Sammie Stroughter Ready To Be No. 1 Receiver

Joe trusts Raheem the Dream will have ample opportunties to chest bump Sammie Stroughter this fall.

As Joe documented Saturday, both on radio with his good friend Justin Pawlowski of WDAE-AM 620 and on this very site, the current slate of Bucs receivers is dismal.

Unless something is done to bolster the receivers — something Joe can’t believe Bucs general manager Mark Dominik won’t do in the coming months — there will be a whole lot of hope and, perhaps, little change from last year’s miserable results.

One glimmer of light could be that second year receiver Sammie Stroughter, tops among current Bucs receivers with 31 receptions in 2009, which tied for No. 130 in the NFL, had flashes of brilliance last year.

As a result, so reports The Mad Twitterer of the St. Petersburg Times, Stroughter is looking forward to being the Bucs No. 1 receiver this fall and making a big impact.

Much has been made about the Bucs’ perceived lack of talent at receiver. But Stroughter, whose 31 catches for 331 yards were more than Maurice Stovall (24) and Michael Clayton (16), believes he can build on the chemistry he began to establish with Freeman.

“Grading myself with an evil eye, it was a good year, a productive year, especially being a seventh-rounder,” said Stroughter, 24. “But for my standards … my expectations are really, really high.”

If the Bucs don’t add any receivers between now and July, and Stroughter is unable to take advantage, Joe is fearful of another frightening season.

pretty sad when you go 3-13 have the worst record in 20 years and have lost 17-out of your last 20 games and somehow we are even worse going into this year better hope we nail this draft

  2. Eric Says:

If the bucs don’t address the wideout situation the opposing DC will simply:

    1. Double Winslow

    2. stack the box and shut down the running game

    3. blitz Freeman.

Above stated scenario will be often repeated.

Stroughter isn’t a #1, but he could be a #2 one day…and he certainly could be a solid slot guy.

Everyone keeps stressing the fact that this guy was a 7th round pick.

He’s not your average 7th round pick. Had it not been for his personal issues with depression in college he would have easily been a 2nd or 3rd round pick. He was a huge steal in the 7th round.

This guy could be the best thing to happen to us and we don’t even know it, only time will tell. I believe that without AB the playbook will focus more on Stroughter allowing him to show us why he is good…hopefully

Stop drinking the KoolAid. Sammy is not a number 1 and Domink knows this.

Sammie is a great wr, I see him easily being a 80 overral wr. He may not be a big name wr but without a doubt he going to work extremly hard to become one

  8. d-money Says:

Wouldn’t you want all of the recievers to approach the season as if they were going to earn the number one spot?

  9. YearOBucsfan Says:

I expect great things from Stroughter. Hopefully, he can stay healthy. In order for him to do well, we will still need another WR. Winslow, Stroughter, and ___________________, could be a good enough group. If they don’t bring in someone else, it won’t be good enough. I know Winslow is a TE, but that isn’t how he is used.

  10. Big Daddy Says:

Sammy looked pretty good and was a steal in the 7th but the Bucs have to bring in more talent at receiver

  11. Leighman114 Says:

80 overall WR… is that a Madden rating? I don’t think we have any WR’s who would CURRENTLY rank above 70 if that game came out tomorrow, tho Sammie does have great potential.

If we don’t pull off any trades for anyone else at WR, we HAVE to draft someone in 2nd round and then use a 6th or 7th rounder on someone with a similar situation to Straughter (talent who falls). No Juco projects this year plzzz!!!

  12. TJ Tillman Says:

I like staughter but can he stay healthy ????????????
