Your Starting Right Guard: Kadeem Edwards?

August 5th, 2014

KadeemmugSo when you’re seriously guard challenged like the Buccaneers are, where do you place a nasty, aggressive rookie who has a lot to learn but has the tools to be successful?

The answer is right guard.

Former Bucs defensive end Steve White, who was a spring 2014 coaching intern on Lovie Smith’s staff, served up his predictions for the Tampa Bay’s starting guard slots yesterday during an appearance on WHFS-FM.

White said he believes Jamon Meredith will start at left guard, primarily because of his experience and the critical nature of pass blocking on the left side of the line.

At right guard, White said, he believes fifth-round rookie Kadeem Edwards will get the nod.

The right guard, White explained, will get more help from the center and Edwards is “a very aggressive kid” who White believes can be successful in the running game and develop well. It’s worth noting White’s the same guy who believes veteran right guard Oneil Cousins isn’t worthy of watching on Sundays.

Edwards primarily has been working at left guard in preseason, and Joe has noted that offensive line coach is all over him regularly. It’s clear to Joe that the Bucs have high expectations and are trying to squeeze success out of the rookie from Tennessee State quickly.

It’ll be interesting to see how the Bucs line up Friday, and who gets the reps and where. There are plenty of guards rotating in an out now. That’s what happens when you have questionable talent at two positions.

He will be brought up to speed quickly by practicing against GMC…..nobody is going to look good against him.
I still think we will pick up another Guard through FA……someone will cut a player we want.
We could also trade a RB for a Guard…..there is a likelyhood of a RB going down in preseason (even one of ours)

Pineapple McCown is the key. His quick read and release will assist the line as Edwards fills his shoes with experience. EDS will also lend a helping hand to Edwards.

Having so many weapons is hard for me to be concern. At least we don’t have a guard playing with one leg. Warhop will have them ready to execute.

When it comes to Friday’s game I expect Warhop to experiment with different combinations at Guard. Now is the time to see what they got. It should be interesting. Because of that I’m not expecting fireworks from our o-line. It’s all good though.

I wonder how the conversations between White and Cousins went at the water cooler.

Edwards needs to build his strength up to NFL standards first like Chase Daniels has done over the last year after coming to the Bucs from a small college like Edwards. Start Daniels and Omameh at Guard and keep Edwards as their backup and send him to the weight room!

Trade Mike James and late pick for a Guard

So you want us to start a marginal backup QB at RG?

  7. Espo Says:

Booger was also impressed by him. If anyone is qualified to praise an offensive lineman, I’d say it’s a defensive lineman.

  8. Espo Says:

Glad you caught that Brandon. Apparently Daniels is on roids.

Onameh (SP) and Edwards will be our starting guards IMO… Meredith with swing.

Would love to see Daniels worked into the rotation at guard.

Funny, I was wondering the same thing. Its ok if Joe says that, or K-Rah, but this is one of the teams (intern) coaches. I doubt that was well received.

I still advocate picking up Richie Incognito. He is cheap – can sign for vet min, He is a very good guard. He can be kept on a very short leash. I have followed MIA for years, and Richie got blamed for more of the problems than he caused (admittedly he contributed a lot of it – I am not saying he was innocent). When he first came over to MIA, he was a model citizen bc he was on a short leash back then.

We have enough vets in the line to keep him in place. If he doesn’t behave, cut him loose.

@harry, i think even if Lovie wanted incognito on his team (i can’t imagine that he does), that is one move i am certain the Glazers would block. outside of Dolphins’ owner stephen ross, i can’t think of another ownership group more worn out by off the field news stories than ours.

And why do so many people say ‘Oh, just trade x player for a guard’? Player for player trades very rarely occur in the NFL. When they do, there’s almost always a draft pick included in the package and do we really wanna lose out on any more draft picks?

  14. Harry Says:

    @pick6,
I can’t argue with what you say. Incognito is just so tempting for a team in the situation we are in (i.e. desperate!), and he is good.

People say we can pick up a FA, or trade. Its just not that easy. For example, the first place we can expect the possibility for a guard to be cut would be from a team who drafted an OG in 2014. Well, only 3 OGs were taken in round 4 and above: by the Texans (rd 2), Raiders (rd 3) and Panthers (rd 3). As far as I can remember, none of those teams had a very good Olines – I know CAR didn’t. So my point is, an OG coming from one of those teams is not going to help you much.

    Our choices are very limited.
