Lorig Stays Home

September 7th, 2013

The Bucs revealed tonight that starting fullback Erik Lorig continues to battle his calf injury and didn’t make the trip to New Jersey for the season-opener against the Jets.

Lorig’s been battling the injury for more than a month. He was limited in practice this week, but apparently didn’t improve enough.

As Joe wrote earlier this week, Lorig’s situation presents a huge opportunity for Peyton Hillis. Brian Leonard and rookie Mike James are not fullbacks. Even though Leonard played there in college, he’s dropped significant weight since then and isn’t expected to do anything more than backup Doug Martin and serve as a third-down back intermittently.

Hillis at FB huh? He does remind me a little bit of Mike Alstott. If he can even be half the player Alstott was, that’d be great.

We will find out if we miss Lorig on Sunday & if Hillis can stay healthy for more than 5 snaps.
I suspect we will play with a lot of one back sets, two TE sets & a TE lined up in the backfield.
I hope Lorig’s absence insn’t felt. In the long run, I don’t believe we need Hillis & Lorig…so this game may provide some direction.

@walter. I thought the same thing.

  4. Couch Fan Says:

No Nicks as well, which was expected.

  5. Vern4499 Says:

Please never say Hillis in the sane breath as Alstott. Lets get serious

    @ Vern4499

    Walter qualified his remark…

“If he can even be half the player Alstott was, that’d be great.”

We’ll give Hillis 1/2 of Alstott maybe even 51%

  7. MR.T Says:

who else didn’t make the trip to NY?

  8. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @MR. T

    Nicks, Crabtree, Melvin & 1 other….

  9. RBellBuc Says:

Who just had groin surgery? Wasn’t it Danny Gorrer? Did he make the trip?

  10. stratobuc Says:

Gorrer is on I.R. designated for return.

Hillis had huge fumble issues in the past. While I believe the Bucs have likely addressed ball security with him, we will have to see if it took. In preseason he had it easy.

He will never be a Mike Alstott. But he can carve a niche of Bucs hostory for himself if hexdoes well.

Personally I always thought Lorig would make a better TE.

  12. Biff Barker Says:

Expect Martin to get at least 6-8 passes thrown his way today.

  13. BucsfaninChina Says:

Our fate at FB and tight end rests in Peyton Hillis and Luke Stocker AKA The Glass Brothers. Good to know

  14. nick Says:

Erik Lorig should just go home he sucks anyways, and I hate his name,Hillis should be FB for the year.

  15. BucsQcCity Says:

I want to see an option play in a Wishbone formation with Hillis as FB and Martin and Leonard as TB. Now that would be nice.. Probably highly ineffective but still entertaining
