Joe Talks McCown And Free Agency Ups & Downs

March 13th, 2014

Joe sat down for his weekly chat with the dean of Tampa Bay sports radio, Steve Duemig of WDAE-AM 620. There was plenty of very spirited debate, especially when it came down to the Bucs’ goals in the NFL Draft. Enjoy!

Pretty bad when deumig is talking about your pessimism. Maybe it’s time for a vacation.

  5. Eric Says:

McCown was commenting on his UFL experience. He asked if he could get some shorts and they gave him directions to Dicks Sporting Goods.

    Gotta pull for this guy.

I know, I know he does nothing really great but he did have a good run last year. Who knows maybe he can keep it up. He’s a fired up guy and a good leader. Haven’t seen that at QB for awhile.

    Might have Rich Gannon 2.0.

  6. Andrew 1 Says:

I’m calling it, McCown WILL be a good starting QB for us next season. I’ll stick my neck out on this one. I’m not saying he will be a pro bowler, but he will post much better numbers than what Glennon did last season. Joe, dont knock it until you give him a chance. Need I remind you about Penn…

  7. mark2001 Says:

If Josh doesn’t have more than one real NFL receiver to throw to…like Mike didn’t, we are in big trouble. These signings are fine, but one of our biggest weaknesses still remains. Still very uneasy with where we are …

  8. mark2001 Says:

If we don’t do any more at the WR position and we go into the draft basically where we are, I’d almost guarantee Watkins would be the pick if he and johnny are on the board.

  9. Eric Says:

Chop chop chop, clear that dead wood Lovie.

I’d venture a guess that he has the team’s undivided attention.

Im gonna laugh my ass off if Glennon beats McCown out. And Im not a Glennon Mobber

I thought McCown out played Cutler last season hands down…

I few years ago I would have hated this move but I really think McCown is the right fit at the right time for this football team…I’m happy for Josh I always thought physically he had all the tools but wasn’t quite ready mentally…Some QB’s are just late bloomers (Rich Gannon immediately comes to mind; he was 34 when he got his chance with the Raiders) unfortunately once these type of QB’s get pegged/labeled as “back up” QB’s they very rarely if ever get that one last chance to become starters…Hmmmm, It’s kinda ironic that Brad Johnson was exactly the same age as McCown when he helped us reach/win the SuperBowl…Let’s Go Bucs; It’s Time to Grind…

  13. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I think its interesting that we get heavy doses of Johnny Football on JBF but when Joe is on the radio the name brought up as an example is ” if somehow Teddy Bridgwater falling to them”….
But, nevertheless…if we draft a QB at 7….he starts.

rich gannon had offensive minded jon gruden as head coach though. it still remains to be seen about tedford, but I am optimistic.

Actually there are 2 very good WRs and two pretty good pass catching TEs. And a great stable of RBs.

Jackson and Williams are very good. You may or may not believe so, but it is true.

Maybe, maybe not. There are plenty of cases where coaches let first round picks ride the pine for a season or so, and if McCown can actually do well enough (which I doubt) it would be a good chance to develop both backup QBs.

Remember, if we draft a QB and Josh does poorly, Lovie can tell the Glaziers “Look, I have a backup plan. I just need a little time to develop him first.”

But if he starts the drafted QB right away, he pretty much goes all in without a backup plan.

Personally, I’m in favor of making Josh earn the fortune we’re paying him. I’m betting he’ll get injured at some point and maybe retire without earning it all though.

Starting to like the like guy. Lets jus hope we draft a qb in the 1st to groom behind him

  18. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Off topic, why is it that EVERYONE turned on Schiano because he was a college coach, and yet everyone seems to think our OC can come into the NFL with no experience and shine?

I thought college coaches were a bad thing?

    ALSO
Why is it that everyone wants to imitate a team from the previous year EVERY YEAR.

Raheem wanted us to be the Packers.
Schiano year one we were the Giants.
Schiano year two we were going to be someone else.
Under Lovie we’re supposed to become the Seahawks or Kansas City.

Why can’t we just have our own identity and other teams try to mimic us??

(yeah, I’m tired and whiny; Going to bed now)

  19. Sqeeky Says:

Dude, this comment was deleted because it’s thoroughly false. Joe likes, keyword likes, Mike Glennon, just not as a starter. You’ll never find otherwise in the archives here, which are available to search. Last Joe checked backup QB is an important position. Sorry, but Joe’s not going to pretend he thinks a player at the most important position on the field is the right guy. –Joe

  20. Random Sports guy Says:

Well we did have our identity when lovie was here and everyone DID copy us

  21. Hawaiian Buc Says:

    @BuccaneerBonzai,

I don’t think all college coaches are bad, but college coaches who bring a college mentality to the pros are usually really bad. Chip Kelly, for example, does not treat his players like college players. Schiano did numerous things that are more on the hgh school level than even college. The toes on the line crap is an absolute joke for grown men. Being a crazy control freak is an absolute joke for grown men. Yelling and screaming constantly at players and referees is an absolute joke for grown men. Schiano refused to adjust his game plan, and just wanted to “force his will” upon other teams.

Also, there is a big difference between being a head coach and a coordinator. A head coach is a leader more than a x’s and o’s guy. Schiano was an absolutely horrendous leader, and the overwhelming majority of his players hated him. Hope that answers your question.

  22. PRBucFan Says:

Tedford will be fine, he’s been doing what he does for a long time in a lot of places including professionally albeit not the NFL but it was above the collegiate level in the CFL. He understands how to run a successful offense and he can do it at any level.

    Watch and see.

And what on earth makes you think McCown will get hurt?

I’m gonna go ahead and follow A1 and say I think he will start and be successful this year for the Bucs.

I say our rookie QB will be a later pick most likely but he will sit behind McCown for a year or 2.

  23. mark2001 Says:

Bonzai…Jackson is fine…as I said. Williams is good…if he plays and wants to play football, though he is slow. And wasn’t tearing it up when he got hurt last year,Wonder if his best year or two are behind him. Everyone has the rest you mentioned….So where are the weapons? You talk RB’s and TE..every team has them. Chicago had better receivers, so you better get McCown some help.

Glennon had more TD and threw for more yards in 13 games than McClown had in the last eight years… so yeah, you just stick your neck out. I just don’t get the bozos on this site.

  25. PRBucFan Says:

    Gannon also came on late…

Snook what did McCown do just last year?
