Report: McCown To Miss “Several Weeks”

September 20th, 2014

josh mccown 0920

The way Josh McCown was playing in the first three games of the season, with his reckless disregard for ball security while the losses mounted, it seemed inevitable that Mike Glennon was going to be called in from the bullpen.

It appears that scenario has been pushed up considerably.

McCown injured his thumb on his throwing hand Thursday night and had to leave the game. It seems that injury may knock McCown out of the lineup for some time, reports good guy Alex Marvez of FoxSports.com.

A source told FOX Sports that McCown will undergo a second test on the thumb he injured during Thursday night’s 56-14 loss to Atlanta. McCown is likely to miss “several weeks” while recovering, the source said.

McCown was hurt when banging his thumb on the face mask of Falcons cornerback Robert McClain while following through on a pass. McCown was replaced by Mike Glennon, who was Tampa Bay’s starter in 2013.

Well, Bucs coach Lovie Smith always called Glennon his quarterback of the future. It appears the future is now. Glennon, who was the quarterback of the past but not the quarterback of the present, very likely won’t pull off the same mindless stunts that McCown did.

Time will only tell if Glennon’s play unseats McCown, who is Lovie’s hand-picked quarterback to lead the Bucs back to respectability.

Earlier Friday, Woody Cummings of the Tampa Tribune had a far more positive report on McCown’s status.

Reassess, I don’t wish injury on noone but its not that bad.I’m so happy that we at least get to see what Glennon can do, should have pulled the trigger at least at halftime last game.would that be something with Mike stepped in and went on a crazy win streak what would the haters say then.

  2. Tackleblockwin Says:

Oh my oh my. Let’s go Glennon! Lol.

  3. Jeff78280z Says:

Maybe Lovie has been fingering him too.

  4. Fort Myers Dave Says:

Hey this little bit of news that is coming out at the most convenient time (late Friday night) is actually positive for the Bucs org for the following: 1. It gives Lovie an easy out from that asinine statement that McNown is still the starter, now he can hype Glennon w/o losing too much more face/respect. 2. Glennon might be able to do something with the offense, let him work Tedford’s playing schemes and see what happens in Pittsburgh assuming that Tedford is actually allowed to call plays instead of a QB coach who last call plays for a pathetic Southern Miss team that couldn’t move the ball out of a soggy paper bag…. I am sorry McNown is hurt but its time to see Glennon and if injury is the only way to make these ****ing stubborn coaches change their minds and get of the track to 0-16 then so be it.

  5. Incognito Says:

Damn now Im probably going to have to sell my SB tickets.

  6. Architek Says:

And this changes the season how???

  7. DallasBuc Says:

All one needs to know is that it no longer matters

  8. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Says:

Wow, this looks like God doing for us, what Lovie would not do, like make the changes he promised.
We need to see what we have in Glennon, and in my mind, he gives us a much better chance to win.

  9. WalkdaPlank Says:

    Unleash The Giraffe!!!!

  10. LUVMYBUCS Says:

Put Josh on I.R and… slap a clipboard in his hands.

    Sign either

    • B.J. Daniels QB Seattle/South Florida
    • David Fales QB Chicago/San Jose State

    Lets keep it moving

  11. The Buc Realist Says:

Josh Freeman calls Josh McCown, ” Don’t go to the gun range while your trying to heal your hurt finger, it won’t help!”

  12. KillingMeSmalls Says:

Really Joe who cares if McCown can’t play? We already knew that!!!

  13. bosscantworkmytoehurts Says:

I got to miss work too. I stubbed my toe! I still get paid right?

  14. Richmondbucsfan Says:

I think glennon will take better care with the ball, but it won’t make the offense any more effective. Our play calling is very pedestrian. Very conservative. In the three games, I remember them going for a pass over twenty yards like three times. Maybe tedford will stretch the field better?

  15. Buccfan37 Says:

It’s confusing, Is McCown playing or not. At least Glennon can see downfield better.

  16. Chef Paul Says:

Feel bad for McCown. Excited for Glennon. But Glennon still has to get the job done. If he wants to unseat McCown he has to play better than he did in Preseason. His preseason performance wont be enough for the stubborn one to make the switch permanently.

  17. robert8 Says:

sure, he’s that hurt….like Martin was that hurt and could not go…

the BS/spin machine is friggin hilarious.

lovie should run for president, cause he wouldn’t tell it like it is if he had too.

he’s benched as was martin. but keep throwing your top quys under he bus lovie to cover your a$$

my guess is Frasier is the next feel tire tracks, but he really does suck!

  18. Hawk Says:

In his long career, McCown has yet to play a full season, and (in his last contract) it appears as though he never will. While I wasn’t thrilled with the way he was brought in, I had hoped he would play well and make it through the entire season. While I like Glennon, and believe he can be an excellent QB, I have no delusions that changing QBs is going to turn this into a winning team. Looking at the remainder of the schedule tells me that the Buc’s best chance of ‘not losing’ will come on 10/19.
I wish Glennon well, but I don’t see this team being any better for a young QB than last year’s version.
Like Bonzai said, in another post, if the players stick together, they may start playing better by mid-season. It may just be that Lovie changed too much, too fast. Hopefully, the Atlanta game was an aberration and the team will get back to playing close games.
But be careful, the “Light at the End of the Tunnel”, is sometimes a train coming from the other direction.

  19. Tampabaybucfan Says:

We have much greater problems than QB…..our playcalling constantly 1st & 10 run up the middle…..puts the QB in a bad position because it is almost always 2nd & 10 or worse.
We need better play out our recievers. Also, I think our gameplans haven’t been very good. We need to really open up our offense.
I do think we need to see what we have in Glennon…we will probably have a very high draft pick and most of the other teams that needed a QB addressed that last year.
    McCown never wa

  20. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Mc Cown never was the long term answer & apparently isn’t the short term answer at QB either.

  21. buc4lyfe Says:

Lol it’s funny some people still need to see what Glennon has. How blind are you really? Were screwed no matter who the quarterback is and this mgm thinks he’s gonna come in and light up the league with single digit passing yards per attempt. This season is over we’ve got 3 qb’s that won’t throw downfield and I was screaming for Vick or Sanchez they would easily out anyone on our roster, difference between Glennon and mcclown… Glennon will take care of the football and no chances. 19 TD’s 9 int’s great but he’ll never throw for 3000 yards even if he had 16 games plus 4 preseason combined

  22. CC Says:

The Lovie/McCown otherwise know as McLovin project is over.

  23. CC Says:

    Team M cLovin was Superbad.

  24. Nate_tweetz Says:

Frankly, I’m not excited to hear about either of these dudes starting. However, if Glennon does start, it speeds up the process of evaluating him and definitively coming to the decision that we need to draft a QB with the #1 overall pick we’ll have next year.

  25. Name Required Says:

Which one of these guys can get us closest to Mariotta?

  26. robert8 Says:

the DBs must bump the receivers off the line or at least play closer to stop the free 10-15 yrd passes

the LB’s have to stop biting on play action and giving up the middle for easy passes,

Gohlston should get the start at DE and Foster should stay on the bench. That’s my D opinion and they need to gel, but I think they can hold if the play calling gets better.

MG is not the savior, but he will give the team a reason to fight and he sees the field and audibles better. He likely also knows this is his time to determine if he is a career backup or and NFL QB and will be fired up to light it up. I see a lot more success coming in the passing game.IF…IF the playcalling improves or glennon audibles to the pass on 1st down more. no more run, run, pass please

  27. pewterpirate99 Says:

It’ll be good to see what Glennon can do. But that’s not going to matter that much because the defense, other than McCoy and David, BLOWS DOG!!!! Everyone else on this defense SUCKS!!! I’m so disgusted with this defense and the so called turn around Lovie was going to make in it. In order for the Tampa 2 to work like a fine oiled machine, you MUST have the horses to run it. And this team DOES NOT have them. They have two, McCoy and David. They need a lot more than that. Lovie of all people MUST know that.

  28. ToesOnTheLine Says:

Well at least Bucs WR’s will become somewhat relevant again. Ashame that the Bucs D will probably allow any decent QB to put up 30+ every week 🙁

  29. ToesOnTheLine Says:

Much as I bust on the guy I do feel bad for McCown to lose a starting gig to injury. That said this is the best thing for the Bucs…the season isn’t over, but it is apparent to all that Lovie overestimated a lot of things including his own coaching abilities. Best to see what the Bucs have on the roster that fits whatever the hell it is Lovie is trying to do so the Bucs have a better idea of what the draft needs will be. Might even win some games along the way from Glennon not going into Matt Shaub/Josh McCown pick 6 mode

  30. B.D Says:

whos going to be the back up now since Glennon starts? I need to know so I can start crying for him to be the starter!

  31. Luther Says:

@LUVMYBUCS BJ Daniels is NOT an NFL QB. I wasn’t a fan when he was the USF QB.

  32. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

David Fales was cut by the bears last week.

  33. Aceofaerospace Says:

Playoffs are over for us. I want Glennon to play every snap for the next 13 games. Either prove Lovie right or fall completely on your face and hopefully force an off season move. I don’t care which at this point. This season is over. Anything less than the playoffs is just a game. I cannot believe I am already looking at the draft in September. That’s what an 0-3 start and a nationally televised bitch-slapping does to a fan. These players, for the most part, only know losing. 0-3 does not change that mentality.

  34. Jeagan1999 Says:

Josh McCown had all off season, all of training camp, 4 preseason games and 3 regular season games to get all the starters reps. Now it’s time to let MG8 show what he can do. He might be a little rusty at first, but I’ll bet he still makes fewer mistakes than McCown did! Now I’m actually excited to watch another Bucs game! Didn’t think I’d be saying that after Thursday nights debacle.

  35. mac Says:

Oh no! I hope the Bucs are able to still compete at a high level without McCown at QB….

    Lol…

  36. Mathius Says:

Looks a early similar to last year already. I hope the Bucs stick it out and try to create continuity with the coaching staff and players. The firing has to stop with someone!

I think the fan base could be positive and supportive if L&L would come out and told every one this is a “preseason” year and hope it leads to a better team in the future. It would be awesome if they threw every one under the bus and blamed regimes of the past only to explain that they’re building from the ground up.

Why does Lovie show McCown preferential treatment? Rainey fumbles, he is pulled. McCown throws pick 6, lets see him on the next drive. I am starting to believe that Lovie doesn’t trust the rest of the offense and doesn’t want to put Glennon in a crappy situation if he doesn’t have to. Maybe Lovie knows McCOwn will lose but wants to figure out the Oline and RB positions before he inserts the future. Kinda like taking the station wagon to Walmart but driving the Ferrari to Flemming’s

  37. Kevin#1 Says:

I don’t know what McCown would have looked like with Teford calling plays. It would be nice to know before he is just thrown out for good. He obviously did well in chicago under that system. With that said Evans needs to improve and Vincent Jackson….well he is just down right disappointing. Last year he had a dropping the ball issue and it has only gotten worse. Hopefully the whole team get’s a boost emotionally with Tedford back next Sunday. I have already decided if Tedford is not calling ALL of the plays that I am not watching the game. AND…….if Lovie continually rolls out the zone defense I will turn the game off.

this organization has refused for one reason or the other, to put out a competing team, let alone a winning program since the superbowl days and gruden. we, the fanbase, have been humiliated and the laughing stock of the league for years and years. and still the ownership goes about daily business like all is good in the kingdom! and for them it is good, they make huge amounts of money from their TV deals, merchandising, concessions etc. I say it is high time, we the fanbase put the pressure on them and boycott the next home game! that’s correct just stay home and stop buying their merchandise. let us put some pressure on the glazers, remember they actually work for us.the fans and let’s see how they like to be embarrassed when there34 is only 10% occupancy at tampa stadium at the next home game!!! think they will get the point? spread this on this site, twitter, facebook etc if you all agree. and want to send a message to the glazers that this will not be tolerated any longer.

  42. MadMax ™ Says:

Glad Glennon will get some starts….may as well….but with Frazier making these D play calls and most of the D playing like a bunch of scrubs, it wont matter.

Now go grab Connor Shaw from Clevelands practice squad!!!!

  43. mpmalloy Says:

    Here we go.
If the the Cannon lives up to his name and the MGM is lucky
then we’ve seen the last of McCown.
Otherwise it will just be more of the same with the
exception that the MGM will have to publicly eat crow.

  44. mpmalloy Says:

Trade McCoy and David and Rainey for Derek Anderson.
    Its our only hope.

  45. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

    Architek Says
“And this changes the season how???”

    Exactly.

The rest of the team is still a mess. Mike Glennon came within a hair of throwing 3 picks Thursday night. To be fair, the rest of the team had already laid down, but still.

I hope he lights it up, but I doubt it is even possible at this point. Lovie has his work cut out for him.

I will say this though…now we’ll find out if the MGM is right or not. Within two games, they will either be obsessively bragging, denying they were card carrying members, or making a LOT of excuses. As to the excuses, they will point at the McCown apologists, however, they don’t really exist. Most people that don’t think Glennon is the answer ALSO do not think McCown was either.

Mike Glennon playing now is probably the worse thing for his career. Unless Lovie Smith can make the rest of the team play well, Glennon is going to look bad, even if he isn’t.

On the other hand, if Lovie DOES get the rest of the team to produce, Glennon will have his chance to pull off a Tom Brady (like when he backed up Bledsoe). If he gets that fair shot, then its all up to him to make the most of it.

He will have to play much smarter though, and the WRs will have to start fighting for the ball.

  46. buc4life24 Says:

Lets see what we have in Glennon now so we dont pass up on a qb next yrs draft if he doesnt make progress. Does no good for our future sitting behind McClown!!

Im not an MGMer, but lets see if he truely posseses Franchise QB material or move on!!

  47. Jeagan1999 Says:

Josh McCown was anointed the starter from day 1. He got all the first team reps in the mini camps, training camp, 4 preseason games and the first 3 weeks of the regular season. First team reps means he got at least 70% of the work so far. Before some of you keep repeating your mantra of “Glennon is not the answer”, why don’t you let the kid get a few weeks of playing time under his belt so he can get comfortable and show what he can do! At this point in the season there’s no sense in going back to McCown anyway….so let’s find out if MG8 can really be a top level signal caller, then we will know how to use our top 5 draft pick next year! Until then, cut the kid some friggin slack and be thankful you don’t have to watch a 35 year old career journeyman/backup make the same painful mistakes over and over again!

  48. Trubucfan22 Says:

I didn’t think it could get worse, until they announced Glennon will be starting. This is a new all time low. Now there really is no reason to cheer for this team. Captain check down, mr. Overthrow, dr. Throwawayonforthdown. Dude really is the worst QB in clutch situations and has NEVER even beat garbage time prevent defenses. It’s sad. I’m sad. This franchise is going nowhere. I’ll hope for the best and that Glennon can right the ship, but my expectations are at an all time low for this team. We will be lucky to win 1 game behind this defense and offense. We had a chance with McCown in, but with Glennon we basically have no chance.

Also those who are still schiano apologists are just crazy. Schiano was not a good coach. The players said it. If you don’t have the players support then you will never win. Unfortunately for Lovie if this crap continues he will lose the players too. We need a breath of fresh air in Tampa. I really dwell on missing out on chip Kelly. His offense would have made the bucs relevant again…

  49. Hawk Says:

    Trubucfan22 said…
“We had a chance with McCown in,…”
Really?!?! A chance to set a Buccaneer record for pick-sixes in a game? A chance to set a record for an upside down Int/TD ratio? Just, exactly, what ‘chance’ are you referring to? I must have missed McCown’s ‘upside’ in the last three games. I think the offense did too.
Did you see something in McCown’s three games that gives you hope? I’m not saying that he is THE reason that the Bucs lost those games. But I will say that it looked a lot like he threw gas on the fire.

  50. Rob Says:

Sorry you’re hurt Josh. By all means, don’t risk aggravating the injury by rushing back too soon. These fingers injuries can take years to fully heal and sometimes even Waiver Wires. Do what’s best for yourself and the Bucs.

  52. Couch Fan Says:

I dont expect anything to change. Lovie seems just as stubborn if not more so than Schiano. Its tough living a Bucs Life. Wish we could hire a coach with a clue.

  53. Trubucfan22 Says:

Well hawk, McCown has 1 whole pick 6 this season. I’m pretty sure that is far off from the record.

I’ve seen 2 games from McCown that looked better than any of the 13 games Glennon played last season. We actually converted on third down with McCown at QB. Glennon had the worst 3rd down conversion rate in the nfl last season. 3rd down is the most crucial down, you can’t sustain drives without getting third downs. That is my biggest problem with Glennon. In clutch situations, 3rd/4th downs and 4th quarter, he was abysmal. The numbers don’t lie.

  54. Hawk Says:

    @ Trubucfan22

HE WAS A ROOKIE. Good Lord, are there really people out there that believe a rookie QB is supposed to put up numbers like a ‘seasoned veteran’?
And it’s not just the pick-sixes. An INT in the ‘red zone’? And it wasn’t even 3rd (or 4th) and long with the game on the line. McCown has the ‘Dunkaneers’. What did the rookie have?
If you believe that McCown’s first two games were better than “any of the 13 games Glennon played last season”, then there is certainly no point in continuing this discussion. I hope you will, at least, agree that we disagree.
