“Practical” Reasoning Says Mike Glennon

October 1st, 2014

In some circles the Bucs are in the middle of a quarterback controversy. Josh McCown, hand-picked by Lovie, has underwhelmed, to be polite. Garish interceptions and wanton disregard for ball security led to three losses in as many games.

Yes, every Buccaneer played like a dog deposit in a front yard that Thursday night in Atlanta.

Enter Mike Glennon. In a hostile environment, in a stadium and city the Bucs have never won in, against one of the NFL’s best, marched the Bucs to a win. That spoke volumes.

Poker player Lovie Smith wouldn’t tip his hand who he would start at quarterback if McCown was healthy enough to play on Sunday. But the “Custodian of Canton” has an idea who that quarterback would be, and it is simple logic, says eye-RAH! Kaufman of the Tampa Tribune.

Indeed. Glennon doesn’t throw the ball away like McCown, and against the Steelers demonstrated he can stretch the field. That’s a good thing.

Also, doesn’t anyone else think it was odd that through three games, we never saw the heralded “Dunkaneers” offense? But once Glennon was behind center, all of a sudden Vincent Jackson and Mike Evans became weapons downfield.

Odd, isn’t it?

  1. P'cola Buc Says:

Due to Tedford’s unfortunate health issues, perhaps the following needs to occur. Arroyo continues to be interim OC…….McCown becomes QB coach/player…..(where there might have already been a future plan for him to be)….Glennon remains starter for as long as it is feasible-to hopefully improve and become #1 QB or excellent trade bait.

  2. Brandon Says:

Only a fool would name the backup the starter for the rest of the season when he’s only completed 1/6 of the audition. Not saying anything is the wisest move.

#1 McCown isn’t close to being healthy so there is no need to say anything.

#2 Glennon could still go all-Kirk Cousins and have a meltdown game or two

#3 The added incentive to go out and “earn the starting job” can only make Glennon prepare and play better.

  3. BFFL Says:

Glennon also gets rid of the ball quickly which makes the pass protection appear better. This is an important point to remind the big doggy because he keeps saying the offensive line played worse for McCown.

  4. Patrick in VA Says:

I’m not concerned about Lovie not deeming Glennon the starter right now. It’s no different than the Panthers acting like Cam could start. As long as Josh is injured then why not use the injury as a means to create uncertainty. Use his reputation for stubbornness to lend credibility to the idea that McCown could start. Even if it gives us a little advantage, I’ll take it against a division rival. When McCown is off the injured list then Lovie can make his proclamation that Glennon is the guy. Plus, should have a few more games behind us by then so he won’t have to sell it

  5. Touch_Down_Tampa_Bay Says:

The debacle of the o-line status since to be on more solid grounds for Glennon to succeed. If Lovie loosen the reins as he did in the 2nd half in Pittsburg the actual up tempo offense may finally come alive.

As we all know it starts in the trenches. The o-line was a work in progress as Mankins came to us late. It should continue to gel and show better running game and protection for the QB. If the d-line shows more improvement Brees may have a hard time dominating us.

We know Jimmy Graham will be a big part of their offense against us. Marcus Arroyo should give them a taste of that too with ASJ.

I like Glennon’s coolness under pressure. He had a decent pocket to work in. The o-line like a lot of players showed up for the last game when needed.

1st quarter is over! Lets build from our last game Buccaneers. Go Bucs!

  6. Captain Stagger Says:

This is something a lot of knew months ago. Unfortunately Joe, Duemig, and Lovie didn’t.

Without Trestman, McCown and Gannon would be nothing.

  7. RastaMon Says:

Just as it is too early ,as it was last year, to proclaim Glennon the answer to Bucs QB quest, it is/was too early to say Glennon is not/never will be a quaility NFL QB. This is IMO what all the emotion is about. Many in the local medias jumped his azz last year forming a damning opinion of his past, present and future. The “Glennon Mob” where never really proclaiming Glennon the answer to all QB woes….they were merely saying WOW….he’s a rookie on a dysfunctional team playing on a roster full of holes. I have an open mind …it’s just really hard to suffer through all the media bashing.

  8. Buccfan37 Says:

Still trying to decide who the starting QB of the Bucs should be. Man, take the blinders off fellas, it could’nt be any clearer. The answer has stared us right in the face, and it’s not the 35 year old “mobile” competitor.

  9. biff barker Says:

The Dunkaneers appearance had less to do with McCown and more to do with Lovie being 0-3. He was desperate for a win.

It’s no bold statement by Ira either. McCown couldn’t play if he wanted to. Declare him healthy and ready and it’s a different story.

  10. ToesOnTheLine Says:

Mike Glennon…making Buccaneers WR’s relevant in both fantasy and real football. Schiano’s Mancrush QB is > Lovie’s Mancrush QB 🙂

  11. BoJim Says:

I hope Lovie realizes we got the ‘Mo’ going and plays Glennon. I see that there are still some stubborn people here too.

  12. StPeteBucsFan Says:

And don’t forget ASJ in that “Dunkaneer” success story. As good as Evans might be I’m still more excited about ASJ. When his ankle is 100% he’s going to be a beast as Joe and Dashon Goldson have already pointed out.

  13. BucDan Says:

The Cannon went toe-to-toe (or arm-to-arm?) with Big Ben in a hostile environment and led the team to victory with the help of great play from the receivers (why the hell did we get rid of L.Murphy in the first place??).

I am ready to see him do it again against Drew “I love being the new face of the NFL and I use Downy to clean my- I DONT GIVE A ^&* I HATE YOUR GUTS!” Brees.

Did we all see something of a spark last year and this past week? YES

Did we see the same from Freeman, Cassell, Fitzpatrick etc.? YES

There needs to be consistency and growth. I will always have confidence in whoever leads the team on the field, but we need to get to the playoffs to truly know.

I also am a firm believer that the true measure of a QB is if they can sling the rock and put up yards and points. Glennon picked up his first 300yd game and I am hoping for many more given the newer passing nature of the game.

    Time will tell.

  14. SAMCRO Says:

I’m with Patrick in VA. It was exactly the point I was trying to say yesterday but not so eloquently put. Why is it so imperative that Glennon be named the starter from here on out? Strategy-wise it forces opposing teams to prepare for both, plus it works as a motivator to keep Glennon from becoming complacent.

Why can’t EYE-Rah see this and leave well enough alone?

  15. MadMax ™ Says:

I know with our secondary, it probably wont happen, but imagine if MG8 did start and he outperformed Brees and won the game…..

  16. mark2001 Says:

” Dog deposit in the front yard”? “Queeeeenie…oh Queenie”.

If you didn’t ever see the movie “the Burb’s”, with Tom Hanks, Carrie Fisher, Bruce Dern, etc., you really missed something…one of the few movies that still makes me laugh my rear off.

    Couldn’t pass on that Joe….

  17. SAMCRO Says:

Oh and by the way Joe, shouldn’t the header have read

    “Practical” Reasoning Says Ira Kaufman”

    [No. – Joe]

  18. Architek Says:

I hope you mobsters are committed to Glennon when he has entire games like the first half – he played better but that first half was pathetic.

    Draft a real franchise QB.

  19. mpmalloy Says:

    # The MGM is your daddy. SAY IT!

  20. mark2001 Says:

Or Architek…he could have more games like the second half.

Frankly, I think there was some adjustment in starting the first game this year. Seems to me that Romo and even Rodgers took a little time to get back into the swing of things. The point is that if he gets more starts, the O line plays like it did in the second half, and he gets his receivers healthy again…Jackson fracture…Evens injury….SR coming off injury…will this guy ever get to play with a healthy set of WR’s? And nobody has mentioned that, that I’ve seen so far. Rodgers, on the other hand, has had a healthy set of WR’s so far this year.

  21. WhatWillis Says:

Anyone who wants to see McCown on the field Sunday is off their rocker, including Lovie. No need to over analyze this. Is Glennon long term?, we need to play him to find out. It’s a good time for it, maybe he’ll get a little more freedom and/or input with no real OC. IMO

  22. Barry Says:

MG8 can make every throw and read any defense. Very impressive for a young QB. Complete playbook is open and available to OC and MG8. The only thing that can hinder his upward progression to elite status, sadly, is Smith’s loyalty to McCown. Now let’s see what Jason Licht is made of!

  23. Architek Says:

    mark2001 –
Those are fair statements and I can’t argue that but the bigger picture is we are parading a mediocre performance as we are desperate as a franchise.

Point being he is not elite and his ceiling isn’t such. It’s good that we won and we needed that win but evaluate him on his overall performance, not one drive because truthfully we should have lost that contest.

As far as variables go, Mr Rodgers and other elite QBs are playing with circumstances on offense (i.e. injuries, lack of talent, poor continuity) but somehow their teams are in position to win.

Again, I am not trying to rain on the MGM party but rest assure if Glennon continues to stare down WRs, throw the ball too low, and struggle early as bad as he did – we wont be in games much like Atlanta. Starting Sunday we will see what he is made of versus Mr Brees. Saints are looking to rebound off of that horrible loss to the Cows.

Temper expectations so the kid can succeed.

  24. Newbucsfan!!! Says:

A lot of close games but with the 1st or 3rd pick in the 2015 draft the Bucs select, JAMIS WINSTON. If Licht is truly a good GM then he will get at least a 3rd for Glennon, Banks, Gholston or Barron. Trade back up into the 2nd round for two picks and select a MLB and CB. In free agency, pick up another DE and some depth players. THE BLUEPRINT!

  25. buc4lyfe Says:

The o line gets just as much credit as Glennon does, they played great and doesn’t matter if they were missing their two best pass rushers and their corners weren’t close to six feet. As you saw in that 20 yard sack Glennon took he’ll be just as awful as josh was without protection and his defense stood up for him in the last moments of that game which is why he has the chance to shine

  26. Barry Says:

Winston is of very low intelligence. Anyone who would want Winston as the face of their franchise are complete FOOLS. Never will he make it as a NFL QB. And I’m an FSU fan. Let him get some other GM HC fired, not ours. He’s not of low intelligence?Really? MG8 = 100% play book. Crab boy = 1 read then run. This is what you want? #Morons

  27. buc4lyfe Says:

    @Barry

Are you hatin’ on Winston or do you have a crystal ball or some voodoo doll to make sure you sabotage his career. Nah maybe your a Tebow fan!!! Take it easy why you mad bro

  28. ddneast Says:

    QB controversy? LOL.
The only controversy is the one the media tries to dorm up to give their stories some readability.
Do you think members of the team are having fisticuffs in the locker rom over who is going to start. Give me a break.
Here’s the deal. Lovie started McCowan because he thought he would give him the best chance to start winning. Judged on last years performance, there aren’t to many people who would disagree with him
That didn’t happen and fortunately for Lovie, McCowan got injured so he was able to replace him in a more diplomatic manner.
Now does anyone rationally think Love is going to sit Glennon down if he continues to perform like he did on Sunday or if the Bucs win their nest two or even go 1-1.
If you do, you need to snap the lid down on that can of paint your sitting nest to,

  29. Richbucsfan Says:

I refuse to watch any more games or attend any. I just check in here during a game. My advice is to not put yourselves through this agony. Do something that will make you happy and your family as well. Bucs will go 1-15. Not worth my time.
