Three Rookies On Defensive Front

Akeem Spence

In either a testament to how thin/weak the defensive line was last year or to the prowess of Bucs rock star general manager Mark Dominik — or both — three third-day drafted rookies make the Bucs squad.

That would be defensive tackle Akeem Spence and defensive ends Steven Means and William Gholston.

That’s pretty remarkable either way you slice it, no matter how you look at it.

Of all the rookie defensive linemen, Joe thought the guy hanging by a loose string was Gholston. He really didn’t flash much in training camp or during preseason games. He is a raw talent.

Joe believes Means will be a pass-rushing specialist, at least for the time being. Spence, of course, is expected to start.

Joe just wonders how much of the Da’Quan Bowers implosion factored in to keeping three late-drafted rookies?

  2. RBellBuc Says:

This is not the final 53. Gholston may be gone before you know it.

The old “draft ego” showing itself…..keep drafted players in hopes that they will finally proove you right…..Will Keith Tandy be our next Myron Lewis…..will it be Means?…Gholston?

  4. Robbie_G Says:

NO depth on the O line, hope Nicks is going to be ok. Also, Surprised Gibson got cut, McCoy and Spence need to stay healthy

Joe Not Very Funny Bucs Fan has named three defensive lineman but they have yet to play a game. Let’s see how they d when the bullets really start flying.

  6. Mr. Patrick Says:

Only 3 DT’s. I bet they pick up another one that somebody else cuts

  7. MR.T Says:

The kept Treavor Scott as well, not exactly a ringing endorsement for Bowers they kept so many DE’s

  8. Buc1987 Says:

    I like Spence a lot.

  9. Red86 Says:

Both Bowers and Gholston play well in the run. They did alright in playing their assignments. It not just them that didn’t get sacks. I think only Scott got a sack “from the d line” and Bower split one with Scott.

I like Ghoston until Dom finds one better. The best 53. That’s how you win. You have to cut bait sometimes even if it was a recent draft pick. If there’s a DE out there that has proven to be better than Gholston has, then he should be waived. There is no time to develop players when you have a very short window to produce in. Ghoston may be really great 2 years from now but that doesn’t help us now. If Dominik and Schiano don’t win now there is no guarantee they will be here next year. Dom needs the scouting dept. to put on their collective thinking caps and give Schiano the players he needs not players that take time to develop. It’s win now, not in the future.

So who os on “The Hot Seat” for the Bucs Personnel blunders. Everyone saw last years D-Line except GMC walk out the door when it would’nt have cost very much to retain them in the depressed FA Market of 2013.
Not to mention the Parade of DB’s that were on the market for cheap that the Bucs ignored.

Marky D. & Schiano put all their eggs in the Basket on The Unknown
    1. Revis Trade and successful recovery
    2. Da’Quan Bowers recovery, Motivation, and Clemson 1yr Flash
    3. The return of 2 Healthy Pro Bowl Guards
    4. That Starters would get them by in a League where Injuries are prominent and the Bucs HAVE NO DEPTH AT ANY….YES ANY POSITION!

  12. Mike Glennon's Mob Says:

We believe there is no hot seat yet until after the 1st game, which is when we will better know where this team is at.

  13. BucFanForever Says:

    4. Except running back, o-line, wide receiver, safety, linebacker, qb, and maybe linebacker

Why would there even been a question about Spence he more than proved himself. Means while he didn’t set the world in fire will develop into a good situational pass rusher.
And Gholston can rush from the end or 3 tech so he provides speed and power.

And Tandy had one bad game and he’s the next M. Lewis? He lead the team in tackles in the preseasin last year and had an int this year and he can play nickel and both safety spots. He is a much better player than Grimm and was better on Special teams too.

What other DE and DT should of stayed, we really didn’t have much to work with.

I think last year the Bucs D-line was second to last in Sacs and Pressures. It seem that the pop-star has locked down the position of dead last for the D-line,,,,,,,,Again!
