Look Out For Mossis Madu

July 25th, 2012

Joe remembers last year when the Bucs signed Mossis Madu, Joe received a text message from a respected member of the Tampa Bay pen and mic club stating the signing was a steal, that Madu had been stuck in a nasty logjam at running back at Oklahoma, languishing on the bench behind eventual third round pick DeMarco Murray.

“This guy has some talent, he may be a big time sleeper,” Joe recalls of the text about Madu. The source of the text once covered Oklahoma.

Well, it seems Madu may not be much of a sleeper any longer. Yesterday while appearing on “Rome,” hosted by popular sports personality Jim Rome seen exclusively on CBS Sports Network, Rome asked Bucs coach Greg Schiano about the battle between LeGarrette Blount and Doug Martin for top running back.

Schiano informed Rome that it wasn’t just two running backs fans — and opponents — should be concerned with.

“I agree with you we have a great battle there and not just with those two guys but with Michael Smith and Mossis Madu as well. I think we have some good depth at running back and the battle will be something to watch. I have a lot of faith in LeGarrette. LeGarrette has bought in to what we are doing and he is working incredible hard and if you watch, you see the things he does is great, I mean really great running back plays. He just needs to put those things together consistently, again.”

It seems Madu, if there are battles, will battle Smith for the change-of-pace scatback position using his speed, where Blount and Martin will do the heavy lifting.

Below is the full interview that Schiano had with Rome yesterday, courtesy of the CBS Sports Network.

Madu showed some flashes last year. I’d love to see him put it all together. If he can he’d be a great change of pace back.

  2. MichiganBucsFan Says:

    concerned*

  3. bucfanjeff Says:

It’s safe to say Smith or Madu will get snagged if we try to put them on the practice squad. They all should be on the active roster.

  4. Dew Says:

No chance we can sneak Smith to the practice squad since Dom was already offered a sixth round pick for him right after we drafted him.

  5. FLBoyInDallas Says:

Wouldn’t be surprised to see the Bucs keep four RB’s and no fullback. Lorig doesn’t seem to be as valuable to this offense as Madu and Smith would be, plus Martin can do the blocking at times in a two-back set since he’s so good at it. With Lorig in the game you know he’s blocking…but with Martin in the backfield along with Smith or Madu the defense would be on their toes wondering who’s getting the ball.

  6. Dano Says:

I can’t wait to see what Bucs’s running game looks like. Especially up
the gut of the O-line. That’s gonna be a plus for Blount in my opinion.

    @FLboy

Thats a great idea! never thought about that before but would definately be worth trying out.

  8. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Says:

I used to be a Madu fan, he goes down too fast, just from arm tackles.
Ain’t all that fast either, and weak as hell, only 8 reps at 225 lbs!
Average 40 time is 4.6 – only 31 inch vertical jump too.

Madu also has some pretty good hands. Bob Stoops moved him to wide receiver one season just to get him on the field and he might have stayed there if it weren’t for injuries at the running back position.

  10. the_buc_realist Says:

Pump up Madu, let him run wild in preseason, then trade for draft pick.

  11. lightningbuc Says:

Madu is the second coming of Kareem Huggins

  12. ben Says:

combine numbers mean nothing, look at jared allens

  13. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Says:

Sure the combine numbers mean something, or they would not do the tests:)
I am sorry, 8 reps of 225 is a weak ass dude.
His vertical and broad jump do not indicate explosive strong legs either, probably why he goes down Huggins style, with simple arm tackles.
Now Smith, he is an entirely different animal, with speed AND Strength.
Smith is 15 lbs bigger, much faster, and much stronger.
Madu is a decent blocker, but then, so was Cadillac Williams.
Before I would keep Madu, I would bring back Caddy.

  14. ben Says:

jared allen only had 13 at the combine at DE and he would throw you around.those numbers dont always translate to on the field football speed or functional strength “i would bring back caddy”…yeah lets get joey galloway back too…he’s a burner….lol he could run a 4.3 today …umm no

  15. Jonny 3.3 Says:

Mossis Madu looked mediocre to bad last season. I don’t care if he is a little better than how he looked, but obviously the guy even as an athlete isn’t all that good to deserve a roster spot. Even Michael Smith, who everyone here is very high on, has elite straight line speed, but lacks the quickness that makes athletes like him special.

  16. Jglazer Says:

Frankly would have liked to see what Madu could do last year given our pathetic performance. Agree with some folks that he showed some flash in preseason….then crickets.

  17. Scubog Says:

Coach Schiano said what he has to say. What should he say? “Madu is what we call a “camp body”, he has no chance.”
