Brooks Says More Tedford Influence Could Come

October 24th, 2014

Tedford rightMr. Derrick Brooks mostly talked about Florida State football and other non-Bucs pigskin matters on his radio show this week.

But the Bucs icon also shared interesting bye-week thoughts.

Yes, Tampa Bay offensive coordinator Jeff Tedford is gone, likely for the entire season, likely forever from football, following his August heart issues.

But Brooks made the point that the Bucs are still working from Tedford’s system and the bye week might have represented a time when the staff got a chance to catch up on implementing plays Tedford didn’t get to late in preseason or early in the regular season.

Remember, Tedford was sidelined hours after the Bucs-Bills preseason game Aug. 23.

Clearly, that put the offense in disarray. Lovie Smith didn’t replace Tedford or hire an advisor. Offensive coaches started working by committee. And it’s reasonable to assume they were scrambling and not necessarily on top of all fine tuning of the playbook, which typically is done on an ongoing basis, especially in a new system.

Notice how the projected and heralded “up-tempo” Bucs offense all but disappeared along with Tedford?

It’ll be interesting to see what new wrinkles might show up Sunday. Frankly, Joe would settle for the offensive line opening a few big holes.

You can listen to all of Brooks with Steve Duemig below, via the WDAE-AM 620 audio player.

How about MORE influence from #55 as acting HC & GM…..after the firing of L&L……Monday

  2. Buccfan37 Says:

Lovie is driving the Bucs like an old Studebaker, obsolete.

  3. DallasBuc Says:

“Notice how the projected and heralded “up-tempo” Bucs offense all but disappeared along with Tedford?”
What up-tempo offense are you referring to? Something cannot disappear if it never existed.

  4. RastaMon Says:

If I…as a die hard Buc Fan don’t “get” Lovie speak as he philosophies about football..imagine what the 2014 NFL players “get”….tuned out…Lovie is TUNED OUT !

  5. Harry Says:

IMO, it was risky enough that neither Tedford OR Arroyo did not have any NFL experience. But at least Tedford had a boat load of experience being a college HC. Now Arroyo is the OC??? What NFL team would even answer the phone if Arroyo called about becoming their OC? Its a damn joke, just like the way the Bucs season is going.

  6. HawaiianBuc Says:

    @RastaMon,

You’re joking right? Seriously? I know things are bad, but that is literally #1 in the list of bad ideas. So you would want to fire Lovie and Licht, and bring in a guy who has never done either? Why, because he was a great player and he has an entertaining show on the radio? Do you understand how ridiculous that is? Brooks is my all-time favorite player, but that’s the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard of. That’s so dumb, if you brought that idea up to Brooks himself, he would slap you right in the face. I’m not even going to get into the reasons why it is so dumb. Apparently these losses are killing your brain cells.

  7. HawaiianBuc Says:

So because you have tuned him out, you believe the players have to? That’s seriously your reasoning? I’m going to please beg of you to continue posting, because it’s literally making my day. I haven’t laughed this hard in a long time. Please continue.

  8. ddneast Says:

Yea, right. Letting Arroyo run this offense is like hiring a nun to direct a porn move.

  9. ForgotAboutDre Says:

All this talk about our offense being so bad, but it’s actually been pretty decent since Glennon has come in.

Tedford being out isn’t the thing making our defense one of the worst I’ve ever seen.

  10. billy buckaroo Says:

I hope they implement some new plays- and a lot of them
Not many of the ones they are using now have required much effort to stop from opposing defenses

  11. Jim Says:

Same old story, They do not want to show anything in the pre-season and
end up showing NOTHING when the season starts.

  12. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @ Hawaiian
    d
    Don’t laugh too hard……might shake Diamond Head…..

But, I agree with you……it might make sense to bring in Brooks as a Linebacker Coach but nothing else….he should work his way like anyone else.

As for Tedford….if there if is even a slight chance he will return, the Bucs are doing the right thing with Arroyo….its painful to watch but the only other option would be to abandon Tedford for another OC and mid-season isn’t a time to do that.

  13. Newbucsfan!!! Says:

Do you guys really want the Bucs to win another 4 or 5 games this season, taking them out of the top 3 or 5 draft picks? I hope the Bucs win at the most 2 more games and the misguided anger/frustration reaches a point never before seen on this site. Then I hope that L&L refuse to give the media any indication on what they may do in the draft. Then when every Bucs fan who loves MG is huddled up around their tv I want to hear the commissioner say “w/ the 1st pick of the 2015 draft the Bucs select J. Winston from FSU”. Oh the heartbreak, the tears and the hate for L&L (the MGM is dead).

  14. ruggyup Says:

So the surgeon says, I left because my assistant was supposed to close the procedure. Now the patient still has an open surgical site and is filled with infection. You think the Bucs are not infected? They are infected and affected and defected. Detected from here.

  15. HawaiianBuc Says:

    @Newbucsfan,

I see where you are coming from, but I personally am not wired that way. I can never cheer for us to lose a game, even if I feel like it’s going to be more beneficial in the long term. As for Winston, I really think if we want him, he’ll probably be available even if we pick in the teens. Way too many red flags, and there just aren’t that many teams desperate for a QB. Most of the bad teams have recently drafted a QB and aren’t going to give up on him yet. The main team I would be worried about would be the Jets.

I am so torn with Winston. i think as far as talent goes, he’s the best QB available since Luck. He has no flaws to his game that I’ve seen or heard of. His flaws are 100% off the field, but they are monumental. I’d be so paranoid with him as our leader, but it may just be worth it. He may be the one guy that could really take us where we want to go. He’s that good IMO. But I will never cheer for us to lose in order to get him. Never.

  16. Newbucsfan!!! Says:

Then I will come to this site to remind every MGM about MG even when I’m asked to stop. The headline here will be ” The Bucs win on Winston run” I’ll say but you know MG could have done that too. Then when the Bucs are 6-2 but Winston throws 3 ints and somebody says Mg would not have done that he had 19 tds and 2 ints as a rookie. I’ll say yeah the Bucs would have been better with MG at the helm then call in on WDAE (Big Dog & Joe) and say why didn’t the Bucs just keep MG with another year he could have been just as good as Winston. And I won’t even LOL

  17. RastaMon Says:

Yo…HawaiianBuc….shove your personal insults up your wifes ***….state your opinions about the state of the Bucs affairs…as I do mine….if you can not make a piont of argument of your own without first insulting the opinion of another…..well then you are a small man….I won’t finish with the obviously easy insult

  18. ToesOnTheLine Says:

Since there are no 100% guarantees that top 5 picks will pan out at the NFL level I think it’s probably better to win as many as you can instead of tanking a season for one player. I would think that would not sit well with an aging vet who might only have one or two seasons left. Probably not good for guys in contract years either. Just win some damn games, plenty of good players in the draft that can be molded to fit schemes by good coaches. Now that is the 5 million dollar question with Lovie…

  19. Hawaiian Buc Says:

    Lmao

  20. pick6 Says:

all 5 guys on the OL doing their job on the same play would be a quantum leap forward. let’s crawl and then start dreaming about walking.

  21. Robert 9 Says:

why is brooks still talking. is he angling for a broadcasting or reporting gigs?

I mean who the hell really cares about this team anymore, even the ones getting paid to play.

when the man running the ship (lovie) has proven incompetent, unwilling to change, unwilling to take responsibility for his mistakes…..what can we expect.

MORE OF THE SAME. SO WHY DO WE EVEN CARE?.

F lovie, I dislike him more than j fro six pack sould glow freeman

  22. pick6 Says:

so sad. here we are in week 7 and for probably the 4th time in the last 6 years debating whether the bucs should tank the season or try to win a few.

  23. SteveK Says:

    Mr. Brooks,

If Glennon “took a step back” against the Ravens, and received a “C-” grade for the Saints game, then WHAT GRADE DO YOU GIVE THE BUCCANEER DEFENSE?

    NO FREE PASSES!

  24. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @ Newbucsfan

Take it from an old Bucs fan……76 Season ticket holder saw us go 0-26 laughing stock to hosting NFC Championship in 79……It feels better to hope your team wins no matter what the draft position…is

It could be argued, for example that Lavonte David is better than Barron yet we picked him in the second round. Look at Dotson…undrafted…

Root for your team to win and root for your GM/Coach to make great picks with what they have.

Tho object of the game is to win not to positoin yourself for the draft.

  25. Buccfan37 Says:

I’m all for winning as many games as possible this season also. I want a win now and the instant gratification that comes with it. I guess an argument can be made that the Bucs appear to be tanking games for a top draft pick, after the effort put on the field so far. Win now, the draft may never get here and bust picks are too easy to misjudge and acquire.

  26. Espo Says:

How Joe Maddon as our new OC. We’ll call it the suicide squeeze offense.

Also, the only draft position we should be playing for is the lowest possible pick. I want to pick as close to 32 as possible every year.

  27. Espo Says:

    *Hire, not How

  28. port richey george Says:

mr. derrick brooks would probably think of making an adjustment to tedford’s system if he were coach. but, I don’t think lovie would have even thought of that idea. I met derrick brooks once when he was speaking at a social function. this was when he was still playing. he is a very nice guy. he spoke to the audience telling great stories about when he got in trouble as a kid and how he learned not to embarrass his family and ancestors. he is quite small physically in person. you would not have thought he played so big for such a small guy. the bucs could sure use imput for the cover 2 from guys like derrick brooks, john lynch and ronde barber. how about bringing in tony dungy as a consultant?

  29. TBFAN813 Says:

It would be just like the Bucs to win just enough games to miss out on a potential franchise QB because they get a top 10 draft pick instead of a top 5. My only concern is that I don’t know if Lovie and his staff would pick the right guy anyway even if the Bucs had the first overall pick.

  30. Newbucsfan!!! Says:

now that sir we agree on.

  31. Newbucsfan!!! Says:

It would be just like Lovie to have Winston right there but he goes with a DE or MLB. But I can hope that he and Light will make the right choice.

  32. buc4lyfe Says:

    @stevenk

Lol let it go already yes the defense is getting an F, does Derrick Brooks really have to come on the radio to say it? The bucs defensive woes were broken down in detail by Steve White, he’s an average quarterback that for an average score why are you still sour, did you see that beat down? OK how about this when… When other teams are scouting free agents they don’t say well if his running back or his offensive line was good then this guy would be a franchise qb, does it work that way or do they look at what Glennon does GLENNON does muss throws he does make bad reads he does buckle under pressure he does it more than elite quarterbacks which makes him a good qb lol accept it and move on. He’s not gonna change the complexion of the the entire team or be the face ofthe franchise, he would have done it already so now that he is the guy let’s sit back and see what he’s got. He’s better than kirk cousins atleast be happy about that

  33. SteveK Says:

    Buvs4lyfe,

Glennon has ayes average QB ball, I agree. I just get really pissed to hear the Big Dog talk crap about Glennon, without even giving the kid a fair shake.

The support JF5 received, and the pass he still gets, pisses me off to no end.

I just don’t think that a Top QB in this years draft is going to make that much of a difference.

I am tired of Glennon getting tore down when the more expensive/better ayers are underperforming worse.

Here’s to hope, just wish the same grade scale was shared and applied to the entire team. It looks like bull spit to say Glennon took steps back against the Ravens when his O-line was downright terrible.

I though after sucking for the last 5 years we’d finally have a winner. I guess the late 90’s early 2000’s for the Bucs is like a meteor, only around every four decades.

  34. sho nuff Says:

…settle down frances…lovies lack urgency to bring in help speaks volumes

  35. HawaiianBuc Says:

    @SteveK,

I actually disagree with you on the whole issue of Freeman getting support and Glennon not. Now if you are talking exclusively Big Dog, then fine. No argument there. Big dog is no different than so many of us on this site – our mind is already made up. If the player you don’t like performs well, he got lucky, or the other team was bad, etc. If the player you do like underperforms, he didn’t have the support he needs, he just had one bad game, etc. I’ll admit that I’m probably guilty of both, but I really try not to be.

That being said, there are tons of people that NEVER liked Freeman. Even his sophomore year, there were a bunch of people that still didn’t like him at all. He had tons of critics. Go back and check the archives if you don’t believe me. Glennon in my opinion gets more support than Freeman ever did. Now he probably deserves it because he’s not a lazy, late-sleeping idiot like Freeman, but he has it nonetheless. My goodness, he has a mob named for him! The kid has gotten as fair of a shake as you can expect a third round QB to get. He’s started over a season already. He’s had opportunities, even though he hasn’t had a good supporting cast. But you know what, great QB’s make the most of what they have. Glennon (for the most part) hasn’t done that. He has looked better this year, but I can’t foresee a situation where he is ever a great QB. I think slightly above average is the best you could hope for (if he is given great weapons around him). I know deep down you agree, even if you don’t admit it.

But I really haven’t seen too many tear him down. I’ve seen almost nobody say he shouldn’t start the rest of the year. That goes for experts and fans. I listen to a ridiculous amount of talk radio, and I just haven’t heard people tearing him down at all. I think people really like him and want him to be successful. I know I do. But unfortunately, I just don’t see it happening. I really hope he proves me wrong.

  36. 911bucs Says:

    Cat fight Rasta vs.Hawaiian

  37. Owlykat Says:

Glennon is a third round draft pick backup QB who is never going to run for touchdowns in a game like Josh did when we didn’t have an All Pro Guard in our OL. If Josh is back and can run for two touchdowns Sunday and passes for two more we can beat the Vikings.

  38. BoJim Says:

newbucsfan. Go away please. You’re gonna bitch and whine every year. Glennon’s got less to work with than he had last year.
