Schiano Would Start Two Rookie Cornerbacks

March 18th, 2013

A new form of ice water was tossed on a potential Darrelle Revis trade this morning.

Tampa Tribune Bucs beat writer Woody Cummings had an in-depth chat with Justin “The Commish” Pawlowski on 98.7 FM and proclaimed the New Schiano Order has the fortitude to open the 2013 season with two rookie starting cornerbacks, if it doesn’t like its options and value via trade or free agency.

“They have the confidence they can make that work,” Cummings said.

Cummings cited former Bears secondary coach Greg Schiano’s hands-on ways with the Bucs’ defensive backs in practice, as well as the team’s faith in its safeties, which now include All-Pro Dashon Goldson. (Joe also will point to Schiano’s apparent takeover of the defensive backs very late in the 2012 season.)

Now Joe can’t predict what the Bucs will do with their woeful cornerbacks corps. It is considered a deep class of rookie corners. But Joe thinks starting two rookie cornerbacks would be the equivalent of NFC South suicide.

However, Joe does believe a Revis trade will get done this spring.

    Good lord.

all we need is 4 guys who can run & play man-to-man. Defensive Pass Rush is @ Pick #13

  3. Nick P. Says:

Exactly how do you have confidence in players that don’t exist yet? This can’t be what Schiano meant..

Doesn’t that pretty much telegraph the fact we’ll take a CB in round 1 (it’s likely anyways), but to say we’re willing to start two rookies, would that really be the case is neither was a 1st round pick?

That being said, if/when we draft a CB with the 13th overall pick, I would love the leverage the Bucs would have for 24 hours before the 2nd round started to move that 2nd pick to the Jets.

  5. Brandon Says:

This draft class is deep and talented at the CB position. If we picked CBs with 2 of our first 3 picks there is a very good chance we come up with one solid rookie starter. If we can re-sign Biggers, and a couple of bargain FA CBs to come in and compete, I think we could have a decent defensive backfield in 2013. Barber could come back to man the nickel and the secondary would be in good shape if the pass rush is half decent.

  6. Patrick Says:

I don’t understand why the fk they can’t bring in a guy like Winfield or Jammer for depth purposes, instead of investing the next several years in two highly drafted cornerbacks. I’m in favor of drafting Trufant in the 1st, but after that we have several more needs to cover thanks to Dom!

Do you know what keeps it from telegraphing we are taking a CB? The fact that we lost our starting NT (Sheldon Richardson, Shariff Floyd, Star Lotelelei, Kawann Short), and our starting Sam LB (Dion Jordan, Barkevious Mingo, Jarvis Jones) and there are many valuable guys that we could take to replace them that might actually help the pass rush more than a CB.

  8. JH Says:

As long as they are an upgrade… but I guess that’s not saying much.

  9. Dan Says:

Ahhh why does this orginization refuse to bring in proven talent. Doms refusal to do this from day one after cutting all our vets in 09 has been our weakness. Go ahead and whine about chucky and bruce fans. How many loosong seasons did they turn in. Just sayin.

  10. flmike Says:

It seems that the remaining CB’s in FA have an inflated sense of their own value even based upon the current state of contracts being signed by FA CBs, they are all going with the wait and see approach, hoping some team will be desperate enough to sign them for more money than is being currently allocated to FA CBs.

Just like Gruden was confindent he could make Gradkowski the next Jeff Garcia or better

and they will play in an empty stadium.

Going into year 5 of this rebuilding bullish!t and we’re not even close to being a playoff team.

  15. Nick P Says:

We are extremely close to being a playoff team.

  16. Tha a Says:

There are two corners that can be had in the second or third round that might fit the bucs well. First one out of Boise jamar Taylor a hands on corner just like they like. The other one is off of everyone’s board dj Hayden of Houston look up his clips both will be there in late second and third round. Check them out and let me know what you think.

  17. FrankPillow Says:

Patrick’s observation is spot-on. There are just too many holes in this roster to think another draft class- even a good one- can fill. There’s suspect depth at WR; RB and we’re out starters at LB, DL, CBs. I’m being generous with the OL. What’s frustrating is that the “plan” isn’t apparent. Yeah, Goldson is a substantial upgrade who will make Barron better too by allowing him to play (potentially) in a more natural position. What about EVERYWHERE else, Mark? Revis isn’t the answer to everything either, which is why I would love to hear that we’re chasing other than 3rd stringers from the Cowboys, Saints and Packers.

  18. BrianDorry55 Says:

Thank god we have 4 first round picks so we can draft 2 cornerbacks, a defensive tackle, and a defensive end…wait a second…GOD DAMMIT!

  19. BrianDorry55 Says:

    NickP:

We may also be extremely close to once again being a 4-win team looking for a new head coach…and a GM.

  20. patrickbucs Says:

Guys you don’t think that’s a little bit of postering on the Bucs behalf back to the Jets? Jets have publicly said this week they could sign Revis to an extension possible to make the Bucs or another team panic and ultimately meet their trade demands. Say what you want to say about Schiano he’s no fool and very calulated.

I can’t imagine they would wheel out 2 rookie cb’s week 1 unless 1 of those was Milner (lost of picks to trade up for him) or there were a slew of injuries or suspensions. Plus you need 3 starting corners in this league not 2. 1 other thought and I hope this wasn’t also directed at Wright! Would be for him to not face an outright release and sign a significantly reduced 1 year deal. I would rather see Wright cut and a no name undrafted free agent start in front of that disgrace.

  21. Nick P Says:

There was only one game where we were not competitive. There were 5 where we lost on 1 or 2 plays late (usually because of a lapse in the secondary). The evidence supports that we are much closer to 10-6 than 4-12.

  22. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

I sure hope so! Atlanta’s receivers torched Goldson in the playoffs last year.
We only got a C in free agency grade, so far.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers relied on a more thrifty approach to free agency, after 2012’s big-money moves. Their biggest deal secured prized free safety Dashon Goldson.

He will certainly improve a weak secondary and form a dangerous tandem with big-hitter Mark Barron. However, as skilled as Goldson is, his play certainly deteriorated in last season’s playoffs.

He was alarmingly bad against the Atlanta Falcons in the NFC Championship Game. Considering he’ll now be facing Julio Jones and Roddy White twice a season, Goldson had better get back to his best soon.

The other signings were low-cost additions that mainly focus on depth. Still, if Goldson plays to his talent, the Bucs will emerge from free agency as winners.

    Grade: C

  23. Dan Says:

good teams that are in close games dont loos them. Our team lacks the ability to close games. 10-6 is reserved for teams who win close games not choke them away.

  24. Kevin Says:

If the Bucs come out with no name rookie corners, no depth on the defensive line and lose the first two home games… Raymond James Stadium will be a ghost town.

  25. Eric Says:

THis is the Dominik Doctrine. Saturate one position during the draft like he he did on the D-line and receivers, hope you hit on some.

Not surprising he would do that with corners.

Usually his methodology leads to very long losing streaks and NFL records for futility in one or more important aspects of the game – like stopping the passing or running game. Horrifying team records have also been shattered, like most points given up in a season, etc. Not to mention the now four year dry spell on the playoffs.

Working like a charm. Keep up the good work. No need to alter the grand plan.

  26. Dan Says:

Rumor has it that the Lightning on any given night at 19,250 will have more people then the Buccaneers vs Buffalo, Buccaneers vs Arizona games

  27. teacherman777 Says:

    Antoine Winfield would be awesome.

He is STILL considered the top run defense CB in the NFL. He could still be very useful as depth and as a mentor. I know he and Ronde are old, but dont tell tell me that it wouldnt be special to see them talking to our young corners and leading by example.

But there is a ZERO percent chance we do that.

Coach is convinced he can run a college-like program and help players evolve.

They think they can make Gorrer, Tandy and Johnson into players.

Add 2 more from this draft this. Thats 5 young DB’s.

I think we are sticking with YOUTH, speed, and hope we can develop hard workers.

We are going to give roster spots to young, fast talent.

So forget the idea of signing guys older than 28.

    “Shiano would start two rookies”

    Really? No Sh**?

After the crap he marched on the field last year, it’s pretty obvious that he’d put helmets and jerseys on two fresh steaming piles, and name them his starters!

And they probably would do no worse!

  31. truth Says:

This is the reason College’s coach fail in the NFL. They can not coach men who talk back. Instead of working with them, they just cut them. The Buc’s tried to get some of the free agents but they refuse to come because of coach ego. That is the reason he announce he would tone it down this year.
