Vincent Signing Comes Cheap, Low-Risk

July 11th, 2010

The well-connected folks at NationalFootballPost.com claim today that new Bucs guard Keydrick Vincent falls under the category of low-budget signing.

No guaranteed anything for Vincent, although he will get his share of free food while he sweats his rump off during two-a-days in Tampa.

Although there were reports that Vincent’s two-year contract is worth a total of $4.5 million, a league source with knowledge of the situation told National Football Post that the deal includes no signing or roster bonus or guaranteed money.

Vincent is due $1 million base salaries in 2010 and 2011. The contract does include incentive clauses based on playing time that could boost his earnings.

Now Joe knows that legions of cynical Bucs fans will say, “See. See. More evidence the Glazers are skimping on the Bucs. They only signed Vincent because he comes cheap.” But Joe’s not interested in that rhetoric today.

The signing is what it is: an experienced player coming to a team in desperate need of experienced depth on its offensive line.

Now those who want to moan about how Vincent doesn’t fit into the Bucs stated “plan” will get much more agreement from Joe.

A win for everyone. Bucs fill a need but don’t get shafted in case Vincent doesn’t pan out or doesn’t play. Not good enough to wash the Clayhands and Sims signings out of my mouth but good for now.

  2. eric Says:

With all due respect Mr. Joe, the real “plan” and cheapness are inextricably intertwined.

Obviously, since Mr. Vincent is unlikely to participate in the far away “10 wins per season” dynasty, this is totally inconsistent with the stated plan, at least the most recently stated one. However, it serves the purposes of the real one.

With the Glazer boys, one must look at what they do, and not what they say.

That being said, welcome aboard Mr. Vincent, I have no problem with the signing and hope he plays well. Just wish there were some other team changing free agents or RFA’s on the roster, as there could and should be, as well as a legitimate NFL Head Coach. I wont bore everyone with my usual litany of available talent lining up elsewhere, my Sunday present to Joebucsfan.com………..

  3. thomas Says:

    well said Eric.

Vincent maybe decent but surely wont be around when these weaka– fans will finally hold this organization to a standard of winning in 2012.

Has anyone ever been a part of a sports town that just accepts ownership saying we need 3 years to be competitive in the era of free agency?

NFL history is replete with examples of 1-year turn arounds, however they don’t come cheap.

It is often embarrassing to be a part of this soft sports community.

  4. The D Says:

Ive been following the site for a while now just because this is the only place that gives news about the Bucs on a daily basis. To all of the “haters” and I think you know who you are (im not saying you are) my question to you all is this: what is it exactly that you want the Bucs to do? I see people complain about everything single move they make, but im just wondering what you all want us to do. Im curious.

  5. admin Says:

    Joe here,

Eric wrote: ” I wont bore everyone with my usual litany of available talent lining up elsewhere, my Sunday present to Joebucsfan.com………..”

What kind of gift is that?
Next time Joe prefers cash, women and beer, not necessarily in that order.

  6. McBuc Says:

Thomas…Please go route for Atlanta. When and if the Bucs start winning again, you cqan return as a Bucs fan. Good luck cheering on the 1 year turn around Atlanta Falcons, we will miss you.

  7. Patrick Says:

Seriously, who gives a crap if they’re going against “the plan”? Some people are taking this way too literally. I’m actually almost shocked they signed a veteran after they said 28 was “too old” for AB.

I wish they would bring in more older, experienced, proven guys this. This signing is ok, nothing great, but he has to better than Zuttah. If he was a guy that helped block for that amazing Panthers running game, then he has to have some talent i imagine.

But still, if he wasn’t cheap he wouldn’t be here.

They need to go sign Flozell Adams and have a nice veteran backup to Trueblood.

  8. Louie the HATER! Says:

@JimBuc, you want to mock my “cheap” comment now?

  9. Mauha Deeb Says:

I was cautious at first given the amount but hearing that nothing is guaranteed is pretty sweet deal. He will make a great back up and can play in case Zuttah fails or gets injured. I am not excited but I am certainly not upset with this pick.

  10. eric Says:

    Joe,

Like if I had cash, woman, or beer, I would be posting on your cite in July?

    🙂

  11. BigMacAttack Says:

Patrick, I’ve always liked Flozell, but his stats last year were beyond bad. He was almost the Michael Clayton of offensive tackles. That’s not to say he can’t comeback stronger.

Dominick said they would make smart moves that helped the team. This sounds like it met their criteria, for the most part. Age???

  12. admin Says:

    Joe here,

Eric, you have a fine point there. 😉

  13. tampa2 Says:

    Joe,
I thought “the plan” was to get rid of any veteran aver the age of at least 28 (ie Bryant). Now they bring in a 32 year old. I guess the “real” plan is just as we suspected all along. The nothing down dollar a week plan! And kids too young to realize that their Head Coach is not a real Head Coach! If Eric is a lawyer and is broke in July, that implies that he is a divorce lawyer and only represents the Husbands. In Florida, that will break you every time!

  14. Negative Nancy Says:

    WTH is a weaka fan?

  15. RahDomDaBest Says:

I think some of you guys are making too big of a deal out of this signing. We had a need, the off-season is near ovewith… we needed depth. I find it reasonable.

Of course I’m on Patricks side on this…. if we really want to help Freeman and none of our LTs are truely in the bigger picture (ie we use a 1st round pick oj a LT in 2011) then we should go ahead and sign Flozell Adams too….. at least try to win.

But not winning can be tolerated so long as Raheem is let go sooner than later. If it takes losing to send Raheem on his way, then I’d rather lose now… so in those regards, the Bucs should go into the season with a basketball player for a LT.

  16. thomas Says:

    @Negative Nancy:

the answer to your question is: Jimbuc, Captain Dim, fans who gargle and swallow org b.s., ignore the obvious and foolishly defend an org that just went 3-13, has the lowest paid and least qualified HC and GM, no significant $ spent in the offseason to improve the roster (and dont anyone say draft pick $ – every team spends draft pick $, no team has ever not made a pick so as to not pay the contract), a bogus “plan” that is being sold as a young rebuild when it is in fact – “strategy” to go cheap.

That is weak. Fans in strong sports towns pressure ownership when it is clear that they are disserving the fan base. See Manu Fans – I love their passion and respect their intensity – ask them how they feel about their owners, AND THEY ARE WINNING!

  17. Mr Hands Says:

Bucs don’t sign free agents, people whine.

Bucs do sign free agents, people whine.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have probably some of the worst fans in the NFL. Some of you guys make Eagles fans look good.

  18. Patrick Says:

    @Mr. Hands

All teams have fans that complain. It’s a very normal thing with sports fans. They’re not “haters” as many people on here like to put it. They care about their team and just want the best for them. If the “haters” hate everything about the Bucs, why do they come to joebucsfan everyday to read about the latest info??

The “haters” thing really has gotten annoying.

  19. thomas Says:

    Mr Hands:

I completely agree with you re “worst fans” but for a different reason (see infra).

I think that if you care to read the comments, we all pretty much have no problem with the signing, particularly as I suggested when there is no guaranteed money.

The fact that was pointed out by many is that – some commenters on this site argued that Antonio Bryant wasn’t signed b/c he didn’t fit the go young/rebuild plan. Well this guy is much older, so I guess the plan isnt “young” – so what is it. This guy will be paid 4 mill, AB signed a 20 plus million deal. The common denominator – Cash.

We want the team drafting, trading for, signing the best available players – period.

  20. Joe Says:

    The D:

Thanks a bunch for your continued support. Joe very much appreciates it!

  21. JimBuc Says:

LOL. That’s all I can say.

  22. lightningbuc Says:

“One Buck” Place and the Dollar Store are synonymous – places to go to find not so high quality at a low, low price.

  23. King Says:

I think this league should have more signings like this. Think about it. If someone told you that I am going to pay you MILLIONS of dollars to come work for me, and I will pay you millions more if you actually perform well? And to top it off if you perform well you will have thousands of fans within the community and country? What is wrong with that? I get that many of these players have short careers with the potential to harm themselves, but so does your average construction worker and they don’t get a signing bonus to show up to work.

  24. JimBuc Says:

    Joe said:

“Now those who want to moan about how Vincent doesn’t fit into the Bucs stated “plan” will get much more agreement from Joe.”

Joe, if the Bucs “plan” is to go young, were there any UFA guards that they could have signed now (in July) that would have fit with the “plan”? I don’t know the answer, but thought you might.

  25. RustyRhino Says:

Well Well, we go out and get a starting player from a division rival, who as we have all seen if we have watched any of the last several years of them running the ball across the league, is a good guard. Big, with a mean streak, a good player who has played on several different teams that we just so happen to play this season.

Is he old? Well he is 32. Can he still play? Well training camp is coming up. I for one am really looking forward to him playing with us not against us.
We have a good RG we have had a good LG but he had personnel issues to plow over. Zuttah has had good and bad seasons playing, lets see what Keydrick Vincent can do.

Vincent is 6’5″ 325 Veteran LG from a Division Rival who has had a few seasons of success against the NFC South DL’s. Who’s knowledge and experience we now have in our locker room..Film room…
Cheap? yeah it was a steal!!!

Blast those running lanes this season Vincent i can’t wait to watch it happen!!!

  26. BigMacAttack Says:

Mr hands, I agree with everything but the Eagles’ part. I have buds who are diehard Eagles’ fans. The Eagles have the best fans anywhere. They always go to the games, no matter how bad their team is/was. Always there complaining pissin and moanin, yelling screaming, but always there, at the games, in the bars, all over everywhere. Our best fans couldn’t hold up to their worst on our best day. Offer people in Tampa free Buc tickets, they will first ask you “Where are they, good seats?”, then they’ll him haw around and make some excuse that they have to mow the grass or fix a door knob. Our fans suck as a whole. Not any of you guys. You’re all here. But we personally are so loud at the games, people ask us to keep it down. The old A-hole that used to sit in front of me moved down several rows last year because we were blowing him out. He literally wore ear plugs before that. What the poor bastard doesn’t know is that we moved down this year and should be right behind him again, and of course will be louder than ever.

  27. Patrick Says:

I like the Vincent signing. Zuttah is ok but just isn’t a starter.

    Davin Joseph. Check.
    Jeff Faine. Check
Jeremy Trueblood……good, but needs to stop committing penalties. Check
    Vincent. Check
    Dotson. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!

Give Penn a contract now! The contract doesn’t have to be outrageous. They can still give him a good contract and keep the guarenteed money low. Not having Penn around will make all the difference in our offense next year. How are we supposed to truly know how good Freeman is if we’re not surrounding him with success?? I mean it’s already bad enough that he has a bunch of unreliable rookies as his receivers and that he lost his only proven weapon in AB. Don’t make it worse by not even giving him time to look downfield.

  28. JimBuc Says:

Patrick — the Bucs have offered Penn a contract and it is an offer that is too good to refuse. Penn will play.

Anyone care to try to answer my question to Joe? Here you go:

“Joe, if the Bucs “plan” is to go young, were there any UFA guards that they could have signed now (in July) that would have fit with the “plan”? “

  29. RahDomDaBest Says:

This really is a not that big of a deal. We added depth.

There REALLY must be nothing to talk about.

Joe, how about Paul Hoilman, the Devil Rays 49th round draft pick… the guy won the CWS Home Run Derby jacking double digit big flys.

He is only 6’5″ 250 lbs as a Junior!

Andre Dawson kept saying, why was he not drafted higher??? What were the scounts not seeing? As he mashed home run after home run, a la Mark McGuire style.

The Rays should just pay him and not let him go back to school.

  30. jarrett Says:

look jimbuc just because noone knows the names of any free agent guards left in july doesnt mean this doesnt fit the plan, I m sure their are some undrafted free agent guard they could of tried to develop. They are not winning the super bowl right. This move basically goes against your entire arguement the last six months. So address that fact jimbuc, dont ask us to name a better option. By your logic we should of kept sergio render and developed him because it is the plan to develop youth and we are not winning now anyways.

  31. RahDomDaBest Says:

    Joe…. suplemental draft article.

    Steve White, rate the players.

I’d like to have something to ponder over at lunch tomorrow.

Do the work… and we’ll read. I’ll click 500 times tomorrow…. that should net you some Ad Revenue.

  32. JimBuc Says:

Jarrett — I did look. To my knowledge there are no UFA guards that would fit with the “plan.” Could be wrong, but if not: that is the point I was trying to make. Bunch of people screaming that the Vincent signing is counter to the plan (because they are angry about AB or money or whatever), but there are no UFA guards that would fit with the plan.

    Stupid, much ado about nothing.

Proof of that is your response. You are actually suggesting that the Bucs should have picked someone up off the street? LMAO. That is too freaking funny. Because there are a bunch of angry dopes looking for a chance to call out “HYPOCRISY,” Dom should not have signed Vincent but instead picked someone off of the street. Do you hear how dumb that sounds?

Vincent is 32 BUT he also played on a division rival that literally ran over us for the last two years. Dom got him FOR NOTHING to fill a big area of need and all the people on this board can do is BITCH. So freakin silly . . .

  33. BamBamBuc Says:

    JimBuc,

The reason nobody can show a unrestricted free agent under the age of 30 available anytime this offseason (much less now) is because most every free agent this offseason was restricted due to the CBA. I’ve done some looking, and there were some UFAs, all were well over 30 (34, 36, etc.). Most anyone in their 20s was restricted, even 29 year old Jamaal Brown was restricted. Logan Mankins (28) restricted. Willie Colon (27) restricted. Khalif Barnes (28) restricted. Not all Guards, looked at all OL, so Tackles and Centers are included. It’s really hard to sign players that don’t exist. Some players will become UFAs if they are released by their teams, but until then there just isn’t much out there.

  34. Joe Says:

    RahDomDaBest:

Supplemental draft is barely worth covering. If the Bucs decide to do something — doubtful — then Joe will have something. Only Woody Cummings has written anything of substance of the supplemental draft and it’s a lof of ifs.

Steve White writes when the mood strikes him. During the season that’s often. Joe’s sure some pearls of wisdom will come from Steve once training camp starts.

Joe hopes you can click on the ads 200 times just for being a loyal reader. 🙂

  35. Joe Says:

    RahDomDaBest:

Joe, how about Paul Hoilman, the Devil Rays 49th round draft pick… the guy won the CWS Home Run Derby jacking double digit big flys.

First off, wrong team. There’s no such thing as “Devil Rays.”

Second off, wrong blog. That’s JoeRaysFan.com.

Third, Joe puts zee-ROE stock in home run derbies. So a guy can hit long balls in batting practice. Pppfftt.

Fourth, a 49th round pick is an absolute prayer of a reach.

  36. RahDomDaBest Says:

Joe…. dude is bigger than the batter’s box… take a look.

  37. BigMacAttack Says:

Jammal Brown is a player I hoped the Bucs would have targeted sooner. He is a strong LT, better than Penn IMO. After his injury last season the Saints won the Superbowl with his replacement which made him expendable. I don’t know exactly what Bruce Allen traded to the Saints for him (3’rd or 4’th) but I think it was a great move. He has been beating up Buc Defenders for a few years which Allen was all too aware of. I used to TIVO all the Buc games before the Rahdom experiment and watch the lines play in slow motion after the games. Jammal Brown is dirty, mean and bull strong. The refs rarely called him for anything against us either. That is the guy that I would have targeted, but don’t know how well he has recovered yet from injury. With the Bucs signing Vincent, at least we know they are willing to deviate to fill a pressing need with the best available player.

  38. RahDomDaBest Says:

He will be a star…. you heard it here first.

BTW, I am on the Rays Message Board now… I AM Big Paul!

    LOL

If the Rays don’t sign him, then he’ll go back to school and get drafted higher next year. Technically, he is unsiganable as a 49th pick… that’s why no one drafted him higher… he was appearently commanding 6th-10th round money or he would go back to school.

  39. Joe Says:

    That’s a big boy.

  40. JimBuc Says:

BamBam — that is precisely the point and, as one can see from BigMacAttack’s comments, the older free agents are restricted which would take a trade in picks, something the Bucs would not do.

So, doesn’t that make the “hypocrisy” point a little empty and meaningless? Unless the Bucs were supposed to avoid Vincent just so as to not be called hypocrites.

  41. bucfanjeff Says:

Wow – 40 comments since yesterday, so I’m commenting a little late.
Here is the new plan: Move Zuttah to LT and Vincent to LG.
I would rather have Penn, but they are setting up for life without him.

  42. Capt.Tim Says:

Patrick- agreed with you post.we need ta sign Penn. He needs to be starting at LT. Vincent will start at LG, he’s an instant upgrade, and a good player! Buuut, don’t be surprised to see Dotson play alot this year. Everyone forgets he played RT in some games last year, and he looked good! Everyone writes him off like he’s never been on a football field, but that’s not true. He played last year, and played well. Word outta the Bucs camp is that he’s improved dramatically during the off season. We need Penn, but all this extra work that Dotson is getting is really showing what he can be. There’s a Lil rumor going around. If Penn signs during camp, he’s gonna spend some time at right tackle. By mid season, our lineup may be Dotson at LT, and Penn at right tackle. Another factor to signing Penn long term- Right tackles don’t make as much money!

  43. buckeyebob Says:

Looks like a good move…..inexpensive, low risk and experienced. Our new director of pro personnel did his job…not sure our last guy would have been able to get this done….

  44. Radio Mushmouth Says:

I already knew the Bucs signed him because he came cheap.

The same way I knew when I breathed in today it was because I needed oxygen.

Tell NationalFootballPost.com to tell us something a little more obvious.

  45. BigMacAttack Says:

Radio Mushmouth, the results are in, and you are the father!
