McCown Won’t Force His Leadership

Joe talked about leadership with McCown at One Buc Palace today

Starting quarterback Josh McCown talked about his approach to the new Bucs season this afternoon at One Buc Palace.

And Joe liked how McCown explained that his lauded leadership ability doesn’t mean he’s forcing anything or making speeches just because all eyes are on him as the starter out of the gate.

Things, for McCown, are just like they were last season in Chicago, where he backed up Jay Cutler. Joe asked McCown whether he behaved differently as a guy who was looked to in the locker room for leadership on Day 1.

“No. I try to be the same,” McCown said. “I think on any team, I need everyone to be themselves. And so for me whether it’s being a backup quarterback or a starter, just be yourself. Just bring whatever your gifts are and talents, and bring that to our team and that will help us be better. So I don’t feel like there’s anything different this week than there was the first week of the offseason program in Chicago.”

McCown went on to say he’s learned from experience that leaders come from all places on a team, whether it be the No. 4 receiver or anyone down the depth chart. Every player, McCown said, as the potential to bring a significant impact to the locker room.

As for leadership style, McCown said leaders have to be “genuine.” If not, he said, they’ll lose out.

“Pretty soon you’ll look up and nobody will be following you,” McCown said.

i really like McCown and believe he will be a great mentor and role model for our young drafted QB. I don’t think the Bucs can win a playoff game with McCown that being said doubt you can find a better dude to share his experiences on and off the field.

McCown and Glennon will get us through the yr just fine No QBs in this draft are worthy of a top 15 Pick

  3. Barry Says:

Pay attention to what’s happening here. McClown is your starting QB. It’s moves like this that haunt L.Smith. You go with a old career back-up instead of a young ROY.

I’m warming up to the idea of McCown. He comes across as a mature level headed guy.
    Why not?
We started last season with the polar opposite under center.
    No mas por favor!

with our new O line, McCown and Glennon will shine!

    @Barry,

ROY? Um, no… he was not the ROY. He was rated the best rookie at his position out of a poor class of rookies.

I like Glennon but not sure he has “it”. He may not get a chance to show it. Lovie did say he wanted 4 QBs in camp. If that’s not smoke, expect one to get drafted and Glennon to get traded.

This dude tried to say glennon was the rookie of the year. Hahha did he even receive a vote for rookie of the year?
