Josh McCown Is No Schiano Man

Bucs QB Josh McCown likes his teammates to “make plays.” This term irked Greg Schiano.
Joe almost feels for Bucs starting quarterback Josh McCown. The guy is just about talked out. He has done countless interviews, both locally and nationally, discussing the Bucs offense, despite the fact he really can’t talk about the offense, under orders from the Bucs, of course.
There is very little McCown can say until he has a few more practices under his belt. But one thing he did say today at One Buc Palace was, in so many words, McCown wouldn’t have been a Schiano Man.
Former Bucs commander Greg Schiano had a pet peeve when players or members of the fourth estate talked about “making plays.” He felt that mentality was irresponsible. That people “making plays” means they weren’t doing their job; they were trying to do too much, thus, being undisciplined.
It is apparent McCown doesn’t share that philosophy. McCown noted that some Bucs receivers not named Vincent Jackson would be solid additions to the roster because of their ability to do what rubbed Schiano the wrong way.
“We have some good players,” McCown said about the Bucs offense. “As a quarterback, that is all you can ask for is guys around you to make plays. For us, whether it is Doug [Martin] or Bobby [Rainey] or with Vincent [Jackson] on the outside and Tim Wright and there some guys who made plays in the NFL and have for a long time. So I absolutely like the guys in the huddle.”
This would have driven Schiano nuts and Joe suspects many of the new faces on the offense would never have found their way to One Buc Palace had Schiano still been here.
While Joe gets what Schiano meant when he grew flustered over players “making plays,” if a player only tries to do the ordinary, that’s probably what that player will be, and so to his team.

“Making plays”. Let’s define it for discussion sake. Does it mean making the expected block, catch, run or tackle, or does it mean “making something out of nothing” plays. These kind of play are why Joe loves Johnny Football.
The truly gifted player is the one who can “make a play” when there is nothing available and the play that was called is a bust. I’ll take those kind of players!!!

Designed plays often don’t play out as planned…..by “making plays” good players improvise when this happens and make something happen.
I believe this is part of the reason we were 32nd offensively last year and in particular I think it affected Glennon….if something designed wasn’t there….he just threw it away or ate the ball and was sacked. Schiano’s influenced him negatively.
I think in the case of Johnny Football….there might be a bit too much improvisation.

I agree with Schiano. The offensive always knows exactly what the defense will do, and vice versa. So no need for players to make plays.

Doing your job makes you average. Going above and beyond makes you above average. Doing that consistently makes you great. What kind of team do we want? One that just does its job? Or one that excels, and does so consistently? After Raheem and Schiano I think we all know the answer to that.

Everything about Schiano screams insecurity. I’ve encountered this personality type many, many, many times. These people believe that nothing good will come of anything that doesn’t originate from them. Good riddance! I’m already well on my way to forgetting the last 5 years, and especially the last 2.

No, Schiano’s biggest problem was his inability to adapt to his players strengths because he was a slave to the system and the process.

WOW. I kow Schiao is a discipine guy and the BUCS needed that to a degree, but you need to know how to reign it in there Greggy. Hell, Coughlin did. Not liking the term “making plays” seems ridiculous to me. That is ALL I want WRs and DBs to do.

McCown has never, in his 13 yr career, thrown for more yards or td’s in a season as Glennon did in 13 games as a rookie. FWIW

hmmmm….i’m not sure peyton manning “makes plays” by that definition. there is little to no improvisation in that man’s game and he is not a guy who counts on his teammates to do extraordinary things to get points on a given drive. both he and the guys he delivers the ball to are doing exactly what they agreed to do before the snap on almost every play.

@biff barker: Schiano’s “inability to adapt to his players strengths because he was a slave to the system and the process.” is because (imo) that while at Rutgers, he had mediocre players. Mediocre players NEED to be pushed to their limit, as they (typically) don’t have the ability to push themselves to be good, much less great.
Schiano’s downfall (again, imo) was brought about by not knowing how to treat people with respect. No matter what one does in life, knowing how to effectively communicate is essential. Especially when one is in a position of superiority. People who believe that their way is the only correct way tend to struggle with relationships, whether they be personal or professional. Again, these are typical signs of an insecure personality.
With regard to “blown assignments”: Many of the assignments that the players were given were among the worst in recent memory. Joe has harped on this many times, but I can still vividly recall first seeing #94 in pass coverage and hoping that it wouldn’t become a trend. Sure enough, time and time again, the guy who came into the league as a bull rusher was seen stumbling about while trying to learn how to cover a guy 80 pounds lighter and twice as fast as he is. smdh.

Plenty of players picked up the game later on in their years.
It’s not like McCown has been a starter for 13 years and couldn’t match the output.
