Barber Learning From New Schiano World Order

May 19th, 2012

The Ronde Barber move to safety is such a great learning experience for the Bucs’ young defense. All these young guys get to watch how a future Hall of Famer approaches learning not only a new defensive system but a new position.

Somehow, if the Bucs can just watch and emulate the example of old-man Barber, Joe suspects things will work out just fine.

Interestingly, bearded Barber says he’s not just soaking in a new position, but he’s learning stuff from the New Schiano World Order that he didn’t see from Tony Dungy, Mike Tomlin, Raheem Morris, Chucky and others.

“This is a learning opportunity for me. I’ve learned stuff about defense, I’ve learned stuff about football that I hadn’t necessarily gotten from my other three coaches,” Barber said. “So this is not only fun it’s a big challenge.”

Barber’s comment was delivered as part of the latest Scott Smith video on Buccaneers.com. Click here to watch. There are plenty of looks at Barber in practice and, if you pay attention, you’ll see a one-hand catch from Mark Barron.

So what new things about football has Barber learned from Greg Schiano? Joe would love to hear that answer.

This a perfect position switch for Ronda. This could extend his career 2-3 more years. He can play the run, play man, and cover the field like he has his whole career like he has in the cover 2 defence.

  2. Shayne Says:

    @ Marks comment
He might be able to play the run, but not very good. Lets face it ronde has always been a coverage type of guy and never really had a huge impact on the tackle statline. Still, hes a football player and a professional for many years so I think he can pick up the saftey position pretty quickly. Lets see how he preforms in training camp and in our pre-season games.

  3. Dew Says:

Joe, help me out here. If Ronde is to make the Hall of Fame I think he needs some stats that stand out. Doesn’t he have like 30 interceptions for a TD and 30 sacks. Something like that? Anyway, playing safety might help him build that stat and have a better chance at getting in the Hall.

  4. Bobby Says:

If Ronde doesn’t make the HOF based on what he’s already done then I don’t know what to say. He’s already had a HOF career in my opinion.

    Dew:

While Joe firmly believes Ronde is a Hall of Famer, he surely won’t get in on the first ballot. Don’t think one year playing safety is going to change anyone’s mind if he should/shouldn’t be in Canton.

  6. Colorado Buc Says:

    Joe,

I disagree, Ronde has done plenty to be considered a first ballot HOFer. Not going to bore you with the stats, i’m sure you already know them. My question is why don’t you believe he is?

  7. eric Says:

Now there is an all pro attitude.

Rather than thinking he knows everything he takes in what he can from Schiano with an open mind to improve.

    After all these years.

Lets spread a whole lotta that around.

  8. Stanglassman Says:

Ronde just exudes intelligence, confidence and is such an inspiration. He has done things statistically in this league that no other corner back has never done, first ballot HOF without a doubt.

  9. Hawaiian Buc Says:

Look guys, we all love Ronde. In no way shape or form is he getting in the Hall of Fame on the first ballot. That is ridiculous to even think so. That doesn’t mean I don’t think he’s worthy, because I do, but it simply won’t happen. In fact, he is regarded as a borderline Hall of Fame player, period (which I know is ridiculous, but it’s reality. He’s considered a system player, which is the stupidest argument I can think of, but it’s the way many feel). Borderline guys don’t get in on the first ballot. First ballot is for the extremely elite, and Ronde isn’t that. I think he will eventually get in, but give up the thought he gets in first ballot.

  10. js1506 Says:

Like Hawaiian Buc i love Ronde (own a jersey of him) but i don’t see Ronde making it to the Hall of Fame any time soon. He’s no Mr. Derrick Brooks who has a clear road to canton hopefully first ballot (dream scenario for any bucs fan would be warren sapp not making it on the first, but on his second attempt and brooks making it on the first try… entering inmortality the same way they entered the league in 1995… together). He’s like John Lynch. A very good player but, not HOF. and voters are really hard on CBs. and Safeties. Just saying.

Aside from Deion, name a cornerback who was elected first ballot? Doesn’t often happen. Mel Blount may have been one of the greatest cornerbacks to ever play the game and he was not a first-ballot guy (elected in his second year of eligibility).

Ronde is overshadowed by others on the Bucs defense like Sapp, Brooks, Lynch and perhaps Simeon Rice.

Does Joe believe he is a Hall of Famer? Sure. Does Joe believe Ronde will be first-ballot? No way.

  12. Colorado Buc Says:

Good point, of course I am completely bias and think they should all be first ballot. No way would I put Simeon ahead of Barber, but point taken on not many corners making it 1st time around.
