonte David for DPOY!!!

    This man is a trooper.

  58. unbelievable Says:

This was the only other game I saw us winning this season.

How is it that we have truly gotten worse and worse as the season has gone on? Didn’t we just have a bye week to prepare for this sub-par team?

Both our OL and DL suck, but it appears the coaching is even worse.

  59. PhillyBuc Says:

Keep David, Rainey, Evans and McCoy, strike deals for whatever you can get for anyone else, including members of this historic coaching staff

  60. canadianbuc Says:

is it only me or during the game are you constantly asking yourself why the hell can’t this defense intercept the ball?? Only 4 interceptions all season! Teddy was put floaters up there today and no one can catch the damn ball! Banks with an easy pick to ice the game DROPPED! After Banks dropped that I knew they would come back……Remember Gorrers drop against the eagles? Reminds me of that.

  61. Phred Says:

Had the same thought all game watching the Bucs: are you f***ing kidding me?

  62. bucrightoff Says:

Every pick in this draft has to be on offensive and defensive line. We have the two worst trench units in the league by a comfortable margin. Drafting a QB is utterly pointless when we can’t protect him or run the ball worth a crap. Or get any pass rush to force the QB to be uncomfortable.

  63. John Sapp Says:

This will be the year we do not win a single game at home. I do not see any home games that look even remotely winnable.

  64. Broy34 Says:

The Glennon mob…lmao what a joke. All Freeman had to do was stay sober

  65. simeon_97 Says:

It’s not really a home game. Fans don’t go and its filled with colors of the other team. the field just happens to be located in tampa.

  66. The South Floridian Buc Says:

Time to get out the fire Lovie billboards

    ———————————————————————————–

Watching the scores today I thought the same thing, by Monday we would be in a 3-way tie for second place and one game out of first. All they had to do was win today. Beat a team they had two weeks to prepare for. A team that our current DC was the former Head coach of. A team our Current Headcoach faced twice a year for eight years. Everyone was “healthy”, no excuses right? What a letdown.

  68. Nick Says:

Eeeefffffff this team… I’m more embarrassed now as a Bucs fan than when schiano was coach. At least his team could stop a sub par offensive……..

  69. deminion Says:

Awful team I was glad for the L keeps us In draft position just sayin

  70. MadMax Says:

Its going to take two drafts and new coaching to clean up this mess of “paycheck grabbers”

  71. Jeagan1999 Says:

Time to face facts….our entire offensive line needs to be rebuilt, our defensive line is average at best, our linebackers (outside of LVD) are garbage, our secondary is porous, and outside of Evans, none of the WR’s are going to be long term assets to the team. Glennon was mediocre, but it’s hard to tell if it was all because of him, or if the rest of the team dragged him down with them.

We need to start stockpiling draft picks for next year. Trade VJax and Martin for picks. I’ll miss Jackson, but he deserves a shot with a contender. When we get the #1 overall pick, we need to trade down and pick up as many extra picks as we can. This team will need at least a couple of more years to rebuild and we need 10 picks or more each of the next couple seasons to build the quality we need. Bringing in tons of high priced free agents just doesn’t work.

  72. The South Floridian Buc Says:

Who here wants the Bucs to relocate now, and have the NFL start fresh in Tampa, new team, new coach, new culture

  73. fordman61 Says:

Trade Napoleon Dynamite and Josh McCoune and entire offensives line for Johnny Football “Bring back Walter Payton from the dead ” Aaaa trade Bucs radio play by play guy Gene Deckerhoff to ESPN for John Gruden ‘ rehire the rock Star as GM or yeah this off season get some more useless free agents!

  74. MadMax Says:

“just doing enuff to grab my paycheck”

  75. jason77 Says:

L.David should have got that money not McCoy!!!

  76. FowlBall Says:

I’m very disappointed that we lost this game.

  77. heads2skywayaftergame Says:

Went fishing today. Didn’t see any commercials or bad football. Eating snook and grouper for dinner. Great decision!

  78. Mdc1965 Says:

The Glazer kids need to change their name to Culverhouse.

  79. Broy34 Says:

Bucrightoff—–you were right until you said drafting a QB is pointless. False. 2nd 3rd rounders are fine for o lineman. Not 5th and 6th. You can sign good lineman. Period. Collins wldnt have been my 5th target we’ll all agree. Sign freeney draft a dline man and sign Albert. That wldve been the smart move. Not spend big on 3.5 sacks. When coaches are fired offenses switch what stays? The franchise QB. Favre had like 4 coaches.

  80. MadMax Says:

Other than LD (and GMC at times) nobody WANTS IT!

Its called MOTIVATION…..foooooooor COMPETITION…..why do you want to be MOTIVATED to COMPETE?

…its called a win, which 50+ on this roster isnt motivated enough for…..COACHING INCLUDED!!!!!!!!!

  81. Danny Says:

Maybe when they go up to DC in a few weeks the Glazers will ask Raheem if he wants to come back.

  82. StPeteBucsFan Says:

I agree with Bucrightoff. Stockpile picks and then trade down where possible in attempt to find enough players to fill this empty roster.

What’s with this Johnny showboat crap. He can’t even win the starting job in Cleveland for craps sake.

We don’t need a Q.B. until we have a team TO quarterback. How many drops again today. ASF’s fumble killed a first down start from MG8. This team may be soft and stupid and then you mix in choke and you end up 1-6.

ASF’s drop and JOHNATHAN BANKS droppped interception. Can these guys even swallow at this point. What a bunch of CHOKERS!!!

  83. Newbucsfan!!! Says:

everyone here deserves to vent and i won’t defend anybody but they should trade jackson, glennon, martin, gholdson, banks, etc.

  84. Mike J Says:

canadianbuc , same exact reaction I had. As soon as Banks dropped that pick, I thought: “OK, that means the Bucs are going to lose.”

  85. Bill T Says:

That’s now 2 games Lovie’s supposed strength, the Defense, lost late leads. 1-6 would be 3-4. Offensive line is again horrible and play calling terrible. Running up the middle for 1 yard gains does nothing. Look to pass and check down to your running backs produces positive yards!!

  86. Dave Pear Says:

I think we just saw the last of VJax in a Buc uniform.

  87. Bear the Bucs Says:

How did we beat Pittsburg ?? A Haitian witch’s voodoo curse ?

  88. jyraun Says:

Bottom line. …. these buccaneers of 2014 freaking suck! These guys do not have a clue what is going on the football field! And the coaches have not help the situation! This is one of the worst season I can remember of talent evaluation and coaching up players! Can’t wait to get out of 2014 season and hoping for the better in 2015. Wow these Buccaneers make me LMAO!

  89. MadMax Says:

Top paid DT, helluva LB in David, but the rest of our D is complete and utter CRAP! I called it on the game thread after we took the lead….”our D will find a way to lose”

I know, ASJ fumbled in OT….petty compared to what our D allowed with 2 mins left in a WINNABLE game….and what theyve allowed ALL SEASON…..smh

  90. john mason Says:

I have the reason the Buc’s suck so bad…they have Ebola…and not only that they have infected the whole NFC South….every team in the South is puking their way thru the game…did you see the Atlanta-Lions game…Falcons are the Buc’s…Panthers are the Buc’s…now I must just get away from them all..

  91. No One Says:

If there’s ever a team beside the Colts sucking for Luck that deliberately loses game for the #1 pick, this is it.

  92. mike h Says:

any fan left. is a moron if they think this is any thing but the stinking coachings fault. this team all season is not playing pro football. did not agree with the hire of this idiot to begin with these guys are not playing for him.period he s…s the loser would not even hire a offencive coach. after tedford.what a moron. and he is a defensive coach. pleeeeeseee. was a fan since the 80s no more. done sorry about misspells im so f……cking mad can not even focus. now these pin heads will gut this team and its not all the players fault . period.

  93. mike h Says:

and I also agree the owners are idiots. they hired this pin head without even talking to any other canidates. wtf is that still hanging on to what happen years ago. with dungy and crew. well if we still had gruden we probably would already had another ring or atleast be comptetive duh wtf…………

  94. Owlykat Says:

I warned everybody what would happen if Glennon ever saw the field. It has happened and this is what Lovie deserved for not drafting a 1st string QB and anointing the Albatross as his QB of the future. We could have used this losing season to break in a true Franchise QB. Licht is the worst Judge of talent I have seen. Remember in his flawed judgment we had a Win Now Team. L&L had two weeks to fix their team. Instead they brought in a washed up, fumbling shrimp of a returner who can’t keep from fumbling a fair catch and when he ran he faked out no one. Neither Licht nor Lovie made the moves to get the type of MLB they have to have when I told them where to find him and we could get him for free. They deserved the boos they got today! Lovie was in a dream world thinking he could still win our division.

  95. kevin Says:

Trade for johnny football , now ! And use high draft pick for more picks , we need as many as we can get.
