Talib Welcomed By New Coach

February 23rd, 2012

Injury-prone and trouble-prone cornerback Aqib Talib seemingly had a warm and fuzzy meeting with Greg Schiano recently, so reports TampaBay.com Bucs beat writer Rick Stroud.

No word on whether Talib liked Schiano’s swag or called him “Dawg.”

Schiano held court with reporters at the NFL combine in Indianapolis this afternoon, where Schiano talked a bit about the Talib meeting and expounded on his brand of discipline.

“So if you make the expectations clear, then discipline really isn’t discipline, it’s a choice. You knew if you did this, everything is cool and if you don’t, there’s going to be consequences. That, to me, is not that complicated. But you have to make sure you’re very, very clear on what it is your expectations are,’ Schiano said.

If Joe were a defensive head coach like Schiano, Joe also would be eager to give Talib a fresh look. The guy’s in the last year of a relatively inexpensive contract, and Schiano doesn’t have much to lose. He can always cut Talib. Plus it’s not like the Bucs have anyone — right now — that’s close to Talib’s league on the bench.

of course he wants Talib. Be stupid not to.

  2. HFXBUC Says:

It makes sense… New coach, clean slate and he’s a talent so why not keep him…and cut him if he screws up or if he stays clean keep him. Either way it sends a great message.

  3. Nick Says:

LOL, now its a great message.

  4. ALSTOTTSMART! Says:

I don’t disagree with any of this. I just don’t think Talib has the self control to keep himself out of trouble.

Some people just are what they are. I’d love for Talib to never have a another outburst, or run-in with the law, but……I’m not holding my breath. He’s been embarrasment, time and time again. We’ll see.

  5. jvato24 Says:

I dont think the question is whether we cut him this year. If he stays out of trouble, maybe we trade him but he wont be cut.

The question is, with a good to great season next year and an expiring contract … What then ??

  6. NickinMelbourne Says:

Hopefully Talib didn’t invite Schiano to the gun range and arrange a cab ride for the two.

  7. NickinMelbourne Says:

I say keep him all the way until the trade deadline. Hes got to be worth something other than a felony weapons charge.

  8. mjmoody Says:

Joe you’re preaching to the choir here. And may I say what a practical forum following you have. I have grown tired of wading through reactionary comments on other sites when it comes to Talib. If he makes it through trial-considering the current secondary situation-why wouldn’t the Bucs’ hold on to him. 2013 is a different year, full of different choices.

  9. FreemanBomb5 Says:

Yes! Excellent news that Schiano at least gave Talib the opportunity to hear him out man to man and didn’t just do what media tards want and banish him out of town. Point is the man can flat out play and will most likely not be seen guilty by any jury. The man that he allegedly fired shots at beat his sister earlier in the day, his mother admitted to firing rounds. Should be an easy victory for Talib’s defense attorney.

  10. Macabee Says:

All the coaches are watching tape and evaluating players. After 20 minutes of that E.J. Biggers footage, I would have given him a second chance too!

  11. Capt.Tim Says:

Nickinmelbourne- that’s what I thnk is the smart move. Talib has been given so many chances here, and screwed up everytime. I’d try and trade him to Raheem in DC.

It would be a great statement by Schiano to trade Talib. But he sounds like he made his position clear. Sounds like Talib will finally be held accountable. I hope so
Unforunately, other than Barber- we have no NFL talent in our secondary, so it would be hard to just cut him at this point!

Correcting that huge problem falls on Dom- who Sid nothing to adress it last year. If he repeats that lame attempt at his job again this year- he and Talib should be sent packing together!!

  12. Pete Dutcher Says:

Taliban did not play that well this past year. I don’t really care about the shooting incident. I would have used fists though. The man is a child rapists and woman beater. Frankly the world would not have missed him if Taliban had hit his target.

What I do care about is his constant bad decisions.

It sounds like coach laid down the law. Good.

  13. SilenceTheCritics Says:

Sad to say, even with all the talent he has.. he’s just not worth the trouble anymore. I’d trade him for atleast the 4th round pick we dont have this year but I’m almost positive somebody would give up more than that for his talents alone.

  14. stevek Says:

Great decision to let Talib have another chance for redemption. I would hate to see him finally put it all together fo another club. Pair this guy with a FA, and here we go.

  15. SkookumSmitty Says:

In a way, coaching is like parenting.

Discipline requires realistic measures, in balance with the behavior…But most important is CONSISTENT application of consequences.

If Schiano 1) Set an expectation, 2) CLEARLY delineated what the consequences would be if the expectation isn’t met, and 3) Follows up as indicated if an infraction occurs, this will be fine.

I guess what I am saying is, if we have a GOOD coach, we will see GOOD results from players. Wonder why that didn’t happen under Morris, and why he ‘lost’ the team during the low part of the season?

Because it appears he was not a good parent/coach.

But we won’t know until Talib shows us something.

  16. Capt.Tim Says:

Continuing to give Talib chances, was the beginning of Raheems downfall.

The team has given him too many chances, and he has thumbed his nose at all of them. He has had an incident every year he has been in the league. He’s an idiot. It’s not a matter of if. It’s a matter of when, he screws up again. He’s a major headache, and a very average( at best) talent.

To keep him around, and try to trade him, is a good idea. Why not poison another team.

To give him yet another chance, would show that all the tough talk is just retoric. To change to attitude on this team- you must change it’s principle offenders- the guys who quit last season, and have shown total disregard for their team and teammates!

That would be Talib and Black. If they are still here when the season starts, then they have no intention of changing anything, and don’t care that players quit playing with 9 weeks left in the season.

To let an employee continue to embarrass and disregard his employers policies is a sign of weak supervision.

Isn’t that what we are supposed to be changing?

  17. Thomas 2.2.. Says:

The fastest way to change the undisciplined and unprofessional culture – is to get rid of the undisciplined and unprofessional coaches and players.

We started by firing the main culprit: RahRah.

Next on the list, or very close to next, is Talib. Yes, Biggers is horrible, qb’s audible to plays for receivers Biggers is covering as soon as he walks on the field, but you have 68 million dollars of cap room.

Sign and draft 2 pros. Talib doesn’t want to be here without his buddy rahrah’s no work no accountability environment anyway. Send him to dc.

Talib will show Schiano what he is about soon enough, and there is a good chance ( it is not definitive) that Talib ends up with a conviction which means jail and/or suspension.

  18. Thomas 2.2.. Says:

RahRah showed discipline: when Talib and Winslow repeatedly committed dumb penalties he ignored it until he had a chance to levy a strong punishment – against Brian Price. Lol

Price was one of the hardest working, solid, most disciplined and professional players on the defense – he has one lapse in judgment in his career and rah embarrasses him after excusing it for 3 years for Winslow and Talib.

That said everything about RahRah as a leader, he wasnt one and was clueless.

I can’t wait until the RahRah stories come out – it was truly a comedy of misfits for 3 years.

  19. Apple Roof Cleaning Says:

I bet Talib and Schiano made a deal.

  20. Rrsrq Says:

Give the coaches a chance on this team. Talib has talent, if he messes up, he cuts himself, if he gets convicted, he cuts himself, let free agency play out, let the draft play out, the team needs three quality corners, unless you believe in Biggers, Gaitor or Lewis, really?

  21. thibs5599 Says:

Pete Dutcher…..what are you talking about a child rapist and woman beater, never once has their been anything of that nature about Talib.

Schiano has or will lay down the law, if he does not go to jail which he won’t, he will be back with the Bucs. If he screws up then he is cut simple as that.

  22. barton1017 Says:

i dont mind keepin a gr8 player (when he wants to be) at a gr8 price, now we draft LSU’s Claibourne and have some serious CB’s, havent had that since Kelly and Barber wur lockin it down. and wht not try Sir Ronde at Safety?

  23. Capt.Tim Says:

Thibbs5599- Pete is talking about the shootee- who he always forgets to mention is Talib’s sister’s common-law husband of 5 years.

That is normal behavior for those two- the fightings and beatings. They have a long history. As does Talibs mother- who is also a convicted felon, like Talibs brother in law.

They dont mention that, because they try to present some false image of Talib as the hero- rushing to his poor, innocent sisters’s aid, from some unknown assailant!

The truth is- just another night in thug land.

Not the guy you want representing the team to your kids, despite the BS the thug lovers keep trying to sell. He sucked as a player last year, and quit on the team.

Time ta go okay with Rah, and poison the skins locker room

  24. MTM Says:

Talib has one thing going for him. Low salary. If the Glazers thought they could have saved a lot of dough. His arse would have been sent packing. But I think we all know how its going to turn out with Talib. It will an arrest for smoking a blunt in his car at One Buc Place or something stupid like punching a referee in the back of the head.

  25. Capt.Tim Says:

Again, agree with those saying we trade him, and get what we can.

After last seasons performance, I don’t think we would get anything, even if he was a choirboy off the field.

Terrible play, then quits on team. Plus legal issues!

Doubt anyone but Meybe Rah would take him for free. We might sucker him into it.

Or some of the posters here, who despite every opinion to the contrary, still labor under the opinion that he is a “superstar!!” who has just not been noticed by anyone but them.

Still not one ProBowl vote. .

  26. thibs5599 Says:

Ok i did not that thanks for the clarification.

  27. White Tiger Says:

Lack of discipline has been a constant with this cat since college…not sure he can be reeled back in….but I like Schaino’s approach: clean slate, here are the expectations, you have a clear choice to go along with the new coach, or to continue on your self-destructive path.

Consequences mean you don’t get to opt out of the system. You screw up, you’re gone.

Reminds me of a coach we had around here once…

  28. deminion Says:

I dont care what anyone says glad we kept Talib around he can change im bankin on it, New Regime is gunna have him play up to his potential

  29. FuNkYxMuNkEy Says:

Currently Talib is our best CB by far. That said, his court date is fast approaching. Until then there is really no reason to talk about him. I think the charges will be dropped and he will continue to be a Buc. Whether we trade him is a different story. But that will be after his court date. He could have decent value if he gets off this charge too. He has stayed out of trouble since then and is the best option we currently have. Mo Claiborne could change that. But Talib as a #2 CB would be a great combo with Mo. We still need 3-4 new CBs and atleast 2 or 3 new Safetys.

  30. Joe Says:

Currently Talib is our best CB by far.

That’s a frightening thought and reinforces Joe’s stand the Bucs both need a top-flight free agent cornerback and Mo Claiborne with the fifth overall pick.
