Broncos’ Rush Defense Changed Game

December 2nd, 2012

Mike Williams believed the Broncos’ ability to shut down the Bucs’ rush attack in the third quarter changed the game.

Bucs wide receiver Mike Williams paused for a few brief moments after the Bucs loss to the Broncos to talk on the Bucs radio network.

In short, Williams stated the suffocating Broncos’ rush defense in the third quarter turned the Bucs into a one-dimensional team, which turned out to be a trap.

“We didn’t run the ball well” in the third quarter, “and we got into a situation where we couldn’t run well but we ran into a good defense,” Williams said. “I’m not making any excuses.”

On Williams’ play to set up his touchdown in the fourth-quarter:

“On the touchdown, it was an under-route,” Williams said. “Vincent was the first read and they doubled him and if they doubled him, I had “to get open.”

On the team’s character:

“That is what it is with this team. We fight, we fight, we fight to the final whistle. That is what Coach Schiano has brought to us.”

Having been at the game, I have to say this… the O-line did not do well opening holes. Sure, the Broncos run D played well on stretch plays, but inside the tackles, the O-line did nothing. Also, WRs were not getting open. Very little separation. Meanwhile, I was seeing Bronco WRs with nobody within 5 yards of them. Sure, they were sitting down in zones, but we’ve gotta tighten those up a bit.

I will watch the TV broadcast tomorrow, see if I see something different, but overall we have to step it up quite a bit if we want any chance of keeping the playoff race close. Seattle winning was a killer today, we will have to beat them outright in record to make the playoffs, which is highly unlikely at this point. We’re basically 2 games out with 4 games to go.

The Broncos changed something! The first and second halves were like night and day! It was like a different Bronco team came to play the second half. Our secondary got shredded (particularly LJ) in the 3rd qtr.
