“Liking It’s Not Going To Be Enough”

March 30th, 2012

You better have the right mindset if you want to remain a Buccaneer. That’s the message Greg Schiano seems to be sending these days.

Like football and come to work hard each day? That might not keep you on the roster. You better love the damn game.

Schiano talked to the Detroit Free Press about Eric Wright’s versatility and makeup, and unveiled a deeper layer of his philosophy.

“He can do the things that we’re going to ask him to do in man coverage,” Schiano said. “A lot of guys can play zone coverage; it changes your skill set when you need to play man coverage, and I think he runs very well. And he’s a football guy.

“One of the biggest things that will be evident pretty quickly is that guys who love the game will be on our team. Liking it’s not going to be enough at our place. There’s nothing wrong with people who like it. There’s guys who like it, and there’s other guys who love it. The love it guys lose track of time when they’re doing it, and that’s the kind of guys we want.”

Joe wonders what will happen to the Bucs that don’t love football. Surely, the roster has some of those guys, so one would have to assume there will be some unexpected cuts.

Raheem Morris preached “mentality before reality.” Schiano seems to saying “mentality or find a new team.”

I’m really, really, really liking the message that Schiano is sending to the players. Too many guys love the money and not the game. We’ll be seeing some big changes ( ‘cough…Quincy..’ ) this season.

  2. Meh Says:

He’s going to have to cut two thirds of the team.

  3. Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

I am getting a Man Crush on Schiano, lol.
IMHO, he is just what Tampa needs right now, a no nonsense teacher of football.

  4. Yar Says:

Sounds like they hired Gunny Highway! Hoo Ra! Just what they needed.

  5. Capt. Tim Says:

Geez, this guy is spewing “coach speak” like a water sprinkler!
Stuff is straight outta the handbook. He doesn’t get points for creativity, but oddly, I do believe he means it.

I hope he has time to adjust to The NFL, and get rid of the garbage on this team

Contrary to what many brain washed fans think, this team has a lot of bad players. And more than a few of Grudens bad human brings still clinging around- sorta like snot on a window.

Schiano can’t fix this mess in a year. Not even if he was an experienced coach, with an experienced staff- which he ain’t!

  6. Have A Nice Day Says:

Wouldn’t you dislike football if Rah was your coach too?

  7. Pete Dutcher Says:

    @Cap
    I agree.

  8. adam ant Says:

Uh-oh. Capt. Tim is turning into a Negative Nancy. By the way, who are the “bad human beings” from Gruden’s era is left on the team (I can only think of Talib that qualifies as a bad character guy).

  9. OAR Says:

    CaptTim
After that post, you deserve a standing ovation from my tallest finger!
BTW windex will take care that snot problem!

  10. tonytwocents Says:

Schiano’s coach speaks just keeps getting more intense as time goes on.

He reminds me of Alec Baldwin in Glen Gary Glenn Ross talking about brass balls. “What’s my name? F*ck You, that’s my name!”

  11. Bobby Says:

Funny…I don’t remember a lot of this ‘coach speak’ stuff flying around 1 Buc. I guess I just didn’t have the ‘manual’ like some guys have…..

  12. jvato24 Says:

Thats funny Tony … I think the Bucs will get to 1Buc on Monday … It will be laid back … “How was the Offseason” … “How are the Kids” .. “We can use you this way” … Then when the minicamp starts … the whole tone changes … The players are eatin M&Ms gigglin waitin for the intro to start … Then what TonyTwoCents says begins …

Players will be like WTF ??? what is thissss B*llsh*t … I aint gonna listen to this yellin … Then those guys slack and are gone … Eventually a good team comes to Tampa !!!

  13. jvato24 Says:

I think Schiano is gonna go all Ray Liota on these guys ..

  14. Capt. Tim Says:

Oar- reading skills starting ta go? Alzheimer’s?
If you had read my post- I said I think he means it! I like the guy- I wirral he’s in over his head Meybe- but I hope not

You starting to be such a homer, that any post that even remotely isn’t a total kiss ass to the Bucs draws the Finger

Nah, you’ve been Waaay better than that! I think you misread it

From the Gruden years? Black, Talib, Hayes, Tanard.
I can go on, but that’s the problem children.

  15. tonytwocents Says:

    @Capt

To be fair, Gruden did bring us Jeremy Zuttah, Donald Penn, Davin Joseph, Tanard Jackson (I think the 1 year suspension set him straight – he’ll be alright)

But he also brought us Jeremy Trueblood, Jeff Faine, Quincy Black, Geno Hayes, and of course the Aquib “The Ticking Time Bomb” Talib.

So in hindsight, he didn’t set us back, but he definitely didn’t set us up for future success. Bottom line, he doesn’t give a sh!t either way.

  16. Have A Nice Day Says:

@Capt What exactly makes Tanard or Black a “bad human”?

  17. tonytwocents Says:

Oh, and for those of you not familiar with that classic scene from Glen Gary, here’s the mother of all motivational speeches.

@Tony2$0.01 I actually just watched that exact same video right after your original comment lol

  19. Have A Nice Day Says:

    Woops! I meant “Tony$0.02”.

  20. OAR Says:

    CaptTim
No, I reserve my prestigious finger jestures for special occasions. I’m just wondering why all the backhanded posts about our new coach? Seems like you gave Rah much more respect/credit when he was hired and he had WAY LESS experience! I guess, since he got fired and SUCKED as HC, Rah didn’t have that handbook you speak of?

  21. rdbucfan Says:

    oar,

I don’t know if you read Tim’s comments on the Trent Richardson interview but he called Raheem brilliant and yet says he believes Schiano is in over his head.

He calls players from Jon Gruden’s time here that are bad human beings yet he the Bucs to draft Janzen Jackson in the upcoming draft. The same Janzen Jackson that was suspended for taking part in an armed robbery while at Tennessee. Yes, the charges were dismissed (the kids he and his teammates I mean friends robbed were UT students and football fans). Had to quite the football team for undisclosed personal issues (he was fighting drug problems).

I believe I know why Tim doesn’t like Trent Richardson.

    1. Tim is a Tennessee Volunteer fan.
    2. Trent Richardson went to Alabama (Tennessee fans hate Bama more than Florida and Georgia combined)
    3. Trent is actually a good guy.

  22. rdbucfan Says:

    sorry,

    Quit not quite.

  23. OAR Says:

    rdbucfan
I’ve been coming here for a long time now, and have read a lot of posts and I’ve read most of CapTim’s posts but I did miss that one. Hypocritical, classic Tim!

  24. Big Picture Guy Says:

People stressing about Capt. Tim; Satire. Look it up.

Schiano sounds like a life coach with a football playbook, which could also have described Tony Dungy. Hopefully he can live up to the hype he’s spreading, because personally, I’m sold.

A lot of players will either respond or wilt when faced with their wake-up calls this offseason. Glen Gary metaphor…. classic.

  25. BucBuckeye Says:

The more I hear about Schiano, the more I like him. I am beginning to see some parallels between successful, solid/tough coaches like the Tuna, Belichick, Gruden and Coughlin…etc.,

They require love of the game, and passion.

You cannot convince me Raheem Morris wasn’t over his head…he failed after being heralded as someone who could “relate to players” (whatever that means) or was more of a “players coach”…but later on down the road, the same players who supposedly Raheem had “related” to suddenly quit on him?

Coughlin is perennially under attack for being too strict, in The Tuna’s coaching era…he ran off several players who had maximum talent but displayed minimal heart (the term “she” comes to mind)…Gruden had his run in’s with guys like Motor Mouth Keyshawn…but all these guys do is crank out success.

If Schiano turns out to be from the same school of hard knocks, tough-as-steel guys as those tough guys already mentioned (most of whom have already acknowledged their respect of him), our Bucs will return to respectability and our wins will mount, and our owners stadium will be full.

This is the BEST we can hope for this time of year – perhaps there are those that think the way to get the best performance out of pro athletes is to handle them with kid-gloves and accept any type of behavior – so long as they perform on Sunday? But that is the Raheem handled his team, and you see where that got him, and us.

Whether all the fans in Tampa like it or not, there is a new boss in Tampa….and he’s a lot like the old Boss…the one BEFORE Raheem!

And I for one am glad to see it.

Glad Raheem got his shot, nice guy, but not a good head coach. And for those scoring at home – Raheem was the kne in over his head.

  26. Capt. Tim Says:

Oar and Rdbucfan- ok , let’s discuss Schiano and his great “experience”
His entire NFL experience was 7 years ago as a bears secondary coach for a year and a half. He was fired.
Since then he has coached a Rutgers. Where , according to Wiklipedia, the student body is 56,828. The entire school wouldn’t fill the RayJay. It’s a tiny school. He’s played in the Big East – battling Connecticutt, Louisville, Cincinatti, and Louisville to a .500 record over his career.
Meybe even you to zombies might recognize that he’s made a major step up in competition.

For every coach that has applauded this hire, there is an anaylist saying its the worst hire in a decade. They say he won’t be able to go from coaching against those small school guys- to handling all the schemes an NFL team throws at ya.
    Its a legitimate concern.

I actually am starting to believe in this guy more and more. But unlike you puppy love homers- I know he hasn’t done anything yet. He hasn’t called one play, faced one Blitz, picked one starter.
    Nothing

I want him to succeed. He seems like a guy with some character
But could he be Bobby Petrino 2- yeah, real easy

So why don’t you to clueless lil homers take ter fingers, stick em in each others ears, and see if you scrounge up a Brain between you

Because you both are proclaiming yer love, and acting like you know everything, about a guy he has done absolutely nothing in the NFL yet

And that’s ignorant puppy love to the point that in surprised you aren’t filliwinf the guy around town, diving on mud puddles for him

Can you at least wait til he coaches something, before you start the slobber bath!

I hope the guy wins the SuperBowl here. But he’s making such a big leap, only an idiot would start cannonizing the guy!

  29. Capt. Tim Says:

Hey joe! What gives? My extremely cutting retort to these to hockey pucks didn’t post! Help me out-that was too witty to re write! Thanks!!

  30. Capt. Tim Says:

    Oar and Rdbucfan
You two have become some sad lil loves struck homers, if you thought that was a shot at the coach. I’m surprised you two don’t follow him around, throwing yourselves on mud puddles and such!

But since you two know Sooo much about Schiano- let’s discuss what you really know

    Absolutely nothing!

The man has never called a play, picked a starter, faced a defense as a head coach in the NFL

His last experience was 7 years ago. He was the Beats secondary coach for almost two seasons
    They fired him

Since them- he was head coach at Rutgers. A school which- according to Wiklopedia today, has a student body of 56,828.
Could fill RayJay- that is a tiny school
He coached against Louisville, Connecticut, Cinncinatti, and west Virginia!
Against whom he managed a .500 record!

Yet you to are just in love, ain’t ya

I want the guy to win the SuperBowl here. I hope he does!
But for every coach applauding the hire, their is an anaylist calling it the worst hire of the decade- saying he will be the next Bobby Petrino!

So, before you to get excited, slop preying all over the guy, like love sick homers- lets let the man coach!
Let’s see him do something, before you two cannonize him!

  31. Capt. Tim Says:

    Again won’t post!!

  32. Capt. Tim Says:

    Thank you joe!

  33. deminion Says:

    @ capt tim

r u even a fan? jeez weres your optimsm? u have all these thing stats about him but whts your point ?

  34. Capt. Tim Says:

Of course I’m a fan! If you read my post- I’m rooting for the guy!

My point is- this is not a good team. It has huge holes that have not been adressed . Our LBers and CBs are not talented enough to win, and those players shouldn’t even be on an NFL team.

Our coach seems like a good man. But it’s the equivelant of being as A league pitcher, and getting called up to be the number 1 starter- its gonna take him some time

Personally, I feel like I’ve landed in Oz!
Everyone is is talking about this team like it just won the Lombardi, instead of coming off a 4-12 season. With the worst desplay of defense in Buccaneer history- which I have watched every year of

Isn’t this the time to discuss the teams problems, and bitch about what’s not being adressed! Everyone here seems convinced that we are in just fabulous shape! It worries me how they will react if Schiano losses a couple of games. The guy is getting a bad team, with a worse attitude
Yet the posters here act like we’re the Giants!!

Just read Oar and rdBucfans post. They are posting with absolute assurance, what this coach is going to do.
Yet they have haven’t seen him do anything to base that on-
    He hasn’t done ANYTHING yet
It’s a really strange thing to watch
