Greg Schiano Likes The Play Of Gerald McCoy

April 16th, 2012

How important of a player is Bucs defensive tackle Gerald McCoy? Well, Joe will get into that a bit deeper later today.

But the Bucs record with GMC in the lineup speaks volumes. When GMC lines up on Sundays, the Bucs are 11-8. When he is not in uniform, the Bucs are a ghastly 3-10.

Bucs coach Greg Schiano has studied tape of GMC and has come out impressed with how GMC disrupts plays and penetrates, so Schiano told Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times.

“I’m excited to coach Gerald,” he said. “He plays defensive tackle the way I like. He comes off the ball with a flat back, he’s a penetrating guy who can change direction. We’ve got to get him back healthy and keep him healthy. I think he can be a dominant force if we can just get some miles underneath him, some plays.”

There was a difference when GMC was playing last year, the record and the play of the defense reinforces this.

Still, not even the biggest cheerleader would deny that GMC has to stay on the field this season for the Bucs to rise out of the quagmire that was the grotesque 10-game losing steak to finish last season.

If GMC stays healthy he is Pro Bowl material, if he is injured again he is a bust…imo

  2. bucfanjeff Says:

I’m a big McCoy fan, always have been, but yes he must stay healthy.

I would never label him a ‘bust’ because that label, to me, that implies he doesn’t have the talent and intelligence to play. Thus far though, he is very injury prone.

  3. princespanky Says:

After Schiano has bluntly told Blount (haha puns) what he thinks about his ball handling skills I don’t think this is Schiano blowing smoke. This could be a really good sign if GMC stays healthy. Now if Sheriff Schiano comes out and says that he likes the way Quincy Black plays after he watches tape we should all go hide in the corner and keep our TV’s off all season.

  4. the buc realist Says:

Maybe this is Schiano’s way of buttering up Dominik so he will keep shopping for a Linebacker.

  5. Kujolw84 Says:

I like Mccoy. Hopefully he has been studing tape and the playbook while he’s been hurt. His injuries are minor and rare. He should be fine this season. The line will be better with Claiborne, Mccoy, Price, and Bowers and better coaches and an offseason.

  6. Jessup Says:

In two years he has torn both his biceps….that just seems like something that is going to keep happening. Might consider drafting Josh Chapman or Mike Martin in the 3rd round.

  7. Meh Says:

That’s my opinion of McCoy too. He is a force when he’s in the game. When he’s out, our run defense completely collapsed.

I really, really hope he can stay healthy moving forward.

  8. Miguel Grande Says:

The Bucs have promised that they would address any draft mistakes through free agency. It appears to me as a casual observer that that they have relegated GMC to a back up position. We’ll know that for sure if they draft another tackle.

There is no mention of his rehab, increased strength, workout regimen or recovery. Maybe, they are using the media to light a fire under his fat butt. It seems that they may be challenging him. It may be that with a guaranteed contract and two bad wings he may just ride off into the sunset. I hope I’m wrong.

The propaganda trains moves on . . .

This is the same quote used in a virtually identical JBF article days ago. Sounds like Schiano is saying something new.

The exact same thing can be said about Cody Grimm – who actually has played well.

I “think” hd can be dominant force, by definition admits that he doesnt “know” that he is a dominant force. The point: the quote proves he hasnt played well – its just spin by the prop machine.

Fyi- schiano is helping out Dom – bc by saying GMC has been bad so far Dom would look like a bigger idiot – not good for their relationship.

  10. BigMacAttack Says:

On one hand you have Thomas. On the other, you have Schiano.

    Thomas? Schiano?

    Thomas? Schiano?

With so much knowledge and expertise, its a difficult choice to make.

  11. Macabee Says:

“Can be” is the operative phrase here. “Will be” is much more predictive. But, that was not said.

“Can be” must be put into the category of potential. Most NFL experts warn about the use of potential as a measurement of expected success. They suggest that the best measurement is production. And that’s where McCoy still has a lot to prove.

I still support him, but this year will put a stamp on his resume as to whether he will ever be a “dominant force”.

  12. Capt. Tim Says:

    Lmao!
If stupidity were B.S., this post would look like the friggin RainForest!

McCoy is, and has been, our most dominant defensive player. So much so, that we are incapable of playing without him.

Yes. Hopefully he can stay healthy. But Dts never do.
No one could answer my last riddle- our record with, and without McCoy- until Joe did so today

    Let’s try another
How many DTs- that started day one, game one- played all sixteen games last year? Not rotational players, or second string- how many starters played every game in the pits..
    Answer will surprise ya.

  13. OAR Says:

    Bigmac
You should wash one of those hands!

  14. thomas 2.2 Says:

Capt. Tim Says: “McCoy is, and has been, our most dominant defensive player. So much so, that we are incapable of playing without him.”

Tim: since mccoy has been on the team we have played the Saints 4 times – the team is 2-2. Both wins came when Gerald did NOT play, noth losses came when he did play.

Last year, the most dominant forces on our front 7 in 2011 were Clayborn, Bennett and Price, until week 16 when it was Bowers. Our back 7 was terrible, although Ronde was our best player there when Cody was out.

Gerald had a good game last year againstv the Colts who had their entire O lIne injured and Gerald matched up against a Guard who was just promoted from the practice squad and did not play college fottball, except for that game he stunk as usual.

  15. Bucnjim Says:

    ^^^^Thats funny! ^^^^^

  16. Bucnjim Says:

This season coming up will decide the fate of so many of our young players. Was it Raheem & the system (or lack of) or was it the fact that these guys really are not that good? The GM better hope it was the coach and the system!

  17. rdbucfan Says:

    Joe and Tim,

The same can be said about Cody Grimm, our record is basically the same without Grimm as it is without McCoy. It really hurt our defense having both out the last 2 years. Our back 7 isn’t as bad as everyone said they are with McCoy and Grimm healthy. With that said it is against their agenda to select Claiborne if the back 7 plays better with Grimm and McCoy in the game.

I can’t wait to see our D with a healthy Grimm, McCoy, Clayborne, Bowers and Price. With all of them healthy, a real HC and a real defensive scheme this defense with the same players can be a much improved unit. The spacing in our defense the last couple of years under the inept Raheem Morris was absolutely horrible. The players were spaced so far apart it made gang tackling almost impossible. It’s like Raheem was game planning to help the opposing offensive coordinators.

The back 7 will be much improved with the returning players as long as they stay healthy. We need to finish the offense by picking Richardson and then add depth to the defense and work on replacing Barber and Talib over the next 2 drafts and free agency.

  18. raphael Says:

@2.2 Bucs didn’t win a game last year with Mccoy out…..

  19. ElioT Says:

McCoy is not a world beater by any stretch and he better get healthy and make a consistent impact for all 16 games next year. However I went to the Lions, Falcons and Saints home games last year and singled McCoy out with the field glasses several times. Now I am no talent NFL scout but the dude was extremely disruptive, physical, aggressive and quick off the ball. I remember saying “McCoy looks like an animal out there!”

If he can stay healthy and play a whole season like he did in the first four games of 2011, he will become a pro-bowl DT. I think if he’s injured again were screwed!

  20. ClayBURN94 Says:

Damn did we make a mistake in hiring Schiano who has been in Football for his whole life instead of THOMASS being a pretend lawyer is whole life. Smh

  21. Garv Says:

Why does it matter what the head coach thinks? Since when does anything Coach Schiano says compare to the constant negativity and annoying trolling of the 2.2 jackwagon?

After all, don’t qualifications count these days?

I look forward to seeing what the new staff can do with this team and certainly have not given up on McCoy. Let’s see what he can do healthy for a length of time.

  22. BigBear Says:

@thomas 2.2 Did they change the schedule so that we only play NO 16 times in a row?

McCoy has shown why he is a key to this defense and he will do it again as long as he can stay healthy. the bicep thing shouldnt ever happen again but theyll be stronger atleast. other than something that was determined to be genetic and is likely now corrected is he has a sprained ankle….i think he will be fine in the upcoming year.

  23. Eric Says:

If they could measure penetrating flat backness, McCoy might be a pro bowler.

I always leaned toward sacks, tackles, and durability, for the third overall pick in the draft.

No mention of the pop warner styled arm tackling. I hope they got that fixed.

  24. Chris FWC Says:

His line penetration is great. He just needs more vision. Excited and young. He’s excitung.

  25. Eric Says:

Better start happening soon or he is in danger of going off the chart on the bust-o-meter.

  26. Bobby Says:

I had to laugh at Miguel Grande….”looks like they’ve relegated McCoy to backup.” Sure they have Miguel…..they do that with all #3 picks rehabbing off of injuries. happened with Matthew Stafford remember. Just faded off into the sunset after two years of injuries…..no wait! I guess it didn’t did it??! Is it too much to ask for people to actually ‘think’ before they post so we don’t have to wade through all this insanity before we get to an actual post that contributes to logical thought….

  27. Thomas2.2 Says:

Mccoy missed the Saints win with a high ankle sprain – so that is a win without Mccoy?

  28. Pete Dutcher Says:

Don’t you guys know? Thomas knows more about football than Coach Schiano!

    (not)

Honestly, Thomas…you have a very tiring personality. I really do not understand why Joe has not IP Banned you just to give the rest of us a reason to celebrate.

I wonder if Joe can be bribed into doing it…?

Anyway, I hate to say it, but Thomas is right and Capt. Tim was mistaken. GMC was not the best player on defense last year (overall)…Clayborn was.

But I think GMC runs a close second…and was probably the best while he was actually on the field.

I’m sure when GMC stays healthy (finally) and started dominating in every game, Thomas will use revisionist history or simply avoidance to cover up how wrong he has been.

You do realize, Thomas, when that happens, any and all credibility you have will be out the window and you will be a complete laughing stock. Know that almost makes me want to forget the IP Banning thing…almost.

  29. Eric Says:

Hey if everyone on here had to know as much as Schiano to comment, it would be a short list of available contributers.

As far as laughing stocks, a lot of these highy knowledgable folks were the ones calling for Raheem Morris to become the next Chuck Noll.

My sides still hurt laughing about that one!!!!!!!!!!!!

  30. Thomas2.2 Says:

And another missed game with injury not bicep.

  31. Thomas2.2 Says:

How many NFLers paid over 20 million were placed on the IR in each of the last 2 years missing considerable portions of both seasons?

  32. BigMacAttack Says:

I still say Raheem was playing against a stacked deck. He coached a team that was cut to the bone monetarily. His number one problem I feel was that he was too buddy buddy with his players. I think it started when he was a DB coach and probably needed that close relationship with the players, an arm to lean on when they were hating Chucky. The problem is when you go from that role to head coach, you can’t just turn off the buddy system. It was his downfall and the total lack of discipline the grew from fraternization. I think if Raheem had taken over another team, other than one he had been coaching in a lessor role, he could have had a clean slate, no baggage, and a better starting point. I don’t think Raheem is the greatest coach, but I think he is a good coach that learns from his mistakes. My one regret with Raheem’s tenure was the bad PI call in the Lions’ game which kept the Bucs from the playoffs. I still believe that had that team got into the playoffs they could have gone very far, just like the Packers. Theyreally had some mojo going in 2010′. Most of you will disagree with me, but I don’t care, I know what I saw on the field, and I liked it. Raheem has been given too much of the blame for 2011′ when I think Dom and the Glazers were responsible for about 70% of the problems, with no FA’s, lack of spending, cutting Cadi, and not finding a veteran replacement for Ruud, as well as putting faith in Quincy Black byt Dom that was misdiagnosed.

  33. SensibleBuc Says:

” think it started when he was a DB coach and probably needed that close relationship with the players, an arm to lean on when they were hating Chucky. The problem is when you go from that role to head coach, you can’t just turn off the buddy system.”

BOOM. EXACTLY. I had the exact same thought but haven’t been able to articulate it well enough. Well done.

    @ Pete Dutcher & Mr. 2.2:

Last Year’s most “dominant” or “Least horrendous” Player on the D:

    1. CLayborn
    2. Michael Bennett
    3. Price
    4. GMC

  35. sharkcoasttactical.com Says:

He will always be labeled as injury prone, until he proves he can play without getting injured.

So, we do better when hes plays? Okay..duh, hello? FYI, we’re supposed to play better with him. That is what he gets paid to do. He was the #3 pick.

Here’s the deal:he gets hurt and misses games. It doesn’t matter what he “can” do or “will” be or the hang ups we have for him being a goof ball on twitter. A #3 pick who’s been on IR for two years in a row is BAD no matter how you wanna look at it.

I’d love for him to come out of the gates and be a monster but the odds are he will get hurt again.

They way people talk about GMC on here is amazing. Y’all sound like a dork who doesn’t get that his girlfriend is cheating on him with the pool boy or the loser who hangs out all day at Hooters because the bartenders are his “friends” and really want to hear about how it is in Michigan in the off season.

  36. Bobby Says:

@sharkcoasttactical.com ….I’m betting that Detroit doesn’t feel that way about Matthew Stafford. What a stupid comment. Didn’t I ask people to think before they post??!!!? My gosh, how idiotic some of this crap is. So because someone is injured that makes them bad players??? Sure, a simpleton, a moron, an idiot, a buffoon, an imbecile would think that way. Which one do you want me to call you??

  37. BigMacAttack Says:

I think you just called him “all of the above”. A little harsh, eh?

  38. sharkcoasttactical.com Says:

  39. Bobby Says:

Wow…..devestating comeback……That was about as clever as your posts about McCoy. Don’t worry, we don’t require you score above a 4 on your wonderlic to post here. Thomas still posts too so you have peers…
