Here Comes Byron

August 29th, 2009

It seems Raheem The Dream has his man. Byron Leftwich has been named the Bucs starting quarterback. Joe was alerted via NFL Network this morning.

It’s not Joe’s preferred choice, but Joe is pleased the head coach seems to have made his choice. That flies in the face of the St. Pete Times-driven rumors that the Glazer family was pulling the strings on the QB decision.

The Glazers have little if any history of telling their coaches what to do. And it seems they are sticking to that M.O.

Much more information will come out later today after Morris addresses the media.

Joe is now most interested in how the Bucs will approach the backup quarterback position.

Former Bucs quarterback Jeff Carlson, a JoeBucsFan.com analyst, has written many times about how Leftwich leaves himself wide open for injury with his big windup, lack of mobility and history of taking sacks.

Who will back him up? Will Luke stay with the team? Can Josh Freeman develop effectively as the No. 3 quarterback? What about Josh Johnson?

With Leftwich now starting — and getting paid — the Bucs are investing quite large sum in the QB position, considering they are way under the cap.

Joe would be somewhat surprised if McCown is there on opening day.

I think they need to keep Luke for backup. Look at how often Buc QBs have gone down in recent years.

  2. Spent Says:

Nah, just let it play out. If we can get something for luke, heck even a 6th round, you do it. If Lefty goes down with injury, that’s the perfect opportunity for Freeman to come in, or to see what JJ has

  3. Mr. Lucky Says:

Goodbye Luke – you’re headed for Jacksonville buddy!

Hey is it just me or in that picture of Byron doesn’t he look like Gary Coleman – just kinda bigger?

    What you talkin bout Willis?

  4. MTM Says:

Is just me or does Leftwich look like Kenan Thompson from SNL. He sucks on SNL as well.

  5. Tye Says:

7 years in the league and still fooling people. I wonder what is his secret!

  6. Pete Says:

Look at politicians Tye, years of elections, followed by years of lies, followed by years of re-elections.

  7. Chuck Says:

Someone should have told Jeff Carleson the secret. Why would anyone consider him the local expert? I think he played in one game for NE and maybe three for Tampa. Lefty may not be the best in the NFL, but he is still in the NFL. The Bucs will suprise a great many people this season. Also, Joe, thanks for breaking up the Morris quotes. When listening to him I get it, but when reading the quotes it is a bit scattered. The breaks helped.
