“Could Be Days Or Weeks Before McCoy” Arrives

July 30th, 2010

The call-it-as-he-sees-it Bucs beat writer for the Sarasota Herald-Tribune, Tom Balog, notes that the flurry of first-round pick signings today doesn’t mean Gerald McCoy will be wearing his big boy pads this weekend at Bucs training camp.

McCoy, the third overall pick, is not signed. His money people are apparently squabbling over contract length, per Balog.

Berry, the No.5 overall pick taken two spots below McCoy, signed with the Chiefs for $34 million guaranteed, as part of a five-year deal that makes him the highest paid safety in league history.

Knowing how the Glazers do business, and how McCoy’s agents expect to push the envelope beyond the guaranteed amount that Berry will be get, it could be days or weeks, before McCoy is in the fold. McCoy’s agents and Buccaneers general manager Mark Dominik are fighting over how many years the contract should be, with Dominik wanting to lock up McCoy for six years, while the agents try to limit the deal to five years.

Balog goes to talk tough when it comes to Team Glazer willingness to spend money on Donald Penn. It’s an interesting read.

Joe sincerely hopes McCoy is ready to go by Monday at the latest.

the longer the contract the less “up front” $ the Bucs will have to lay on the line.

Hey joe sounds like a poll question:

    How long before McCoy signs:

    Saturday
    Sunday
    Monday
    Tuesday
    Wednesday
    1 week
    2 weeks
    never

    The Chiefs are IDIOTS!!!!!

  3. CreamsiclePasties Says:

Weeks?!?!?!?!?! WEEKS?!?!?!?!?!?!?! This is total BS

SIGN THIS MAN…….for the past two yrs all we’ve been hearing about the Glazers is that they want to build through the draft and that they don’t want to spend money on FA’s because they’re going young and blah blah blah.

    This seriously sucks

  4. Pete Dutcher Says:

    @CreamsiclePasties
Don’t panic. This is just the media trying to build drama, nothing more. A deal will be announced (very) soon.

  5. Pete Dutcher Says:

I would add, as well…does anyone know when the last time was we didn’t have all of our rookies signed by the start of training camp?

    Have a little faith 😉

  6. tampa2 Says:

    7-10 Days

  7. Mr. Lucky Says:

@Pete – last year? Who held out last season? Freeman reported to camp even though he was riding the bench.

  8. JimBuc Says:

Balog is like a little bundle of bunny rabbits. Pure happiness and joy.

I think — could be wrong — #4 just signed so that should help move things along woth McCoy.

  9. DRB Says:

I agree, They’ll get a deal done sooner than later. Everbody just needs to relax already and stop freaking complaining all of the damn time.

I used to think it was just the Bucs, but then I heard it with the Rays also…. Every time something is not to the fan’s liking, it’s ” FIRE THE COACH FIRE THE MANAGER FIRE THE COACH FIRE THE MANAGER FIRE THE COACH FIRE THE MANAGER FIRE THE COACH”

I’ve lived here since 1987 and this “fanbase” has gotten less and less loyal to our teams as time has gone on. From 1987 until now, we have a Superbowl trophy, an NFC Title, Division championships, playoff appearances, a Stanley Cup, A world series appearance, ect, ect, and yet everyone does nothing but complain.

I’ve got news for all of the haters…. Raheem Morris and Mark Dominick spend MOST OF THEIR TIME RUNNING THE FOOTBALL TEAM. What the hell do all of you do all day???…. sell insurance? work construction? run a restaurant? work in an office?……. EXACTLY. They know what is best for the team because THATS WHAT THEY DO FOR A LIVING. You don’t.

So in the end, your negative opinions and bashing don’t mean anything to anyone important. Raheem and Mark wouldn’t even entertain a conversation with you about football or the team because YOU ARE NOT QUALIFIED TO EVALUATE THE JOB PERFORMANCE OF AN NFL HEAD COACH OR A GENERAL MANAGER.

Bash all you want, but we’ve seen what a young team that steadily improves can do around here. Tony Dungy was a leader of men- plain and simple….. guess what, like him or not, Raheem Morris is a leader of men too. THE PLAYERS’ OPINIONS ARE THE ONLY ONES THAT COUNT. The people who know Raheem Morris know that he is a leader, period.

How’s this, everyone around here trusts and respects Tony Dungy’s opinion right? ASK HIM WHAT HE THINKS OF RAHEEM MORRIS AND MARK DOMINICK.

Try acting like real fans, show a little patience and enjoy watching this young team become a playoff team in years to come.

Give these guys a chance to mold this team into a winner, and try focusing on what YOU do for a living instead of thinking that you could step in and do a better job.

  10. Mr. Lucky Says:

DRB – Please tell us how you REALLY feel…. 😉

REALLY???? Since when don’t the owners opinions count?

So if all the players are happy fans should just fork over THOUSANDS of $$$ for season tickets and not moan about a LOUSY 3-13 team?

Raheem Morris is a leader? Says who…you?

Ever see what happens to lemmings who follow their leader?

I would have loved to see you living in France in the year 1812

DRB “What’s wrong with you people, Napoleon is a leader. Instead of complaining you should be supporting his decision to invade Russia. You call yourselves real Frenchmen.’

Hopefully the 2010 season will not turn out like the Battle of Leipzig.

    More goods news.

  13. CreamsiclePasties Says:

    @ Pete

Yea…..the Bucs have been notorious for midnight deals the last few yrs. As far as I’m concerned there is no reason why we can’t get him in on time……..

  14. Gatorbuc15 Says:

God I hope this doesn’t take weeks to sign him.

  15. Spirit of '76 Says:

    You can all quit worrying.

Bucs signed LT Donald Penn to a multi-year contract.
Financials and length haven’t been disclosed. The Bucs really caved here, but it’s not like they had an alternative with only converted basketball player Demar Dotson behind Penn on the depth chart. Though Penn didn’t grade out as one of the NFL’s better tackles last year, the athletic 27-year-old allowed just five sacks and has big upside. He’ll need to cut down on the penalties after committing 11 last season to rank eighth in the league.

  16. eric Says:

That is good news on Penn. One less worry.

I guess he did have some leverage after all.

  17. the_buc_realist Says:

    @ Eric

Penn did have leverage, the Head coach was speaking gibberish to the media. The Gm Panics and folds like a lawn chair. Unfortunately this is the same ” Plan ” as last year’s

  18. JimBuc Says:

Eric, did Penn have leverage of did the Bucs just do the right thing? I guess in your world the answer could only be “leverage.”

Can’t wait to see the terms

  19. JimBuc Says:

Buc realist — how ridiculous to turn a positive into a negative

  20. Radio Mushmouth Says:

JimBuc, you and the kool-aid drinkers just got done praising an article that said the Bucs would be right not to give Penn a deal because THE STATS SAY HE IS ONLY BARELY AVERAGE, AND TOO FAT TO BOOT.

I told you “stats are for losers” , to which you said I was an idiot .

Now all of a sudden the “Bucs did the right thing” .

LOL, make up your mind , kid.

Regardless of your moronic flip-floping , this was a good move by the Bucs . Now if they can just get thier heads out of thier asses and get McCoy in camp , we should be in decent shape. These excuses about having to wait until Bradford signs are bullsh*t. The 4th and 5th picks have already signed , so can the 3rd.

  21. Dylan Says:

Sam bradford just signed, i would not be suprised if mccoy does not sign tonight or tommorow..

  22. Dylan Says:

And radio, gerald mccoy and his agent said the “lets wait till bradford signs” not the buccaneers lol.

  23. BigMacAttack Says:

Balog??? just shows the kind of idiots we have living here in Sarasota.

This deal will be done by Saturday morning. I heard Dom wants a 6 year deal and Dogra wants a 5 year, but the rest is pretty much agreed upon.

LOL, I may have just showed what kind of idiots live here in Sarasota.
