Bucs Facing Ugly History

August 20th, 2014
The Bucs are on the verge of a Ray Perkins watermark.

The Bucs are on the verge of a Ray Perkins watermark.

Joe will be the first to tell anyone that preseason is largely pap. Garbage. Glorified practice — at regular season prices, no less!

Joe watches Bucs preseason games because it is his job. That is the only preseason football Joe will watch.

So given that qualifier, for those who enjoy trends, the Bucs are on the verge of pulling off something that hasn’t happened since the halcyon days of Ray Perkins. If the Bucs lose to Buffalo this weekend, the third preseason game, it will be the first time since 1988 that the Bucs lost their first three preseason games.

Sourpuss Perkins coached the Bucs then — his second season at the team’s helm — and the Pewter Pirates finished a woeful 5-11 that year.

“Woeful” and “Perkins” seemed to go hand-in-hand with the Bucs.

This is not to say if the Bucs lose they will mirror a Perkins’ era team. Again, preseason means squat. Still, it is certainly not the way anyone would hope the Lovie Smith administration would launch.

I am not going to call Joe a liar, but I would be very surprised to hear that Joe did not watch Johnny Football ( I mean the browns ) games. Very Surprised!

  2. Hawk Says:

Wins and losses, during preseason, mean nothing, zero, nada, squat. During this time, any coach who has ‘wins’ as their #1 priority is going to suffer for it when the real games begin. Lovie doesn’t seem, to me, to be too concerned about the losses. Let us just hope he is REALLY concerned about the offense.

    Very Surprised!

Be prepared to be surprised. Not one play. Not one. Don’t even pay attention to “highlights.” Waste of time.

  4. Jack Burton Mercer Says:

The Redskins famously went 0-4 in two of their Super Bowl seasons in the 80’s. Not saying we’re like those Redskins….

  5. The_Buc_Realist Says:

wow, I am shocked, not interested? too painful to watch? or just mad at what could have been? or waiting for “Real Football”

  6. FLBoyInDallas Says:

The Pewter Pirates didn’t finish 5-11 that year. But the Orange Creamsicles certainly did.

  7. DallasBuc Says:

I haven’t heard anyone complain about losing the preseason games. Those of us upset by these games are unhappy about the play on the field, especially by the 1st and 2nd teams. If you are going to hire a career loser QB and dump the vet oline for a bunch of backups and non-names, they better show us something positive. This is not complicated.

    Dallas buc,

You are 100% correct. No one cares about wins and losses.

We are watching Pre-Season games to see how well each player and position are performing.

If our secondary gives up 8 touchdowns but is only burned by a perfect throw and perfect catch all within perfect coverage. We don’t care. That’s football.

However if the receiver is open by 5 yards, this is a problem.

Again another article bashing the Pre-season.

Pre season is just Fore-Play to the regular season. And everyone likes foreplay.

I would watch 10 weeks of Pre-Season. I would watch every single practice. I would watch pretty much anything to do with football.

3 more weeks before the real fun begins.

Pre-Season is 4 weeks before Christmas for adults.

I hate watching us lose….even in preseason……I sit on edge hoping we don’t have any serious injuries…I’m not too concerned with the win/loss…..but very concerned about how we play….and I’m not impressed so far except for our run defense which is very stout.
We still aren’t putting much pressure (as a team GMC excluided) on the QBs and we still aren’t protecting ours. So….we have been weak in the trenches thus far.
I’m not to concerned with our pass defense (have some injuries)…..and I think we will tighten it up considerably and get many turnovers….
Special teams actually look pretty good and now that Brandon McGee is injured the holding penalties will cease.

I would like to see them come out playing hard and trying to win this game

  11. Tom Edrington Says:

Regardless of what one may thing about preseason, when you are up against a team like Buffalo, a real mess of a team, one would think that even if the Bucs don’t game plan, they would be able to demonstrate that they have been players than Buffalo and thus squeeze out a victory.

    Does that make any sense?

  12. LUVMYBUCS Says:

Steelers just waived NT Al Lapuaho. Hopefully Lovie gives the kid a tryout

  13. BFFL Says:

I’m very pleased with the 1st string units. The guard situation is being way overblown. McCoy is playing at such a high level that I believe he will singlehandely win games early for the Bucs until the offense has a chance to start gelling.

  14. Joe Says:

    waiting for “Real Football”

    Real footbawl, pod’nah.

  15. Joe Says:

Joe likes to use the analogy of “foreplay.”

    Or teasing.

Don’t worry Joe. As it pertains to John Manziel, you’ve missed nothing. There have been no “high”lights, but many lowlights. Unless you consider the Redskins getting in John’s simple, fragile mind a highlight.

  17. Celly Says:

the 0-16 Lions went 4-0 in the preseason.

    nuff said.

  18. Harry Says:

Foreplay? Nawww. I take my foreplay very seriously, but not preseason football.

Funny you brought up that we maybe 0-3 after this week bc I was thinking about that. It doesn’t phase me in the least. If Schiano were coaching, or Rah, it probably would. But I have more trust in Lovie than to see our preseason games as a reflection of what is to come.

  19. biff barker Says:

Preseason is a somewhat of a loss for this years offense since our playbook is dumbed down.

  20. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

It doesn’t matter to me. I know Lovie will turn this team around.

  21. Orca Says:

Don’t care if they go 0-4 in preseason.

  22. Finishers Says:

what was are preseason record when we won it all?

  23. Touch_Down_Tampa_Bay Says:

Joe will watch Johnny Football when the Bucs visit the Browns…

  24. RastaMon Says:

Hey…ray had a HUGE advantage…he had three pad practices a day to get reay for the season….

  25. Touch_Down_Tampa_Bay Says:

    @finishers – 3-1

  26. Ladyfan Says:

I doubt we are going to have a good team this year. Too many new moving parts to pull it together by opening day. Next year should see us plugging in some holes maybe drafting a first round QB ( not Winston from FSU. he has character issues I don’t trust). Beef up oline. Hang on to best of this years team and then maybe we’ll have a chance. Neither McCowan or Glennon can take us to the promise land. I don’t get Lovies vision on McCowan other than a “comfort level”. That’s my 2 cents.

  27. Buc-Naked Says:

Would love to know what the preseason record was for every super bowl team (winner and loser)

  28. Destinjohnny Says:

Hugh was the problem not ray

  29. Buccfan37 Says:

Sourpuss Perkins, now that’s an understatement.
