Bucs Angling For Revis

March 12th, 2013

Update: 4:02 p.m. NFL Network also is confirming the Bucs-Jets trade discussions.

The team most desperate for cornerback help is working to craft a deal with the team most desperate to trade a stud corner, so reports NBC Sports’ Mike Florio, creator, curator and guru of ProFootballTalk.com.

Florio says the Jets and Bucs are working on a trade that would bring Darrelle Revis to Tampa Bay. But time is of the essence.

At best, it’s a package headlined by a second-round pick this year or possibly a first-rounder in 2014.  Under these circumstances, a 2013 first-round pick for Revis doesn’t make sense.

For the Jets and Revis, the question now becomes whether they are willing to do the deal, before the opportunity dries up.  If the Bucs sign a player like, say, Falcons cornerback Brent Grimes once the market opens, the Bucs will lose interest in Revis — and as of right now there’s no one else trying to get the deal done.

Joe can’t make this more clear. A healthy Revis is exactly what the Bucs need. However, Revis is coming off ACL surgery and his health is a major question mark.

Revis likely is the prototypical “Buccaneer Man,” given that he played for Greg Schiano confidant and new Bucs special teams coach Dave Wannstedt in college. But, is Revis willing to stay with the Bucs after his 2013 contract expires?

Lastly, what the hell is the trade value for an injured guy with one year left on his contract?

Joe thinks a first round pick is just too much. If the Jets will take a second-rounder, Joe thinks it’s worse the risk, assuming Revis passes the rigorous medical exam the Bucs will put him through.

Anything more than a 2nd and a 5th for the trade and $60 over 5yrs for the contract, then I say pass.

  2. Terraj Says:

Any trade would be pending a new deal like the percy trade to seattle. A 1st and a 6th is the farthest id go.

  3. Buc Fan #238 Says:

    We’ll see.

I don’t care how much they pay these players. Fans need to chill about what the Bucs are willing to pay. Afterall, contracts are usually backloaded and players rarely play out the entire contract.

  4. SensibleBuc Says:

We’ve got one of the most experienced staffs in the League in dealing with ACLs. I hope we get him despite all the headaches he brings around contract time.

  5. john Says:

dont do it administrator you are getting damaged goods

  6. Buc Fan #238 Says:

2nd round pick is fine by me.

The Pats 4th would be funny.

  7. Andrew 1 Says:

No! no first round picks. Im even reluctant to give up a second round pick.

  8. Hawaiian Buc Says:

Looks like we are going Bennett-less. Martellus just signed with Chicago.

  9. don't.be.naive Says:

This is a bold move. This could be the proverbial nail in Dominiks coffin if this doesn’t work out. Way too risky but the reward would be phenomenal.

  10. SensibleBuc Says:

It’s only an ACL. Have you heard any evidence to the contrary?

  11. Matt Says:

    Martellus bennett to the bears

  12. SilenceTheCritics Says:

I agree, 2nd rounder is a no brainer. I’d jump all over that

  13. AverageBucsFan Says:

Come on Rockstar. Get this deal done then go get Goldson and Grimes!!!!!!!

  14. Matt Says:

S Dashon Goldson will visit Tampa Bay first, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter

  15. the_buc_realist Says:

if we give up a 1st rounder the Rock star needs to GO!

  16. Miracle Says:

I like how we are holding the cards. All pressure is on the Jets to either make a play or we sign another CB once the bell rings. Dom needs a new nickname of slick

  17. Buc Fan #238 Says:

Matt… you beat me too it!!!

  18. bucincharlotte Says:

got to put some trust in Dom – after all, he is the one that engineered the deal with Wright which looks likely to allow the Bucs to part ways without losing out financially.

  19. Bucoff Says:

i was watching both bspn and nfln and there is a report that dashon Goldson is in tampa right now…

  20. thegregwitul Says:

Get this done, Mark. If the Bucs can land Revis and Goldson, man that would be quite a haul. And if they can do it without giving up their first round pick this season – cherry on top.

And if/when Revis comes to Tampa Bay – get him checked out by the docs and then PAY THE MAN. The Bucs pass defense was garbage. We can replace Bennett in the draft with a first round pick, unless we go TE.

    Fingers crossed.

  21. CT Bucs Says:

No more than a second rounder. I would even suggest that is too much. The JETS have to deal him and no other team has the need/cap space to take him on. I think the play is a third and Blount. He has a knee problem no team knows about it. All the risk is with the Bucs.

  22. Warrenfb12 Says:

well pewter report is down, shocker.

  23. JerseyBucsfan Says:

2nd, blount, benn get it done mark!!

  24. Robbie_G Says:

Put the squeeze on the Dom. They need a RB, give them a 3rd or 2nd and Blount.
Play chicken with them, you will WIN!!!!

  25. Andrew 1 Says:

looks like Martellus was full of sh!t about wanting to play with his brother. He only cared about the money. good, never wanted him anyway.

  26. Buc Fan #238 Says:

Free Agent signings need to happen on twitter.

I mean as soon as the bell rings (4:00 pm) commitments need to be made… none of this old school “team visits” that can take 3 days.

  27. The 300's Says:

Revis would have to pass a physical for everything to be approved. I would imagine the Bucs would have a lot of people look is knee over very thoroughly. If they don’t like what they see he does not pass the physical and the trade is null and void.

  28. Patrick Says:

Risky, but HIGH REWARD if it pays off!

  29. hamilton Says:

i will make that deal, 2 round thats a steal.

  30. Patrick Says:

Get Revis, draft Trufant (assuming we don’t surrender a 1st rounder), draft another CB in the 3rd and sign Cox for depth

  31. BucFan20 Says:

Hide this photo quick. See the QB try to chase him down?

  32. DJE Says:

How about a 2nd, Blount & a conditional mid rounder next year?

  33. Patrick Says:

How about putting Eric Wright in that trade deal? They will need a cornerback after unloading Revis right?

  34. Sneedy16 Says:

Eric’s contract will kill that trade. They are trying to cut down, because they are over the cap.

  35. Adam Says:

Not for nothing, but who doesn’t come back from the ACL surgery these days? I don’t think I can remember a situation where someone had ACL surgery and they said that it ended up ending his career. I remember Robert Edwards when he played for the patriots had massive reconstructive knee surgery but he destroyed his entire leg. Anyone with just an ACL tear usually comes back pretty strong given that they aren’t too old. It’s fairly routine.

That being said, I was really angry when Tom Brady won comeback player of the year over Cadillac Williams. He had just an ACL tear while Williams had almost his entire knee reconstructed.

  36. gracelivin Says:

I agree with Jersybuc, give them Blount, Benn and a 2nd, those two are expendable yet decent players in positions that the jets need. and with Goldson on a private jet I feel he is a lock, so with (revis, Goldson, Cox, )Barron and johnson, gaitor we will have a very solid if not elite secondary…

  37. SirustheVirus Says:

If you give them Blount ,Benn and a 2nd next year mabey not a 2nd tis year if they get BLount.
