Dawning Of A New Era?

Da'Quan Bowers can't record much-needed sacks if he is chained to the bench.

Da’Quan Bowers can’t record much-needed sacks if he is chained to the bench.

Though Joe isn’t expecting it, Joe hopes, pleads that the Bucs coaches who have their hands in the mix with the defense learned from last night.

For perhaps the first time all season, what fans and ex-players have been clamorning for more than a quiet, intimate evening with Rachel Watson, the Bucs stopped monkeying around with the defensive front line and actually attack the quarterback!

Simple physics: Shortest distance between two points is a straight line, not dancing around in the flat when no one is there and the quarterback is comfortably in the pocket, waiting for his pizza delivery.

Bucs coaches kept saying how they wanted to get struggling defensive end Da’Quan Bowers more playing time, yet Bowers languished on the bench like a man waiting for the Obamacare site to be fixed.

Finally Bucs coaches — perhaps trying to outtrick Joe Philbin? — put Bowers on the field when the team needed a defensive stand to win the game and told the lineman to “go get” Dolphins quarterback Ryan Tannehill, and look what happened? The Bucs got back to back sacks on consecutive plays (Joe’s thinking the last time that happened Jeb! Bush was govenor), one coming from Bowers himself!

Even eye-RAH! Kaufman of the Tampa Tribune took notice.

@IKaufmanTBO: You know it’s a new day in Tampa Bay when DE Da’Quan Bowers gets in on the action with QB pressure during crunch time. He needs more snaps

But will coaches learn from last night, the first win this season? Time will tell.

Joe assumes Team Glazer is watching. They, too, saw what happened when the defensive line is turned loose, and not going through motions as if they are auditioning for a dancing show (like NFL AM).

It was a move by Bucs coacb Bill Sheridan that likely brought a smile to Warren Sapp’s eye. And giddiness and victory for Bucs fans.

This is the reason the Bucs’ record SUCKS!
This kid was the Number One projected pick until injury.
And now he is on the Bench?!?!?
    I Call BS!!!
That last D Stand with the two sacks involving he and GMC
is what it should be every game.
Sprinkle in the stunts but don’t live by them.
Too much talent for our DB’s to have as many sacks as our DLine.
    Sapp was right.
The coaches are using these guys WRONG.
And those last Four Downs Prove it.

    @Joe

How do you feel on how Adrian lines up sometimes standing up? I feel like hes not even doing his bull rush ever when lining up that way?

  3. Biff Barker Says:

It’s only one win in a dismal season but the Bucs, and Bowers, at least have something to build on.

  4. THETRUTH Says:

Let him play at get better. The other end TEO Does NOTHING. Bowers did more on two plays at end than TEO has since game one starter .

You may be right but Joe reverts to Bill Cowher on this: “Get in a two-point stance, three-point stance, four-point stance. Do whatever you feel is comfortable so long as you sack the quarterback.”

  6. Posey99 Says:

Stunting is almost always more effective on running plays, which I think is the coaches priority over sacks. However, I agree- On a three step drop there is absolutley no time to stunt because the ball is out so fast. 3rd and long/ shotgun formations we should be turning the guys loose.

  7. Larry Says:

A Rachel Watson reference without a link to a photo? What’s going on Joe?

  8. Joe Says:

    Larry:

Thanks for the catch. Joe corrected that terrible mistake.

  9. Larry Says:

    Thanks Joe. Much better.

    It’s all about priorities.

Still have butterflies in my stomach just thinking about that stand.

  11. bucsQcCity Says:

The last defensive stand was incredible! And it has nothing to do with stunts/coaching, it was the RAW talent on the field playing sound football.

Loved it. I rewatched it this morning and still buzzing about it!

More Bower, Less Stunts. Just let them do their job!

  12. Buc Neckid Says:

That last stand looked a lot like more about Pride than about Coaching
It looked like a winless team fed up with everything
It looked like Men, Man-ing up and getting it done.
It looked like a Turning Point.
It looked like what Sapp and Co. would do in that instance.
It looked like what it could have would have and should have been ALL Year!!!

  13. BB Says:

I see leadership emerging in L David and core players are turning the Corner the team is bonding and buying into sciano and glennon as their guy. I have said this for awhile they will surprise teams down the stretch and win five to seven games for the year keep Dominick and sciano. This team is on its way to being something from now on the three question marks are:

Offensive line when healthy are these guys good enough?

Defensive line whether its sceme or talent this unit could have won several games QBs have to start going down like the old days

Nickel corners and Banks need pass rush to help them as aside from revis the corners are a bit lacking in talent

  14. ImissAlstott&Lynch Says:

Please let us win more than Jacksonville.

  15. BirdDoggers Says:

Hopefully the coaching staff learned a thing or two. The stunts are ok every now and then but just let the defense pin their ears back and go after the QB. Hopefully the coaching staff learned a thing or two. They seem to be very slow learners so I’m not banking on it.

  16. Splengo Says:

BB has been hanging out with Dwayne Bowe!

  17. BB Says:

I have a few folks out there doubting but I can tell you the comments I have posted are going to come true aside from the couple if concerns I had I should mention they need to put bowers out there and see if he can do it or not but this team is responding to adversity and rallying together with sciano and the guys in the locker room believe glennon us their QB and will continue to be. They beat Miami as I predicted and next week will beat Atlanta

Its funny that you say that because while i was watching the game, on defense, a bunch of times i decided to look exclusively at Clay and it pained me to see that more often than not, he was looping all the way around Spence AND McCoy just to get to the QB. And every single time, Tanny would get rid of the ball JUST before Clay got there.

I wanted to rip out my locs.

  19. Splengo Says:

    BB,

With a straight face name the 5 to 7 teams you think we are going to beat? I mean you honestly think from here we can run the table? As the ESPN guys say “Come on man!”.

  20. White Tiger Says:

    We may beat Buffalo…that’s it.

This team is loaded with talent, and that talent is playing it’s heart out, but they are forced to play this weird defensive system.

The talented are contributing exceptional behavior to achieve…average…results.

    It’s the system, stupid.

The only reason we won – by 3 points after blowing a 15 point lead – was the entire left side of the Miami line was manned by a couple of back-ups. The position responsible for protecting the QB’s blind side was not even on this team 3 weeks ago.

This result is only going to serve to frustrate fans, and players, who think they’ve turned a corner.

Now that the heat has been dialed back a bit on Schiano, he will go back to his base defense. Dont get used to those blitz packages, they weren’t Schiano’s idea, and they were only to alleviate the pressure on the coach. This head coach has proven he’s inflexible, he doesn’t like adapting. He believes that adapting means someone isn’t doing their job correctly. You all know that he’s absolutely chafing at the idea that the fans of this laughing stock team have been proven right about turning the dogs loose to save some jobs.

While Atlanta DOES still have that walking human penalty flag (Jeremy Trueblood) they can still play defense and their QB can load up the team on his back and deliver a game when one is needed.

It’s still going to be rough sledding for Bucs fans…

  21. BB Says:

Bucs will beat falcons bills rams and two of the following 49ers lions saints and panthers that is six wins and momentum for next year as they will be healthy and add through the draft and make a run at ten wins

  22. Splengo Says:

    BB,

I’ve saved your last post to Word. You might want to change your website name. I promise you will see those words again!

  23. Chef Paul Says:

Who cares if BB is wrong. So the guy has faith. So what? It’s not like he’s being a dick about it.
