Marc Bulger To The Bucs? God Help Us All

February 24th, 2010

If ever Joe needed a six-pack of Caybrew and the comfort of Rachel Watson, it is now.

Moments ago, Joe was shaken to his core when a text alerted him to a truly disturbing post by his good friend and NFL Draft guru Justin Pawlowski on the NFL draft page at 620WDAE.com, where Pawlowski makes the case that signing Rams quarterback Marc Bulger would be an asset for Raheem the Dream.

It seems word is leaking out of St. Louis this Bulger may be released. Joe just can’t imagine why?

The Bucs need and want a veteran back up to continue to help teach Josh Freeman how to be a successful NFL quarterback. I thought and still do that Chad Pennington would be a good fit for that role, but Bulger’s history with Greg Olsen may make him the Bucs top choice. Bulger has had zero success since signing his big deal with the Rams a few years back.

Look, Joe thinks the world of Pawlowski, but this Bulger is nothing more than a junior-grade Jeff George who can’t stay healthy. To quote the great Norman Chad, “Only in fantasy football would you actually want Jeff George.”

i actually think bulger would be a good pickup he has been around a while and could mentor freeman better then any other qb that is a free agent and he and olson have worked together before if not bulger then pennington and if not those 2 just keep josh johnson but i like the bulger idea

  2. Matt Says:

Bulger is nothing like George, from a teammate perspective.

The goal is to sign a veteran QB with knowledge of our system that can train Freeman, not some guy we want to ACTUALLY PLAY. We already know we’re screwed if that happens.

    What better player than Bulger?

  3. Eric S Says:

This is for the backup position Joe. I wouldn’t mind Bulger at all. He would be one of the best backups in the league. The guy has a career QB rating of 84 which is well above average. He has starting experience and is relatively young at 32. And he does have a bigger arm than Chad P. by a mile. Chad P or Bulger would be nice additions as backups. If Olsen is comfortable with Bulger, that is a plus.

  4. Eric Says:

    Id like the 97 George, 29 td’s 9 int, 3700 yds……………….

  5. bucfanjeff Says:

So oft-hurt Bulger, whom was on the worst team in the NFL, we want to come in? Uhm, I’ll take Pennington whom can challenge and mentor Freeman on the mental side of the game. Unless Freeman is hurt, let’s face it, the #2 won’t sniff game action other than pre-season.

  6. Radio Mushmouth Says:

I’d rather Josh Johnson come in after a Freeman injury than Bulger.

I don’t see the point unless your trade Johnson.

  7. Eric S Says:

If this was for the starting position, I would decline Bulger as well. But this for the backup position for crying out loud. Bulger has played behind a horrible OL and no weapons beside Stephen Jackson for a few years now. When he had a younger Tory Holt and a younger Orlando Pace protecting him, Bulger was not a bad QB. Sure he’s not Kurt Warner and he was given a ridiculous contract. Just like I said, Pennington wouldn’t be bad either. He also gets hurt a lot as well, so he carries that risk. And who knows how his shoulder be? Many people thought Chad’s career was over when he got hurt and the severity of the injury. I think Bulger might be less of a risk injury wise. But still this is for the backup position. We only have to worry about these guys if Freeman gets hurt. Hopefully he doesn’t.

  8. FlBoy84 Says:

Agree Freeman could use a veteran mentor as he progresses, though you could say he already has it in Van Pelt, his QB coach. Curious to see who’s going to be available once free agency begins. Would think Bulger will probably look for a situation where he has a bit better chance to compete for a starting job.

  9. Eric Says:

    Bulger Smulger,

With RM were still one legged men going into ass kicking contests.

  10. Chris Says:

Just say no to Bulger. What is needed in a backup quarterback is a guy to come in if needed and manage a win. Nothing flashy, no quarterback controversy, smart player. I know he was a starter but Steve Deburg was an ideal backup type. Could win one or two but not going to compete in the long haul. Pennington makes more sense. Since his injury, he has had to play smarter which means he had to learn more of the game. Knowledge is what is needed to pass on to Freeman.

  11. Joe Says:

Hey Legal, don’t like the ads? Don’t look at them. How much Bucs content are other sites pumping out daily this time of the year?

Or would you prefer to pay to read each post?

Sorry to ruin your day, but Joe is not a charity.

However, Joe does appreciate you dropping by and your contribution. Thank you.

  12. OAR Says:

Joe, Pay no attention to a “legal lecher” moniker, unless he’s one of those lecher’s that’s hanging outside said “little league baseball fields.” I think I just threw up.

  13. Eric Says:

I don’t mind the ads, and I sorta question someone criticizing ads in a blog which also contains outstanding shots of Ms. Watson and others…………….

Unless of course one’s orientation would not cause any focus on said pics………………………

  14. OAR Says:

Eric, “Unless of course one’s orientation would not cause any focus on said pics………………………” Exactly, especially with the moniker “legal lecher”. Damn! I threw up, again!

  15. Pruritis Ani Says:

I too think it would be a terrible move to bring Bulger in here. The Pennington idea I do like as I think he would be a better mentor for Freeman.

The ads don’t bother me. I have actually patronized a few of them..Maybe Joe can talk to Joe Redner and perhaps get a few additional ads. 😀

  16. Eric Says:

    maybe that Lingerie Football League?

  17. Mike J Says:

Bulger would be OK for a third stringer. so would Pennington, but he is a diff type QB.
I have noticed that Dan Fouts & Johnny Unitas are rarely available on the back-up market.

  18. Radio Mushmouth Says:

I’d much rather look at advertisements than have to pay a monthly fee for so-called “insider” info ( that is really just author speculation) .

See Pewter Report for further clarification.

  19. Radio Mushmouth Says:

It’s the QB coaches job to teach , not the back-up. The back-ups job is to manage the game in a pinch…

not to mention there is no garantee a veteran back-ups #1 priority will not be helping a youngster , but taking over the starting spot himself.

  20. OAR Says:

Joey Harrington is an upgrade over Sluggo Leftwich, heck my grandmother would be.

  21. Mike J Says:

BTW–Bulger isn’t officially gonzo yet.Rams are still “evaluating.”

  22. Eric Says:

The Dream will figure out how to play a QB during the regular season who barely participated, if at all, in training camp or the pre-season.

Its an unusual strategy, but it really freaks the opposing team out…………..

  23. Bob Fox Says:

I think Bulger would be a great mentor for Freeman. Knows the coordinator and knows the system. Has tons of experience as well. It’s a no brainer, especially when you compare Bulger to Leftwich.

  24. Eric Says:

Isnt Van Pelt the “mentor”, cause he did so well developing Buffablows passing game?

  25. Gatorgod Says:

Bob Fox — This is a very different system than the one Bulger played in for Olson in St. Louis. No comparison

    Signed,
    Former Rams fan

  26. Jimmie Says:

As a Bucs Fan, I would definitely like the move should The Bucs get him. Bulger is familiar with Greg Olson and he would provide excellent Leadership for Josh Freeman along with the Quarterbacks Coach in Alex Van Pelt. Besides, having familiarity with this Offensive System under Olson is a plus, but of course we’ll have to see what happens since Bulger is still under contract with St. Louis.

  27. jlynch1340 Says:

How does Bulger ” Knows the system”????Its Grudens playbook from his last season.Olsen hasn’t had an original play yet.It tyook 13 weeks to get a friggin screen pass or a QB sneak. He is a joke for an O.C. Oh yeah 3 running backs and 40 pass attempts a game, way to go Raheem jr.

  28. Bob Fox Says:

Gatorgod- I appreciate what you are saying, but the language and the coaching are the same. Obviously Olson and Bulger have a history of communicating together. It’s not rocket science…it’s a comfort level. Bottom line, if it’s a choice between Bulger and Leftwich…bring on Bulger.

  29. mpmalloy Says:

Bulger must be willing to sign cheap if there’s any validity to this.

He could mentor Freeman………in the fine art of underachievement…
…..which he has perfected to a science.

  30. FlBoy84 Says:

    @jlynch1340
Can’t say yet if Olson’s a joke as an O.C., but do agree that you’d think he’d get to the QB sneak & screen pass (especially with his young QB’s getting blitzed almost every play) sooner than the last game or two of the season. Curious to see what he can do with an entire off-season & training camp to implement his own system. Hard to judge him fairly without that.

  31. Eric Says:

If the best we can say about the dude is, “he is better than Leftwich”, it shows just how far we have fallen, and the Glazers have lowered the bar where mediocrity looks good.

I just hope the sham will be over following this fiasco of a season we will be enduring this fall.

  32. Gatorgod Says:

Bobfox – for all we know they don’t even like each other, Bulger and Olson. …Jagodzinski and Bates seemed like a good ideas, too. Raheem knew Bates for years and Jagodzinski was around One Buc for six months before the kicked him out for being a fraud.

  33. Tommy Boy Says:

Joe, LMFAO! Make your money! You handled Legal Lecher perfectly. Your last sentence was classic. I wouldn’t care if every part of this website was covered with ads just as long as you keep providing Bucs coverage for free on the daily! I wonder if Lecher even knows he “contributed” more than just posting on this blog?

  34. Bob Fox Says:

I’ll say this…getting rid of both coordinators in the same year (one in preseason), does not speak well about the first year head coach or the first year General Manager. But it ALL starts at the top no doubt.

  35. Joe Says:

    Tommy Boy:

There was some dude a couple of weeks ago who was upset with Joe’s relationship with Clear Channel and other advertisers. Joe basically told him Joe would be happy to get rid of all the ads he doesn’t like so long as he cut Joe a check.

    Thanks for the compliments.

  36. hawaiianbuc Says:

Don’t get me wrong, I think Pennington is a good QB, and would probably be one of the best backup QB’s in the league. However, he is the complete opposite type of QB as Freeman, so I don’t necessarily think he would be the perfect fit in Tampa. Freeman has a big arm, which they are supposedly going to actually utilize next year. Pennington, not so much. If he did have to play next year (let’s all hope that never happens), the offense would change drastically, which is usually not a good thing. On the other hand, at least Bulger has a bigger arm, not to mention experience with our OC. That team he played on was worse than ours, and I doubt anyone would have played great on that team. I would welcome either one, but I disagree that Pennington is a much better choice for the Bucs.

  37. Mike J Says:

Kinda what I was getting at, hawaiianbuc.
