Remembering A Special Super Sunday

February 6th, 2011

Joe can remember it like it was yesterday. The Bucs forever shed the label of “Yucs.” The Bucs were Super Bowl champs.

If anyone wonders why all real men have the NFL Network and why Ed Sabol will be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame this summer, watch this episode of “America’s Game,” produced exclusively by NFL Films for the NFL Network. This video chronicles the Bucs Super Bowl season.

It is presented courtesy of the NFL through it’s video partners with Hulu.com. Enjoy!

We could not buy Buc “stuff” fast enough…the next day

Thanks Joe. It’s a great day to look back to that era. That was a great year but I always felt we got screwed by only having one week between the Championship game and the Super Bowl. And I never knew Jon Gruden’s Father was once a Bucs coach when Jon was a young kid until I watched this.

PS: The last time I went to a Super Bowl game Lombardi wasn’t the trophy, he was the Coach.

I feel slighted that the team was not invited to the White House…
Drew …I have often wondered if the tension between Rich McKay and Jon goes back the way way Jon ( may have been treated by Rich as teens) and just what Jon may have over heard as his mom and dad spoke…about John McCay

  5. Dew Says:

    @RastaMon. That’s an interesting thought.

Two things; that game struck fear into my heart. For years I had said “if the Bucs could just win one Super Bowl before I go I could die happy”. For months after that victory I thought every twinge or pain was a sign of my imminent demise.

The other thing needs to first be prefaced with this; I think Tony Dungy was absolutely the right man to lead the Bucs when the Glazers took over. Does anyone else remember that they first offered Steve Spurrier the moon to take that job? Would we have won a Super Bowl with him?

But, Dungy could only go so far. I think the fact Coach Dungy had one of the great all time defenses in the NFL and later one of the greatest QBs of all time in Manning, and only won one Super Bowl, is telling. I know there are a lot of Gruden haters around but if not for him we would just have another team that almost won it all.

  7. Dew Says:

@Scott. If you watched this video and learned one thing it’s that Jon Gruden knew every Oakland play. It wasn’t even a fair game. But I still love that we won. 🙂

I have seen this multiple times, and that’s just some damn, fine football!

I also have watched multiple times the NFL Network 30-minute Super Bowl show on Super Bowl XXXVII, a microcosm of this one. Also, some damn, fine TV!

The one thing I can’t remember is, why was there only one week that year to prepare instead of the normal two weeks? I’m not complaining, just curious, because I love the fact that it gave Oakland less time to even think about changing anything on offense if they even could have.

I swear to you all, that when they showed Brooks crying on the sideline I did NOT weep. It was just damned dusty in here, all of a sudden.

Love this film, they were a very special team.

It was the best of times here!
Yeah, I think the McKay and Gruden grudge was more of the McKay side of things, with the fact, the Glazers went behind him and hired Gruden. Remember, after Parcels sh*t on us, McKay wanted Marvin Lewis first, and then was set to hire Marucci. I don’t think either of those would have won it for us. Thank you, Glazers for that slick move!

Thx Joe. Let’s do this every year right after the Superbowl. Hopefully next year we’ll get another one. Go Bucs!!!
