Suh Runs The 40 In 4.98

March 1st, 2010

Joe doesn’t have much interest in the combine 40-yard dash times for defensive tackles. But Joe knows Bucs fans are riveted to the movements of manbeast Ndamukong Suh and Gerald McCoy.

So, without further adieu, Suh just ran his first 40 at the NFL scouting combine and clocked a 4.98. His second run is coming up. That matched the time of Penn State’s Jared Odrick, another top prospect at the position. McCoy checked in with 4.96. …Warren Sapp ran a 4.63 back in the day.

NFL Network analysts are praising Suh for even showing up for the combine, saying that all he needed to do was let his college film do the talking rather than risk getting hurt.

Update 12:05 p.m.: Suh clocked a 5.07 in his second attempt.

McCoy ran an unofficial 4.96 earlier in the day. Just FYI

I would be happy with either D-Tackle I know we need more picks so we can fill more holes that we have!

  3. JDouble Says:

I wish they let us know the 10 yard times, as that is what really matters for a DT or DE. Both guys had an impressive burst though.

I thought it was very interesting that Suh had 32 bench reps, while McCoy could only do 26. Anyhting under 30 is considered weak for a defensive lineman. 26 is pretty surprising for a #1 prospect.

    @JDouble

Thats just patently false. Anything under 20 is considered weak for a D Lineman. Anything over 25 is acceptable. Anything over 30 is exceptional Out of all the D Lineman at the combine I believe only 13 got more than 30.

FWIW Jason Paul Pierre only got 19 reps at 225 and that’s sure to throw up red flags.

Now back to your regularly scheduled programming.

    Steve,

What is your impression of those combine drills? Are they helpful indicators of what kind of player any of these guys might become?

Do guys commony suck at it, but become really good players and vice versa?

  6. BucWonder Says:

Sapp was such a freak. 6 feet tall, 300+ lbs and he could dunk a basketball. There not ever be another one quite like 99.

  7. Erick Says:

McCoy was being interviewed by NFL Network guys, and they asked him who his favorite team growing up was. Along with Dallas he said Tampa Bay because he was a big fan of Sapp and the rest of the defense. Hopefully the Bucs can get this guy and he can bring back that dominant defense. He sounds like a really good kid with a good head on his shoulders.

Justin Pawlowksi’s heart is all aflutter now.

Joe just an FYI : you just got serious live on the sports babe and antwain from the tribune.

JDouble, I know your opinion is that Suh is light years ahead of McCoy, but McCoy has pretty good tape too. I think both are better than the other depending on what scheme they’re in and what is asked of them. They are both elite talents IMO. I think McCoy is better suited for what Raheem wants to do defensively.

  11. Finerdetailz Says:

That was supposed to be LOVE

  12. Joe Says:

    Finerdetailz:

Joe didn’t get to hear it but heard about Anwar dropping Joe’s name.

What did Anwar have to say? He’s always been good to Joe, as has the Sports Babe. Good people.

  13. JoeBucsSteveCampbell Says:

I’d like to see their 10 yard split times. 40’s are virtually useless for DL’s. Unless you’re playing Madden, I’ve never seen QB’s drop back 40 yards to pass.

  14. Joe Says:

    Steve:

Joe heard Michael Irvin make a good point yesterday about how useless 40 times are. Irvin said he watched the receivers run their 40 times and they all ran like sprinters, which is natural because they are coached that way for the combine by track guys.

Irvin said if any receiver tried to run a pattern with their head down and not looking, they’ll get decapitated by a linebacker or safety.

  15. JDouble Says:

I wish they had them run thier drills in pads. Even making them wear a cup would be more realistic. Seems it would make more sense and give teams a better idea of a guy’s true football speed.

  16. Mike J Says:

Joe, I agree with Michael. Anybody besides me recall how slow a 40 Jerry Rice ran at the Combine??

  17. Finerdetailz Says:

They said how awesome the site is and that you don’t get enough credit for the fine job you do in covering the Bucs .

  18. Radio Mushmouth Says:

So McCoy is much weaker than Suh (expected) , but he isn’t any faster either ( they timed about the same).

    any questions??

  19. adam Says:

and pierre paul wimped out with like 19 bench presses ….even dexter mccluster did more than him……………picking pierre paul as some say at 3rd is an insane move ….only al davis would do such a thing….i will laugh if the raiders grab him in round 1……….watch its gonna happen…lol

Game tape doesn’t lie. When push comes to shove that’s all that is really needed to evaluate players. I’d say maybe the most important thing the combine does for teams is get all the players in one place so teams can more easily interview the players. 40 times are nice and all but I think the positional drills are more helpful for evaluating.
