“Oh Yeah, This Guy Can Coach.”

February 6th, 2011

The quote above comes from Super Bowl-winning coach Brian Billick.

Billick was not talking about himself. He was talking about former Bucs great linebacker and future Hall of Famer Derrick Brooks.

Brooks earlier this week stopped by the NFL Network set at radio row, which was just a few steps Sirius NFL Radio booth where Brooks was working this week, to talk about the Super Bowl. There, after being pestered by Jim Mora and Billick about coaching, Brooks, for the first time that Joe can remember, didn’t rule it out.

In this videov, Brooks explains in great detail how to stop Ben Roethlisberger and Aaron Rodgers, the quarterbacks of the Steelers and Packers, respectively.

Brooks’ break down has both Mora and Billick swooning.

Brooks could throw a pigskin over them mountains there…

Why not? He’s one of the smartest, most prepared linebackers to ever play the game! We are so lucky to have had him on our team and get to see “the man” play the game and sometimes live! I’m also glad he won the big one! It would have been a shame for a player of his caliber to not have a ring! HOF! Go coach Brooks!

  3. Capt.Tim Says:

Could anything be more appropriate than the ultimate Buc on the Bucs staff?

  4. oar Says:

    That would be AWESOME!

  5. OB Says:

I think he would do it in a heartbeat if an offer came from the Bucs, he would not have to move so all of his prodjects could go on. We need him and he would improve our defense. I hope that the HC & GM are listening or that one of their troops is and they make the offer. John Lynch would also be a welcome addition, he is also a leader who knows the game.

  6. Capt.Tim Says:

I don’t know the details of Derrick Brooks departure from the team. I know it remains one of my worst days as a fan.it rated right up there with losing Doug Williams. The Glazers didn’t screw over Doug, but they set it right. Nothing would sooth any remaining hurt feelings than Bringing Derrick back home to the team- nothing. It doesn’t matter in what capacity, if Derrick is going to work at OneBuc, then Order has been restored to the Pirate Nation. Derrick, and Derrick alone deserves that! No one since Leeroy Selmon has embodied this team’s identity!

  7. LowDownBucFan Says:

im sure he will be honor in the ring soon, btw we should hire him,idk if he would take the job but,to help out the D as assistant

  8. Thomas 2.2 Says:

I sure wish he become involved in some meaningful way. Nothing to say about brooksy other than his play is missed, his leadership left an unfilled void and the young players on d suffered bc of his wrongful departure.

  9. McBuc Says:

He is suppose to be close to Morris, so I am sure Morris and co know. Morris has also said that Brooks has a spot with the team whenever he is ready.

  10. espo Says:

Although I agree DB can and should coach, I tend to ignore anything Brian Billick says. He released a Super Bowl winning QB and replaced him with someone whose momma named him Elvis…. some things are unforgiveable.

  11. RustyRhino Says:

I am glad that Brooks can still walk around and laugh, 55 did change the game NO DOUBT! His departure was rough, but needed. Brooks is a warrior and he would not have not played and been the “back-up” not in Brooks’s makeup.
Now that he is out of the game he loves he is still is involved. Talking about it on the radio, coaching his sons team. I do remember that Coach Morris offer to Brooks to be a part of the crew again. Be that LB coach LB assistant coach, quality control whatever! When Brooks is ready. On Derrick’s terms.
He said his time is taken up by his foundations and charity work in the Tampa Bay area. and he is on the radio and now has offers to do some Play-book sessions on NFL network. Happy for him and I am not sorry that he is gone, watching him hobble after a player is not derrick brooks that I know and want to remember. His Leadership will never be replaced he set the mark there for fellow members of the crew to emulate.
I would love to have him on our Staff coaching or Management. In due time I think he will again be a part of this crew.

  12. Capt.Tim Says:

Espo- lol, entirely true!! That never made sense. Rusty Rhino- I agree he will someday be part of the staff, meybe sooner than later! With all the young players, it would be great to have Derrick aboard, just reminding the kids how to be a Buc!

  13. Lucas Jackson Says:

Brooks could certainly be the exception, but there is a reason that great players rarely make great coaches.

  14. Apple Roof Cleaning Says:

Would Love to See Brooks return to Tampa again as a coach or scout!

  15. jvato24 Says:

From what I have read in the past .. Morris or Domink have stated there is an offer for Brooks to return to the team in some capacity but he has yet to accept the offer.
