Coach Talks “Trashy Magazines” & “Snicker Bars”

December 10th, 2013

It’s safe to say Greg Schiano doesn’t read National Enquirer or fantasize about Brett Favre or Johnny Football in his backfield.

A rare improvisational moment from Mike Glennon on Sunday led Schiano to explain one of his core beliefs.

Speaking on his radio show last night on WDAE-AM 620, Schiano responded to a caller who wanted to know what Glennon was doing when he threw a potentially-intercepted, weak shovel pass while scrambling under duress in the third quarter.

“I guarantee you, if you ask Mike, he’d say, ‘I don’t know what the heck I was thinking there,'” Schiano said. “That’s not what we do. We call those impulse throws. And we get that from, you know, in marketing they talk about those impulse items when you’re checking out at the grocery store. Right? They have the trashy magazines and they got the Snicker bars, and all the stuff you can grab quickly. And then, you know, you throw that magazine on the counter and it’s $7.95 and you don’t even realize you just got taken. Well, it can be the same for quarterbacks.

“You know we really try to stay away from those impulse throws. ‘Hey, let me try this.’ No. You trust your training and you keep from doing it. Because for every one great impulse play you make, they’ll be three or four that are going the other direction.”

Are those rag magazines really $7.95? Joe’s not sure, but if Brittany’s on the cover, there’s always a chance Joe might throw one in the shopping bag alongside the celery.

So in other words, make your QB into a robot that never gets to rely on his improvisational skills or natural instincts. Johnny Football or some of the past NFL greats could never play for Schiano

  2. ShutTheBucUp Says:

Look at guys like Brady and Manning. When somethings not there, they check down, throw it OB, or take the sack. You don’t see them impulsively chucking shovel passes like Roethelisberger and Romo. And for good reason, as Schiano noted. I’d rather have a QB that takes less risks with the ball. Its hard to score when your offense doesn’t have the ball. I see nothing wrong with protecting the football.

  3. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

    Bullspit, Patrick.

They’ve been doing a decent job with Glennon. I still question if he is worth the effort but the coaches are doing a great job the last 5 of 6 games. Step past your bias and open your eyes.

  4. Ryan CO Says:

    BuccaneerBonzai,

I completely agree, he may not be posting elite numbers but anyone who questions his arm strength should watch the first TD pass to Vjax, 50 yards running out of the pocket and delivers a strike for a td? I’ll take that from a “non-mobile” qb all day

  5. Ryan CO Says:

Not to mention he has decent decision making at the line for a rookie QB. In fact I would say his ability to recognize schemes is above average. Give that specifically time to develop and Glennon can be a force to be reckoned with.

  6. McBuc Says:

Theonly people I hear questioning Glennon as the QB for the Bucs are in the Tampa area. The rest of the country seems impressessed with the kid. Maybe he is not Drew breez, and not too many are, but he is solid. Matt Ryan is not exactly lighting it up this year with a beat up offense and a bad offensive line. Cam is looking like super man, and Drew is Drew…I think Glennon will continue to improve and fit right in. he is doing a pretty good job with a bunch of back ups and nobodies.

  7. McBuc Says:

Iwill take him over the impolsive Freeman all day long…

  8. d-money Says:

    Mr. Patrick,

There is a diffrence between impulse throws that Shchiano is talking about and the Improvising that those guys do.

    Impulse=desperation.

You can improvise without throwing the ball out of desperation..such as the TD pass to Vjax where he escaped the rush, rolled out and threw the ball where only Vincent could get it.

  9. d-money Says:

    McBuc,

Didn’t you know that commenters on JBF.com know more about football than anyone else?

Especally all the former coaches and palyers on NFL network and ESPN and definitely more than anyone at 1BP.

Its really a crime that most of thiese guys aren’t running their own NFL teams.

I’m not comparing glennon to brady but when brady got the start for bledsoe people thought the season was over. A 6th round draft pick was going to go know where. You had to be drafted in the first round to be a good quarterback. I bet they are glad bledsoe got hurt now!

  11. pick6 Says:

    @mr. patrick-

yes but peyton manning and tom brady could. plenty of great QBs have won because they are prepared and disciplined. besides, i think it evolves with time and trust. once you have your foundation in making the smart throws and being a great anticipator, coaches will be okay with a player trusting his ability to make a risky throw here and there. but even the great brett favre would get an earful from his coaches for those impulse throws, even though they were kind of his trademark

  12. HFXBUC Says:

Joe’s….. please for the love of Josh Freeman’s banishment, stop it with the auto play ads! JUST TERRIBLE. I didn’t even both read this story, because of the annoying ADS! it’s even worse when I come to your site and try to listen to one of your audio clips and the both end up playing at the same time. STOP IT PLEASE!

  13. Mr. Patrick Says:

    @ Bonzai
You like the coaching that Glennon is getting but you don’t know if he is worth it? What an ignorant statement. Fence sitting at it’s finest

  14. Mr. Patrick Says:

    @d-money
    Agreed on both points

  15. Clowney Says:

” but anyone who questions his arm strength should watch the first TD pass to Vjax, 50 yards running out of the pocket and delivers a strike for a td”

Take off your rose colored glasses, that fluttering, wounded duck of a pass more or less resembled a punt.

The Bucs are blessed with a mediocre 3rd round QB who might have fallen into the 6th or 7th if not for the Little General’s high school crush. At least they didn’t select him in the 1st like his twin, Trent Dilfer.

With an abundance of good QB’s in the draft, after shoring up the DL, they’ll be able to pick up a starter in the 2nd.

  16. McBuc Says:

HFX, those adds have been here for a long time, nothing can be done. They are fed to the site by the partners that enable us to read the site for free. I just turn my volume down. I have not experienced them playing while I am listening to audio content though.

  17. McBuc Says:

Clowney, again, only Bucs fans seem to think this way, it is a bit of a head scratcher to me. The kid has played very well, but you guys still say he is just ok and should be a back up. I think some of you guys think Drew breez like QBs grow on trees. I see this kid progressing at a great rate, and his future is very bright. He had a down game on Sunday, but his TD to int ratio and comp percentage are pretty darn good over all.

  18. Mr. Patrick Says:

    @
    Pick 6
I get your point, but Schiano would never run the types of offense that they both play in. And they are both very improvisational at times, but yet diciplined

  19. bucsfan13 Says:

clowney is a bust waiting to happen. He is a young albert hainsworth. Dude was just busted doing 110 in a 70. now what we drafted this punk in the first round and he does some dumb crap. The nfl commish will be all over him like flies on sh#t. Not to mention haven’t you noticed schiano only likes picking team captains! Clowney is no team captain.

  20. bucsfan13 Says:

p.s. same with Johnny “mad Money” football. He will be a bust like all mobile qbs. wait for the injuries forth coming. Not to mention his small stature will sink him. he is the tebow from texas minus the great character

  21. Bucfan#37 Says:

Glennon is a damn good QB for his age and experience. I see him as the Bucs QB throughout next season and beyond, barring injury.

  22. Clowney Says:

I see him digressing at an alarming rate. Other teams have developed a book on him and he will spend the rest of his short starting career sprinting to his left throwing wildly inaccurate and uncatchable balls.

  23. Matt Says:

Who’s Joe trying to fool with the celery in the cart? Must’ve been an “impulse” buy when he spotted some cougar in aisle 6.

  24. Mitch Says:

Ya anxious pansies Calm yourselves man. He’s faced solid defenses lately and is still learning. Where’s yourpatience? He’s a 3rdd rookie pick that got thrown into the fire and has performed rather well given his circumstances.. Yes his stat line was miserable on Sunday, but the kid can’t catch the ball too!

  25. McBuc Says:

Clowney, really? What are this weeks lotto numbers, I could use some extra cash.

  26. tampabaybucfan Says:

OK…actually, I’m relieved….I thought it was a designed play that was executed even when it wasn’t there….
I think one of the things that Glennon will learn is that he has just a bit more time in the pocket than he thinks he does. He will learn this by watching all the tapes of himself….He will begin to understand that he can trust his line just a bit more. That will give him a split second to find an open receiver.
Some of these plays for him are designed poorly…he needs two or three options…either that or the receivers aren’t executing their routes well.

  27. JonBuc Says:

The only celery I picture Joe polishing off is the stalk at the bottom of a basket of Hooter’s wings that’s been marinating in wing sauce and/or ranch dressing for a quarter or two of football. 🙂

  28. Bobby Says:

Glennon is ‘wildly inaccurate’?? Really…at 60% I would have never guessed. All I know is we’ve won four of the last five. Does Glennon have work to do…of course. Name me one rookie who ever started in the NFL who didn’t have a learning curve. His upside to me is well worth the investment of putting weapons around him.

  29. BuccoBill Says:

Hey Joe, I’m with HFXBUC on the auto-start adds. Click through is one thing, but I shouldn’t have to check if my volume is low or muted before opening a page. It woke my granddaughter one night because of this on one of your pages.
